This place is cash only! Just so you are aware. I have had both the chicken and the beef bowl, and they are both pretty good. For the price, it is a good meal, with rice, veggies, and choice of meat. It is a hole in the wall fast food place. It's very affordable though. For the price, I feel like I'm eating healthier by coming here over the Jack in the Box next door for the same amount of money. read more

Worst teriyaki I've ever had. Super salty and not at all sweet which is the way teriyaki is supposed to taste. Chewy meat and old veggies. I'm not sure who is giving this place a good rating but even fire island is better then this place. Couldn't even finish my food is was so awful. read more

Wow! I've been driving past this place for a decade, looking over and thinking, "It's a converted Taco Bell. What are Mexican-Americans going to know about Japanese barbecue?" But every once in a while I get a hankering for good teriyaki like I could get in San Diego (near UCSD) and Seattle (just about everywhere) and I'd think, "Maybe I should at least give them a try." And when I got a hankering for Teriyaki this evening I looked them up and found this Yelp page and thought, "Ha! They say they're found by searching for 'Teriyaki Simi Valley' and 'Chinese Simi Valley'! Doesn't anyone around here know Teriyaki = tori [chicken] + yaki [grilled] in _Japanese_?" So after reading the abundance of strong reviews (and a few negative entries as well) I grab a few bucks and head over to give the place a try. As I'm pulling into the parking lot I'm thinking, "Yep. Used to be a Taco Bell." and when I step inside I see some Asian guy standing behind the counter taking some orders and a few other people staring up at the menu (see image). I figure "Well, it can't be too bad with an authentic Japanese person running the place. He's probably second- or third- generation Japanese whose parents got booted off a farm around here during World War II." And then I hear him tell the customer the price and ask the next customer what she wants and I realize, "Wow! That's a Chinese accent! It really is a Chinese Teriyaki place!" So I take a couple pictures of the menu and zap them off to my wife's phone and I place an order that ends up being less than 10 bucks for both of us! And I watch carefully as the other workers quickly grill up a fresh chicken breast, chop it carefully into cubes and lay it gently on a bed of rice & veggies, and then ladle sauce over the top before sealing the bowl and wrapping it in a bag for me to take. Yeah, it took three different people (four if you count Mr. Cashier/Manager) less than 5 minutes to get my order from "May I have..." to "Thank you!" Yeah, the veggies and sauce were clearly pre-made and held in chafing dishes, but the chicken itself was also very freshly-cooked -- I watched as the cook grilled it! I drove home savoring the rich teriyaki smell and hesitantly offered my wife her order. We are both quite pleasantly surprised and impressed by this food! Okay, so next to the cash register there are chow mein noodles, fortune cookies, and almond cookies - very Chinese. But the main fare is some of the best Japanese-style teriyaki (chicken) that I've had since I left San Diego a dozen years ago! read more

Diamond in the rough! It's my first time here, and this place is 100x better than Yoshinoya. Good portions, and from what I can tell, good quality ingredients. Perfect post-gym meal! I would recommend ownership invest into better signage, though, so drivers on Los Angeles Ave. can see it. I found it because I was getting my tires rotated from Jim's and didn't want McDonalds. I been a client for 22 years . Their chicken crispy and juicy rice and steam vegetables . I love the hot garlic Sauce ( is not that hot) but full of flavor , the chili sauce that will clear you sinus but delicious . Last week I flew in from Chicago to LAX for a Food-service trade show in Anaheim and drove, in the rain, 45 minutes for this treat. And I would do it again! Having moved from Simi Valley in the later part of the last millennium, I have seriously been pining over this place for over this place for quite some time now and was so happy to see that it is still in operation. I think this place has been in business for over 20 years now. A testament to its customer base and loyalty. The menu is crazy simple and consists of just 2 sizes, Large and Small. That's it. A loaded large serving has got to be a solid 2 pounds of food. Into the large styrofoam container goes a bed of white rice. Followed by a layer of cooked vegetables such as cabbage and carrots (not sure if it is steamed or quick wok fried) leaving a bit of al-dente crunch to them. Then comes a selection of chicken, steak or shrimp or any combination of the 3. Just the mixed vegetables are also available. It is finished with a robust slathering of teriyaki sauce, garlic sauce, or both and maybe a bit of Szechwan sauce, if you like it spicy. That's pretty much it, simplicity at its finest. It's just variations on those combinations after that. Although, I see they have added noodles, effectively doubling their menu. And Bring CASH. They do not accept CC, but do have an ATM. You want a beverage? Here's your cup, soda is on the right... NEXT! I'm telling you it's just genius in its lean process. It's a 2 man operation at best and they just crank it out. It's like Seinfeld's Soup Nazi of Asian food only less rude. Not a lot of talking here. This is a working man's grub stop. Get it and go. We all got places to be. My last time at the Chicken Bowl in Simi Valley was over 15 years ago when I live there and made sales calls in LA and the surrounding area. It was so relaxing to come home after long drives from Victorville, Palm Springs and Barstow, just starving for a big, satisfying meal. I'd get home with a big ol' teriyaki chicken bowl of chicken, rice and spice and eat and then collapse. I am so pleased to see that it has remained the same, with the same hefty portions and deliciousness I remember. I also see that in 20 years the owners still don't know English very well. So there's not going to be much conversation. I was trying to compliment them on a job well done, but that convo just wasn't happening. I have only been here once and I was quite satisfied with my meal. I ended up getting the Beef with rice (though I asked for noodles, though the rice was a good choice overall) with Spicy Garlic Sauce. I ended up getting the small size which was about $7 or so. I really enjoyed this dish, however I wish they gave a few more veggies. The flavor wasn't too salty and the spiciness wasn't actually very spicy at all which was nice, had just enough flavor. Again, as many mentioned you need cash, they do have an ATM ($1.75 fee). They are quick to serve, I ended up waiting 2 minutes tops! (Tuesday afternoon). I can say I would come back here again if I am in the area as it is a bit far from me. read more

This place is awful! What are people raving about? Based on yelp reviews, we decided to come by for lunch one day. I got the chicken teriyaki bowl. The chicken and rice, jasmine...I think, was smothered in their teriyaki sauce which I think they just poured alllll over the bowl. Every little portion of my meal was covered in this overwhelmingly sweet teriyaki sauce. I typically like to add a little chili to my meals but because there was already too much teriyaki sauce everywhere I was afraid I'd turn the rice bowl into soup by adding chili. The grilled chicken was diced and wasn't marinated or seasoned at all. If it wasn't for the teriyaki sauce, it would've been super bland and dry. The service although fast, was rude. Typical I suppose of Asian places. Being Asian, I should really be used to rude service at Asian places....that being said, I am never coming here again. read more

We have eaten here before but it was about a year ago. I recall us liking it and that we had mentioned wanting to get the all meat or ala carte of the beef. We went last weekend after reading some mixed reviews. We got the Garlic Hot beef bowl with rice and the other beef steak bowl with rice. The flavors were ok. Not very rich. There was very little veggies. We got larges for both items and both times I had maybe two pieces of broccoli. The quality of the meat was abysmal. My husband gagged so hard he almost puked. He loves fatty pieces of meat but these pieces were un-chewable. Maybe it was just bad day but I don't think we'll ever be back again. This place was dying to try for the pictures look delicious but as I had ordered a variety of different bowls because the pictures look so great and scrumptious. As my family and I dug in the bowls it very disappointing it was bland couldn't taste the flavor whatsoever surprised I didn't put salt and pepper but don't think Chinese goes good with that. Wow... I don't know how this place is still in business or how people give this any higher than 2 stars. The food is disgusting. I was pretty hungry and couldn't force myself to take more than one bite. I haven't had food this bad in a LONG time. The sauce is bad. The meat is bad. The rice is bad. I ended up taking one bite, being disgusted and left and got dinner elsewhere. To be fair, the staff was nice. However that does not make up for how bad the food is. Went here with a group of friends last Friday for the first time. When I first saw this place, my expectations were not so high, but boy I was wrong. I was amazed at just how cheap the prices were for a bowl. Other places I've been to charge twice as much as they do here. I got the chicken bowl and not only did I get it in such a fast pace, but it was also great! The vegetables were sautéed just right, the rice was not mushy, and the chicken alongside the teriyaki sauce were amazing! The staff were also kind and friendly. This review has been a long time coming. I'm sorry that I didn't take a picture this time but I will write a following review with a picture attached. Anyways... Literally, literally; I've been eating at chicken bowl for over 10 years (I'm 30 as of 2019). I get the steak bowl with the sauce and garlic hot sauce. Their teriyaki and garlic hot sauce are out of this world and can't be matched. I've been fortunate in my life where I've traveled around the world and tasted many cuisines. I've dined at the hottest spots in LA (For example: Firefly, perch and the Edison). Chicken bowl is truly a diamond in the rough of Simi Valley. I've moved out of Simi but when ever I come back; chicken bowl is a must on my list. Try it. You won't be disappointed. However I do recommend that you get the sauce on the side so you can stir it up evenly. Bottom line; however long chicken bowl is open, I will go there to eat. I'm never disappointed and over the past 10 years, they have literally only gone up $1 in price. It went from $5 for a small bowl to $6. That's amazing. I'm a forever fan of chicken bowl! read more

Wow I'm shocked the place is literally called "chicken bowl" with a huge sign saying "chicken bowl" . So what did I order ? The chicken bowl how ever the chicken bowl it self was absolutely terrible the teriyaki sauce was just off as far as texture and flavor(the sauce it self was watered down and almost had a plain gravy taste with almost no sweetness) the rice in the bowl as-well was super soggy. "How could they mess up the rice !? " the chicken was terrible in texture combined with the sauce, overall terrible experience and I will never recommend this Restaurant. read more

There's a reason why every food joint that opens up next to this place goes out of business...Chicken Bowl has dominated this area since I've moved out to this area... Only drawback... Cash only...So in a pinch, your checkcard carrying friends will have to walk to Jack's or to an ATM... For a mere $5, you will get more than enough food to keep you full til your next feed... Chicken, steak, shrimp...I would recommend the chicken... White rice or noodles...I say noodles with steak, rice with everything else...Don't forget the vegetables.... I just found a reason to come to Simi! When driving through you totally need to stop at this spot! Very inexpensive, the taste is bomb. I got the shrimp and chicken noodle plate and my boyfriend got the chicken bowl. I'm a lover of noodles but when I go back I'm totally going to get the ball with rice the sauce is super delicious the staff is friendly it's a cool spot to get what you want quickly and have a lot of taste with it! I always say the hole in the wall spots serve up the best food and this is a complete example as to why! read more

Oh chicken bowl...this place brings back memories. When i was in high school a few years back, this was my lunch of choice. Whenever im back in the Simi area, this is a place that i cannot miss. The people who work here are really nice and if you go often enough they are pretty good about recognizing you so you can get in the habit of ordering your "usual." Now how cool is that :-P The best reason to come here is for the proportion of quality and price. The food here is just so good and their prices are so reasonable, its a slam dunk. Plus they have outdoor seating which is nice when your coming from San Francisco like i am. I can really enjoy the nice So-cal weather. I will say that as much as i love this place, the reason that i only gave it 4 stars, is because the only thing thats good on their menu is their chicken bowl. Ive had their beef bowl and a few other things on the menu and they are average at best. They also lose points for their cash only policy...thats not really that convenient.
