I've been to Chevy's on the River several times, and the location is one of the main reasons I keep coming back. Our server was friendly, attentive, and kept our drinks refilled throughout the meal. We ordered the Fresh Mex Sampler, chicken fajitas, and the skirt steak with shrimp. The sampler was perfect for sharing, and the chicken fajitas were pretty spicy. The skirt steak was cooked perfectly. Tender, juicy, and full of flavor. The shrimp was also very good. The rice looked a little dry and the portion was on the smaller side but the vegetables were flavorful and well prepared. We were celebrating a birthday so after ordering dessert the staff came over and sang Happy Birthday which was a nice touch. Just a heads up they no longer do the sombrero tradition. Overall the food was satisfying, the service was great, and the riverfront setting makes this one of my favorite Chevy's locations. I would definitely recommend it. read more

Well let me start by saying our server was amazing, she greeted us with a friendly welcoming smile, very attentive to our needs and excellent customer service, she didn't miss a beat!! The food came out pretty fast and it was sizzling hot! Everything was really delicious and inviting! Now for the negative, the sizzling platter had so many jalepeno's, it was too spicy! I ate mine but my family member had noticed the how spicy it was! We tried to make the best of it anyways! Our server came with the check and we just let her know and she said it's only supposed to have bell peppers! I showed her all the jalepeno's in the dish and she was very surprised! She immediately had the mgr come by who checked on us and he said he was sorry for the mix up and said he'd take that off our bill. Hadn't been to this location in years but when I went to use their restrooms, they were unsanitary! The toilet was filthy dirty , there was spit dripping down on the bathroom stall wall next to the toilet! It was a bad sign! I was worried because I had just eaten food from their kitchen and by the looks of their bathroom, doesn't look like they keep up on regular maintenance!! Yikes!!! read more

I hate writing negative reviews, but after several disappointing visits, I feel like I need to be honest about my experience. I remember when Chevy's on the River was one of my favorite places to eat. The location is still absolutely beautiful, but unfortunately the food and service have gone downhill every time I've visited recently. Today's visit was the final straw for me. The food that was served should have been fresh and crisp, but instead it arrived soggy and disappointing. Some of the ingredients appeared overcooked, burnt, or wilted, and the presentation left a lot to be desired. Another item we ordered had a surprisingly small portion and was missing ingredients that we expected to be included. The food overall was mediocre at best. Honestly, I've made similar items at home that turned out far better than what was served. The service didn't help matters. Our waitress took our drink order, came back for our food order, and then basically disappeared. We never saw her again until it was time to bring the check. When our food was delivered by someone else, we asked for additional napkins and were told to ask our server, which would have been fine if we had actually seen our server again. What makes this so disappointing is that the restaurant sits in such an amazing location on the river. I can overlook an occasional bad meal or an off day because everyone has them. A busy night happens. A mistake in the kitchen happens. But when the same problems keep happening over multiple visits, it starts to feel like a pattern rather than a one-time issue. I truly wanted this visit to be different because I have a lot of good memories of this place. Unfortunately, based on my recent experiences, I can't recommend it. I'm a huge chevy's fan and sad there aren't very many locations. I was craving a margarita and their salsa and fajitas so took my whole family for them to try it for the first time and just feel very disappointed. It all wasn't as I remembered it and even though I tried to ignore other people's comments, it was definitely coming to life when the service was incredibly bad. There was even a moment where the electricity went out because of the wind outside and they did not come and explain what was happening. They made everyone wait and said that we just couldn't pay but we had to get to a movie so we had to track down the waiter many times to pay for the meal. The meal itself was very underwhelming. The margarita had no whipped cream on it, and it came in a very cheap plastic cup. The fajitas were very overcooked and tough, and there was no corn cake on the side and when I asked the server about it he said it doesn't come with it, even though I had to insist that it did. I'm sad because I really want to like the place and I remember going one or two years ago and liking it. But they need to do a better job with the quality of their food and service. read more

This was my first time visiting this Chevy's to redeem my birthday meal. I loved that it was scenic and on the river. I ended up getting one of the custom entrees that allowed you to choose a taco, enchilada etc The service seemed a bit slow, even though there were seemingly available seats. We were waiting over 30 minutes to be seated on a Monday. They also didn't bring out their usual dessert/singing either. This restaurant could greatly benefit from the services of a gigantic power washer. The cutlery and glasses were dirty and stained. The menus were grimy, and at least two were stuck together with salsa. The whole building, including restrooms, seemed old, grimy, and tired. The food was meh, especially for the price. Actually, not even meh. Service was OK. We had a large party, so I guess it is expected that one person would not get their drink or their food when all the others did. The 20% gratuity is normal for large parties, but why was there an additional service charge? The food on my and my friend's plates had the skin of age on top. His tamale tasted frozen. My (cold) enchiladas were tasteless. The tostadas looked as if they had been sitting out too long. First of all, wow. The location could not be better. It's very unique in that it almost has a Louisiana bayou/ Xochimilco vibe going on. The river views are absolutely fantastic and could not be in a better place. The only downside is that the parking lot is small and cramped but you should be able to find a spot. Angelita gave amazing service. Her friendliness was so memorable I made sure to get her name. Our food came out rather quickly for a party of our size. The flavor of Chevy's is as close to authentic as you can get. It's a chain so the difference in flavors is going to be minimal. Just say no. Seriously! For those that read my reviews, you know I'm not a fan of most chain restaurants, we decided to give Chevys a chance. I haven't been to this restaurant or location in years, so this is definitely the perfect opportunity I called ahead to see if they were busy, and to ensure that we would be able to be seated inside because it's still pretty cold in Sacramento. We were greeted by a confused host, who seated us at a dirty table. Before we actually sat down, we asked if we could have the table cleaned or be seated elsewhere. He ended up moving us to another table that was clean, but questionable. I'd asked about happy hour because it looks like this is one of the few places that has an extended happy hour menu which is always exciting for me We decided to forgo happy hour and just order our meals. They brought chips and salsa to the table. The salsa was incredibly bitter and watery and words cannot describe how bad it really was. The chips were stale, so it made for great combo ( insert major sarcasm) We had to ask for cutlery and napkins because none were placed on the table, as well as asking for water for the same reason. So far, Customer Service has been mediocre. We ordered the "steak "and the large three enchilada platter I will preface this by saying I'm not sure which one was worse. The steak: this has to be without a doubt, the worst piece of me that I've ever seen served at a restaurant. I don't even know what kind of beef this possibly could have been, but definitely was not one that should've been served. Don't let the looks for you. There is no seasoning on it, it tasted like shoe leather, and it made me seriously sad to have to try to eat it. The black beans tasted like someone opened a can and threw them on the plate. Just gross. I always look at rice as one of those indestructible foods. How does anybody really ruin rice?!? Well if you want to find out, this is a place to find out at. The enchiladas: it came with a chili relleno. I was really looking forward to trying this. Like Rice, how does anybody really mess this up. It's supposed to be cheesy and yummy and it was none of that. The actual chili that was used was still hard, I don't know what kind of batter they used, but this was like a floofy egg. It was thick, mushy, and just gross. There wasn't much cheese, and what was stuffed into the chili. I don't even know what that was. Yes, there's cheese or something that was very plastic. He tasting on top. But that's where it was on top. The enchiladas... I don't even know where to begin with us. They were completely inedible. The meat was absolutely horrible. The chicken, I don't even know what to say about it, because the sauce is over the enchiladas tasted like burnt tin. Are the pictures pretty of the food? Sure. But I'm telling you there's horrible things happening on these plates. Same rice and same beans and same bad experience. Overall, this is definitely been one of the worst meals that I've had at what should be a reputable restaurant. The one thing about chain restaurants, is that they're supposed to be consistency. This was my first time trying Sunday brunch at Chevy's on the River and I absolutely loved it! My sister and friends brought me to celebrate my birthday and it was such a great experience. We waited about 10 minutes for an outdoor table, but it was way too hot, so we asked to sit inside. They kindly put us back on the list, and after another 10 minutes we were seated around 1:45pm just in time to enjoy the all-you-can-eat buffet before brunch ended at 2pm. It was packed, with people waiting and enjoying themselves everywhere; inside, outside, even at the bar. Definitely recommend making a reservation if you plan to go! The food was fantastic. I had a made-to-order omelet from the omelet station and it was the cook's first day, but he nailed it! Delicious. I also tried the shrimp tacos from the taco bar, which were amazing. There were plenty of options, from Mexican favorites like enchiladas to desserts and more. For about $40 per person, it was well worth it. It's been a minute since I've been here. This place has cool vibes because it's on the river. So you get a meal with a view. Bringing my family here is a different experience than coming with my co-workers and friends. We came for a late lunch or rather an early dinner. The day was hot for a late summer day almost at the end of this Indian summer (i.e. hot late in the season) so we opted to sit inside when usually we'd sit outside and enjoy looking at the river while we eat, but it was entirely too hot this day. We ordered a Super Cinco for my wife, and I had the beef birria tacos off the HH menu. We also ordered the Spicy BBQ quesadilla from the HH menu and the fajita from the kids menu. My beef birria tacos. The meat was really good and the fried soft taco shells were so scrumptious. Overall, service was pretty fast and the food was good. We've not been here in many years or in any Chevys in quite awhile so it's good to know their fresh mex food is still solid. Little Lucie was with us for happy hour so we walked around the side to the outdoor seating area. There was a open door with a staff station there where I asked the male manager if we could be seated. He looked at us and said we have to enter through the front door to be seated. The front door and host station was about 20 feet in clear view from where we standing. His directions didn't make any sense so I asked again and he repeated himself. To make matters worse, all we got while waiting were THREE tiny portions of chips -- that's it. No refills, no updates on our food, nothing to make up for the ridiculous delay. And when the food finally showed up, it was beyond disappointing. It was barely even warm. I ordered a torta with steak, and I got TWO tiny pieces of steak with unmelted cheese. Unmelted. Cheese. How does that even happen?? The portions overall were ridiculously small, like they didn't even try. Speaking of prices... everything is insanely expensive for what you actually get. I'm paying premium prices for what feels like scraps and poor service. The quality doesn't match the cost at all -- it honestly felt like a complete rip-off. And the ambiance? I was just recently at this restaurant and I ordered something that had crab in it. I1 was eating it, I noticed there was a potato in it. I called over the waitress and asked her she said no there's no potato in there. It's crab so l proceeded to open up the item I was eating and it was full of potatoes the crab flavor was from probably a crab bisque or crab seasoning. There was zero crab in my food that I had purchased the waitress, then proceeded to be rude, when I questioned her about it, she said no there is crab in there. I proceeded to show her there wasn't she got even more rude. It was hot in there. There was no AC on at all. Now if you're offering something that has crab in it and you don't have crab, please specify that to the customers that come, so anybody that's ordering anything with seafood in it check your food. We decided to take the family out to Chevy's on the River because my sister was in town, and as parents of young kids, we don't get out much. It was a beautiful evening with perfect weather by the river so we figured this would be a nice treat. Unfortunately, the nightmare began the moment we walked through the door. I had called earlier in the afternoon to make a reservation for 5:45 PM. We showed up on time, around 5:40, and I let the hostess know we had arrived. She said, "It'll be just a few minutes," then immediately changed it to "about 10 or 15 minutes." No problem, we waited outside. After 15 minutes passed, I went back in to check. She said it would be another 5 minutes and asked if we needed a kids' menu. I said yes, we have a toddler. She said she'd bring one. Another 15 minutes go by, still nothing. I go back in, and finally, after a 35-minute wait with a reservation, we're seated. What's the point of making a reservation if you're going to wait that long anyway? It gets worse. We were finally seated outside by the water, great setting, nice breeze. Our server introduced herself and brought chips and salsa. We all just ordered waters. (We never got a single refill, by the way, the entire night.) We were ready to order quickly, but she didn't come back for another 10 to 15 minutes. We placed our food orders: I ordered the combo with steak, chicken, carnitas, shrimp, and veggies. My wife got chicken tacos, refried beans, and Spanish rice. My sister ordered chicken flautas. My son got pizza and fries. It took about 30 minutes for the food to come out, and then unbelievably, our son's food didn't come out for another 20 minutes after that. We all sat there awkwardly, refusing to eat while our 3.5-year-old watched us. By the time we finally all had food in front of us, everything was cold. His pizza looked unappetizing, and my steak, ordered medium rare, was cooked almost well done. Our server was trying her best, but they were clearly severely understaffed. She kept saying things were "coming right out," but they weren't. Eventually, a cook, not the server, brought out the pizza and said, "Talk to your server, I didn't even know you guys ordered a pizza." I said wow. The manager finally came over, apologized, comped our meal, and offered dessert, but by then the experience was ruined. We just wanted to leave. The worst part? I've actually had decent experiences here before. But after tonight, I won't be coming back. Unless this location goes through a serious overhaul, I don't see it surviving much longer. You're wondering why I would give a Chevy's 5 star as the food is consistently the same. The views, the service and overall vibes... Company may also be a contributor. The Chevy's near our place in San Jose closed a few years back and I miss their fajita combo platter and was so happy to come visit friends and family in Sacramento and get what I've missed at a waterfront setting. Will admit they seemed a little understaffed, but appreciated that the staff were hustling to meet everybody's needs with a smile. In my opinion the service, food and views earned it a five star. Visited Chevy's for a company work party, and honestly, it was a mixed bag. They sat us upstairs in a really nice space with plenty of room to accommodate a large group, which was great. When it came to taking orders, the service was pretty good. That said, it took a while for drinks to come out, and we didn't get chips right away even though we were already seated. For a big group party, I kind of expected chips and salsa to already be on the tables, but maybe that's just my expectation. Where things really went downhill was the buffet setup. More than half of the plates they brought out were dirty. One after another, plate after plate was visibly dirty. I let the manager or lead staff member know, and what he did next was honestly shocking. He took one of the dirty plates and tried to wipe it off with a rag. We immediately said we were not using a plate wiped down with a rag. We have no idea where that rag had been, and it felt really unsanitary. We waited for new plates, but when they came out, many of those were still dirty. It was unbelievable. Eventually, another server brought out plates that were actually clean, but they were soaking wet and hadn't been dried at all. I had to grab napkins and dry my own plate before putting food on it. That whole situation was really strange and frustrating. Ironically, the food itself was the highlight. I wouldn't normally expect Chevy's catering to be that good, but the corn masa was solid. The carne asada and chicken were both good, and the beans and rice were also well done. Food-wise, I'd honestly give it a five out of five. Drinks were a different story. I ordered a mango margarita, and it tasted like straight mango with zero alcohol. I ended up ordering an extra shot just to get any alcohol flavor at all, which was disappointing. We had reserved the space for a three-hour block, but about an hour and some change in, they started cleaning up our tables. Chips and salsa were taken away, and servers kept grabbing plates, which was especially annoying considering how many dirty plates we had already dealt with. It made us feel rushed and unwelcome. Overall, Chevy's could have done a much better job handling service for a company party. Went here today, food was good, but the service was horrible. We had a reservation and were asked if we preferred inside or outside seating. We chose outside and waited 30 minutes. I went back inside to check in with the host and they said, "Oh yeah, your table is actually ready." They also didn't have enough high chair, and we have a 20-month-old, so we ended up moving inside and sitting in a booth. Our server (a guy) took our order and brought complimentary chips and salsa twice. When the food came, a different staff member from the kitchen delivered it but forgot the tortillas. She said she'd come back, didn't even ask if we wanted flour or corn--and completely forgot about it. Meanwhile, our server seemed busy, he passed by our table three times without checking on us, and it took forever to get drink refills. We literally had to stop him and ask if the fajitas came with tortillas, he said yes and ended up bringing them himself. Food is 8/10, but service is 2/10. We were really excited because it's by the river, but the vibe just didn't match at all. We also ordered shrimp/crab omelette, steak, chilaquiles. churro pancakes, and pineapple upside down cake. Omelette; shrimp tasted "previously frozen", it was okay. Steak; ordered medium rare, it was perfectly cooked and tender. Perfect combo with the fresh cooked flour tortillas. Chilaquiles: Not bad! will order a side of sour cream next time. Churro pancakes; not too sweet, just right and when you find that little bit of crunchy pancake it's amaaazing. Pineapple upside down cake; kahlua cream sauce was a nice touch, a little too sweet for me but if you love sweeeet, it's for you. Glad to see they have affordable options/specials. I stopped coming to Chevys for a while because of poor service, but today was different. I was promptly seated upon arrival in a booth as requested. I have been craving guacamole so I ordered the table side guacamole prepared by my waiter Alex and it was worth the wait. Prepared just right, and eaten with their light and crisp chips. The chips were lightly salted and perfect with the guacamole. For my lunch I chose the crab and shrimp enchiladas with black beans and rice. So so delicious! They had Small booths but plenty of tables for bigger groups. And you get a sombrero for the birthday so that's fun. Our waitress was very good, she was quick to fix any problems we had and answer our questions. As we had a lot about the menu. The chips and salsa were just fine. Stopped by Chevy's on the River to enjoy some food and drinks, and it was honestly the perfect evening to sit outside on their patio. The weather was beautiful, nice breeze, not too hot, and it was relaxing to watch the boats go by on the Sacramento River. The patio is well lit and has a great vibe for hanging out. We ordered the fajita nachos along with the queso dip and chips. Both came out nice and hot, and definitely hit the spot. Service was just okay. Our waiter only checked on us a couple of times, and we actually had more interaction with the runner who brought out our food. Not the worst, but could've been more attentive. One thing that threw me off was noticing a surcharge on our receipt. When I asked the waiter what it was for, he didn't seem to know. Not sure if it's something they charge everyone, or if it's tied to being a riverside location. Either way, it'd be nice if Chevy's was more upfront about it, although it's a small charge, but most people want to know what they're paying for. A heads-up on the menu or from the server would've helped. Overall, it's a solid spot mainly for the outdoor atmosphere and views & of course for their happy hour at the bar. read more

HUGE shout out to our server- Caroline!! It was extremely busy but she was attentive and bubbly. We had reservations outside but didn't realize how windy it could be. A majority of us were prepared with jackets. I had asked a manager (presumed) if we can have one over near table but he said they didn't have any propane left. 10 minutes later, Caroline brings one over without question and stated she just took one from a near by group of tables no one was sitting at and that just made our entire experience 10 times better even after making accommodations in moving up our reservations for my moms birthday! I chose to celebrate me and my friend's birthday here for brunch. I called on a Wednesday and spoke to the manager and made reservations for 14 of us in the Cantina. Fast forward, Saturday. One of our friends arrived early he told me they had our table in the back of the restaurant and not in the Cantina. I asked if he could ask the hostess to move us to the cantina because that's where I had specifically asked the manager to put us. When we arrived, our group was divided up and not at the same table. I asked the hostess about moving back since we were separated. She fricking rolls her eyes and gives me attitude. I apologized to her, which I shouldn't have since it was their mistake and she didn't need to act that way. She was so rude that a server had to step in and apologize on her behalf and asked our party if we could just stay where we were at? It didn't really make sense because none of us had ordered anything and it would've just been a simple thing to do? I hardly give an establishment 1 star but if you call a place make reservations and it wasn't what you asked for? The manager was MIA? Hostess with attitude like she just walked off the street? We came in for a late lunch (1:30 pm on Saturday) and Chevys took care of our party of 7 promptly. We had no wait for a table. I do wish the patio had heaters as it would have been nice ti get a clear view of the river. Our food was good and came out at about the same time for all 7 of us. The salsa and chips were outstanding...maybe too good because I did not feel a need to order the tableside guacamole!! Interestingly, the coffee was AMAZING. Clearly it was freshly made for the first cup and tgen refills. Overall, our tab came to just under $190 including the house added 20% tip. That is a very hard to beat cost these days. BTW, had I had the option for a 22-25% tip, I would have left that rather than the 20% the house added...our waiter was that good. read more

CHEVYSSSS ON THE RIVER!! Came here a little randomly on a Sunday, to find out they're doing a brunch buffet along with BOTTOMLESS mimosas!! 100000% WORTH! The food was all hot and fresh. There was an omelette bar, fresh tortillas, taco & fajita bar. Customer service was welcoming and friendly. They make you feel at home. The ambiance is warm and welcoming & once you taste the food you know you've found a good spot! Special mentions to Omar & Brianna. Omar was very friendly, nice and attentive to our drinks. Brianna was warm, friendly and made me the best omelet while making sure I would be comfortable with the spice level of my omelet! I would highly recommend visiting!! We visited on Saturday afternoon. The chips, salsa and Guacamole were good. The tortillas were burnt and dry. The food here was disgusting. I ordered the steak & shrimp plate. I ordered the steak medium-rare; it arrived medium-well. The steak was tough and tasted freezer burnt. The shrimp was overcooked and rubbery. I did not eat anything further and asked the server to remove the plate . The rice was terrible. This is not the type of rice used for Spanish rice. The enchiladas tasted basic. I do not know how people support this type of food. This is cafeteria food. We will never return to this place when visiting Sacramento. ELIC FAILURE. read more

Stopped in for a quick lunch today. I have been here quite a few times but always forget to take pictures before diving into the food. We had the tostada salad and the table side fajita salad. I love how fresh the salad is and it is prepared table side. Super fresh and flavor is great. Service was quick and super friendly. We were seated right away at an outside table.
