Let me just start off by saying I have never complained about a restaurant. Ever. Or left without finishing a meal. I had the worst experience all around. The worst service by far and inedible food. Even by my boyfriend who I have never seen not eat whatever is put in front of him (even my cooking) First off we showed up and had to wait 10 minutes for menus because they had none, after we received our menu we ordered tea and coffee which we didn't get until 45 minutes after we had been seated. That in itself was absolutely absurd! We ordered standard tea and coffee! Not like we were ordering lattes. We also never received any water. The server was no where to be found to even ask about the status of our drinks. They had two servers for the entire restaurant on a Sunday. Stop being so cheap and hire more people! Everyone looked pretty pissed off and we could hear the couple behind us saying "what the hell is going on" It was a big disorganized mess of a restaurant. They never checked on us after the meal arrived. My boyfriends breakfast poutine came out 10 minutes before mine did. A couple minutes to run back sure, but he was taking orders and doing other things in between going to get my meal while my boyfriends was sitting there getting cold. In total in waited over an hour for our meals to arrive. We waited so long the plastic carrot on the table was starting to look delicious, I literally would have eaten anything. Until my meal arrived. We ordered the Huevos rancheros and breakfast poutine. The breakfast poutine was alright. I ended up having to switch with my boyfriend because the huevos was covered with peppers which wasn't listed on the menu and 90% of the meal was peppers. More like pepper rancheros. The breakfast poutine was nicely flavoured, however poorly put together. There was no hollandaise as advertised on the menu and one giant cheese clump. But it was okay and I ate it anyways. When I looked up my boyfriend was unhappily picking through the pepper forest to try and find something edible. When he saw a huge pool of oil sitting on the bottom of the plate. The whole meal was covered in so much oil and it was now settling in the bottom. He was disgusted from the couple bites he did eat for the first time I actually heard him complain about food. To top it off they charge premium prices for under average service/food quality. They did take the huevos off the bill, after some arguing. They only wanted to take the 50% off but I was so upset I did not want to pay for this aweful experience. PS their excuse for the oil was because it was busy it was sitting. If this is a known problem they need to address it and figure out a different way to prepare this item or take it off the menu. The management should take a day off and head to spoons or floyds to see how a busy restaurant should be run. read more

Excellent! I had eggs benedict with smoked salmon and Brie. To die for! The service was very good and the owner even came out to make sure that everything was fine. Very nice lady! My friend sent back is on it because it was too well done and they let him keep the first one so he could nibble on the potatoes and toast while he waited. He loved his omelet as well. Tomatoes, spinach, feta. Everything including the coffee was delicious. read more

I went for breakfast after a run with 4 friends. We waited over half an hour after being seated to have our order taken or to be offered coffee. There was 1 server for 15 tables. We were never offered a coffee refill. The breakfast sandwich was over priced and not good (fried egg very much over cooked). We tried to give feedback to the owner at which time it was apparent what the problem was. She was extremely defensive and publicly humiliated one of her staff saying "I would fire her immediately" and said the one she felt bad for was her cook. Never apologized in any way for the service. Without exception we all agreed we would not return to this restaurant. I would think unless the owner changes her approach it will not succeed. I felt bad for the staff. Definitely would not suggest going to this place. read more

We loved the atmosphere of this place when we went recently on a Sunday morning. Was surprised and a bit confused with the whole self service thing. The live music and patio was nice. We enjoyed everything a lot and the potatoes that came with the bennies were really delicious. So was the peach pear smoothie! All good but 2 drinks and 2 breakfasts was $50... We drove out of downtown seeking a new brunch experience. I had high hopes for Cherries, and still think it has potential, but we were left unimpressed. The set up doesn't make sense, and is unclear when you first walk in. There are hosts and servers (all of whom are very nice) but you have to order at the counter and get your own table settings and drinks. The tables were dirty, as they would get cleared but not wiped by the staff. The menu was interesting and I bet some of it is delicious but we weren't overly thrilled with our meals. I was given a vegan tofu skillet which was nicely presented in a cast iron pan but the tofu was rubbery and tasteless, so my $12 breakfast was basically just sauteed spinach and potato. There was a mixup with my toast, which I asked for several times - it arrived well after I ate, and came buttered (not dry as requested). My boyfriend's meal was passable but definitely could have been more impressive (see places like Jam for how to do fancy meat-infused pancakes etc). The counter staff were friendly and receptive, and Cherry offered another skillet on the house in the future. I was pleased that she personally addressed the situation and apologised, but she also blamed her staff for the issues. If you think your servers and cooks aren't competent, you are probably not training them well enough. And if I said I didn't enjoy the tofu, you shouldn't tell me how much other people love it - especially without seeing the stuff I left on my plate. Perhaps it was an anomaly, but I eat enough tofu to know when it's cooked well. I don't yet know if I will bother to go back but I do hope some things will be taken into consideration, because it seems like a cute place with potential that just needs to be more organized. read more

This was hands down the worst restaurant experience I have ever had. And I've been to a lot of restaurants. I don't even know where to start with this review. First off, it took an hour and a half to get our food. Everything was wrong even though our server had written all of our orders down. We had a party of 6 (which they took a reservation for when they apparently weren't supposed to) 2 of us finished our meals before any more food came out. When the other meals did come out they were not correct and had to be sent back, my boyfriends eggs were undercooked. We weren't told until the end that they don't do table service. Our server was friendly, but clearly had no idea what she was doing. When we finally got all our food and were clearly dissatisfied, they offered us 10% off. 10%! That doesn't even cover the tax. Eventually they ended up covering our bill after we expressed that 10% was a pathetic compensation for what we had just gone through. I will never and I mean NEVER return here. The staff are friendly and were very apologetic but that is the only nice thing I have to say about this place. read more

TERRIBLE SERVICE, first of all for the price of the entrées there should be a tableservice offered. When you lineup when you first come in the door and you make your order you are expected to leave a tip at that point. This is before knowing what your service or your food is going to be like. The self-serve format is not working here. I think if cherries wants to succeed totally they need to get it together and get some servers. Secondly I believe they need to work on the cleanliness and Hygiene of the restaurant. I make this review after having visited this restaurant five times. Each time and each visit there has been a problem. Either there are no tables available to sit at. Or there are no supplies in the self-serve area. Or the self-serve area needs some attention in some manner. Showing up ordering food not having a place to sit and then your food becoming available, is the worst format I've ever seen for a restaurant. I have actually spoken to Cherry about a lot of the problems that I think she is experiencing. Like for instance in the early days not opening on Sundays is completely ridiculous for a breakfast restaurant. I'm glad to see that it is now open on Sunday mornings. Last Sunday, Father's Day I went to Cherries for the very first time. It was heavenly. The scrambled eggs were done to perfection - moist, light and very tasty. The bacon and toast were done well, warm and I couldn't believe I had finally found the perfect breakfast place. Today, Saturday, I took my visiting son as he loves a good breakfast out. It was a completely different experience. I ordered exactly the same thing. The scrambled eggs were not well mixed (lots of white throughout), and they were very dry. The bacon was burned and the toast cold. How disappointing! Here I thought I had found a place to go out for breakfast and reliably get great food and now I am back searching for my breakfast spot. Maybe it was two different chefs, but whatever, if I can't rely on it being great, it is not worth the trip to that part of town. read more

What a serendipitous chance that we read a Yelp review & went here. We ordered a breakfast platter & the grownup grilled cheese. That sandwich was fabulous!! Been here about six times over the past 2 years with New Year's day being the most recent. I always have a breakfast item but friends have had other lunch items and really enjoyed them. When we showed up, on a whim New Year's day around noon, we figured we wouldn't get a seat and there would be a wait. Luckily for us we had just missed their rush and a table had opened up so we grabbed it. We made it easy for them that day. The three of us all had the Big Boss breakfast seeing that we woke up late and felt famished, which is something I typically wouldn't have ordered and I'll explain why later. The menu says it comes with two eggs any style (we asked for our eggs to be over easy - med) with two slices of bacon, two sausages, corned beef hash, and toast and one buttermilk pancake, and that costs $16.95. I like brunch, and I've gone to many a restaurant in my time and ordered the "Big Whatever" on the menu and paid $14-$16 for it typically. To be honest, I always thought it was a scam because they give you some average bacon from Sysco, a couple of pork breakfast sausages that you could have picked up from Thrifty's and the hash is usually this bland un-seasoned mess which I'll taste but inevitably leave on the plate. In short, I leave feeling ripped off most times so I don't normally go for the "Big Whatever" anymore, but as I said above, I was hungry and didn't want to make life too difficult for the kitchen. Being an ex-chef I expected that the kitchen staff would have been totally burnt out after a heavy New Year's Day brunch crowd. I remember how nasty it can get on days like this with everyone wanting their food before they even walk thru the door so it makes it really difficult on the staff to keep the high standards while attempting to speed things along. I was fully expecting to have a long wait for food or a less than stellar meal because of the time of day and I was "okay" if that happened. However, we were very pleased to see that the kitchen staff were still pumping out great quality food as if we were the very first through the door that day. The first two platters came out and the runner mentioned that the kitchen felt that they might have over cooked the eggs a bit on the first two platters so they were going to bring out a couple of replacements. How nice, the kitchen recognized that they might have screwed up and was attempting to fix it BEFORE a complaint. My food came out along with the extra eggs but to our sensibilities, the eggs were spot on. The first thing we noticed was that the sausages were patties and not links that had been in the steam table all morning long or some thin little dried out puck of a patty. No, they where about 2.5 inch in diameter and 1 inch thick, moist and seasoned beautifully. The bacon, was the apple wood smoked bacon they serve, slight smoke flavour with a nice sweetness to it. Definitely not run of the mill bacon. The hash was filled(!!) with corned beef and seasoned throughout which impressed me so much that I started to look to see who's hash I could steal when they were not looking. The pancake was huge, fluffy and cooked perfectly. They even had two pieces of Texas style toast, which was probably not really needed, but was actually buttered from crust to crust unlike so many other establishments that only manage to get the butter in the middle of the toast leaving a dry gap of an inch around the edges. In short, the kitchen staff showed a genuine LUV of what they do. The meal was spot on and I can't say enough about good it was. I've read posts here slagging the service, the wait times, the prices...well guess what folks, good food takes time, quality ingredients cost money, and our servers always had a smile. If you want it cheaper, lesser quality, and someone to top up your coffee ever 2 minutes then this place isn't for you. But if you want to know what its like to have people that LUV cooking make you a meal, then this is the place to be. read more

We had heard this was a good place to try. The prices seemed a bit high for self serve but we kept open minded. The staff at the till are very friendly. The food was in general not good at all. Collectively we thought everything was "mushy and sloppy". I had the turkey saandwich, granted I didn't get the cranberry sauce which may have added flavour however the bread was "wet" and was greasy not with butter not sure what, the turkey was plentiful but had not taste, must say the salad it came with was good. My daughter ordered Eggs Benedict with eggs soft and they came hard, so the server asked if she'd like them soft so we said yes, she said do you want hollandaise sauce and we said yes (whats an egg benney withoutsauce) the sauce was cold, and the potatoes were burnt, the english muffin didn't seem toasted. My husband ordered the pulled pork hot dog which was fine however his potatoes were also burnt. We wouldn't go back. read more
