I am blown away by the food here! I am a very simple eater, generally shying away from anything that seems too "fancy". My friends brought me here after they raved and raved about it. We had one of everything on the menu and split it between the three of us. Not a single dish disappointed us! Never had mussels before...loved them here. It is very hard for me to put into words how incredible everything about this restaurant is but I will try my hardest. I am from Philadelphia which has a huge food scene so I am familiar with many different types of cuisine and what good food and service should be. Chez nous far surpassed any expectations I had when I walked through the door. One of my four friends had shown me chez nous' Instagram about a week before we went to Charleston and immediately I was impressed, so my expectations were pretty high. Fortunately, not only did they not disappoint but they completely surprised me. The service was absolute top notch (thanks dirk, who is also from the philly area) and the food was some most flavorful and freshest I've EVER had! We liked the food so much we went back for lunch the very next day!! The menu changes every single day and they only offer 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, and 2 desserts which seems intimidating but it allows you to try new things and I wound up liking things I never did before (ex. Mushrooms and anchovies). The chef is the sweetest woman who was so kind and took her time to actually talk to us and thank us for coming to which I replied I should be the one thanking her for such an incredible meal. The only negative about this restaurant is that it is 10 hours away from me and not down the street!! We decided to dine here for NYE. When we made the reservation we were not told it was a set menu or that the price was $125 per head for three courses. However, we probably still would have given therm a chance. The problem I had was the quality of the food opposite the price. Simply put, the four of us all thought the food was slightly above okay, at best, but in no way was it worth $125 per person. Service was okay and seemed a bit rushed as well. I am still trying to figure out why this place is so highly recommended. My boyfriend and I had reservations here for my birthday. He booked the reservation in advance for the dining room. When we arrived, we were sat at a small bar area jammed in the corner around a bunch of other people. The hand writing on the menu was very hard to read, which is fine, but when inquiring about the menu the server blatantly ignored us. After ordering a glass of wine and some food, we waiting patiently for our wine which never came. When we asked about our drink order the manager told us that he decided we could not have any wine. We were extremely confused and it felt very rude. We received our appetizer which was okay, and then decided to leave because of the awkward encounter and the not so welcoming hospitality of the staff. We have been to many nice restaurants in Charleston and in many other cities and countries. This is was by far the worst experience we have ever had. If mediocre food and arrogant staff is your thing, then this is the restaurant for you. read more

Insane mark-up on sub-par food. Chez Nous has fallen far. I have never been so compelled to review a restaurant as my underwhelming experience at chez nous on saturday 2/20/2016. This is my 3rd time at chez nous, the first was excellent, the 2nd subpar, my wife and i went back for another try. That will certainly be the last. Here is the timeline: - Arrive at 6:50pm and while waiting for a table, already can see that 1 of the 2 appetizers are down to a few left. - Sit at 7:25pm - 755pm: After 30 minutes, finally get a drink order in (and dinner order of course), i order lamb chops, my wife orders the fish, which is now grouper as the flounder that started the day is now gone. we both order salads. - 756pm - salads arrive. obviously pre-dressed. greens, 4 thin slices of watermelon radish, lots of overpowering red onion. $13 each! - 810pm- entrees arrive. my wife's grouper is now snapper (with no notice). my lamb is 2 loin slabs. more than half of the plate is fat. there are 3 halved baby carrots. about a teaspoon of pea puree. the lamb dish is $43. -825pm - check arrives, not exactly a romantic meal where more than half the time at the table was spent waiting for a drink order. $126 (before tip) for 2 very small overdressed salads, a small slab of fish, a plate of fat, and a $16 glass of wine. There are so many places to dine in Charleston, i would not recommended going to chez nous, where the mark-up has obviously gotten completely out of hand. read more

The best gem of Charleston. Every item was perfection. Simple and done perfectly. Service is outstanding. Atmosphere is lovely and romantic. We've tried every place that was "not to be missed" in Charleston and this was the hands down favorite. What an adorable find! Absolutely loved the location, tucked away from the business of Charleston, but close enough to not feel secluded. The building itself was reminiscent of a cottage in the woods, very well designed decor for the environment they are going for and the seating arrangements were intimate and well dressed. Fantastic wine selection and lovely hand written menus. The reason for the 4 stars was that the menus were completely impossible to read, the fact that they are hand written in French and apparently in English was a lovely touch, however, the four of us at our table were able to read maybe 3 words on the menu total before giving up and waiting for our waitress to translate for us. Our meal was not a 4 or 5 star experience. The staff was arrogant, wine prices were exorbitant and the food was mixed at best: a simple grilled fish was good but should have been deboned by the server, the Basque chicken was over cooked and lacking in flavor, both of our desserts were unsatisfactory. This was a planned "dining experience" while in the area for the solar eclipse. Our reservation was made one month in advance. I need to say this because I relied on many sources for review before choosing Chez Nous for our dining experience and this highlights the importance of consistency when a restaurant is highly rated! Knowing that every night, every customer will leave satisfied. This was a major disappointment for all in our party. The food we ate was edible, but odd (a tuna and caper sauce over veal?), shrimp with rosemary, but served with no rosemary (a beautiful rosemary shrub lines one exterior wall in alley!), our wine was delicious (chosen by our French son-in-law), our service was rough and indifferent and tip reflected. Many of us come to Charleston to see what the chefs are doing with the local fish.....fish poached in olive oil sounded curious, but the snapper was out and being replaced with trout, so I asked if this was sea trout (assuming so we ordered). Our server announced when check arrived that she just found out it was NC trout! Farm or wild caught? No engagement from server and no ownership (maybe embarrassment that that was the back up fish?) Served with potatoes and carrots, could have stayed home in NC for that entree. With two options for the three courses, I would think back ups would be strong? Desserts that evening were creme brûlée (out of) and chocolate mousse. All of us at the table felt these options were unimaginative when you only have to provide two options. We have enjoyed and supported many of the fine restaurants in the Charleston area over the years and never have had such a disappointing experience. We are reasonable people that enjoy dining to share the food experience, inspire us in our own kitchens, but we do respect our money and where and how we spend it. Bad night for the chef and servers? Well $400 later the joke is on us. I work in health care and always strive to provide my best practice every day with every patient. I really liked this restaurant. Finally I found a place I liked! I was recommended by a couple who moved here from Manhattan and the husband is in the restaurant business. I told him how I felt the food is over rated in this town, being from NYC myself. We were in agreement and he and his wife highly recommended this restaurant. They said, knowing my taste, I would really like this place. They were right. I dragged a friend who is also a transplant from NY and is fussy like me and another, who is not as fussy as us. The place is very charming and you feel that you stepped into a place somewhere in the countryside of France. Very charming. Service was terrific. Very attentive. We went for lunch. They change the menu everyday. So I cannot tell you what dishes to order. They will offer you a choice of two appetizers, two entree's and two desserts. I had a fish stew that was great. Simple..straight forward....one of my friend's had a pasta dish with sausage. I had a taste and it was great. The other friend ordered the two appetizers. One was an eggplant brushetta . I cannot explain it, but it tasted great. It was very different. But good! We ordered both desserts. One was an individual fruit tart. Now I went to Cordon Bleu for pastry, so I am very critical when it comes to desserts. This was the best one I have been since I have lived here, ( next to the ones I make..:). the other one, was not great. They explained it was another type of tart, but when it arrived it was three tiny cookies. It was described as almond. But the lemon over powered the almond taste. So that was not so great. I did not give it 5 stars because the restaurant I feel is a bit over priced.....I know prices and for a place like this, I feel the prices are a bit too high. Especially for lunch. When I lived in London, I went to this great place called Maggie Jones. Their lunch menu was a great deal. Almost half the price than their dinner menu. Also, when I wanted to order a glass of wine, I saw they had a glass of Rose from Provence. It was one of those really really hot days. Well, they only offered one and it was $17!!!! That was absurd. Stupid . And anyone, who knows anything about wines, knows that there is no way one would spend $17 on a glass of Rose! So that annoyed me quite a bit. And a bit of a turn off. I ordered a Sancerre for $12, but again, what annoys me to know end, in these expensive places, is the pour is short. And it is not in big glasses. I mentioned this in another review I just wrote on a new place that just opened that is also expensive. I know restaurants make their money on booze and desserts. i worked in enough of them to know. But please, pour the glass half way...these are not goblets that they are pouring the wine in. I know the difference between a goblet and regular wine glass. But other than that, I would go back for dinner and I think it's probably a better deal to order a bottle of wine than by the glass:) But my recommendation to the owners is to perhaps make their lunch menu a wee bit less expensive and work on their wine by the glass prices and their "pour". read more

Our last meal of our trip to Charleston and it was the the best. We loved this sweet, intimate spot. I had been following their menu on facebook for several weeks prior to our trip so I was really excited when the menu was posted the day we were supposed to go for dinner. A quaint, engaging antique house that had been tastefully transformed to a restaurant set back from the street to offer an environment that transports you from where you had just left your car. These characteristics are represented through the wonderful food and wine. A very limited menu of two offerings each of an appetizer, entree and dessert. The restaurant represents cuisines from France, Italy and Spain is the menu. We shared both main course offerings of the evening-home made ribbons on pasta with a braised lamb in a light tomato sauce. Sauce was well-seasoned with the perfect to the tooth pasta. The flounder was well-seared as it topped asparagus and cippollini onions in a ravigote sauce, capers and hard boiled egg. Flavors were spot on with the perfect acidity to balance. The waiter was very professional, informative and assisted in the wine for the meal, a delicious Tempranillo which have sought from local wine merchants. Despite the limitations of food offerings, you are sure to find a course to more than your liking. The setting is so warm and inviting as the mood takes you back to the time when this was a house. This is an offering you don't want to miss amongst the multiple Charleston options. read more
