My family visited Chilango's this past Sunday and was very disappointed. It was around 7:30pm and were seated quickly. Our dinners, Chimichanga with chicken very big and extremely dry, the Mexican rice was hard, was not sure if it was uncooked or dried out and the refried beans were "just not right" lacked flavor. The chips & salsa was good, and the most delicious item on my dinner plate was the guacamole/onion/pepper side. Either there was a spill earlier in the evening but the floors were slippery as if mopped with a greasy mop. We have visited the restaurant periodically over the last 3 years and it seems it is just not the same. Not sure if I will go back! read more

The food had zero flavor and our waitress never checked on us to see if we needed anything. Also, I have no idea where they got their prices from, but a quesadilla was 22$, the same price as a steak entree. I now live in Manhattan, and I have to say, I can't get fresh, authentic Mexican as good as Chilango's. Leo, the owner and chef, is gifted both inside and outside of the kitchen. His food is amazing, and he is also a class act when interacting with his guests. The pork wings are incredible, they fall right off the bone, and the sopes are flavorful. There was special chicken enchilada that night featuring Leo's mother's Green Mole sauce, and let me tell you, it was like crack! I couldn't stop eating it. I would recommend Chilango's to anyone and everyone, and can't wait to bring my friends from Manhattan to Jersey for a fun night (there are 170 tequilas in house) on the Jersey shore! read more

First Visit ... went on a Friday evening. Place was packed. Chilango's seems to be a pretty cool place for Mexican food and Tequila on the Northern Jersey Shore. Went with the family; so ordered some pretty standard Mexican dishes - Fajitas, Chimichangas and Burritos. The dishes were all flavorful. The M'rita definitely was fine; good tequila. I had the vegetarian burrito and it was super good, nice mix of fresh veggies- not that I got to eat much of it because I was busy slugging chips and salsa which were great! I must have come on a bad night as have always enjoyed dining here. We arrived a little early and were only the second table occupied. It took 20 minutes to get a margarita I had ordered and seemed to be a powered mix as opposed to what I remember from the past. One hour later 3 of our four meals arrived. After another 15 minutes after asking the waitress and hostess 3 times if there was a problem - with no follow up responses except "what were you again" the 4th meal finally arrived. In fairness the place was mobbed when meals were served and we were told waitress was a trainee but seemed like waitress and hostess could have cared just a little bit. read more

So we had ants in our food and one of our drinks. The server explained that "it happens." We waited 40 minutes for our drinks and another 35 minutes for dinner. That's over an hour before any food. Wish we left because the food was terrible. Service and food both fail. read more

Simply the best Mexican restaurant on the East coast... It even feels Mexican with the Mexican tv shows playing on the tv set over the bar. I live a few blocks away, and I've eat Chilango's food many, many times (take-out on occassion)... I never get sick of it, and my mouth always waters voraciously before I bite into their dishes of Mexican heaven. I am a Mexican Food self-imposed critic having lived in the Southwest for many years and have a Mexican-American daughter-in-law whose whole family could be millionaires if they opened a Mexican Restaurant in the Northeast. First I must say, a Chimichanga is an Americanized deep fried burrito. It is NEVER made with ground beef. There is your RED FLAG. There is either a green or a red sauce which generously smothers the deep fried burrito as soon as it comes into the plate. A nice amount of shredded lettuce which may have a few other salad ingredients but it is not necessary is along side of the burrito. A generous side of sour cream and guacamole is also served and in a really good Mexican restaurant you can forego the rice and beans which if you are not a rice and beans lover and it saves you a few dollars. That all said, we drove from New York City to try Chilango's in Highlands, NJ. A steak fajita and a Chimichanga was our order. The fajita arrived and the steak was very strange looking. It didn't take long to realize it was totally inedible. It was pure grizzle. We tried a few pieces but gave up and told the waitress it was inedible. She took it back without a qualm. The Chimi was exactly as one previous poster said. The tortilla was nothing but thick mush and it tasted like bland dog food. A smidgen of tomato sauce was visible, but it was on the beans instead of the Chimi. About 1/2 a teaspoon of sour cream and 1/2 teaspoon of what they called guacamole was atop the thickly sliced lettuce. The strange thing is that they are opening another Chilangos in Keansburg. If as another poster said if there was a minus rating it would be a minus 5 on a 1 to 5 scale. Bottom Line...do not expect to find good Mexican food outside of California, Arizona, New Mexico or Texas in the United States. It just isn't there. read more

Only in NJ does something like this happen! My sister, Mom and I have wanted to try Chilango's for a while. We got there on Fri at noon and was surprised to see the Closed sign. WELL, how fortunate for us that the owner Leo rode by the restaurant to drop something off. He insisted that we come in and he made us lunch keeping the closed sign up. I live in CA but am a Jersey girl and I have never tasted better flautas. My sister's chimichanga was outstanding and my Mom's grilled shrimp quesadilla done to perfection. The chips that Leo made for us were hot and tasty and the guacomole also outstanding. After our lunch Leo brought out his favorite tequila to try on the house. Is this guy amazing or what? I am not a tequila person but I rolled it back out of respect for Leo...and it was quite smooth. Great great experience. Thank you Leo for an opportunity to tell a good Jersey story. I live in the area and have tried this place every 6 months or so. I usually go into red bank for Mexican but it is cold and I needed something fast. I love Mexican food because it has flavor. I have tried many items on the menu and everything is bland! Tons of boiled chicken and tasteless meat but not spices or typical Mexican taste. Maybe they cook for an audience that does not like spice. Additionally we had two margaritas at the bar while we waited and our take out was over $50 for 2. The atmosphere is nice and friendly. But I am totally out. No more attempts to find something good on the menu. I am sticking with red bank. read more

Went for the first time this week. Slightly confused by the inconsistency of the food. Ordered the pork wings appetizer and it was amazing. Avocado soup was good too but really heavy. I ordered the Chilango Burrito and my friend ordered the burrito marinero. My friend's burrito was great but mine was incredibly bland. The chicken inside wasn't seasoned at all. The menu says chicken was marinaded but it was definitely not. Rice and beans were okay (a little bland too). Said it came with sour cream and guac and it had about a minuscule teaspoon of each on each plate. Took half of my burrito home and the next night I opened it up and it was straight up white chicken... no seasoning, no sauce, no cheese, nothing. I don't understand that. I ended up reconstituting it on the stove with spices and peppers. I would go back and try the place again but I wasn't super impressed. read more

Hadn't been in along time and can't figure out why. Great food that beats any sit down mexican in the area, including Red Bank. Had the Santa Monica Enchiladas. Chicken and Oaxaca cheese with a fantastic Passilla sauce. Churros were great and the house made salsa is still the best. Get anything with thier Mole or Chipotle sauce. Only problem is they changed the floor plan and expanded the bar. It's now much louder than it used to be. read more

The worst Mexican restaurant I've ever been to. Bad food,bad drinks, bad environment. The margaritas had tonic water in them? Very strange in a bad way. It's very sad that the only reason this place is still open is because they have a liquor license. Even the bartender couldn't make a decent cocktail. No beer on draft either, so I stuck with water. Food was all bland- Rice, beans, and burrito. Very stingy on the chips and salsa and the restaurant is so claustrophobic that the patron behind me accidentally touched me trying to wrap his arm around the lady next to him. read more

Service isn't great. Wasn't very packed and was about 20 minute wait to get the check. Actually 20 minute wait for everything- ordering food, drinks etc. Outside tables stink now that it's enclosed. The food isn't anything to rave about. I loved this place about 4 years ago and now it's just really plain and boring. Finally made it to Chilangos before our move out to San Diego where great Mexican food will def not be hard to come by. I am still trying to figure out good Mexican food to not so good Mexican food so I may not be the best judge of this delicacy but the thoughts from my 3 guests were that they were more than satisfied with their meals: flautas, chicken chimichanga, and the fajita mariscada. As always, at every Mexican restaurant, I get the chicken enchiladas---10 yrs ago I had the best chicken enchilada at some LA hole in the wall, Mexican restaurant and I've been on the hunt for some good enchilada which my tastebuds still have not been able to find---even at Chilangos. I will say though, loved my strawberry daquiris, the guac, and chips and salsa. The prices are very reasonable too---for the 4 of us, the bill came to $121 + tip. Wasn't as impressed with the tres leche as with the previous Yelpers were---it was just wet cake to me. read more

Really good Mexican food!! Last time I went I sat at the bar and the bartenders( I wish I remember her name) was so sweet and on top of her game!!! The mango margaritas are smooth, strong and to die for! Everything on the menu is so fresh and flavorful!! I want to go back right now! Came here with family for dinner. It was extremely noisy and crowded. The food came out fast and the service was good. I had a vegetable burrito without the tortilla. It wasn't very good because it barely had any flavor. If you want Mexican I would recommend Los papagallos, señor peppers, or Juanitos instead. read more

My wife and I have been to this classic (and one of the best) Mexican restaurants in Monmouth County several times. The bartenders know how to make the perfect margarita-they should because their selection of tequilas is amazing. Service is quick, chips and salsa are great-don't eat too many as you won't have room for dessert. After our 5th/6th visit, one of the regulars recommended the "pork wings". OMG thank you for that recommendation. We have ordered them as our appetizer since then. Try the empanadas-they are a meal as an appetizer. Extensive selection on menu and the specials change frequently. The place does a great business as every time we have been there it has been packed. They also seem to do a great take out business. The size of the restaurant is small but we have heard rumors that they may be expanding. We haven't had a chance to order dessert yet as we have been completely full and more times than not, we are taking a portion of our entree home to have for lunch the next day. If you like excellent Mexican food with the most extensive selection of tequilas and at a reasonable price with good service, Chilango's is muy bueno. read more

not happy! Had reservations for 6 on a Thursday night. They gave away our table. We were there right on time. Took 20 minutes to seat us. They had a couple move their table so they could make room for us. Drinks took awhile. Service was terrible. A person at our table asked for more water. Did not appear.... She went to bar to ask for water and the bartender told her the server has to get it! Really? The sangria was okay, but the pitchers sat on the bar for a long long time before we got them. The classic burrito was HUGE, but only had what seemed like boiled shredded chicken in it. No sides, no cheese, guac etc. The empanada according to the menu said two, but one guest was served one large one that was not fully cooked. My husband and I love Mexican food and this place, in our opinion, is one of the best. The ingredients are always fresh - you must have the salsa! The cilantro gives it a great taste. The Chilango Burrito is huge and is enough for two meals. We also love the Chimichangas, Margaritas and Tres Leches cake. Every time we have family or friends visit, we always take them here.
