Chikugo-En has the highest quality coniferous bonsai in the area. The selection of junipers is varied from pre-bonsai to full museum quality works. From the moment I walked in, Gary (the owner) was there to provide helpful insight into the various types of bonsai and to offer advice on styling / caring for each tree. He is a true master of the art, and it shows in the quality of his products. Unlike other larger nurseries I've been to, Gary takes time to personally work on every plant he sells. If you're new to bonsai, Gary does offer workshops every other Thursday 8am - 12pm. He also offers a Sunday workshop, but that has been booked for years due to the sheer amount of bonsai enthusiasts who come to seek his advice. Inside the main shop, he also has many of the tools and supplies you need. He carries soil components (Kanuma / Akadama / pumice / lava rock), fertilizers, yoshiaki bonsai tools, pots, and all sorts of good stuff. For the more advanced bonsai enthusiast, Gary has bonsai stock at all stages of development. Of particular note are his shimpaku juniper (seamlessly grafted with stronger roots) and procumbens nana juniper. He's put a lot of work into styling and developing specific bonsai with elegant trunklines and branch structures. Walter Pall once called this "one of the best nurseries I have ever had the pleasure to visit" [see Walter's Travelogues Dec 9 2009). That should tell you all you really need to know. In short, if you want quality, come see Gary. Some things to know: 1) Parking is limited. You can either park at one of the few spaces in front of the entrance or on the street. 2) Cash only.

For the best Bonsai, I would encourage you to buy from Chikugo. Gary Ishii is the best. His knowledge of the Art of Bonsai and his true love for the plants are unmatched. From the special soil to the treated pure water, the Bonsai are premier.

Came around 1130am on a Saturday. Yelp said it was open but the gate was closed and it didn't look like it was open. ‍

Beautifully crafted bonsai trees. They are museum quality and expensive. I just need to find "the One" for my home.

It's my new go-to shop when I'm having one of my "crazy plant lady" moments or even when I'm not. I have loads of experience maintaining my favorites: orchids, African violets, peperomia, and calathea. They're what I consider no-brainer plants - once you get a groove with watering, light and caring for these beauties, they thrive for years and years. Getting the groove however, well that's the secret. I spent a healthy sum of money on orchids for my orchid/sunroom. Learning how to care for and grow them took me a couple years, but these daya I can confidently say, I've perfected my process in my microclimate. I love that Deep Roots sells what I need to make me happy and keep my pets safe. Their phalenopsis orchids are tall with big, beautiful blooms. They have several varieties of calathea and peperomia...they're so healthy and lovely, they look like faux plants! Want to brighten someone's day? Any plant here will do just that! Service is smart too. Have questions or need help? The staff here is super knowledgeable. Purchase a plant and pot, they'll pot it up for you for free. This is especially awesome when you need something last minute, think house warming or hostess/host gifts! Love that Deep Roots moved in the neighborhood. I found out about this place after driving down Hawthorne blvd and actually read the store name. Since I drive the street regularly, I never read the store names. They have lots of plants and feel like they have more variety than home depot. They have colorful potteries and various shapes and sizes. They laid out their plants and accessories super neatly! There's lots of parking in the back and sometimes Hawthorne blvd gets backed up so might be hard to get out of the parking lot. Will be coming back for more plants for my office cubicle!

They have a nursery here and they have a very wide selection of plants! I'd say they're known for their variety of staghorn ferns and air plants but they also have monsteras and other popular house plants. Everything is priced very reasonably. This is a great place to get gifts for friends and family. They are very professional and helpful. They're very patient and answered all my questions when it came to taking care of my staghorn fern. I loved mine so much that I came back a few weeks later to pick up a second one. One of the best things about this place is their koi ponds! They have two inside! You can buy fish food for $3 and feed them at your leisure. It's perfect for kids. For those who own staghorn ferns, they also help with remounting them when they get too big but you'll need to contact them directly and see if the service is available.
