Best boba I've ever had. I had no idea there was a Philly Chinatown chain of Chicha San Chen and I'm so glad I stumbled upon it. The cashier was so friendly and offered free samples of one of their mango teas. I ended up ordering the honey osmanthus oolong tea and it was delicious. Chicha San Chen is a global franchise of tea shops started in Taiwan around 1998, and two of their claims to fame are: * Winning awards from the International Taste Institute, which apparently is equivalent of a Michelin Star. * The use of their patented "Teapresso" machine which is used to freshly brew concentrated tea and coffee base for the drinks. My relatives in California rave about Chicha San and enjoy posting IG stories or onto other social media sites of them standing in line and waiting for their boba drinks (on occasion for over an hour). Sometimes I wonder if there is a long line for a place, are the services/goods that a business is providing that amazing...or is it just hype? During my recent foodie trip to Philly, I stopped into the Chicha San to decide for myself. True to form, there was a line stretching out the door, and after waiting about 20 minutes to place my order, I was informed that it could be up to 30-40 minutes until my drink was ready, since every beverage is "hand crafted." Thankfully, I only had a 10 minute wait and a table in the shoebox sized seating area opened up for us to take refuge from the January cold. Part of the marketing is the "carrying strap" attached to the cardboard cup holder. Interesting I guess, but in actuality, the string is not very comfortable to hold for long periods as it "digs" into your fingers. I sat near the Teapresso machine, and did indeed watch as batch after batch of tea was brewed into glass beakers, giving off an almost laboratory vibe as if Chicha San is performing alchemy by transforming the humble tea leaf into some type of elixir. As for the beverage, it was alright; nothing special in my estimation. I ordered my usual of Jasmine milk tea, grass jelly, light ice, and 30% sweetness. Tea flavor was more pronounced than at other boba shops, the grass jelly had a nice texture, but surprisingly, the drink was mildly flavored. Which is likely healthier for me, but just keep this in mind if you prefer your drinks on the sweeter side. Would I wait for nearly an hour again at this place? No, since I feel there are other shops which provide an equivalent if not better beverage at a similar price point. I visited when they no longer had lines. The first time I visited chicha San Chen I waited an hour and a half. I'm surprised that there's no longer lines at all. There's a few amount of seats in the back if you wanna stay and sit to enjoy your drink I was able to get my drink within five minutes and it was delicious. I got just dong ding tea with bubbles. I just normally get at chicha San Chen and it was as expected. The drink was good. Bubbles were good. Nothing really out of the ordinary or special. They do have their occasional special drinks, but I normally get what I am used to. Maybe next time I'll try one of their special drinks. read more

This boba tea spot was okay to me but I also accredit it to what I ordered. The actual store is very cute and modern and it seems that they are serious about their tea. I don't feel like there is a lot of variety in the menu selection so for me that's a bit of a con. I also knocked a star off because they only use whole milk. I feel like in 2024 you should at least have 1 plant based option. I didn't get a milk tea so I think if I did I would have liked it more. Go when it rains because the lines are way shorter! Got lucky that there was seating and no one behind us in line. Since every tea is fresh brewed it takes a little longer. The teas are very solid and boba is done well with the right consistency and sweetness. Yes the string cup holders are unique but not really that crazy. The drink prices are slightly more than other shops but the quality is better than the surrounding area, though I've always felt Philadelphia's boba has never been great. The hype is SO REAL. I've been hearing so much about this place from my friends about this "3-star michelin" equivalent boba shop, so I had to give it a try. I asked my friend what I should order and they said to get the "regular black milk tea, no alterations." Simple enough. I'm usually someone who orders 25-30% sugar, so I was a little scared it would be too sweet. There was a lot of people there that night, but the line to order was quick and not too long. I wish they had a larger menu posted somewhere as the small type was straining my eyes. Their boba prices are significantly higher than most shops. My boba came up to over $7, almost $8, for the most basic option. We found space in the back and watch the employees make all the drinks. They use an espresso-like machine to brew their tea for each cup- so cool! Their higher prices make sense by the amount of tea they use for each cup!!! We saw about 3 tablespoons each. We waited about 15 mins for our drink, which came cutely packaged with a carrying string attached to the sleeve. The drink was amazing! Such strong, fragrant tea flavor and the bobas were still warm and soft. Not too sweet at first, but became a little too much for us by the end. I LOVED IT. My mom who isn't a boba person said she liked it, and that she would come back herself. Major complement there. Only thing I would change is that I'd slightly lessen the sugar level next time. For one, I have never disliked anything I ordered in the menu. The menu is simple with only a few base teas but are customizable in terms of add ons and creamer choice. Imagine my excitement to try one of the first location of specialty tea paces on the East Coast originally from Taiwan. We were there a bit early on Chinese new year recently and already there was a line forming. The location is right in the heart of Chinatown which was a perfect stop after picking up some bakery for my mom. Walking into the shop, the aesthetic was just beautiful with simple yet elegant decor. They take such pride in making the perfect tea beverage and they brought out a tea sampler that you can smell each one to get a sense of which tea you want to go in your boba. There was green tea, osmanthus oolong tea, high mountain pouchong tea, cassis black tea and so much more! If you're lost, just ask one of your tea attendants and they will gladly let you know which tea is a good pairing to the flavor you like. I learned that all of their beverages won awards from International Taste Institute 2021 which is rated by Michelin Star Evaluate program that certifies food and beverage. You even get to see your tea being brewed by their patented Teapresso Machine. Such great care and expertise goes into your boba drink. The whole experience was worth the visit itself. I think that a lot of the negative reviews may be because of the high expectations this place carries, especially with their ITI certification. The quality of the tea is definitely there, "perfect" sweet is equivalent to about 70% at a typical boba shop, boba balls are soft but still chewy. If you are looking for milk tea, I would make sure to get cream rather than milk because I can imagine that milk would be a little too watery (like if you tried to make milk tea at home iykyk). There was no wait to order when I got there, but I did wait about 10-15 minutes for my drink as there were others waiting ahead of me. It is a $10 minimum to use your credit card. The packaging is cute and convenient with the string/strap to carry your drink. They do have some seating indoors, but it's often packed that you may not be able to find seating. read more

Despite being more milk-forward, the oolong tea was still fresh and fragrant. I also tried their classic bubble milk tea. This was a perfectly balanced classic milk tea that was tea-forward without being so strong that it starts to feel all weird and heavy on your tastebuds. The boba here is the exact correct texture every single time, and I am obsessed with the consistency not just across visits but also across franchises (I've been to their location in Washington before). Lovely And Amazing. Some things I've noticed: If you don't get regular ice then you risk the drink being slightly too warm because the boba comes warm. Also, if you don't get regular ice then the boba won't properly firm up to become the perfect texture, so get that voluptuous scoop of ice that they give you when you don't ask for anything different. Additionally, perfect sweet is a pretty good place to start even if you usually get less sugar (I get 0-30% sugar usually, and perfect sweet is generally just right. Would love to be educated on the tea's notes or something; they are written with fancy names, but no description. The menu is set up for you to add additional flavors, milks or toppings for extra costs. I ordered the oolong tea with oat milk (+1.50) and fresh tapioca pearls! The oolong was subtle and smokey. Tapioca pearls were sweet, fresh and chewy. They brew each cup of tea as it is ordered, so the wait can be long at times. Luckily, I went during an off time and the service was quick! The cafe is clean and the staff is friendly. I thought it was strange that they do not have a public trash bin for garbage. No wifi posted for a cafe. And the staff are strict about outside food and drinks. Parking is non existent in Chinatown. And as of 11/2024, they have a $10 minimum credit card. During the waiting time, I was completely mesmerized by their tea brewing machines and the aroma of tea that was so pleasant and relaxing. The drink itself was so refreshing! The taste of the orange was prominent and fresh, without being overwhelming. The tea aftertaste was not bitter and complimented the fruit so well. Overall, a great drink! I would say that I did go during a time where the wait for a drink wasn't super lengthy. I'm really glad a tea shop like Chicha made its way to Philly's Chinatown. With its tea forward beverages, this place has easily become a local go to. Even as you are walking within a block of the place, you can hear people say "I hope there isn't a line", or "Maybe the wait won't be too bad today?" Finally, choose your level of sweetness and ice, then you're good to go! They also have some pretty good featured and seasonal drinks~ Honestly, you can't go wrong with any combination. I definitely frequent this place more than the other options in Chinatown. My only thing I wish that could be improved was the space. It's a little cramped, limited seating, and the bathroom seems to always be out of order. Guessing because of the tight space, they prefer you to order and go. If you do decide to sit, it can also feel cramped because as people wait for their drinks, the waiting line kind of shares the seating area.
