In house made tasty Banchan ;)
Ben C.

Upon midnight arrival in the questionable area of Central LA Western, a security guard and fee is required at the parking lot. Bring your LVs in with you. Seating is plentiful to where they can serve an entire church. Very spacious especially being empty. Worrisome. Nevertheless wood furnishings and table tops clean with standard advertising parchment. Utensils and plenty of napkins set. Banchan focused on housemade kimchi assortment. Wow'd at first bite ~ fresh crunch, bright red pepper taste, not overly salty. Tasty on its own! Galbi Tang Soup loaded above the rim! Fresh meat on bone, odorless and non-greasy, salt and pepper on hand to your preference. Delicious and filling. Yuk Gae Jang just as good. Mool Man Doo ~ piping hot, fresh, clean filling, wrapping a nice chewy texture. Delish. Here is what's funny ~ when arriving the spot was empty. During the meal, seats were filled suddenly and the joint was loud. Definitely a late nite fav for locals. Servers hustling and checking on us regularly and attended to our refill requests promptly. Celebrity Wall display shows off the restaurant's reputation and popularity. Came out stuffed and completely satisfied.

We recently visited Sun Nong Dan with a large group of 9 people, including parents and kids. We were greeted warmly by a very nice host who welcomed us and seated us promptly, which we really appreciated given the size of our group. The food was amazing -- definitely the highlight of the experience. Everything we ordered was flavorful and worth coming back for. The galbi jjim was especially delicious, and the rice cakes in it were soft, chewy, and absolutely delicious. Unfortunately, after a change in servers, our experience shifted. Our server, Luna, seemed like she may have been having a bad day. There was very little eye contact, and interactions felt somewhat cold and rude when we asked for things. We understand everyone has off days, but the service did not match the quality of the food or the hospitality we initially received. Overall, great food and a wonderful start to the visit, but the service experience with Luna left us disappointed.

Sun Nong Dan really doesn't need another review, but it's popular for a reason. I would always come here growing up and was forced to order the ox knee bone soup because it's apparently very healthy and also a hard dish to make and find in the US. I didn't enjoy it too much when I was younger, but I ordered it using free will today and it was a lot better than I remembered! Maybe my taste buds have matured...it's definitely an acquired gelatinous texture but I would recommend you give it a try. All that collagen probably does wonders for your skin! The soup is scalding hot savory bone brothiness. Most people like to add salt because the soup itself is a little plain, but I personally think it's perfect as is, and all the different kimchis they give you balance it out We went for their morning special which is really a great deal- four soup options on their menu for $11.99, you really can't find this anywhere in LA. A lot of the morning crowd were older Korean people, who all looked like they were enjoying their breakfasts and are probably all regulars here. I would definitely be a regular if I lived closer to here, but if you're in the area and willing to wake up early, would definitely recommend! I have to come back to try the galbijjim with cheese here but that seemed a little too crazy to order at 9 AM lol.

Popular and 5 stars for a reason! The team here is incredibly efficient, so even when it's busy, the wait moves fast. This is likely their most spacious location, with plenty of seating to go around. I usually go for the ox knee soup, but this time we shared the beef cheek soup and the #25 (Koh Gabi JJim) with added cheese and rice cakes. The highlight was definitely the tableside torching of the cheese plus it pairs perfectly with the chewy rice cakes! Pro Tip: Valet is available in the lot ($2 lunch / $5 dinner). If you're out of cash, they conveniently accept Zelle at the valet stand.

Only waited outside for less than 15 minutes even when it looked like a long line. Great service, so kind and very fast. Kimchi was truly delicious, I appreciated all the sides. #17 was so yummy. A nice soup broth with super yummy meat that I basically made into a rice bowl with broth seasoned rice. It was so delicious, you can customize it how you want. I wanna try that cheese plate next time!

After attending a concert at the wiltern the previous night, I woke up craving some soup. I looked at the places near my hotel, and discovered this place! I went in the morning and got seated immediately with no wait. The restaurant was clean and the staff were diligent. I got the brisket soup as I didn't want something too spicy. They served the soup with some delicious Korean sides. The soup is initially plain so you can adjust the salt level to your taste by adding salt from the mini-salt jar. The soup came with a lot of brisket and a good amount of glass noodles. I had a great time enjoying the meal, and was very full afterwards. This place has great portions of food and sides, and they taste fresh and yummy. This place is wonderful, and I will try to come back to this place next time I come back to LA!

Hearty, hot, beef soups! Great service. Really appreciate the staff explaining the menu.

Visited: 4/8/26 Soh Muh Ri Gom Tang / Beef Cheek Soup ($19.99) = 5/10 This was pretty expensive for what was served. The soup was extremely bland and lacked the rich, hearty flavor the menu described. They provide salt, pepper, and green onions so you can season it yourself, which is traditional and explained on the menu, but even after adding everything, it still tasted very watered down. The beef cheek was overcooked and didn't have much flavor either. I ended up adding the side dishes, like kimchi, into the soup just to give it some flavor, and that honestly made it much more enjoyable. In the end, I liked the side dishes more than the actual entrée. It being flavorless was also surprising since the food took a while to come out. Parking: There is parking available behind the restaurant. We went late at night, so it wasn't crowded, but I'm not sure how limited parking might be during busier hours. Atmosphere & Service: We were seated in the back of the restaurant near the cleaning supplies, so there was a strong chemical and damp towel smell that made the experience less pleasant. The servers themselves were efficient and helpful, so no complaints there. Just a heads-up that takeout containers cost extra (around $1). The bathroom was clean and pleasant. The restaurant itself was visually appealing, with an Olaf statue outside that I thought was really cute, and traditional Korean-style artwork inside that added character to the space. There was also a security guard present who came off a bit rude and spent most of the time on his phone.

Everyone recommended this place to me when I said I was visiting K-town and I can see why! The whole dining experience was great. There's $5 valet parking right next door so we didn't have to worry about circling around for parking. We got here a little earlier so the wait was only about 10 minutes for a party of 2. Ordering was quick and easy and the service was great! The Galbi Jjim is their most known dish, and it lived up the hype! The portions were big, with generous amounts of meat too!

4.5 STARS My frame of reference for 5 stars is BCD Tofu House. I let you know this, to determine whether our values align at all. Galbi Tang - $23.99 - this beef short rib soup is spectacular- my cultural frame of reference is that it's like the Mexican soup, cocido de res. Koh Galbi Jjim - $119.99 for Large Add cheese - $8 Add rice cake - $6 Koh Galbi Jjim is a huge dish of braised beef short ribs, back rib, and oxtail plus delicious cheese and rice cakes and all of the complimentary banchan. We chose a medium spice level. In love with the sharing aspect of Korean food culture. Our decision to order Koh Galbi Jjim was inspired by the strangers seated next to us. When those patrons left, a woman sat to dine by herself and remarked at how good our food looked. So we invited her to eat with us-- since it was enough to feed 4-5 people, easily anyways! Great value considering how much food we were able to take home. Leftovers made for some great breakfasts and soups the following day, too. Street parking was available when I went late night. There's also a parking lot (it might be paid parking).

This place is nuts. First off, it is PACKED! I mean, do that many people go to eat soup? Secondly, what the???? Extra meat? I cannot imagine extra meat in this soup. Let me put it this way, after eating and eating, I still had more meat in my soup than any place in Hawaii would give for the entire bowl. Look, I am giving this 5 stars just for the sheer audacity of making soup like this. The side dishes were good and the service prompt. This place is another well run machine - get you fed FAST. They have restrooms-which you will need after eating all of that soup and meat. I've never had soup like this before. Believe me when I say extra meat is NOT needed! OMG!

A staple stop whenever I'm in the ktown area. Giant galbijjim where the beef soaks up all the sauce and seasonings. Meat was sooo tender and melt in your mouth. What's there to not like about cheesy meat, rice cakes, radish, and potatoes? A medium size (meant for 2-3 people) disappeared so fast we wished there was more but it's an amazing hearty and filling meal that will keep you full all day. Service was quick and friendly.

Ask the Community - Sun Nong Dan

Is there a morning special price for soups?

Yes. Morning special on number of soups before 10am is 11.99

Is the morning special menu still available?

Not in all locations since Covid early morning specials went away at most locations

Is this location more toddler friendly?

This location has more room for you to put high chair for toddler than the original Sun Nong Dan....

Where can I park my car?

There's a plaza just for sun nong dan or you can try to brave street parking.

This location looks like wheelchair accessible, just not sure about the other location , I haven't figured out which one is closer to our hotel. Are both restaurants in Korean town?

Are 2 large orders of galbi jim good for 10 pax?

Yes, I would think so. We typically order one medium for 3-4 people.

Is there an individual or 2 person portion for GalbiJim?

No. But you can get the medium and take home leftovers 😅

Is this place really open 24/7?

Yes and it feels like a club at night (cuz of the music). It's awesome!

Do they take reservations for 10-13 people ? How's the parking only valet? Thanks

What kind of broth is used in the rice cake soup?

Likely beef broth, doubt it would be vegetarian or vegan broth, if that's what you asking.

Do they have a breakfast special like the other place? It was like $9 for 3 or 4 selected items normally $15

But as beef stew goes...it wasn't stew-ish enough. Mostly because it has some strong seasonings, and the pieces of beef were cut really small, so it was more like a beef stir fry. That said, it was really tasty. Very flavorful, and the quality of the beef was good. I can see myself going there again. As for he place itself, the staff were nice, though going at lunch meant they were a little (and understandably) distracted. The website makes it seem like it's just for pick-up or delivery, but they have a couple small tables, both inside and outside. And I do mean small. Two people max. There's also a decent sized parking lot (the place is in a mini mall), and there's usually street parking, but at the moment Wilshire is under construction, so plan accordingly.

The Spicy Seafood Kalguksu also wasn't terribly spicy, so I would definitely recommend it if you can indulge in some spice. We also ordered the Medium Bossam and that really completed the meal. It's been sitting on my saved list for a while, and honestly, this turned out to be the perfect opportunity. The space itself is bright, clean, and welcoming with warm woody tones throughout. Casual setup where you order at the counter and they bring the food out to you. I had already looked through the menu beforehand, so the real challenge was narrowing down what to order for one person. I failed at that... and I'm very happy I did. Started with the Pig Ear Salad 滷豬耳朵. Braised thin sliced pig ears dressed with soy sauce, chili oil, sesame oil, scallion, and cilantro. OMG. So good. Tender, flavorful, perfectly braised, with that satisfying chewy texture done right. Also got the Fried Peanut Salad 五味花生 with garlic, cilantro, scallions, vinegar, and Thai chili. Super crunchy, bright, refreshing, and honestly addicting. I added a cup of the Hot & Sour Soup 酸辣湯 too. Organic tofu, beech mushroom, carrot, bamboo, woodear mushroom, and egg. Super comforting with a really balanced tang and peppery heat. Not overly thick or heavy like a lot of Americanized versions can be. Exactly the kind of soup you want during a long travel day. For noodles, I ordered the Dan Dan Noodles 擔擔麵. Sesame-peanut sauce, cucumber, cilantro, crushed peanuts. Delicious on its own already, but I ended up adding some of the fried peanuts from the salad into the noodles and it became even better. Then the Three Cup Chicken 三杯雞 with sesame oil, soy sauce, rice wine, and Thai basil. I do wish it had a little more wok hei, but overall the flavor was still really comforting and savory. Extremely good with rice. Had a glass of Gewürztraminer alongside everything, which paired surprisingly well with the spice and aromatics. Their wine list leans more organic / natural wine focused, which felt very LA in a good way. Ended up sitting at a high top next to one of the managers and had a great conversation throughout the meal. She ended up hooking me up with the Traditional Shaved Ice 傳統刨冰 with grass jelly, red bean, boba, sweet potato balls, taro balls, brown sugar syrup, and condensed milk. I was already planning to order it anyway, and wow... I finished the entire thing. The brown sugar syrup was incredibly fragrant. This spot is MILES ahead of the BCD that litters the same strip mall.
