No other papusa has yet to compare to Chepes. I tried my first pupusa here and fell in love with pupusas, I didn't know at the time...I really fell in love with chepe's. Tried others , so far none have compared. I love the cheese and mushroom pupusas, not what I was expecting would be my most very favorite lol but it is. Seriously all are delicious. Super surprised by the Tamal. I'm just going to tell you I don't really like tamales, sorry, just not my thing - no matter how many I try that people tell me are delicious LOL. This is different, it has gorgeous little hunks of delicious pork in it and it is steamy and juicy. Not dry and all Masa. It's almost like eating a meaty matzo ball LOL except was pork hahaha apologies for the comparison but explaining that this Tamal is only a distant cousin to a tamale. BEST TIP..... order what you're going to eat and then order like eight more pupusas to go. These things heat up glorious on low heat in a frying pan. Do not add any extra oil or butter, just put them in a pan on a medium to medium low heat. The Tamals heat up perfect in microwave , it's how I had my first one. read more

My husband and I just moved to the area (Vancouver,Wa) from the San Francisco Bay Area. I've made it a mission to find great Salvadoran food! There are plenty of pupuserias back in SF but they seem to be scarce in the Portland area. I was so excited to find this place! When we walked in, I felt nostalgic seeing all the Salvadoran influences in this restaurant. I grew up eating platanos and pupusas regularly so seeing the menu made me giddy! I was literally tearing up as our food arrived to our table. And the food did not disappoint my high expectations. It was DELICIOUS! So thank you, Chepe's! Let me start by saying we LOVE Chepe's. It's delicious and we love supporting local businesses. However, we have been given the wrong order at least 3-4 times. My partner cannot eat dairy, so he always orders the Pork and Bean pupusa. This is an existing item on the menu already, not something I request special for me. This pupusa, per the menu, is only supposed to have pork and beans. Unfortunately they seem to always add cheese. Initially I would order online and order the pork and bean, but I wouldn't specify "no cheese." I thought maybe I need to start specifying in the notes. When that didn't work, I figured maybe if I ordered by phone. Still kept getting the wrong orders. Not sure what else to do, as they keep adding cheese even when I specifically and clearly say no cheese. We still love them and want to keep ordering, however it's getting very frustrating. I got the pork & cheese pupusa alongside the tamale plate (the rice & beans that come with it are so yummy too) and, oh my goodness, that will feed you for days! Pupusas!!! They are not like any I've ever had. The food is truly amazing! Ordered the four different kinds of the traditional pupusas. They didn't have one of the ingredients so they had to modify it, not a big deal but would've been nice to try. The restaurant needs a lot of TLC! The seats are worn and benches hate falling apart. Chepes is just down the street a couple of blocks from the Rockwood Multnomah County Library. After my visit there, I walked down to this unassuming restaurant to get lunch. It looks smaller than it really is. Take your time turning in here because it's literally almost on the street and the turn has to be sharp. The parking lot is fairly good sized and can hold several cars. They do a lot of takeout business, so pay attentionas as there are a lot of cars coming in and out. The restaurant is very clean. I did not use the restroom. I was greeted at the front desk by the most pleasant young man who took my order (two pupusas with fried eggs and what I assumed to be enchilada sauce and garnished with avocado and I had a soda). Portion sizes were perfect Goldilocks size (not too big, not too small) and nicely presented on the plate. When he delivered my dish to my table, I asked where the condiment bar was located. He asked what I wanted and brought me my napkins, fork and knife, and green salsa (nicely tangy and spicy). I was truly impressed as he went the extra mile for me. Pupusas here were perfectly cooked and filled with melted cheese. Whoever fried the eggs truly knew what they were doing. Proper egg frying is a gift. The pupusas soaked up the egg yolk and enchilada sauce to make for something very delicious. I took the time to get started on one of the new books from the library and whiled some time away. Do come here for takeout or dining in. You'll get excellent food and wonderful service. read more

This place is a diamond in the rough. Not so great neighborhood and location, but the food makes it all worth it! We come here quite a bit, trying different things but I mostly always come back to the chicken pupusa and the shrimp pupusa! So unbelievably good. The salsa bar is great too! Lots of pickled cabbage slaw, cucumbers, lime, salsa, etc. and they have a full service bar in the back, outdoor seating AND BEACH VOLLEYBALL!? You must come here. Very disappointed. Nobody at the bar. Wanted to sit a the bar but the bar counter was filthy and there was salt everywhere. Sat at another table but the chair was so wobbly that I was like whatever I just dealt with it. Popusas were kinda gross. Masa was super soggy and all I could taste was just cheese. No texture at all. Also if you're charging over $10 a plate ($12 for one avocado popusa WTF) it better not come in a paper plate. I just moved into the neighborhood and after trying Chepes' papusas, I can confidently say that I will be going there regularly to try their dishes. They have an amazing assortment of Salvadoran dishes on their menu, ranging from sopas (de pata, de mariscos, etc.), combination dishes, and an amazing selection of fillings for their papusas. Their papusas are hearty and really filling. The fillings are fresh and our order was piping hot. I can't forget to mention how great the slaw was! They were incredibly generous with our to-go slaw portion. As far as the inside of the restaurant: clean, family friendly, great salsa bar, friendly employees, very open space. Love it! read more

The place was empty when we got there in the early afternoon. I was looking forward to some good pupusas but unfortunately they were dry, maybe because they were cold by the time we brought them home. The salsas were all too spicy, and that's coming from someone who loves spicy hot food. My husband had the pollo en salsa but unfortunately it was dry and bland. I'm Salvadoran and this was particularly disappointing. On the upside, the best I had from there were the sides: the fried plantains were sweet with perfectly crispy edges. The fried beans were amazing-just the right creamy texture with a saltiness that paired well with the plantains. I would go back one day just for the breakfast, where beans, plantains, eggs are king. read more

Chepes comes through with the pupusas!! They have an extensive menu but I find myself and my husband coming back just for the pupusas. They use quality, flavorful fillings (I love the revueltas!). Their cabbage slaw comes in spicy and regular. The spicy definitely isn't bland, but neither is the regular.Their horchata is delicious and they are in a great location, usually pretty fast too. Love, love, love this place. The staff are wonderful, the food is amazing. We've been coming here since this was a food card on 102nd and Stark roughly a decade ago and the brick and mortar location is even better. It is no exaggeration to say that I eaten at least a few hundred of their papusas over the years and they have never, not once, been anything short of stellar. We take all of our out of town visitors here. Especially if they have never had El Salvadorian food. I can't wait until the pandemic restrictions have ended and their indoor dining is open to full capacity. In the meantime, we've had their pickup many times and it's still fantastic. read more

Chepe's never disappoints. I have tried almost all of their choices for pupusas but probably my favorites are the classic cheese and cheese and bean. The last time that I visited I also tried the plantains and was no disappointed at all!! The staff are always super friendly and helpful. The only downside is that travel time to chepes if you don't live on that side of town. Definitely worth it though! If you're looking for other dishes besides pupusas I would probably hit up a Mexican restaurant. This isn't the spot for you! read more
