I really loved the vibe at Northern Roots Coffeehouse! The atmosphere was super nice and cozy, and it honestly felt like such a fun brunch spot to hang out in. The sweet potato pancakes were really good, and the steak and eggs surprised me because the steak portion was huge and cooked really well. The avocado toast was also delicious, and even something simple like the eggs and cheese tasted amazing -- they really know how to make good scrambled eggs there. I also thought it was really cool that they had a little French market section where you can shop for French products while you're there. Most of the mimosas were really good too, and on Sundays they're only $5, which was a nice bonus. The wait time was definitely long -- over an hour and a half -- but honestly, the food and overall experience made it feel worth it in the end! read more

My second time at Chez Genesis and it was even better this visit. The space is beautiful. They have the healthiest plants all throughout the restaurant. Everything is clean and intentionally places, it almost feels like dining in someone's really nice sunroom. The service was great. Molly took care of us and she was helpful, quick and efficient. Would definitely look for her again on my next visit. The food. First of all I underestimated the portions. The Red Potato Hash is enormous. Really great flavor but I barely made it halfway through the bowl. I also ordered the lemon ricotta pancakes. They're probably my favorite thing on the menu. Taste, texture, consistency, all perfect. Tried their crepes for the first time and loved it as well. As someone who drinks coffee daily, they make really good lattes. The salted honey was that perfect balance of sweet and salty without being too much of either. This is the perfect breakfast/brunch restaurant. They're consistent, personable and efficient. This was my second visit to Chez Genese and it did not disappoint. The staff were very friendly and helpful - even moving me to the window seat with more space! I ordered the chicken biscuit with a mimosa ($5 on Sunday) and it was filling and delicious. On my first visit I didn't notice the little market space they have but it is tucked back with lots of little goodies to purchase. I was comfortable sitting and reading while enjoying my meal. OMG. Yes! What a wonderful place with delightful breakfast and brunch plates. To kick things off, the service is outstanding. Jean Pierre (JP) was great and on top of everything. He was willing to answer questions and was on the ball with making sure everything was smooth. Inside, it certainly takes me from Greensboro to breakfast in a French cafe. Absolutely wonderful. I recommend a breakfast crêpe like the one made with ham, potato, Emmental and rosemary. It was rich in flavor from the Emmental and the rosemary added depth to every bite. The crêpe comes with an egg made to order. I had mine done over medium and it was perfection. I loved the side of fruit that came with it. A beautiful presentation. The drip coffee is also a quality cup. I'll certainly be back to try the quiche du jour, lemon ricotta pancakes and their sandwiches. Second time eating at Chez Genese and we were not disappointed. We arrived at 1130 am and waited about 30 minutes for a table. The wait time was not really surprising since it was a pretty day and prime time for Saturday brunch downtown. Once we sat down we were almost immediately greeted and our friendly server took our orders. My husband ordered the Shashuka. Absolutely delicious. Tomato, & red pepper sauce, poached, egg, and chevre topped with basil and served with a large piece of mulitgrain toast. The eggs were a tiny over but it arrived very hot in a cast iron skillet. Again, still delicious. Ate every last bite. I ordered the eggs en cocotte with bacon and, caramelized onions with emmental. My dish came with a lovely side of fruit (slices of orange, grapefruit, strawberry, green apples, and blueberries). I also ordered the yummy rosemary potatoes to somewhat share with my husband. My cocotte was so decadent. I wanted to drink the heavy cream sauce directly from the ramekin. Thankfully, the dish is served with a sizable, toasted, buttered baguette. I soaked up the rest of the cream sauce with my bread and threw a few potatoes in there to get the rest. I appreciated the portions. Nothing more annoying than a tiny piece of bread or paying $20 for a dish and leaving hungry. I would have eaten a whole loaf of bread if they brought it to me. The restaurant is open, airy, and bright. Every corner and wall is filled with houseplants. Which is pretty cool because I am a certified plant killer. Expect a wait for your food. We were there for almost 2 hours with the wait for a table and then about 45 minutes for our food for 4. The cocottes do take time to cook but so worth the wait. I would have been a little cranky if I was starving or if I had somewhere else to be. The food was fantastic. Well worth the wait, in my opinion. The staff was friendly and our drinks stayed filled. I appreciated the check backs when food was taking a while. Once we stood up, they were already bussing our table for the next patrons. Eveyone was hustling. Get the eggs en cocotte. My drink was served 10 minutes before my husband's. My food again was served well before his. Neither the drinks or the food were harder to make than the other. Just bad timing. Latte was amazing - they have homemade syrup and I would even recommend coming here just for coffee The food was good but not phenomenal in my opinion. I think I had really high expectations because I had heard such great things. I had the Ham, potato, emmental & rosemary omelette. It came with a large bagguette and a very nice fruit plate (had strawberries, blueberries, orange; not just your typical melons) it was good overall but again nothing out of this world. I would go back and recommend but wouldn't necessarily be a "go to" spot for me. We went on a Sunday morning and had a 20 min wait to get a table which was fine but then we waited for our food for over 45 mins after ordering which I thought was far too long. After a disappointing lunch across town, I headed here for a dessert. Guess I was swayed by their high ratings on Yelp. The place seemed quite popular too...as I had to wait more than 20 minutes for a table. First of all, the place is very quaint...a bit short from being nice as too many tables were squeezed together. Also, there was no atmospheric music (AKA overhead music)...and I feel that should be a given for a restaurant-cafe like this. So I was not impressed with the decor or the ambiance. However I expected more from their foods (given the high ratings). Again, I waited at least 20 minutes for a table. Then, I somewhat resented that they seated me at a large table with other people (with other Asians, as it turned out...as in WTF?!?)...when there was an unbussed table available. I asked to be moved...then waited for them to clean off the table (which took much longer than it needed to be). Anyway, I ordered their pricey Blueberry Crepe, and this Vanilla Bean Green Tea. Well, I can't sugar coat it...but both were disappointing. The crepe just didn't taste good...it was kinda tasteless. Even this Vanilla Creme Fraiche was tasteless. I appreciated the generous dose of Blueberries though. As much as I love crepes, I just didn't love their version. The tea wasn't that great tasting either. Presentation with the tea sack was weird too...kinda tacky? (see pic) I really hate starting this new year with all these low ratings, but I'm just stating my personal opinions and experience. Honestly the name is what drew me to trying out Chez Genèse, and some amazing reviews from friends! Chez Genèse did not dissapoint! Firstly there are no reservations, it's first come first serve! We went on a Sunday around 10:30 there was a 45 minute wait. Completely worth it by the way. We were hungry so we got a lotttt of food to try. I got their avocado toast, a paloma to drink, smoked salmon on toast, a strawberry/Nutella crepes and their potato soup as well as well as french toast. Everything was amazing. Delicately seasoned, cooked to perfection. Our waiter recommended a lot of the food we tried and knocked it out the park. It's super clean on the inside, very minimalistic, and the service was top notch. I definitely recommend giving this place a try, and I will definitely be back! read more

I checked out of my hotel and wanted to grab a delicious lunch before a long drive back to Charleston. It was beautiful out so I walked down Elm St and stopped at a couple shops along the way. I didn't realize they closed at 2pm, but I got there around 1pm so it was fine and it seemed I escaped the lunch rush. I sat down at a table, ordered a café au lait, and looked over the menu. Everything sounded great, but I really wanted to try one of the cocotte's. Mine had bacon, caramelized onion, and emmental cheese and was served with a side of fresh fruit salad and a crusty baguette for dipping. I started by breaking open one of the yolks and tearing off pieces of bread to dip. It was so savory and creamy that I couldn't get enough of it. So much so that I asked for additional bread so I made sure not to miss a drop. The fruit salad was the perfect pairing and was beautifully arranged. At first glance I felt the prices were slightly higher, but after reading that they don't accept tips because they pay a living wage, I actually felt like it was very fair. I would have paid more with tip on my total. Everything was so good that I thought about getting something from the case to go, but I was so full I couldn't fathom buying more food. If you're in Greensboro, this should absolutely be on your list for places to eat. read more

Decided to try a new place in downtown Greensboro with a friend from Durham and was pleasantly surprised! We got lunch on Saturday around 12:15 and it was busy but not too busy. The waitress was friendly, and efficient. Our food came in a timely manner. The food wasn't bad but it wasn't anything to phone home about. It didn't stand out. I will note that it was very interesting that they don't have an option to tip when paying by card! It seems as if the pricing kind of includes the tip which I liked. This place does not accept tips - it's on signs and the menu (albeit the service, to me, certainly warrants a hefty tip!). We ordered the quiche - which was astounding! Chez Genese is my definition of what I want to go to when I say "brunch"! We stopped by Greensboro for a nice brunch during a road trip and stumbled across this cute place. The parking is street parking so be prepared to parallel park. When you walk inside the first thing I noticed was all the plants! And to my surprise, they were all real! This restaurant gives off farm vibes but eclectic. It was a Friday morning and we were seated right away without reservations, but it did fill up pretty quickly. The waitresses were super sweet and helpful with the menu. There were some specials not listed in the menu that they have on their board when you're there. I only got to try the smoked salmon sandwich which was DELICIOUS if that's your kind of dish. The toast was toasted a little more than my preference but didn't take away from the flavor profile. It was super refreshing and I wish I got the entire sandwich rather than just half. I also got to try their iced latte with hazelnut flavoring. The coffee was pretty sweet but I like my coffee sweet so it was absolutely perfect for me. If you like your coffee less sweet and more bitter I would probably not add the flavorings. The specialty coffees are not bottomless however the regular drip coffee is. The macaron was perfectly made as well. The flavor was a little bland in my opinion however the structure was great! My friends said the lemon-ricotta pancakes were fluffy and filling and the quiche was super savory. Utensils were dirty, there was a massive fly buzzing around the restaurant, space was so tight that you couldn't really move much, and to top it off, the eggs benedict with hollandaise sauce that I ordered was horrible. I've eaten hollandaise sauce from several restaurants in different countries, and NEVER in my life have I tasted hollandaise sauce this sour. It wasn't even slightly tangy, as it was supposed to be- it was outright SOUR. As if a cup of vinegar was poured in it! I was so frustrated, I didn't even know if I should send it back and have it redone. Food was just horrible. Driving home from South Carolina to Virginia this morning, we asked Google Maps to recommend breakfast stops along our route. Among the listings for fast food, chain restaurants, and truck stops was one called Chez Genèse. We were intrigued and decided to venture into the outskirts of Greensboro to give it a shot. Wow, what a great decision that was. It's obviously a popular spot with the locals because there was a good crowd, even considering it being Columbus Day. They asked if we minded sitting at the community table, which we were fine with. We wound up having the table to ourselves for the full meal, anyway. The advantage (disadvantage?) of this table was that we were immediately adjacent to the pastry case and had an excellent view of all the goodies on offer there within. After staring at a particular scone for ten minutes after placing our breakfast order, I couldn't take it any longer and asked our server to step back over to amend our order. My husband took the opportunity to ask for an apple tart. The cranberry scone was really good, but the apple tart, made in the French style, set the tone for the excellent food that would follow. For our mains, my husband had a full order of avocado toast. This was plated on a cutting board and butcher paper, onto which the base of multigrain toast was set into a generous amount of fresh honey. This was topped with a solid layer of what had to be several avocados. Two perfect over-easy eggs topped it off. I had something called a multigrain bowl. This was layers of greek yogurt, nut butter, fresh fruit, and something called apricot paste. It also had toasted oats, chia seeds, and a drizzle of honey. I added a few scrambled eggs and a chicken apple sausage link to make it a fit meal for a carnivore. The ingredients in the multigrain bowl worked really well together. The true star of the dish was certainly the apricot paste. A little went a long way, and there was no question when I got a spoon that had happened across a layer of it. Yum! The eggs, simple as they were, were also quite delicious. Perfectly fluffy. All-in-all, it was an excellent experience. If you're doing the long trek down I-85 and you're looking for a delightful brunch, the extra ten-minute detour off the interstate is well worth the reward. read more

1st thank you fellow yelpers I was traveling from Florida and searching for a nice restaurant and Wow this is a really special place! Amazing food and atmosphere. I went for breakfast on a weekend and it was busy, but the wait time was not long maybe 15 minutes ( in hindsight I would wait as long as it takes). 1st thought while waiting was looking at all the smiles on customers and staff, everyone looked relaxed and happy. So the menus are amazing but weekend has a couple of additions, I ordered the Chef's savory Dutch baby which had goat cheese and smoked salmon and was delicious, I also ordered a side lemon ricotta pancake, also delicious. I ordered a couple of items to go for friends down in Asheboro, an heirloom tomato tart that was amazing and a pavlova because why not, it's not often I'm near a pavlova It was heavenly! This restaurant was so wonderful I told hubby I've got to go back soon to explore the city... an excuse to get back to Chez Genèse asap. There wasn't a wait at the time so we were seated and brought menus fairly quickly. The inside is cozy and chic. I've never experienced French style breakfast/brunch so the servers were helpful in providing suggestions. They also mentioned a majority of the dishes take in excess of thirty minutes to prepare. *Take note of this if you're in a rush* We opted to share a few dishes. We got the Avocado Toast, Lemon Ricotta Pancakes and the Salmon Benedict. My oh my were they all delicious! I will say the pancakes were a pleasant surprise as I wasn't sure what to expect. I've been hearing about Chez Genèse and finally had the time to check it out this morning. Everyone was so friendly, the restaurant itself is super cute, and it took less than five minutes for me to get a table. (Saturdays always look super packed, but that's to be expected when a place is as good as this.) The bacon was fresh and crispy. The lemon ricotta pancake was unreal. I don't know how they managed to get the consistency of a pancake creamy and fluffy at the same time but they did and there are zero notes for it. I don't even care about pancakes but heard everyone raving about it and gave it a shot. No regrets.
