Let me begin by saying this review is about the location at 8300 N FM 620 in Austin. On most Friday nights, I can be found at Chicken Express in Lakeway. At this particular evening, it was almost closing time and stopped at this location since I was not going to make it to Lakeway before 10pm. Customer service was good. I waited an extra 7 or 8 minutes for chicken to be cooked. I got home with the chicken and well, pictures are worth a 1000 words. I immediately called this location and spoke to a manager named Juan Jose. When I explained the discoloration and offered the photos, he asked me how long it had been since I picked up the chicken. I told him maybe 30 minutes. HOWEVER, chicken does not become discolored in 30 minutes sitting in the box. After realizing that this conversation was going nowhere fast, I asked to for the owner's name which I was not given. Chicken Express has always gone over and beyond the average fast food place. This unfortunate incident does not make sense. read more

Decent location of a decent fried chicken chain. If you haven't tried Chicken Express, I'd call it a mix between a KFC's and a Popeye's, with a bit of Long John Silver's thrown in. This is a relatively new location, and I suspect that they're still ironing out kinks in their ordering/personnel system. The staff I dealt with were friendly enough, and the store was clean. However, it wasn't the fastest service (and I was one of only three people there!) and I had to come back to get one of the side items, which hadn't been put on the tray. This is perfectly serviceable fast food, not particularly inspiring or tender, when it comes to the chicken. I went with a set of Chicken Tenders which, while nice enough, weren't all that hot (again, that speed thing) and actually surprisingly chewy for 'tenders' The gravy's surprisingly decent and the biscuit okay, though I like KFC's take on it better. I also tried out the fried catfish, which again was decent but on the bland side compared to what I'm used to. So, on the whole, a decent place to stop at if you're passing by, I just can't see going out of my way to come here over, say, a KFC or a basket of home-cooked fried chicken. This place scores a 3 out of 5 on the 'CTJ Scale', as noted below. 5 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Jesus good. Would be OK passing away after finishing a plate here. 4 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Mary good. Would be OK being seen eating here by Mother Mary. 3 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Joseph good. Would be OK having a beer here with Jesus' Dad. 2 out of 5 stars: Come-to-the-Apostles good. Meh. Last week we got horrible service, but we let it go. This week shorter us on chicken. Not sure what is going on with them, but they did better when we were going through the worst part of COVID. My second time visiting this establishment was much like the first - five stars, all the way. From ordering (I know this sounds silly, but I had a lot of questions about the menu, and what would be considered "extra" requests at any other drive through) to the quality of the food (both times my okra was prepped and fried on order, WITH the explanation that it would take a little longer because of such), etc etc. I am so happy to have this spot right down the road from me on 620... this level of genuine customer service reminds me of home, aka Sweet Home Alabama. We've been fans of Chicken Express for years. They have the best bone in chicken in Texas. Their best item in our opinion was the "bone-in" spicy chicken wings. They were unique, awesome, and unavailable anywhere else. We recently discovered that Chicken Express has discontinued the "bone-in" spicy wings and substituted "boneless" wings under the same banner. Trust us , they are not the same. The new boneless version is just like all of their competition (like Burger King). Punched out pieces of white meat with breading with no character, unique flavor, or anything special like their original "bone-in" wings. Too bad. Sounds like a financial move. This is a review of the Fredericksburg, TX restaurant. We are huge fans of Chicken Express, and stop at their stores across Texas as we travel. We were very excited when a franchise opened here in our hometown. Unfortunately we have expereinced nothing but disappointment with the local store. Long waits in the drive in for simple meal orders, order mixups, and barely civil staff are the norm. A recent example: We were ordering a large meal so we phoned it in early, clearly specifying the time we would be by to pick it up. We arrived exactly at the designated time, only to discover that the order was not ready, and that they had not even started cooking some of the sides. After a 20 minute wait we finally left with our order. No apology, and and no aknowledgment of the inconvenience. There appeared to be a lot of people working, but little focus on the customer. There was a fellow walking around who seemed to be a manager, but he showed no interest in what was happening with my situation. I still love Chicken Express, and will stop at their other stores, but after 4-5 bad experiences over 2-3 years I will not visit the Fredericksburg outlet again. read more

This was my first time having chicken express and I wasn't disappointed. The place was pretty clean for the most part. The staff was very friendly. They also have tv's that are tuned into the sports channel for all the sport heads. The food was delicious as well. I got the chicken fingers with a side of fries and a dinner roll. The chicken was cooked perfectly and was really juicy. The fries were good too and the dinner roll was just oozing with glazed butter that made it so good. Overall a really nice place for something fast and tasty with a little bit of soul. I would definitely recommend this place to someone if they've never tried it and was curious. 8/10 read more

I don't know why people say the food is just okay b/c we have tried various places within Texas and beyond and always come back and know the food will be excellent. They have sports on tv and the news as well, the bathroom is clean and the employees seem to always be tidying up or asking how we're doing with our meal. This Chicken Express has been doing it right for years now. I've never had a problem, the service is always top notch, and the place is always squeaky clean - dining area, exterior, bathrooms, even the kitchen appears much cleaner than other fast food place from what I can see. I love their fried chicken liver and the manager told me that because they make each batch fresh that they are happy to take my order over the phone if I call ahead so that I don't have to wait at the restaurant for the 6 minutes or so that it takes to cook. I live just down the street and I have taken them up on this offer several times. Even if it's just one order of 6 chicken livers, they are happy to cook them up fresh so they are ready when I arrive. Now THAT is exceptional customer service. Thanks Chicken E! read more

I repeated my order 5 times. I sat in my car for over 20 minutes waiting for somebody to bring me my food. Finally went inside and waited another 5 minutes before anyone acknowledged me. Told them I had been sitting outside. Repeated my order for the 6th time, was handed a bag, cashier turned and walked away. Order still wasn't correct. Waited for cashier to return, didn't happen. Ended up just taking the incorrect order and leaving. Horrible customer service and absolutely no excuse for taking 30 minutes after placing an order to still not get what was ordered. Okay - To reuse the Dave Chappelle joke, it appears that I am predisposed to liking this place... because I seem to eat here a lot. Now that may be because I live close by (and not genetics), but I do eat here a lot... The Good - Customer Service. I can be a little bit of a smartarse when dealing with the the serving public (in a nice way), these folks go above and beyond with customer service. I wish I could give a name and tell you to see Rick, or Jane or Kevin, etc. but as a group these folks make consistently good choices to make your experience a win. The Food - as the name suggests, I eat the chicken (although my first time I had the catfish - Redunkulous!) - Sometimes there is a wait (breasts tend to run out fast because you can order them how you want; 3 breasts in a 3 piece meal for example). Always hot and crispy. The Store - been in a couple of times for pickup and the place STAYS spotless. The Meh - They run out of breasts alot - that is a good/bad thing. Good cuz you get FRESH chicken, bad because you gotta wait for it LOL. But to be honest, I would rather wait for fresh then have a limit/restriction placed on how I can order my 3 breast 3 piece meal (also known in my car as the Total Recall deal.... watch the movie kiddos, the original one) I will be back.... read more

So good. So very good. Fried chicken is my favorite food, so I was super excited to try a new chicken joint. CE didn't disappoint, the 4 tender basket was godlike. The tenders were good. Very nice breading - it stayed crunchy and crisp, but wasn't nearly as oily as a lot of fried foods tend to be. The roll that came with it reminded me of a Luby's roll (this is a good thing). I crammed two tenders in the roll and made my own glorious chicken slider. You can swap gravy for better sauces like honey mustard. That's what I did, and I'd recommend it. Their honey mustard is a little bit spicy, but pretty much the typical restaurant honey mustard that has perfect synergy with fried food. The only side I've tried is the corn nuggets. If this was at the state fair, it'd be called "Fried creamed corn". They're pretty awesome if you like corn, cause it's corn covered in liquid corn with corn breading, then fried (hopefully in corn oil). Finally, it comes in a box! I stopped off here last night and was definitely impressed. The staff here all were friendly and smiling. They insisted on bringing the orders out to their customers. My order of chicken tenders, fries, and a dinner roll were as good as I've had anyplace. Pro-Tip: If you don't want gravy, they have a variety of sauces as well. Two things really made this location shine. Unlike a lot of their other locations, the drinks are accessible to the customers. If you want to refill your tea or soft drink, it's completely self-serve. Second, the condiment area is incredible -- a variety of sweeteners, lemon packets, ketchup, salt, pepper, seasoned salt, spicy seasoned salt, honey, and Texas Pete hot sauce packets are all available -- and organized. I stopped by for the first time today after reading the glowing reviews on here... Maybe that's why I ended up so disappointed? I pulled up to the drive through at about 9:10 on a Friday night; maybe that's what I did wrong? Perhaps earlier would have been better. The ensuing conversation went something as follows: Drive-thru Guy - "No ice?" Me - "Correct. No ice." DtG - "Okay, and would you like a biscuit or a roll with that?" Me - "Oh, um, a roll, I guess?" DtG - "Oh, sorry, we're actually out of rolls. Would you like a biscuit?" Me - "Er, no thanks. But, can I also get an order of fries, but cooked extra crispy?" DtG - "An order of fries and what?" Me - "Extra crispy?" DtG - "What?" Me - "Extra crispy?" DtG - "Oh! Of course! Your total will be [blah], please pull around!" I proceeded to pull around to the window, paid, and then was handed my drink. It had ice. I accepted that I had made a few special requests, and I'm a very non-confrontational person (also that's something that's pretty frequently messed up when I order it), so I let it go. I was then handed my food. I opened the box to check it, and everything seemed to be in order, so I drove off. While sitting at a light not too far off (like a minute away), I decided to have a fry. I'm not sure if myself and the cook have vastly different opinions of what "extra crispy" means, or if they simply forgot to cook them that way, but they were definitely not crispy fries. They were a bit soggy, which is the opposite of what I wanted :(. All that said, the chicken tenders were pretty good, and the cheese sticks were okay. But, considering the biscuit/roll incident and the two mistakes on an order that only had four parts to begin with? I do not believe I'll be returning to this establishment. read more

Personable, professional and efficient, I HAVE NEVER SEEN SUCH A CLEAN BATHROOM EVER IN A FAST FOOD RESTAURANT in my life and I'm 62 years old. It's their goal to check it out every 30 minutes!!
