The Chestnut Tree is different than all the other restaurants on the square in Denton. The options are a lot lighter and healthier than the pub food and dives in the area, and that makes it a must-visit if you're downtown and not in the mood for burgers or fried stuff! I like all the man menu stuff, but I could really use just a regular beef burger. That being said, all the buffalo burgers seem to be delicious. The pulled pork was awesome too, and the potato salad is really really good but sometimes it's INTENSELY mayonnaise-y. My fiancé like all the salads and soups and sandwiches she's gotten, and that's really what this place is about. It's a cozy place and the staff is very nice. Mr. Smidgens here!! Okay, I am about to tell you something about Mr. Smidgens. He used to haaaaaaate pimento cheese sandwiches!! It's not that I hated the taste, It just never looked appealing. I had the pleasure of trying Robynn G's homemade pimento cheese. It was awesome!! Now, to the Chestnut Tree's. Having swayed Mr. Smidgens's taste buds, we made our way to the CT. When you walk in, one of the first things you see is a display of salt and pepper shakers to your right and a bar with 4 taps on your left. I was not expecting the beer taps in a tea room. I was expecting Old ladies sitting around drinking tea and eating cucumber sandwiches whilst they gossiped about the local harlots! To my dismay there were young and old folks alike. The place is very eclectic and the staff is oh so very friendly. We were seated right away. They bring you the tiniest of muffins. They are just what you need to prime your mouth for what it is about to receive! Robynn had been here before so, she knew what to order. We both ordered the half a pimento sandwich with the very savory tomato basil soup. Once we received our food it did not disappoint. The pimento cheese was heaped onto the most delicious beer bread I have ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, tasted!!! I mean, there are many words in the English language, but you just have to try this bread to even fathom what I am explaining to you!! This is really good southern food. I went here on sunday morning brunch with my boyfriend and man was walking in a surprise to the both of us. I mean I had read up on this place before coming here and yeah this place can be accurately be described as sickeningly cute to some. As for me I liked he scenery there were local artist's work hanging off of the walls that I enjoyed looking at. Other than that it's easy to see that the age group this shop caters to is not for the young. Rather it's catered towards our grandparents generation which isn't a bad thing. Now into the food. For 9 bucks I got a massive plate of potatoes, that was spiced heavily, a warm buttery croissant and a huge omelette. On top of that while we were waiting we got a basket that hd yummy mini muffins which I used the cranberry butter to top it off. Man did I ever have left overs by the end of this. My boyfriend got a breakfast sandwich that had ham, a perfectly poached egg all on an English muffin with a side of fresh fruit all for about 8 bucks. Okay, for those on here complaining its your grandma's house and the decor is kitschy...YOU CAME TO A TEA-ROOM. If it was named Chesnut Tree Cabaret or Chesnut Tree Bar then you could be disappointed in wicker, floral, and chandeliers but until then, stop with taking its scores down for decor. Okay now more importantly THE FOOD here is good. I went today for a chicken salad sandwich on beer bread. Chicken salad is good but not amazing or extraorindary. The beer bread however is WONDERFUL. It is a bit salty at times and sweet at others. A nice crust and good consistency. It did make the sandwich extra thick and hard to bite into at times, but I am a trooper. I had the Mediterranean salad with the sandwich. The dressing was meh. It was mostly oil and hardly any vinaigrer for a vinaigrette. I switched to the honey garlic. YES. The salad had goat cheese instead of feta (i love goat cheese no complaints but this could stir up someone who doesnt). It also had avocado so other than olives nothing about it was very Mediterranean. My friend had tomato basil soup which had a good flavor and texture to it. Not smooth but no hard to handle chunks either. Service at noon was bustling but we were taken care of promptly if not by our waiter, then by one we flagged down. I will be back. read more

I visited here with couple of my co-workers for lunch a week ago. What a quaint little restaurant! Don't really know why I haven't visited this place before, but it will become one of my frequently visited lunch places from now on. The service here is superb! Our waitress, Lauren, was very friendly and attentive. We all got our orders fast and at the same time even though it was a full-house on a Tuesday (A great place for having work-day lunch). Oh, and those mini-muffins! I could assure you that it will need some discipline to not keep eating those delicious little snack while waiting for your meal to be served. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how one see it, my order came in fast enough for saving them from being completed wiped out by me. I loved my tomato basil soup, and my co-worker loved her gorgeous looking Mediterranean salad. Two stars for this place is a little unfair, so let me tell you why it's worth four stars: The chicken salad sandwich on beer bread is a must. It's simple and delicious. The bread is crusty, salty, and a little sweet. I love it. The rich, moist carrot cake and coffee for dessert is a huge win. Their carrot cake is delicious. None of their soups are salty, which suggests they might not be out of a can. Why does this place not get four stars? It's kitschy. Sickeningly sweet cute. My grandmother would LOVE it. Get the club sandwich on beer bread. You won't regret it. The edges of the bread are sweet and salty and crispy. It's one of the best sandwiches I have ever had and so unique. Portion is incredible for the quality of the ingredients and the price you pay. Huge pieces of avocado. Add the tomato jam for $1 to make it extra fancy. The entire menu looks wonderful, but I'm happy to say that I will come for that sandwich every time. P.S. I asked my server if they sell the beer bread, he came back and said he had permission to sell me one loaf for $7.50. It was a giant and dense loaf of goodness. What a fabulous find this place is! Tucked away in the Denton square, this place is more than just a teahouse. The farmer's salad I had was exceptionally fresh. The other people in my group had sandwiches and variations on the Eggs Benedict. The eggs were cooked perfectly and the hollandaise is the real deal. They also had a champagne/cider cocktail special, which we all took part of (well, all of us who were of legal age). Chestnut Tree also has local artists' work displayed on the walls. The decor of this place is charming and cozy. And yes, the tea (I tried the lavender Earl Grey and the white Earl Grey) is delicious, too (loose leaf served in a pot with a strainer). Reservations were maid ahead of time for our party of 12, and we were accommodated nicely. The service was friendly, helpful, and timely. The person who introduced me to this place said a husband and wife team runs the place and the food is locally sourced. I'll be sure to come back as often as I can. I'm thrilled to have a cool place like this in Denton. Tip: Parking in the Denton Square has a 2 hour limit...it really does. They chalk your tire and it's 2 hours from that. I've heard the parking ticket is $25. I only know this because of our leisurely lunch--some of us got out to move our cars to avoid the ticket. The thing is, after eating at the restaurant, you may want to head over to Jupiter House Coffee for a coffee and spend several more hours at Recycled Books and Records or the Downtown Mini Mall. Ok, so this place is totally kitschy, and it tends to draw the grandma crowd. Ignore them. The food is GOOD. Fresh, consistent, reasonably price. Several flavors of iced tea, the black currant being my favorite. My husband absolutely HATES the decor, gets a giggle out of the old ladies gossiping, but puts up with it because the mediterranean wrap is awesome. They serve these little muffins when you sit down. I'm not a bread fan so the hubby gets to scarf mine, but they seem extremely popular. Service always friendly and quick. Menu consists of sandwiches, wraps, salads, soups, and a daily special that is sometimes a quiche or hot sandwich. The four stars are for the food. Nice atmosphere but worst $11.00 club sandwich ever!! Skimpy one slice of turkey and minimal cheese or bacon but driest sandwich on the planet. Stale bread and hardly any mayo. When I got home the next day I made myself a turkey club with perhaps $3 worth of ingredients that was at least five times tastier and generous!! Even with crowds of people in Denton for the antique auto show and people crowding into other restaurants, the Chestnut Tree had only 3 tables full. I'm certain now I know why! I have been to the Chestnut Tree many times during the years and have enjoyed myself but each time the experience gets worse and worse. Which is disappointing. This last time we went the place seemed very dark. Not sure if it was our location in the restaurant or the restaurant overall. Our waiter was just this side of pleasant, however, everyone else seemed nice. The food was mediocre and uninspiring. It wasn't unflavorful, just meh. Chestnut Tree is a very cozy and cute Bistro. It sits on the square in Denton, across from the courthouse. I had the Eggs Sardou and it was amazing. Loved the muffin bites they serve as an appetizer ( free ). My server, Mallory was very helpful in helping me choose my entree and attentive to my table. Stopped by for lunch the other day and was very pleased. I had the club sandwich with beer bread... Heavenly!! The bacon was crisp, turkey was flavorful and the bread and a unique sweet yet savory flavor. The chips I believe we're homemade and they were also good. I also ordered the hot peach mango tea and it was pure goodness. My lunch mates also enjoyed their food. The portions are generous and our waiter was very patient. Perfect local eatery! The food was so great. I had my turkey and avocado sandwich on the house-made beer bread, which was both filling and satisfying. For dessert, I tried the turtle cheesecake. 2022....This is NO LONGER the delightful, charming, independent gem on the square. Last time I came (perhaps a year ago), I decided I wouldn't return. Daughter's birthday was today and we have so many wonderful memories from birthday lunches at this restaurant that I brought her here and hoped our last visit was just an "off day" for the cook/waitstaff. Nope. No such luck. We ordered chicken salad on sour dough. The bread was so stale and tough, it was inedible. Daughter really liked her salad, but unfortunately ate half of it dry before she encountered the half that actually had all the salad dressing. Really? Too much work to toss the salad before serving? I had quiche that must have been tossed in the microwave before bringing it out...it turned tough as turnips. The final straw...daughter said you have to try this sweetened butter on the muffins. I allowed her to put some on my muffin & then asked how she figured it was sweetened. Honey? "Nope" daughter responded, "They used sugar. It wasn't properly emulsified and the butter is gritty." If service had been cheerful and good, I would have difficulty writing this review. But waitstaff clomped through like sleep walking. Just an all around aweful experience. DEFINITELY last time we will come. We'll just cherish the memories we have from when this was a wonderful establishment and consider that business dead and gone. May Chestnut Tree Rest in Peace. Found this place quite by accident but so happy I did. I was mostly meandering around the downtown square looking for photo opportunities. Started with the Sweet Bee green tea (hot) and then added the Veggie Eggs benedict. Both were excellent. Will definitely come back with my wife and try the french toast. Food is great but the best part is the exceptional hospitality of the owner and her staff. They are just tremendous. I travel 5x a week and have grown accustomed to travel industry hospitality that can often seem forced. But everyone I met at Chestnut Tree exudes genuine hospitality and friendliness, and very willing to share insider tips of the area's music, food, and entertainment hotspots. The bread was too big and there was juice everywhere (very messy sandwich). Not what I expected so maybe the menu should explain the entrees better? Excellent, friendly service, along with a great variety of menu choices. I chose the salmon lox dill Benedict and it did not disappoint. They also specialize in a large selection of hot and iced teas - I chose the iced mango-passion fruit tea, which was amazing.
