Just some cool people that I met that are also local! Haha

OK, so I'm a little embarrassed to admit this, but I've been living in Santa Monica for about six years and always walked past this bar. I finally went in for the first time a few months ago, and now I've already been back a handful of times. This place attracts the best people from all over the world. I love the dark, dim, moody atmosphere at night and even during the day inside. I've only interacted with a few staff members so far, but every single one has been enthusiastic, sweet, charming, and genuinely nice. You can enjoy an unlimited amount of peanuts, and whether you're a local or just visiting, you'll almost always meet someone from somewhere in the world you've never been before. The vibes are really that good. I also learned this place has a ton of history, which made me appreciate it even more. Definitely adding Chez Jay to my regular rotation, especially since I live in the neighborhood. Straight 10s across the board!

A wonderful nostalgic spot still going strong in Santa Monica. The vibe was a cool and fun as ever! The food was great! Our service was warm and attentive. A must try when you need a fun night out near the beach!

We are big fans of the tv show Goliath, thus we had to stop at the bar were the main character, actor Billy Bob Thornton gets drunk on a regular basis across from his motel stay that he made a permanent residence at. Unfortunately on Sunday, the bar doesn't open till 2pm, thus we grabbed a drink at the Backyard which is a nice relax place to chill by the beach. A place so close to Santa Monica that the everyday tourist doesn't know brunch exists. We just stopped in for drinks. A wide selection of cocktails and beer is offer. I got the hotel California and it was solid. Seating consists of a small bar. Picnic tables for larger groups. As well as couch seating around fireplace. Need to come again when I can get into official bar.

I love Chez Jay for the historical dive bar vibe. Plus the prices aren't too bad for LA. The bartender was super sweet and very talkative. He made some nice drinks and they weren't watered down... sometimes that can happen in a dive bar, lol. The bartender offered us shelled peanuts and told us to toss the shells on the floor. I love that, it gives a European /international feel. I've never eaten here so can't speak to the food but the drinks are strong!!

Great little gem in Santa Monica! Heike was wonderful helping us get our table for a friends birthday! Stuart was very attentive and the food came out really fast. The dishes were very tasty! Really fun vibe!!

Last Sunday afternoon had another pleasant lunch with cocktails at the backyard patio. Not crowded, just about at half capacity which is nice. We had Bloody Mary's, a Smashburger and a Crispy Chicken sandwich. Food and cocktails were good as usual and the service was great. After 20 or so years, we still recommend this place for its fun and casual atmosphere.

If we come in the day time, is a child allowed? Goofy question I know 😅

From what I understand it's more of an adult atmosphere and I believe they said 12 and up

? Is Wednesday a good day of the week time to go and how busy is it? I see it doesn't open until 2 PM. Does it fill up fast? I imagine weekends is pretty busy.

It won't be crowded during day. Such a cool find a must go

I know the restaurant does not allow dogs, but does the patio area allow dogs?

Yes the outside is dog friendly

Do they still have peanuts that you can shell and drop on the floor post Covid?

No they don't do that anymore

Are teens allowed to dine in with their folks?

Absolutely! We ate here with our teen in April. He loved it!

Do you need to make reservations for breakfast? Can you eat in the backyard?

They are not open for breakfast, dinner only

Are you open for drinks before 530pm?

yes

How much is corkage fee?

$18.00 per bottle

How can I get a hold of the manager if I left my credit card there?

email them: chezjays@chezjays.com

How is the new outside patio. Does it have heaters?

Yep! Lots of heaters and a fire pit. It's pretty cozy back there.

I'd like a sauce .. it's has flavorful toppings and something like chili oil on the plate .. wish chili oil was more of a sauce .. but still was very good .. texture was perfect tho .. a little crunchier than traditional tempura which was nice Ambiance was charming .. cute little place .. a must try

I believe everyone enjoyed their dishes, but docking a star as they overcooked the steak frites! We ordered it medium rare but it came to us medium-well done. It is always disappointing to get a steak more done than you requested. They had a seasonal banana foster dessert at the end that was delicious. Service was attentive and pleasant. Definitely a pricier place, but worth it to try the different dishes on the menu!

She truly went above and beyond to make my brother feel special and celebrated. She brought out little virgin piña colada flutes for us to toast his achievement, and she even surprised him with a complimentary dessert to mark the occasion. Leanne was incredibly welcoming and attentive throughout the entire meal, and it was so lovely that other staff members also took the time to check in on us and chat with my brother about his graduation. The food was just as amazing as the service. The tableside Caesar salad was a really cool experience, and our steaks were cooked perfectly--everything was seasoned and flavorful. We finished the night with the cookie dessert, which was absolutely incredible. The overall vibe was really relaxed. We sat outdoors so we had ocean views and the weather was perfect. They had heaters on in the evening. Indoors was pretty packed as we were leaving but the ambiance was great. The restaurant was buzzing with conversation and people were watching the game by the bar while eating dinner. Overall, it was an amazing experience from start to finish. Today, I got to join the fun and enjoy a lovely dinner at Massillia! Surprised the relatives for their 5:30 reservation. I was supposed to stay for just a drink, but I was having such a great time, I had to crash the entire dinner! 5:30 on a Friday night was the perfect time. It was chill and quiet. The restaurant itself is super relaxing and had a nice ambiance. To start, I asked the waitress to bring me a fruity cocktail and what she handed me was delicious. I totally forgot to snag the name, but it was refreshing and yummy. For food, my aunts ordered EVERYTHING! we are a vegetable loving family and definitely got lots of yum yum that reflected that: ratatouille, salad, mushrooms, calamari, mashed potatoes, broccoli, salmon flatbread, and so much more. Everything was so flavorful! I really enjoyed every dish we got! If I had to choose some absolute favorites it would be the salad and the ratatouille! Both were incredible ( along with everything else). Finished the meal off with the pear dessert and a glass of port. Yummy! Great meal with family! I'll happily be back in Massilia to have another lovely dinner.

Parking: Easy metered street parking or Santa Monica public parking garages have reasonable rates…read more Reservation: Easy to make online using Tock but walk-ins also doable Service: Really on top of it - menus provided right away, no long waits for food, friendly servers and hostess, my water was always refilled, and plates were taken away as soon as they were done Ambiance: The front is a nondescript black door right next to the Chevron along Wilshire and inside is a nice atmosphere with a Samurai in a display case, bar seating along the side, and dark minimalistic interior. Food: Really appreciate that there are plenty of non alcoholic and mocktail options since very few places have such a variety. The poppin' lychee with mint was delicious. Mentaiko udon - very light, subtle flavor; wish it had a stronger mentaiko presence though not too creamy which I liked Toro sushi taco - good amount of quality toro though wasabi is mixed inside which wasn't my preference Sunomono cucumber salad with wakame seaweed - not bad though even with the HH price, the portion was small and not worth it in my opinion Aburi shime saba - seared cured mackerel that was torched tableside was fun and the searing to order gave a freshly smoky flavor while the fish itself was cold so it had good contrast Sashimi mori - thick portioned cuts of good quality fish served on ice to keep cool and they're able to accommodate the amount to the number of people sharing; fish changes depending on availability but salmon, scallop, and yellowtail were good, wasn't crazy about the sweet soy sauce for the chutoro, sea bream not bad, bonito was smoky Kakuni pork belly taco - not overly heavy and really good flavors Corn ribs with shoyu butter - such a delicious glaze and crisp texture outside, super unique in flavor Hojicha creme brulee - really love hojicha and they infused it so well into the creme brulee with solid tea flavor that balanced really well so it wasn't too sweet Wagyu meatballs with onion soy reduction - personally love caramelized onions and they did such a good job getting the rich, sweet flavor out; it wasn't overwhelming since I broke down the meatball to soak up the sauce Edamame - sea salt and lime gave it good seasoning and portion was worth it for HH Honmaguro salmon - sashimi was good but pricey for the small portion Honmaguro bluefin tuna - sashimi was good but also pricey for the portion, though the cuts were thicker than the salmon so slightly preferable Poke taco - good amount of poke on a seaweed "tortilla" which was really worth it for HH Bluefin tuna nigiri set - good flavor and quality though toro chewier Premium nigiri set - absolute favorite from here though sadly was only a seasonal special; toro with caviar was amazing, sweet shrimp melted in my mouth with how tender it was and ikura was great, and the seared scallop was smoky with uni on top Negitoro with garlic bread - solid though prefer without cream and wasabi personally Karaage - super juicy and flavorful with dark meat used so it didn't need sauce Garlic shrimp - good with garlic chili crisp on top and great size Wagyu curry - good curry with a spicy kick that's not overpowering though the wagyu is ground beef so hard to distinguish the quality Dan dan noodles - prominent peanut flavor Omakase - Caesar's salad was great without cheese or heavy ranch and crisps on top for texture, seared cured mackerel always good, sashimi was thick cuts of sea bream, bonito, and bluefin tuna which were good, mussels and clams had great flavor from sauce, corn rib in shoyu butter and tempura battered shrimp with chili mayo was one of my favorite courses since the shoyu butter flavor and texture on the corn is so delicious and the shrimp was well cooked, the black cod was subtle in flavor and I was pleasantly surprised that it came with a sweet potato puree and roasted tomato as well as crispy skin and had that smokiness, wagyu meatball was great as usual, wagyu curry was super filling, miso soup great palate cleanser, and mango sticky rice sorbet was a bit too hard in texture for me personally and not enough mango Skip: mentaiko udon, sunomono cucumber salad with wakame seaweed, honmaguro salmon and bluefin tuna, dan dan noodles Would order again: HH edamame, HH poke taco, HH kakuni pork belly taco Must orders: hojicha creme brulee, aburi shime saba (seared cured mackerel), corn ribs, wagyu meatball (if you love caramelized onions), karaage I've been here four times now and have to say the $70 happy hour omakase (typically $80) was my favorite experience here so far although my favorite bites were from their seasonal special when the $20 nigiri premium set was offered. They have all day happy hour on Sundays and Mondays which is really nice to not worry about a cutoff and late night on Fridays and Saturdays from 9-10:30pm in addition to Tuesdays - Fridays 5-6:30pm and Saturdays 4-6pm. The omakase does end 30 min before happy hour does though!!

He was honestly the main reason we had such a lovely time, as his energy was great and he was constantly checking in on us and making sure we were satisfied with everything. To drink, we had the Yuzu Whiskey Sour and the Melrose Passionfruit Martini, both of which were refreshing, delicious, and paired well with our food selection. I also had a Raspberry Breeze mocktail, which was sweet, tart, and bubbly! To eat, we started with the Rock Shrimp, which had a great spicy flavor and crunch to it. We also tried the Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice, which I liked, but I think the price on this item is a little steep, and you might be better off ordering another roll or menu item. For rolls, we ordered the Crunchy, the Tiger, the Lemon, and the Killer. Of these, my favorite had to be the Killer, as it was super fresh and had a great kick to it. Chef Salvador graciously sent over some Bluefin Tuna and Yellowtail nigiri for my partner and me to try, and it was such a thoughtful gesture and delicious treat for us. We were also kindly given a key lime pie to end our meal and celebration on a sweet note. The presentation for everything was lovely, and I really enjoyed the little radish stars! I heard alllll about the happy hour specials so I was stoked when we were able to get the best outdoor seating and the happy hour was going on until 7pm he said. So naturally, ordered a bunch of things to try. Unfortunately, that was a solid 3 stars for me. It was just fine. I was actually bummed because I was so excited to try the menu items. They were okay. Ordered sliders (kinda dry and without flavor), Parmesan fries (seasoning was there but not very flavorful and the sauce was bland, the krab rangoons resembled egg rolls (that was new!) and fish tacos were meh. My friend ordered the chicken and it came with fries (the dish not happy hour selection) and that looks more substantial but maybe not worth $32. The drink was sweet (pink lady). Outdoor vibes were cool and def a great spot at the end of 3rd street but probably wouldn't come here for the food. Again, indoor (big tv!!) and outdoor set up was awesome, but food is just okay.
