First time trying this restaurant and I'm do glad it was in my list. Wait to be seated and order took a while but there was only 1 person, seating, taking orders and bringing your order. So pack patience and plan on having a leisurely meal. If you're in a rush, order out. The items ordered were the pork chop, honey catfish, gumbo and cornbread. The porkchop was awesome and served over cheese grits with assorted beans and corn. The gravy pulled it all together. The catfish was also awesome. Perfectly cooked and so was the grits it was served on. The gumbo had a bad day. One bite and the sodium meter spiked. We didn't eat the rest of it. Too much salt. The server took the feedback well. He came back and said they are making a new batch and offered to remove from the tab or try another item. He recommended the red beans and rice. Excellent recommendations, we choose the beans and rice. It was really flavorful. Im definitely getting next time. The cornbread was ok. It would have been better with melted butter on top instead of green onions. Seems like a waste of green onions. The sweet tea lived up to it's name and the rum punch is not for the weak. Disappointing Service Despite Good Food I recently visited Chez Lafayette in Tacoma with my daughter, and while the food was enjoyable, the service left a lot to be desired. Lack of Attention from the Start We were seated and given water but received no greeting or introduction from our server. After sitting for 20 minutes without acknowledgment, we began to wonder if we had been forgotten. Eventually, the server appeared, recommended the blackened fish, and took our order--blackened fish for me (server recommendation), catfish for my daughter. Unacceptable Wait Times & No Check-Ins We then waited nearly an hour for our food with no one checking in on us. Meanwhile, other tables were getting introductions, water carafes, and attentive service. It was hard not to feel overlooked. When our meals arrived, my order was wrong--I was served oysters instead of the blackened fish. The server apologized and requested a rush order on the correct dish. However, despite the "rush," I still had to wait another 25 minutes for my meal. My daughter kindly asked if I could keep the oysters so I'd have something to eat during the wait. The server said he would ask the chef, but he never returned with the oysters or an answer, so we assumed the chef declined. Minimal Support During the Meal While I waited, my daughter slowly ate her meal so we wouldn't eat separately. The server didn't check in or ask how her meal was. She eventually requested salt, pepper, hot sauce, and more water, but it took another 10-15 minutes, and I ended up retrieving my own water from the bar. Billing Discrepancy & Poor Compensation The server said he'd cover half the cost of my meal due to the error. However, when the bill came, the oysters were still on it, and only a 15% discount was applied to my entrée--not the 50% I was told. He justified it by saying the dessert he offered on the house made up for it. Honestly, I wouldn't have accepted dessert had I known it would replace a fair discount. Final Thoughts The food was good, but the experience was marred by slow, inattentive, and inconsistent service. Watching other tables receive prompt, friendly treatment while we were left waiting and overlooked made the experience feel particularly disappointing. Service matters just as much as the food, and sadly, Chez Lafayette missed the mark. read more

The other dish was shrimp and grits. The grits was lumpy like it came from a box. The sauce was runny and not the flavors of creole. The fried oysters were meh. This is the best restaurant in Tacoma. I honestly did not expect to have a 5 star review. I never thought I liked cajun food.....UNTIL NOW!! The inside is cute and comfortable. It is a small space but it still felt like you had a lot of space to enjoy without feeling crowded. Maybe it is the high ceilings or the soft pastel walls. Service was on point. Informative waitstaff, friendly but not hovering. Our table started out with a delicious wedge salad. The salad dressing - blue cheese - was creamy, cheesy, and oh so good. It had a few sliced cherry tomatoes and bacon chunks. I debated ordering one to go to have for dinner later - it was that good. Our table ordered Dirty Rice, Fried catfish and grits, and Chicken and gumbo. I had the catfish and grits. The catfish was fried to perfection; tender fish and crispy outside coating. The grits were creamy. I would order again w/o hesitation. I tried my friends dirty rice; it was also very delicious! And it was a very large serving. Fiancé and I walked in to the beautifully decorated restaurant and a waiter walked by us and said "hi." No "I'll be right with you," no "how many?" He even looked displeased with our entrance. Something felt off about the interaction. After a while of that waiter having his back to us a couple feet away, another waiter greeted and seated us. The first waiter takes our order. We order the lemonade, sweet tea, catfish, and pork rib chop. The drinks came out quickly: extremely sweet. Shortly after, the food comes: 2 orders of catfish with cornbread on the way. We inform them we ordered 1 catfish and 1 pork rib chop, no cornbread. They apologize and take the food back. We wait for an additional 30 minutes. Finally the food comes. The catfish and what looks to be ribs with a salad and cornbread. We ask if this is the pork rib chop (because I didn't recall it coming with cornbread or a salad but other sides). The waiter says "yes, this is the pork rib chop. We cook them for a long time and then deep fry them." We go along with it. Maybe they changed the sides due to ingredient availability. I bite into a rib, set it down on my plate, and look at it. The rib where I bit out of was pink and bloody. The rib was partially uncooked. At this point we're hungry and frustrated and eat what we can. Half of another was questionable. The third was cooked, didn't taste very good, and the batter was sloughing off as you ate. The cornbread was not good (I had an inkling when a nearby table left their side of cornbread uneaten) and the salad vinaigrette was crazy sour. The catfish was bland; side of grits and collard greens were good. When the waiter came to check with us, we mentioned the undercooked ribs. He offered to get another order for us to go. My fiancé agreed despite my insistence we just leave. When he comes to take the plates, he says he'll bring the check and get the box ready. He returns with the check; a small, empty to-go box; and a plate with a single rib and a small portion of the endive salad. My fiancé and I about fell out. My fiancé begins to put the rib in the box, and the waiter says "oh I guess I could've done that." In addition, the same waiter had a short demeanor towards not only us, but a nearby table. If I tell the truth here, I'm not sure it will be absorbed. This is a pop up my friend told me she's visited a couple of times so I was excited to try the dishes of which she was so fond. My experience was not one of excitement, enjoyment, nor service. I am disappointed to report that after being say nearly 1.5 hours before closing my trio didn't receive our morsels until it was 15 minutes until closing time. I only mention that because we say hungry whilst seeing entree after entree come to tables with larger parties that were sat after us. All the food that arrived was in various stages of disarray. The Rockefeller (I wish I would've taken a picture;I was afraid to catch a worm) The salad wasn't even brought to our table until all the food was brought. The fried otsters were burnt to a crisp. Very disappointing and uninviting. The waitstaff wasn't attentive at all. It was a wash honestly. I had frustration for dinner. New Tacoma Restaurant based on the Cajun/Creole vibe. Second location (Puyallup) for Mikey and his father, Mike. Limited menu but first class food. The wines are well thought out. (Who would have thought about wines to go with Creole food?) the service is excellent and the over-all vibe is lively and exciting. My buddies and I have a monthly guys dinner. One person is the host and picks location and picks up tab. We have been doing this for 3 years. Last night at Chez Lafyette was by far the best restaurant! I will go back and make this a go to for lunch meetings and dates with my wife. Food was incredible. Was really excited to get lunch here today, but left pretty disappointed. My partner and I ordered the catfish and the pork rib chop. We waited a while for the food to arrive and when it finally did the wrong food was brought to our table. That's fine, these things happen. They apologized and took the food away and verified what we wanted (catfish and pork rib chop). We waited about 30 more minutes for the new food to be brought out, only for the wrong order again. We had ordered the pork rib chop (and they confirmed it) but they brought out fried bbq ribs which is a different item on the menu. It was out first time there so we thought maybe we were confused so asked the waitor if this was the pork rib chop because it looks like fried ribs, and he assured us that he brought the correct item. We looked at the menu again when the waiter walked away and realized, no, it in fact was again not what we ordered. Whatever, food is food and we were very hungry by this point so we started eating. I ate a couple ribs and then my partner bit into one and it was raw. We told the waiter they gave us raw pork (didn't say that it was again the wrong order because we didn't want to be difficult). He took the food away and said they would remake it and box it up for us to go. He returned with a SINGLE rib on a plate and a box on the side and said "oh, I guess I could have boxed it for you". What??? Overall experience was that we got the wrong meal twice and ate raw pork. Things happen and every place has off days but this was wild. Won't go back. read more

Ambiance is amazing jazz music playing in the background presentation is beautiful.When you charge $7 for lemonade you expect the service to match and that just wasn't the case with Chez Servers weren't horrible just decent. I went today with my wife, mother in law, and two children. We ordered a round of drinks--the margarita and the spritz to start. The margarita was tasty and just strong enough and the spritz was bright and refreshing. We had the stuffed peppers--savory and sweet with a beautiful sauce and charred sausages, a true delight. We also had the okra--a classic done well. For our mains, I had the shrimp po boy. Again, a well executed classic. My MIL had the shrimp and grits and BOY was it tasty. My wife had the pecan crusted catfish and it was the best fish I've had in a while. It's a new place, so service is still working out kinks I'd say.
