But, after reading the menu, I changed my mind and gave it a try. The food was amazing and our waitress Grace was friendly and she suggested the steamed fish filets that was awesome! It's more like 3.5 stars - 5 for ambiance, 4 for service, and 2 for food. I'd like to say that I'm generally tougher on Chinese restaurants, but that's what happens when I have a momma that whips up some mean dishes and the darn good food I've had growing up in Beijing. Came here on a Saturday night with a reservation and was seated immediately. It was dim and nicely decorated. The place wasn't crowded, but the booths were mostly taken while there were many emply tables in the middle of the restaurant. Our waitress apologized ahead of time for being busy. Maybe management should consider dividing up the booth assignments since those are the preferred spots. We ordered the Peking Duck (whole), the Orange Chicken, and the Braised Boneless Beef Short Ribs Chinese Style. ~$75 before tip Orange Chicken - this was tough, I focused on chewing too much and didn't really notice the flavor. They either overcooked them or they got some old chickens. Braised Beef - this was extremely tough, and we had to speak up when our waitress checked on us. She was very nice and insisted on bringing us another dish. She came back with this pork dish and it was nice to try something new, although I wouldn't order it on my own. They must got some old cows as well. Peking Chicken - This was the best tasting dish of the night and I recommend most people to try it if you like duck. With that said, if you've actually had Peking Duck from Beijing, don't expect this to be comparable. To be fair, it was probably the closest thing I've had in the States. The duck took the longest to prep because our waitress told us it would take a while to slice the whole thing. But really, the slices weren't thin enough, the skin wasn't crispy enough, and there should NEVER be bones. The upside: the white and brown rice were surprisingly good. Also, while looking at the menu, I was a bit disappointed at how they didn't have more vegetarian dishes. We love Chi. It is bar far the best Chinese food in Reno...You won't like Chi if you are a fan of the Panda Express. They are two very different eating experiences. The food at Chi is fresh and well prepared. I moved here about 15 years ago from NY and missed the Chinese and Italian food from that area. When I found Chi we were very happy...it felt like home. We always bring out-of-town freinds here and everyone has a good experience. I can't understand people who think that it is too expensive. It is reasonably priced and so delicious. I think Chi is best Chinese restaurant in Reno but that does not say much when competition isn't that great. Beautiful atmosphere, good food and service. Manager is the one that needs work as he is the captain of the ship (restaurant). Our party had dinner there which was great but we seemed to have talked to long so he came us and said "he needed the table for waiting customers' in a somewhat frantic attitude and tone that turned us off. He could have said, he needed the table and if we would like to continue our conversation in the bar, he would buy us a drink - which would have been nice (even though we didn't drink) but we did bring a party over to spend money there. Wonderful meal...really a dining experience! Nice quiet atmosphere, an attentive server, and delicious food! We each had a Chi dinner for $24... I had cashew chicken and my son got the giant prawns in spicy schezuan sauce. Served with brown rice and very flavorful. The appetizer plate comes with the meal. The crab rangoon were the best I've ever had. The wings and spring rolls were good too. Our meals even included mandarin gelato and almond cookies. Fairly pricy, but worth every bite. A couple months back my boyfriend and I decided to give this place a shot. The prices looked decent, and the atmosphere was very nice. We showed up around 6pm on a Saturday and the hostess sat us in a comfy booth. We waited and waited and waited. After 10 minutes we flagged down a busser and asked if the waiter was going to come greet us. She assured us a waiter would be with us soon. We waited some more. After 20 minutes or so no one came to greet us, so we got up and left. Then last Saturday my mom suggested we come here, and I thought why not? I'll give it another go. This time was very nice. We were greeted promptly and the food was AMAZING, however when it came to the bill we were both disappointed. It was $43.65 total and so my mom and I together put down three 20's and a $5. and asked for change. We waited and waited some more. I made eye contact with the waiter and he continued to go on his way. I was about ready to ask for the manager when he came back (20 minutes later!) with two 10s and a couple ones. I hate it when waiters do this. What gave him the idea that a 10 dollar tip was appropriate after that whole ordeal?? He did not even offer an apology for the delay in change! My husband and I were at the peppermill for our anniversary and wanted to have a nice dinner. We went early and got a nice booth. The ambiance was calm and elegant. We ordered the dinner which came with three appetizer samples and they were very good. Our main dishes schezhwan (sp) prawns were delicious mildly spicy and snow peas perfect. The sweet and sour pork was the best I have ever had. Not fatty or "fried" it had a light crust (crunch) with very tender flavorful pork. They brought us a special dessert for our anniversary, a white chocolate ginger mouse with mango sauce which was to die for. We will definitley eat there again. BBQ sweet and sour ribs were fatty. Tempura prawns very greasy and the Combo fried rice greasy and mushy. Developed a big stomach ache soon after those greasy prawns and rice.. Ruined my night. These days, I'm doing more cooking, and eating out less. But I've been craving Chinese food, and there's no better time than Christmas Eve for Chinese food. Friends chose Chi, and off we went. It's deep on the casino floor of the Peppermill, so points docked for having to navigate the smoke to get there. The ambiance was pleasant, about what I would expect for 'fine dining' (the category Chi falls into in the Peppermill's listing of it's eateries). My expectations were raised quite high by the large number of Chinese folks eating there. They were dashed pretty quickly though. The service was good, our servers were friendly and accommodating to the various dietary restrictions we brought. The food took quite forever to get to us, and mediocre is the best I can call it. The overwhelming sense was that it was quite pale. Steamed fish with vegetables, tofu with cashews, noodles with chicken and vegetables, even the veggie egg rolls-- it was all just so pale. The only spice was ginger. I love ginger, but there's a universe of spices for flavoring Chinese cooking, and it's much broader than ginger. The food was edible, so I'll give it two stars. But it was bland, boring, and definitely not fine. read more

An honestly horrible experience. I was missing a spoon, but when I asked the waiter for another one, he told me that there weren't any spoons left... Either this is a deplorable restaurant that lacks even basic utensils such as spoons or an unprofessional restaurant with nasty customer service that doesn't respond to its customers' simple needs. Then, when the soup came, they split the soup in wrong portions!? Three people at our table of eleven were left without soup. Would strongly encourage this restaurant to hire some more competent waiters who actually know how to count. My review is not based on how the food is but to AWARE people of a scam we had at this restaurant. We paid our bill $46.86 with card and left a $20 as tip, we wrote on the receipt "cash" on tip, and as we walked out our waiter "Grace" server 13607 told us we didn't signed our receipt nor left a tip, we told her it must have felt and walk back and there was nothing on the floor, our table or in her cashier room "according to her". She made us sign a another copy and emphasize on leaving another tip, we were so confused that signed it again and left another tip, so this person kept the first receipt where it said "cash" made it look as if we didn't sign it nor tip her, How come neither of those where found?! Both "disappeared "???? She managed to get a double tip!!! One that only she knows took initially and a second one we gave! Very disappointing... Make sure you pay with card!!!!! I have to say i was farely impressed with this place. I am not sure why the horrible reviews from some of the other patrons, perhaps they were too drunk from the massive Inferno from the fireside prior to eating here? haha jk. I am a pretty picky eater and i knw my chinese food. This place isnt bad, but perhaps i was expecting the worst that it seemed pretty decent in the end. The decor was nice, asian but not tacky or cheesy, menu wasnt massive which was a nice surprise not having to dig through hundreds of stuff on the menu. The dishes were nicely prepared, not extremely bland or over seasoned, they werent spectacular 5 star chinese restaurant quality but they were edible and farely tasty for a chinese restaurant in RENO, common, do you expect award winning authentic chinese food in reno? no. Finally the price. I have to say it's inexpensive, and for the portions you get, it's dirt cheap! $24 for the set menu of appy, main dish, rice, and icecream. The main dish was pretty big for a single person. We went with a party of 5 adults and ordered 2 set dinners, 1 duck and pork dish (massive, came in a fruit plate) 1 extra bowl of white rice (set dinner came with 2) and even had enough left over for a doggy bag. At first I was feeling a bit sketchy in terms of ordering not enough, then i was pleasantly surprised when the portions came out, and finally surprised some more when i tasted the stuff. I am not sure where people get their chinese food, but $15-20 for a dish is the standard price if not a bit on the low end... if you get into shark fin or even any sort of 'proper' chinese food besides the westernized chinese food you get at a food court panda express like lemon chicken, spring rolls, sweet and sour pork, etc etc, it's goin to cost more than $10 a dish. Also, our waitress was a very pleasant french lady (well not really, she was from quebec) and there was a caucasian hostess as well so no, the place is not all chinese staffed. For desert our waitress was so nice and gave everyone a bowl of icecream instead of just 2 from the set menu (and didnt charge us). However i found the green tea icecream too sweet and didnt have a strong enough fresh tea flavor. The lychee icecream was to die for though, very strong and fresh lycee flavor as a refreshing finish to a pleasantly tasty dinner. Are you going to get award winning chinese fine dining here? no. This was the only 'upscale' dining option open on a monday at the Peppermill so it's where we went. For an appetizer we had a sampler platter that i would skip in the future. It had pot stickers, spare ribs, egg rolls, tempura shrimp and various dipping sauces. For $16, it was really mediocre. For dinner we had pad thai and general chicken. Both entrees were extremely fresh tasting and very flavorful. Even though the chicken was fried it was not heavy tasting. The service was excellent and the coconut mojitos were really good too. If you are a local you get an automatic 20% off everything at the peppermill making the price very reasonable. read more

We usually go to Chi 3 to 4 times a year. We and our friends always enjoyed the food; but this time around things were changed. The prices has gone up which is understandable. Unfortunately the quality and portions has dropped. It was disappointing. The service still great though. This place could be so much better. After all the ambiance and settings exhibit a mood for some Chinese fine dining. Only problem is the food doesn't match the service or setting. While the menu has some nice high end cuisine. Of the times I come here (because of casino comps) the food often served lukewarm. Which is sad. May be there isn't enough staff to bring the food out or the kitchen is too small to produce the items at the same time and so the food sits under a warmer in the kitchen until the rest is ready to go. When Chinese restaurants use a wok and cook foods at 500+ degree. It should come out steaming hot. But no... everytime, the food comes out lukewarm. It's no longer saucy and delicious. It's all but evaporated. Would I spend my money here? No. Just comps. I rather drive down the street to Taiwanese cuisine 2-D Wok or towards the freeway to Crawfish Asian Cuisine (Chinese fine dining). read more

Here's one thing that I hate about Reno Yelp. You get cheapskates who come on here and complain about pricey food. Their standard is Panda Express, and no, the food here doesn't taste like Panda Express. Why don't you go outside your comfort zone and try some real Chinese food. I'm sure hardly any Yelper here tried their braise abalone, fish maw, sea cucumber, lobster, crab, sole, or bass. "Oh, the General's Chicken wasn't fried enough," you donkey if you want cheap General's chicken go to China Diner. It's just because this place is in a casino people expect cheap, Americanized Chinese food like in a cafeteria or something. I don't like casino dining, trust me, but this is one of the best Chinese places in Reno along with Caio Oriental Cafe and Peoney.
