This place is too hyped. Ambience is a 5 star. Husband and I went to dinner on a Friday night and live band was playing. For a summer night, ambiance was great. Staff is friendly and attentive. I mostly enjoyed the cocktails. Wait to get food was incredibly long. From time we placed order to time we got food it was 45 minutes?!! What is wild is that when arriving we were told they were busy and we had 90 minutes to eat. Please don't tell me that if half of that time is waiting for food. Jaw drop Appetizer was mediocre. We ordered a prawn cocktail. It came with a total of 4 regular (not even jumbo shrimp). Im guilty of going to bougie restaurants but have never paid 4 dollars PER shrimp. Yikes. Nothing exceptional for the price. Plain chilled shrimp with plain cocktail sauce and lemon wedge. I was interested in trying the raved jambalaya but alas no jambalaya on menu that night. I ordered the steak and frites. Quality of steak was satisfying and fries sprinkled with cheese was good and expected of a comfort meal. Exceptional enough to justify price ehh not so much. My husband ordered the bbq shrimp and grits. For creole food I was expecting an explosion of seasoning! However it was bland and no hint of bbq or spice. It's as if they're afraid of seasoning. We tried a few of the drinks, all amazing and very well balanced with the sweetness. The soft shell crab special tasted like something my family would make back home. Th gumbo was packed with flavor with the perfect amount of spice and consistency. The shrimp arancini balls were soo perfectly cooked and moist as ever, very well balanced with the shrimp. The shrimp salad tasted like they just plucked it from the garden, so fresh! So I'm gonna give this restaurant a 4 star because don't get me wrong the food is good, it's just very interesting. It's not what I expect gumbo or shrimp and grits to taste like. The gumbo was a veryyyy dark roux I've never tasted gumbo like that but it was decent, could have used some meat other than just sausage though. The shrimp and grits were good but the thing throwing me off was the use of capers in the sauce?? It made the dish taste acidic and briny so I mean it was good but I would not want to eat it again. I know some places does pork medium because the quality they get is really high and controlled really well by the seller. Im not sure if that's the case for this restaurant. The pork rib chop was definitely undercooked..it was medium rare (': the server was nice but she didn't admit that it was undercooked...I asked her if this is how it normally comes..at first she didn't answer my question but eventually she said it does come medium or medium rare..which I'm confused. I understand medium but medium rare is pulling it for the pork unless the pork chop is the highest grade they can get. I feel bit iffy now that I have consumed medium rare pork chop. I came on a Tuesday and surprisingly it was busy. The staff was welcoming and the establishment was small but pleasant. Don't be surprised if someone stops by and ask you what you ordered because that's just how delicious everything looks. This place is a treasure. The ambiance is lightly New Orleans but it's not over the top or gaudy like Mardi Gras can be. The restaurant was full but not crowded and our party of 6 was seated immediately, 15 minutes before our reservation time. The service was a tiny bit slow but we barely noticed because conversation was lively as we all discussed what we would order. Got appetizers (including the Layfayette salad, french onion soup, and panzanella) but the deviled eggs were the hit at our table! Main courses included the Fried Chicken and Gumbo, Pork Rib Chop, Blackened Fish, and Steak Frites. We all shared or at least tasted every dish, all of which were truly spectacular. The fried chicken was the best I've ever eaten, truly, but the pork - OMG - it was tender, juicy, and flavorful. The steak and the blackened fish were both cooked to perfection. We ended the meal with beignets which were light, airy and delicious! To top off a wonderful dining experience, the owner came over and chatted for a bit. When I expressed that next time I was going to order the fried chicken and gumbo, he returned with a container of the gumbo for me to take home. That's the kind of thoughtfulness and customer service that will bring me back to Chez Layfayette and its sister restaurant, Bourbon Street in Puyallup. Been wanting to try this place for some time, finally got to step in for a friend's birthday! Parking was so/so, it's street parking and building was at the corner of the hill! Stepped into the restaurant and it was beautifully designed, Mardi gras! They had necklaces at the front door up for grabs! Live band, perfect Friday start! We went March 7th, so this is based from then. Drinks were good, fairly strong. Entrees we got were good, but the Lafayette Salad and the Oysters Rockerfeller is definitely something to try there! We arrived and realized it was the "soft opening" or part of a 3-step opening process but were amazed that the place was running like clockwork already. A VERY nice space with some good territorial views out of the windows at the back of the space. One can tell they are still under partial construction or cleaning up but the whole staff were very nice and very engaging. Don't know what parking will be like in the future but we had no problem finding several options within very easy walking distance. Being a new space everything is very clean and orderly. Take note. There are 2 single occupant restrooms but no signage to tell you where to find they. They are not "door adjacent" to each other but more like "around the corner from each other." I must say there are a couple, really nice niche' spaces from where to sit and the counter,/bar space just inside the front door already seemed very popular! Give it a try. 11/10. Definitely recommend. Chez Lafayette was a delightful experience, and quite possibly one of the best meals I've had in Tacoma. Although there was a bit of a wait to get in, it was entirely worth it. The staff is so friendly (especially Nicole!), the ambiance is warm and inviting, and the food is top quality. We started with fried oysters, which were cooked wonderfully and the sauce on the side was a great touch. I had the shrimp and grits and my husband ordered the blackened steak then we got some of Mike's chippies on the side. Both plates were incredible, flavorful, and generous portions with the shrimp and steak each cooked to perfection. The chips were a great accompaniment, crispy and well seasoned. The grits were cheesy without being too much and the tomatoes in my dish were scrumptious and my favorite part. By the end I was begging my husband not to lick his plate in a public restaurant because he just dgaf, it was that good (he still did). He didn't notice until he passed four times with other food and saw that we were sitting there with nothing in front of us. He stopped to ask us if we were still waiting for appetizers. He went to check the computer, put our order in, and gave us no apologies when we decided to leave without eating. We had an absolutely wonderful dinner at Chez Lafayette yesterday. The food was a perfect 10/10, and the warm hospitality from the owners, Mike and Mikey, made the experience even more special. We started with the Hush Puppy appetizer and Caesar salad, followed by the shrimp and grits, rigatoni, blackened fish, and chicken. Every dish was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. There are four older guys that go out to dinner one night each week and we had dinner here last night. We had four different items to start the meal but I can only remember three of them, indacation of the standout quality/ taste of one of them. We had their clams, hush puppies, deviled eggs for appetizers, all was great. Had their pork chop special for main course. The pork was prepared well although a little past the medium for my liking. The grits were the star of the plate, amazing! Had their bread pudding for dessert and it was delicious. Before I begin, here's a tip: Text them (I suggest at least 2 - 3 days prior) to make reservations. Not everyone is aware that you can and they will respond. Day before (mayyyybe). Same day, well good luck. Churches Chicken it is. Most of their tables may be reserved with 1 or 2 'free-style' for walkins that more than likely...will be occupied. Now. I'm going to start with the negatives FIRST...which...Immo pile allllll under one....unfortunate ...star. I wish I could pile it all under a 1/2 uh star. Anyways...here it is: Chicken: It is..... 1. Seasoned to perfection but--you frying it way too fast. 2. Heat too high (sign when chicken crust too dark) 3. Use a thermometer to ensure temp inside is around (at least & in thickest parts)...163-165 F. 4. 2 of my sisters ordered Chicken and Gumbo--BOTH were pretty undercooked in thigh area. Not realized until they got home (leftovers) DANGEROUS. People can get very sick. Plating: 1. Plate sides AFTER main entree (like steaks/chicken etc.)--are READY to be plated. I DO prefer ALL my food HOT. Not lukewarm. Not cold. HOT. 1 of my sister's entree was BARELY even warm. Improper food temperature can foster some serious issues. Ambience: Because of the TYPE of ambience/atmosphere i.e 'grown folks' style--(owner who is AWESOME) really should consider ages 18 to 21 only OR--no children AFTER 5 or 6 pm. Look here. Listening to a crying baby ain't what's up, in a place such as this. And that's uh compliment because I diggz tha' style and atmosphere. It screams: "Grown-folks come eat good, relax...get cho' sippy sip on". I don't drink but that's what I heard in my wittle soul. Just seems ODD to have young children here when it doesn't even remotely whisper 'family style' dining. Now. The POSITIVE reason for 4 and an imaginary 1/2 uh star. I don't know WHO that chef is, but HE or SHE DEFINITELY--KNOWS their seasonings. As far as I'm concerned--they have an EXCELLENT palate for tasting. And THATS...what will make me try this again. I mean EVERYTHING was seasoned to SHEER perfection. That is a trait in my opinion--most inner city (for lack of a better term) CHEFS miss. If this person was playing Spades...yeah...he/she/they makin' alllll they 'books'. Every single book. You hear me?!! Winning every hand. Straight up. This joka's culinary gift is HONED & CALIBRATED for culinary excellence. Like...like...GOSH!!!!! For me...it was much appreciated and TOTALLY unexpected. I had: Mushroom Tapenade. SO GOOD. I started to lick that damn saucer so clean, they woulda' thought I washed it. BOMB. Fried Oysters. Tha' LORD JESUS...should come down and try that there. PERFECTLY FRIED & PERFECTLY SEASONED. Crusty on outside, soft on inside and not fishy or strong at all. BOMB. I almost ordered another batch. Pecan Crusted 'KittyFish' & Grits. FIRE. Honestly, my Grits coulda been a tad bit more thick for me but still...FIRE. I ordered a side of Crawfish tails to put over my grits. I coulda slid into tha' floor, curled up and knocked out. Tha' Greens (Collards) were even pretty well seasoned. Kitty Fish aka Catfish YESSSSS LORD. BOMB. Beignets. (No charge due to our wait)--short of slammin' em' on tha' floor-- you really can't jack that up. Good. Now. That Bread Pudding--satan who ain't NO GOOD, must've made that mess, cuz IT...ain't NO GOOD. A 6-digit, ABSOLUTE ZERO....FAIL. I started to do an imitation of Jesus in tha' Temple and outta' sheer anger--sweep that mess onto tha' floor. I found it to be an unappealing, LARGE clump of grainy...bread. Grainy because the wrong type of bread is used in the application. Dry. Hardly any sugar. Horrible. Yall need to toss that in tha' garbage. I'm sorry. Well, no...no I'm not. Oh...Keep that young brotha' Andrew. He took care of us really well. Great personality. Great service. Now, the issues mentioned (for a typical place of dining) -- would normally garner from me a 'no return' 2 star rating. However---the taste makes this place too great a dining experience. Fix those areas and this eaaaasily becomes a SOLID...5 + star spot. Easily. One more thing. We paid our bill and exited outside to the sidewalk. The owner or one of--(who had stopped at our table, laughed and talked with us on more than one occasion) literally came outside, stopped us, gave EACH of us a hug and thanked us for comin'. I'm serious as a heart attack. Talk about patron appreciation. Yeah...I'll be back. DEFINITELY. Even if it's just.... Me, Myself....and I. After all.... I...I...I love me! I'm good company to myself. The ambience was super cool, especially the bar area. Our server was very friendly, and THE. FOOD. We got an order of the stuffed peppers, and I didn't get a picture of my main dish, which was my favorite, the crawfish alfredo. My husband got the fried catfish, with a nice sweet crispy breading. First time trying this restaurant and I'm do glad it was in my list. Wait to be seated and order took a while but there was only 1 person, seating, taking orders and bringing your order. So pack patience and plan on having a leisurely meal. If you're in a rush, order out. The items ordered were the pork chop, honey catfish, gumbo and cornbread. The porkchop was awesome and served over cheese grits with assorted beans and corn. The gravy pulled it all together. The catfish was also awesome. Perfectly cooked and so was the grits it was served on. The gumbo had a bad day. One bite and the sodium meter spiked. We didn't eat the rest of it. Too much salt. The server took the feedback well. He came back and said they are making a new batch and offered to remove from the tab or try another item. He recommended the red beans and rice. Excellent recommendations, we choose the beans and rice. It was really flavorful. Im definitely getting next time. The cornbread was ok. It would have been better with melted butter on top instead of green onions. Seems like a waste of green onions. The sweet tea lived up to it's name and the rum punch is not for the weak. Disappointing Service Despite Good Food I recently visited Chez Lafayette in Tacoma with my daughter, and while the food was enjoyable, the service left a lot to be desired. Lack of Attention from the Start We were seated and given water but received no greeting or introduction from our server. After sitting for 20 minutes without acknowledgment, we began to wonder if we had been forgotten. Eventually, the server appeared, recommended the blackened fish, and took our order--blackened fish for me (server recommendation), catfish for my daughter. Unacceptable Wait Times & No Check-Ins We then waited nearly an hour for our food with no one checking in on us. Meanwhile, other tables were getting introductions, water carafes, and attentive service. It was hard not to feel overlooked. When our meals arrived, my order was wrong--I was served oysters instead of the blackened fish. The server apologized and requested a rush order on the correct dish. However, despite the "rush," I still had to wait another 25 minutes for my meal. My daughter kindly asked if I could keep the oysters so I'd have something to eat during the wait. The server said he would ask the chef, but he never returned with the oysters or an answer, so we assumed the chef declined. Minimal Support During the Meal While I waited, my daughter slowly ate her meal so we wouldn't eat separately. The server didn't check in or ask how her meal was. She eventually requested salt, pepper, hot sauce, and more water, but it took another 10-15 minutes, and I ended up retrieving my own water from the bar. Billing Discrepancy & Poor Compensation The server said he'd cover half the cost of my meal due to the error. However, when the bill came, the oysters were still on it, and only a 15% discount was applied to my entrée--not the 50% I was told. He justified it by saying the dessert he offered on the house made up for it. Honestly, I wouldn't have accepted dessert had I known it would replace a fair discount. Final Thoughts The food was good, but the experience was marred by slow, inattentive, and inconsistent service. Watching other tables receive prompt, friendly treatment while we were left waiting and overlooked made the experience feel particularly disappointing. Service matters just as much as the food, and sadly, Chez Lafayette missed the mark. read more

The other dish was shrimp and grits. The grits was lumpy like it came from a box. The sauce was runny and not the flavors of creole. The fried oysters were meh.
