The noodles were chewy and as expected of beef noodle soup. The soup wasn't super spicy and could have had a little more flavor, but it was still a good meal! We had a very nice meal here, but the overall dining experience could have been a little better. I don't know if this place takes reservations, but we just showed up here on an early Friday evening after a long drive in from O'Hare. My daughter has been here several times before and highly recommended it. The place was busy but we were seated right away at an outdoor table behind the restaurant. While this might evoke images of pleasant terrace dining, the space was considerably less appealing. The tables were those metal mesh tables that allow spilled food and liquids to land in your lap. The chairs were wobbly, and the deck itself was worn out and uneven. There were buckets of tools and ladders leaned up again the wall. But, at least we were able to get dinner started right away! The food itself was very good. We started off with pork, shrimp, and scallop xiao long bao which were tasty but they stuck a little to the parchment paper, so we had to take care to lift them out so we didn't lose the soup. Steaming on cabbage leaves would have been better. The Peking duck fried rice had excellent flavor but there wasn't that much duck in it. The garlic bok choy also prepared well. One of the favorites was the Yibin flaming noodles, which were spicy but not overwhelming so. I found it to bit a little salty, however. The chicken and rice cake dish was expertly prepared. Sometimes the rice cake can be overcooked and have a gummy texture, but that wasn't the case here. We finished the meal with glutinous rice cake, which was a good palate cleanser. Service was attentive and the food came out relatively quickly. The total cost of the meal was very reasonable: the total cost for the six dishes and no drinks was a little over $100, including the tip. So we were certainly very happy with the meal, we just wish that the setting was a little more pleasant. read more

This was an hour past the pickup time I selected, and I received a text saying it would be ready even earlier than that. I got the fu qi fei pian, the century egg salad, and the sichuan zajiang noodles. The noodles were a texture that I was not used to. They were harder than al dente which I didn't mind but would prefer them to be chewier. It was covered in the zajiang sauce and the photo does not do it justice because there was more sauce under the noodles. The sauce was amazing and flavorful so much so that I asked for a to go container just for the leftover sauce LOL. The fu qi fei pian was good just as I expected it. The century egg is what made me take off the last star. The egg just tasted old kind of like when you freeze something and defrost it a couple times. The sauce was not the best either. The pick this week was Chengdu Bistro in Bucktown. We wanted to start with chicken and cabbage dumplings, but they came last. Nice order of 8, but they were just bland. Really needed some kind of spice. Donna ordered sweet spicy noodles, I got Sichuan Zajiang noodles with stewed peas. While tasty, hers was not very spicy, not even for me. My dish was milder, but didn't look anything like the picture on the menu. Not much of the pork or the peas. The noodles were made in house and pretty good. I'm so glad that printers row is getting more local restaurants in the area!! I've eaten here a couple times now (both dine-in and takeout) and do think it will become a staple in my restaurant rotation. They have a variety of different dumplings which are excellent (and you get them anyway you like: steamed, boiled, fried etc). I also really enjoyed the dry chilli chicken. I'm also a huge spice lover, however I will say some dishes have too much sichuan pepper (ie the spicy beef noodle soup) to the point I couldn't really eat it after a certain point due to the tingly/numbing sensation. read more

Visited this gem in wicker park with a dear friend for the first time today and my tastebuds and tummy are still dancing! We both ordered all the veggie options on the menu and each of them were absolutely delicious!!! Everything came out of the kitchen so quickly! Fresh, hot and flavorful! The mushroom bao had a unique flavor, dense and satisfying. The veggie dumplings (we got them pan fried) were delightful mouthfuls of yummy veggies served with a flavorful soy sauce. My favorite dish and the show stopper for me were the sweet spicy noodles!!! The sauce on these noodles was such a treat you'll want to put it on everything! I can't remember the name of the noodles my friend had but they were delicious too! The interior of this place is also very charming and welcoming. A nice place for a lunch catch up with friends, or dinner spot, and it's the kind of place that doesn't seem like it would get so loud you have to yell across the table to hear each other. Tried Chengdu Bistro during a private event so I can't directly comment on typical service, but the staff were kind and we had a lovely time. There was a set menu for the lunch event and we got to try menu more dishes than if I can't with just my partner. Sometimes not having to make any decisions is such a welcomed break. The dumplings that we had were delicious. Not too spicy but had nice flavor. I enjoyed making the garlic cucumber salad for a bright bite in-between more "yeet hai" spicy/savory bites. A friend and I came here to meet for dinner. Initially I chose this place because I read the reviews about their BYOB policy plus the fact that the food looked very tempting. We brought a bottle of wine and asked about the BYOB situation. The waiter (who was very nice) told us they had recently ended BYOB as an option, but because we didn't know and had our wine ready to go, he let it slide and was very nice about it. 5 stars just for that alone, but omg the FOOD! Whatever you do, DO NOT get the Peking duck. To the owner of this establishment: I would implore you to take this off the menu immediately. It does not fit the rest of your offerings; you do not make it anywhere near to an edible quality and it shouldn't be on the menu. The duck tasted like it had been sitting out for days. We came on a Sunday night for dinner and they were busy! Luckily we didn't have to wait long for a table (without a reservation) but this place was continuously packed with both delivery and take out orders, as well as dine in guests. The servers who work here are excellent- they are a bit short staffed during peak hours but everyone managed to make it work and do it with a pleasant attitude. All the dishes we ordered tasted authentic and delicious. We got 2 orders of their Zajiang noodles with stewed chickpeas. You can customize which kind of noodles you want so we got regular for one bowl and the thicker noodles for the second bowl. We also got their steamed pork baos, steamed pork and chive dumplings and ye er ba. For dessert, we wanted to try their tang yuan but it was a 30 minute wait during peak dinner hours, so we ended up going with the glutinous rice cakes, which ended up being a hit. The dining area is quite small, the tables are also small, but they can still accommodate a few larger groups. Meh. Sorry to say. My date took me to this place as it was close to his home, so I didn't expect much to begin with. Nice signage though. You would definitely get better tasting soup dumplings by going to 88 Market, or possibly H Mart and get the frozen soup dumplings there and steam it yourself. Originally I thought we were going to Chengdu Impression but my friend said the soup broth here is slightly better so we came to Chengdu Bistro instead but I believe both restaurants are owned by the same person. We got the spicy beef tripe/tendon/shank appetizer and WOW IT WAS GOOD! Thick slices of beef shank along with the spicy chili oil that doesn't numb your mouth but gives it a super good kick. I got the regular braised beef noodles soup because I wasn't feeling spicy that day and WOW IT REALLY HIT THE SPOT FOR ME! Just typing this review out is making me want to go back already. I honestly cannot wait to go back to Chengdu and try the spicy broth with the braised beef. They're not skimpy at all with the amount of the meat and you will feel full! It's a very nice sit down restaurant and I realized Cebu used to be in this spot because I recognized the counter/bar area almost immediately after I walked in. Service was really quick and good.
