Absolutely lovely. I ordered my food to go using the self-service kiosk. It was a little complicated, but the barista was kind enough to help me out. I waited on the shaded patio for my order and I appreciated how nicely everything was spread out and there was a lot of shade. It wasn't overly busy, which was nice for 10am on a Sunday. read more

Whoever trains the staff does an excellent job, they have always been friendly and professional, and honestly one of the last times we were there, the lady who owns the place went above and beyond for us. We were waiting for 20 mins to be seated even though we saw open tables in the area. It was a patron that told me that I we were waiting for full service and it might take a while. The patron, not the owner, suggested I use the grab and go feature on the computer. By this time we were so irritated to have been spoken to that owner would seat us 3-4 times and watched her fill coffee orders for 2 tables and the server walk past us 3 times we didn't have much faith in the food. Seating people at an open table is a 3 min task at most, if that cannot be done, then a meal would be too much of a task. read more

Server seemed to take offence that my friend asked politely if there was another table than what we were being offered. Once seated, my friend asked for a large mug of coffee and I asked for water. She returned with a small mug of coffee and no water. I asked two more separate times for some water, no water showed up. Ordered food and continued to wait. We waited about another hour, no food, water or explanation. Watched other tables being served water. Asked a male server for water, he returned with 2 glasses and place them heavily on our table with attitude. That was enough, we got up and left leaving 5 dollars for the coffee. Hit and miss. I had the Reuben sandwich and I found it quite good. I also had the largest cup of tea I've ever had which was great since I didn't have to ask for refills. The chorizo and shrimp skillet was good but they were a bit skimpy on the key ingredients. There were more potatoes and sweet potatoes in the skillet than anything else. Our table also had the huevos ranchero and french toast and they were both good but nothing really special. They have a very large menu with a vast choice. We had great service and our waiter was super nice. They served the French toast and a side of extra's about 15 to 20 minutes before everyone else got served so that was a little weird. This used to be a good restaurant. The past few times we have found the service to be slow. This morning 4 in our party went to Cherries for breakfast. We stood at their door for a minimum of 10 minutes, while staff walked by, yet not one acknowledged us or indicated we'd be attended to. We finally left. read more

Have I told you that this is my favourite restaurant? I bought a house about a year ago and my realtor knew I was going to be tighter with my money, so as a thank you gift for him being my realtor, he gave me a card with a bunch of gift certificates in it and 2 $25 ones to Cherries. I had never heard of it before and was a bit skeptical. I tried it out and have been a regular customer ever since. The food is amazing and it's always packed. It's order and pay at the till and find your own seat. But, if you make a reservation they serve you like a regular restaurant. Reservations are a good idea as it can be super busy, especially on the weekend. I always tend to order the eggs Benedict as they are amazing...but so is the Reese's stuffed french toast with peanut butter and Nutella and the Breaky poutine. Yumm! read more

Neat place to have breakfast! It was fairly quiet when we arrived around noon. We were able to walk right up to the front and order breakfast, pay and grab our cutlery and condiments and our piece of plastic fruit that was also our food table number. We ordered lattes which you get yourself as well- I have no problem with this as I don't mind moving a little before I stuff my face. The lattes were creamy and delicious served in a glass mug! As for food, I ordered a Breakfast Wrap which wasn't the greatest. The wrap was huge stuffed with blandish egg, a couple pieces of bacon, bits of veggies, cheese and sour cream and a side of fairly decent potatoes. Honestly, I think this was my fault as they had much tastier options on the menu. My partner ordered the Duck Hash -Way better tasting than mine! I would definitely try this place again and go for something else on the menu, maybe the eggs benedict. read more

I really want to like Cherries. It's close to our house, and they have a great atmosphere. But after frequenting this restaurant 6 - 8 times over the past 12 months, they haven't shown any improvement in some key areas. GO TO Charlotte And The Quail UP THE STREET INSTEAD. Pros: - There's not much else in the area. We went there today because - The atmosphere is warm and upbeat - Food quality: Above average. Cons - Allergy sensitivity: Every. Single. Meal. had something wrong with it. Either obvious (adding toast when ordered without toast AND mentioning explicitly having a gluten intolerance) or more subtle (bacon with flecks of scrambled egg after declaring a severe egg allergy) - Service: Today we waited for 45 minutes for a regular menu item (no alterations), after which we gave up because my parents had to get back to the ferry. Even the refund took about 10 minutes to process. - Model: There's limiting seating, and customers have to fight one another to grab tables. Staff make no effort to queue up or otherwise manage the process. - Staff: The staff try their best, but seems like they work for a demotivating employer. Really not impressed. I arrived for my first (and last) visit to Cherries this morning. We arrived, and joined the lineup which was almost out the door. I thought this was a good sign, indicating that the food was good. The hostess immediately brought menus to us where we were standing in line, so we'd be ready to order when our turn came. I mistook this as a sign of a well-organized restaurant who has been obviously well versed at handling a large volume of customers. After about 25 minutes, we made it to the head of line, ready to place our order. But we were told that we couldn't order before we had a table. We asked if we should go pick a table ourselves, or wait for them to assign one to us? It would have been nice to know this at the time the hostess (seemingly efficiently) gave us menus when we arrived. We were told that there were no tables available just now, but we could wait outside until one was ready. We took them up on this suggestion, and found a table to wait at on the patio. After about another 30 minutes of waiting (close to an hour in total since our arrival), the hostess came out to inform us that a table had now opened up for us. We followed her back inside to the cash to place our order, but were now told that the kitchen had just informed them that they couldn't accept any new orders for another 1 hour (!!?!?). No thanks. Surely, they could have been more up front with us right when we arrived as to how backed up they were at the moment? Instead, they let us waste nearly a full hour, before being able to tell us that we'd have to wait at least another full hour before food might be on its way. I can't imagine this level of disorganization and lack of communication being a fluke, as these are the situations that they must deal with every busy weekend. I wish I had something to say about the food here, but that will unfortunately never happen. I'd suggest that management urgently needs to figure out how to properly handle their busy times and overflow situations, in order to join the ranks of restaurants worthy of belonging to the category "service industry". I'd call this a very un-funny joke, rather than a restaurant. read more

With the promising reviews of Cherries' food, and tired of long waits to get in for brunch in Victoria, we decided to give Cherries a try. In hindsight, we should have visited one of our regular spots... Cherries does offer an inviting atmosphere, with tasteful décor, up beat music, and friendly staff that makes you feel welcome. Then, they take your order and that's where the welcome feeling stops. Generally, I'm a fan of the "café (ie. Cafeteria) approach," having frequented such places in my hometown of Seattle. Where Cherries differs is that water, beverage refills, cutlery service are self-service, and you have to wait in line with other customers for your refill of coffee. You can make reservations for full table service a day in advance, where those services are provided for free. Would it be that much of a hindrance and an increase to fiscal overhead to have someone circulate with a pot of coffee? I ordered the bacon pancakes with ruhrei (Mennonite scrambled eggs), and my partner ordered the Breakfast poutine (pulled pork, poached egg, on a bed of pan fried potatoes with poutine). It took just a little over 50 minutes for our dishes to make their way out of the kitchen... and only after we noticed that customers who had arrived after us were being served their food, before us. The bacon pancakes were sadly very disappointing. They were very heavy, almost the consistency of a biscuit, soggy bacon, and no flavor. The ruhrei were not the typical Mennonite scrambled eggs that I'm familiar with. Instead, they were normally fluffy scrambled eggs with butter and maple syrup... somewhat tasty, but not what I had expected. My partners breakfast poutine also had similar results. While the pulled pork had a good taste and the potatoes were seasoned well, some of the potatoes were burned and the poutine had a slightly burned flavor, which overpowered the rest of his dish. The hollandaise on the poached egg was cold. No one checked in after our meals were brought to us to see how we enjoyed the food. Cherry's feels like a restaurant designed by folks unfamiliar with restaurant operations. When you arrive there's no indication about whether to seat yourself, or wait. We waited. Then were told by a rushed staffer to seat ourselves (there were 4 other people in the place at this time). Then 5 minutes later menus arrived. Then a person arrived in a chef's jacket, who we assumed was Cherry, asking if we'd had explained to us their 'system', which she called 'cafe-style' -- meaning one goes to the till to order, then waits for their meal to be delivered at their table. This resulted in us waiting 10 minutes in line just to be able to order as there were a number of coffee-drink ordering people ahead of us. It's a goofy 'system', and one that suggests an attempt to reduce labour costs to the detriment of the paying customer's experience. At the entrance there's an empty display case topped with empty cake displays, adjacent to which is a plethora of Dan-D-Pak items for sale (does the owner also own shares??) A tip: a sign at the entrance to indicate customers should seat themselves, and an explanation on the menu of the 'system' would work wonders for helping customers understand. The seating is exceedingly confusing and uncomfortable without a single place to sit that invites a pleasant breakfast experience (a strange picnic table in the centre of the room, four chairs occupying a tone of space in a coffee circle, high level chairs that are difficult for the short or elderly, or metal patio chairs - a mishmash of unappealing choices). The food was just okay. My dining partner loved his home made sausage: the menu is very meat-heavy. My potatoes were hard and undercooked. I ordered a veg bennie, but could taste animal in it - some ingredient had been cooked in animal fat, which causes me some GI upset. I'm sure it's a nice addition to the neighbourhood where there is a lack of amenities, but for those with choices it's probably not worth the trip unless driving by and not too fussy about the above elements. Or wanting a Dan-D-Pak bag of yogurt-covered peanuts. In the end, we won't we back, sorry. read more

This place is close to where I live, it's convenient for me to come here for brunch. The way the restaurant operates is kind of awkward, you come in, grab a menu, figure out what you want and find a table. Then when you know what you want, you get up and go to the till and order your food and drinks, and hope no one has accidentally stolen your table... I feel a little bit weird about the way they operate but I guess some people might not... The food has always been delicious! My favourite, something you may want to share with someone else because the portion is HUGE, is the Nutella stuffed french toast, MMM!!! You must try it! The drinks are good, no complaints, better than Starbucks if you ask me... and they have options for those of us who don't want to drink a gallon of cow's boob liquids. This place is kind of like a cafe as well, one where you just walk in and grab a coffee to go, and perhaps a fresh made muffin. read more

I can only comment on the breakfasts but I started with a wrap on my first visit with my mom and grew from there. Amazing menu offering unique spins on classics such as eggs benny or pancakes, waffles, breakfast poutine because it's Canada! Try everything and at reasonable prices! First weekend in a while, the service was deplorable! We yhoughy that we'd give another try the following Sunday. Worse than first visit. So friends from Saanich asked us to go to breakfast, where to go? Well guess what! They were set in Cherrie's. So, third time was an absolute disaster! 5 tables available but all dirty, no bus, 20 minutes to be seated. Seated, asked for coffee. Never came. Waiter came to take our order, "coffe please" ... OK said he. Food arrived, STILL NO COFFEE! This was now about 1 hour since we arrived. Food was good, service deplorable! Coffee, no cream or milk. Asked 4 times for milk. Never came. When paying the check I mentioned it. The woman saud it's on your table in the jar. (It wasn't). 3 stars = dog friendly, tasty food, and outside seating. Service is so seriously lacking, runnung about like headless chickens and passing by tables that haven't been cleared. Every staff member walked outsude to take orders or to deliver food each time walking by tables of dirty dushes as folks were waiting to be seated. Sadly, we'll not return to this establishment. read more

We were visiting from Seattle and stopped in a few minutes after 4, the owner was there and waved us in to order some coffee and pastries. The coffee was excellent, she is a total coffee snob which is an awesome thing for a coffee shop owner to be! The pastries were baked in house and were very tasty. The owner was very personable, we chatted with her for quite a while, and it was very nice of her to invite us in even though they had closed already! We were headed out to Butchart Gardens and wanted to find a place to eat on the way, and found this place. Loved it. The owner is Mennonite, and so are a lot of the items on the menu. We've never had this before. My daughter ordered a plain hot dog (she's nearly five, so not really going to eat much more). The staff forgot about her order, but quickly made it right. And added potatoes that the child didn't like (she rarely likes potatoes). I ordered a pulled pork sandwich, and my husband ordered eggs benedict with the Mennonite sausage. I initially thought the bbq sauce on my sandwich was a bit too sweet, but then I decided I really liked it. It was just different, and I had to keep going. I polished it off before I ever made it to my potatoes, which I enjoyed very much, thank you. My husband was not a fan of the sausage, but he did enjoy getting to try something he'd never had before, and likely would not have much chance to get again. So thank you for being different! The place itself was really cool inside, decorated very well. We were a bit thrown by the help-yourself water stand, but that works for us too. Just different. We usually like different, and this place would definitely be a place we'd come back to. read more

The food is decent but.....in what world do you set up a restaurant as a half bistro/cafe style in a restaurant sized room? You have "servers" that come bring the food and clear plates. That's it. You order at the counter, then go get your own coffee, water, cutlery and napkins. Not too bad in a cafe sized room but when you are walking from the back of the restaurant to the front, through the line up twice, all while carrying hot coffee and water. If they can improver their service model and therefore up the tips, it would attract better servers and not just glorified "busboys". Also, the prices need work. $21 for a coffee and a "big boy" breakfast is way too much. $13-15 at most places in Victoria. read more

I tried Cherries over the weekend after reading the reviews on Yelp. The place was mostly empty on a Saturday morning around 9am. The format was as described in the reviews. Grab a menu, order, find a table and wait. I tried the duck hash,a side of Mennonite sausage and a latte. I spoke to the cook as I walked to the back to sit down. She was friendly and engaged. The food came very quickly. The sweet potato hash was topped with a duck sausage patty that was sweetened with raisins and a poached egg. All of this was covered with a layer of slightly warm hollandaise sauce. The sausage was sweet, the hollandaise bland and sweet potato hash mediocre. The Mennonite sausage was sliced down the side and fried to warm it up. Overall the presentation was good but the taste only okay. The latte was wonderful: properly steamed and frothy. The service model was awkward and definitely subtracted from the experience. Since it was not crowded it worked but I could see a problem arising when busy. The staff were very friendly and helpful so I will probably return to give it another try with other choices. read more

There is a reason why this place has remained in business and you'll have to taste and see for yourself how good it is! I had the worst restaurant experience at Cherries. Due to noisy neighbors neither my friend or I got much sleep, so I decided to treat us to a yummy breakfast so we could start the day right. I know that the wait at Cherries can be long so I decided to call ahead to place our to go order so I could just run in to pick it up. That's when the troubles started. When I called the phone was answered and I said I wanted to place a to go order. I was told to hold on a minute and could hear the phone being put down. During the next 5 minutes I could hear people placing orders and getting drinks but no one came back to the phone. I finally gave up and hung up, and thought I would call back. I did several times and each time got the message "The person you are calling can not receive calls at this time". So I said forget it and went down to order and wait for our food. When I got there I of course had to spend 10 minutes waiting in line to order. When I was finally able to order I was told it would be 15-20 mins, at this point I mentioned I knew it would be a wait thats why I tried calling and told her what had happened. She picked up the phone and told me it was still on, so I told her that's because I had been put on hold and forgotten about. Finally I received our food and went over to my friends house so we could enjoy our breakfast. When I opened up my order I was very unhappy to see that my egg white omelet was in fact very yellow. I have stomach issues and can not eat egg yolks, because of this anytime I order food I'm sure to mention a couple times that it needs to be egg whites. So I called back to the restaurant and thankfully was not put on hold. I told her what happened and was told she would put the order in on a rush so when I got back to the restaurant I wouldn't have to wait. So off I went again and at this point was not surprised to find my food was not ready when I arrived. In fact while I was waiting a few other orders came out of the kitchen. At this point I texted my friend to let her know she should just eat because there was no reason she should wait and let her food get cold. Finally I received my order and for the first time in this whole mess did I finally get an apology for all the problems. I knew the owner wasn't there so I thought I would email her through the website so she would know about what happened and could do what she could to make sure this didn't happen to someone else. I was very upset when a week later I have still not received a follow up email from her just to say she received my email and apologize for the inconvenience. Yes the food can be good, I have had both good and bad experiences with their food. What I believe is you can have the best food in the world but if you have bad customer service it really doesn't matter. If she had responded to me and apologized I would be ok going back on occasion to eat there again, but the way it's been handled there is no way I will go back. This was my friends first experience with this restaurant and she will not be returning. We have let others know there are plenty of other great restaurants in town, ones where the customer service is amazing, but this is definitely not one of them. read more

After sitting down we were told that we were not allowed to sit at the table we had chosen, with no explanation. Food took forever to arrive, as did the condiments I requested from a staff member who seemed quite lost. When the condiments did arrive I was confused as to why they were in packets like at a fast food restaurant. Bottom line, if I want to order sub-par breakfast at a counter from staff who don't care about their job and have my condiments in packets, I'll save my money and go to McDonalds. read more

The food was pretty good...too bad though because the set up of the restaurant and the service sucked bad. Now...when I say the set up was bad, here's how stupid it is. You arrive and wait in one line...get your table and then sit down. Then you get into another line to get your coffee. For 4 of us, I waited in line; got 4 coffees, had to pay the bill and get my own cream, sugar, spoons and napkins....all in all getting 4 coffees, 15 minutes. (no exaggeration). Then...finally having 4 coffees, get back in the fist line and order your meal. The lineup got long so it was almost 10 more minutes to order. We placed our orders, and it took 1 hour and 9 minutes (we looked at the receipt for a time stamp) to get our meals (well...at least 3 of them). When the 4th one arrived, the other 3 of us had finished. My son on his 31st birthday (the 4th meal) was about half way through his meal, the other 3 of us had finished when a server asked how everything was. I almost fell of my bench (it was a bench I was sitting on) that he waited until 3 of us were done and then had the stones to ask my son 2/3rd the way through his meal. In addition to all of that, my wife had to grab the cutlery and napkins, I stole a plastic jug and 4 glasses for water and we literally served ourselves and in the process had to stand in 4 separate lines to order coffee (twice), once to order our meals and once more to pay....The lines get pretty long but I can't understand why other than the good food. When the couple sharing our picnic table were brought coffee to their table with cream, sugar, spoons and such, I asked guy carrying the pot of coffee, what gives with others getting coffee served to them and us having to wait in line after line...the answer...."they had a reservation. He actually was holding the coffee pot in his hand that was half full of coffee and walked away with it while my wife and I and my son and his wife sat with 4 empty coffee mugs. This place sucks hard and the good food isn't worth the absolutely beyond poor service. I just bought a house in the neighborhood and will never go back. I have enjoyed Cherries each of the 3 times I have been there. It is a real delight and much welcomed/needed dining establishment in this rather blah intersection of Victoria. Upon entering each time I have been personally greeted by a friendly staffer or Cherry herself and introduced to the format of how to order, then I am presented a piece of plastic fruit (so servers k now where to deliver orders to accurately) and pay and I seat myself in one of the many styles of seating available. I do like the communal/family style table in the middle of the front area as you can observe all the action and read one of the newspapers provided complimentary. They make good specialty coffees and have the hugest cinammon buns I have every seen. People often come in just to buy the buns to go!The breakfast food is average- I do appreciate the use of local ingredients and and attempts at differentiation in the dishes. The dining area in the back of the restaurant seems like a "deadzone", lacking in atompshere compared to the front area. Also, the sterile overhead lighting could be improved to add warmth to this otherwise hip, "new york-ish" feeling restaurant. I will be back:) Thank you! read more
