This place gets a lot of good reviews but then also saw a few one stars also. I didn't know what to expect but glad I had a great experience here. I was up in Taos for Saturday and chose to stay upstairs of this restaurant for the night. This place is about 45 min from Taos proper. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The upstairs studio was nice, and has nice views of the area.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The property also has a hot tub, but I didn't use it.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] There isn't much out in Tres Piedras, but this place makes up for it. Also great view of the night sky. I spied a beautiful moon from upstairs. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Dogs are allowed here and ample parking available.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Ice also for sale here. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Nice, outdoor patio space too.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Staff here were really nice and I had 3 people constantly check in on me. I had a margarita and a beer and my total came to $8. Chips and salsa were on the house. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It was also really wonderful to hang out on Saturday night to hear the live music. Gary Reynolds was the musician and he was excellent![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They also had all sorts of fresh baked goods for sale, pies and even smudge sticks for sale here. Is iced beer a thing? --Maybe, if you're the only game in town A disappointment on every level. Waited a long time for service despite not many folks present at lunch. I was hungry--on a camping trip--and hoping for some great Frito Pie...but as soon as the guac and chips showed up, I knew it was all going wrong. The chips were a few days too old, and the sad squeeze of store-bought guac tasted mostly of salt and oil. I was told the staff had "forgotten" to put the beer in the fridge, but helpfully (?) also provided a cup of ice to pour it over. I had not known we did that. When it eventually arrived, the Frito Pie had been sitting so long that the Fritos were soggy little flaps. The chili was just beans, no beef, and completely lacking in flavor--no cumin, no garlic, no tomato, nothing you'd reasonably expect. And either no red Hatch chile, or so little as to make no difference. It tasted like it came from a large can. The toppings, pale tomatoes and a few wisps of salad, didn't add anything. I'm not saying it's easy to make Frito Pie, but it's not rocket surgery. I've had it all over the state, and never mind SF Plaza-quality...this is hands-down the worst from Aztec to Zuzax. read more

On the Saturday evening before Memorial Day (2023), my crew popped in the Chili Line Depot for an unexpected supper after a long day hanging out by the nearby Rio Tusas. It's located about a 40-minute drive from the Colorado state border in Tres Piedras, NM. Not much else is around. There was a table available for our party of 4. We sat a few tables away from the live three-member band of the night: Propspero. They were good. Played classics by Pink Floyd, The Beatles, etc. The food while served hot was a bit bland plus it took quite a while to come out. When it did, our party was not all served at once. My significant other was not upset, but I don't like it one bit when my group isn't served all at once. For starters, we were given complimentary chips and salsa. The chips were hot and fresh. The salsa was not blended, but more like a chunky, chopped mixture. I had the Pancho's Frito Pie with a sunny side egg added. It was "corn chips smothered in red or green chile, beans, and melted cheese. Served with a side of salsa, lettuce, tomato, and a dollop of sour cream." As you can tell from my photos, it was all in one large bowl. Mine, however, was missing the dollop of sour cream. Probably because of the egg I had to have. Lol. My iced coffee was good and strong. I never received a receipt for our meal, so I'm unsure of prices for everything and of course I don't remember what everyone else in my group ordered. Lol. Our main waitress was very friendly and apologetic when it took so long for the food to come out - and again when her boss said they no longer honored the Yelp checkin deal for "1 free baked dessert - available with an order of one (1) entree." Still, she insisted that my children take a few cookies home on her tab. I told her not to do that, but she was trying her best to make amends with me I'm sure. There is minimal free parking out front with some additional spots on the north side. There are some fairly steep stairs leading to the actual restaurant. Inside is some cool train depot decor, outdated maps and other old items. There was a lone restroom that was mostly clean considering how many men were there that night. My significant other's family sometimes picks up green chile burgers from this place. I will opt for that next time as they claim it to be the best item on the menu. Kind staff, but Deb is terrible. Wait for this to be open, hours wrong online. Went to check it out. Had met an employee there so went to stop by on my way to do something. They weren't open for dinner, so planned to come the next day. There were cars out front so I stopped after I already had lunch to find out if they were open. This was the day before their Facebook said they were opening and apparently they had been. Open a week, no sign, inaccurate online hours. ( I'd been curious and asked when I was in Taos to which I heard such things as the food making people sick and apparently someone who worked there prior warning about Deb and saying the farm to table claim is questionable and it comes frozen, since I had prior at Carson met the cook and they said wonderful things I was looking forward to trying it) I love Reubens its a go to where ever I travel especially if different and brisket. So, claiming a farm to table Rueben had me excited. Like I'd had a Bison one in Chautauqua Dining hall in a prior years travels. Employee asks if I could use a shower as I'd been camping. Declined at first, didn't want to be impolite when they said don't worry about it. Go over to where they are and Deb goes off on me, how much it pissed her off her hard working employee paid for my shower. Like one, they know I can afford a shower because I'm on my way to look at property, hence meeting them and talking. For another thing to pretend you charging people, many whom don't have access to running water $6 for a shower is charity of some sort shows the kind of person you are. Your employee who is so nice, brought you business and even offered something nice you apparently charged them for and your bad attitude ruined all of it. Ended up waiting and eating a locally sourced sandwich in Chama. I had about $120 in my pocket so if you were cash only wasn't an issue either. If that wasn't icing on the cake after my previous review on another site I get a gem of a response I attached. Yeah Deb it's my fault your hours or wrong, I ate lunch on my way and didn't even know you would be actually open and not for dinner of all hours. At least I got a shower out of 3 visits, 2 closed and one meeting and getting a lecture from the notorious DEB. read more

The chili cheeseburger and fries were absolutely delicious. Tasted fresh from the garden and/or ranch. . The chips and dip also excellent with fresh ingredients. To top it off try the apple, chili, pinon pie. The service was outstanding . Cassandra made us (my dog too) feel welcome and our visit special. Love this place. The owner is colorful, at times volatile, but she's got a heart of gold and she's very proud of her food and business. The best green chile in the state! Local meat and buns for the burger, fresh toppings and cooked perfectly every time. The fries are cut thick and single-fried so they aren't real crispy. My dad made them that way, so I love them! The elk stew special was to die for. Don't sleep on their reuben either. Deb is a nasty piece of work. She is abusive, not credible and a miserable gossip about customers/staff. Every time that she walks in, she harasses the staff and finds something new to complain about (to staff/customers). Many have told her to retire/sell/close or turn it over to the staff that she has abused all these years. (Her husband is very nice but does little around the restaurant.) The food is not "farm to table", the restaurant workers are underpaid and overworked, and [[HIGHLIGHT]]the restaurant/beds are not clean.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Time for this miserable place to close. The food is farm to table. The owners have a ranch and use their products as much as possible. The Ruben sandwich is yummy as is the green chile cheese burger. The service is very local because the community is very small. On Saturday there is free music from area local musicians from 6-?. Chips and salsa are free during the music. The owners also have accommodations upstairs or on their ranch with two tipis. The hours and days open vary so call if you are making this a destination dining experience. Stopped on the way through with a load of hay. Was originally just going to get something to go, but it was a lovely evening, so we stayed to eat. Sat down and was immediately provided with chips and homemade salsa - fantastic!! I ordered the lasagna special, and my partner had the BBQ. Both were cooked fresh and absolutely delightful. If you are ever passing through Tres Piedra, I highly recommend stopping here. We stopped by and what a wonderful surprise. They offered takeout due to Covid virus and were very busy. Everyone around was very friendly and helpful with the menu. This little food joint near the border of New Mexico and Colorado serves the freshest burger with the most amazing service. The burgers that they use are actually from a farm a few miles down the road that they own! The patty is juicy, tender, and thick. Had a really great meal here and enjoyed the food on the outdoor patio. Very casual vibes and our server had good tips about the menu and what they were out of at the time. The four of us ended up with one of the burritos (pulled pork with pinto beans, well seasoned with lots of cheese, sour cream, chili, fresh lettuce and tomatoes on the side), a burger with fries, frito pie, extra fries, drinks, and a couple slices of pie. Portions were really generous, produce was fresh and crispy, and they conveniently split the dishes into separate plates when we mentioned we were all sharing. The Depot is simply crazy-good! Never mind that almost everything is home made starting with the hamburger buns, thru potato salad and cole slaw to other things. Never mind that the beef and pork come from the owners' ranch just down the street. Never mind that the veggies are locally grown. IT'S THE PIES! The apple is cosmically wonderful. Right amount of cinnamon, fruit not overcooked, crust is incomparable! My wife says no, the WINE MARGARITAS are the best. Who would have thought.
