It had been around six or seven years since I dined at the Chilitos restaurant on South Valley Drive so I thought it was time to revisit the place to see how things might have changed. In recent years I have ventured over to the Chilitos on Foothills since I considered that restaurant tp have a nicer atmosphere and food. What I found at the South Valley Chilitos was a much nicer restaurant than the one I remembered. Inside it was bright, open, and had a lot of hard wood furniture and some comfortable booths. The ambiance was actually quite nice. Upon entering I was immediately greeted by a hostess and led to a table. A waitress was at my table with a menu and a basket of tortilla chips with salsa within a couple minutes. Overall, the service today was very efficient. So far, everything was better than I remembered from years ago. (I would also add that the parking situation is much better than parking at the Foothills location.) Today I ordered the SOPAPILLA COMPUESTA with one half red chile con carne and the other half green chile. The meal was prepared and on the table within eight minutes. The chips were somewhat hard and not the most flavorful. Rate them a "B-." The salsa was a bit high on the heat and not very flavorful. Rather mediocre salsa. Rate it a "C." In my opinion, it was not as good as the salsa served at the Foothills locations. The sopapilla compuesta, on the other hand, was very good. The pastry was fried perfectly...it was light and not chewy and not overcooked. The chile, both red and green, was very tasty. The entire production was upper level New Mex cuisine. While not perfect it rated about an "A-." The price I might add was quite reasonable. All in all, a filling and enjoyable meal. So, at the end of the day, rate the overall dining experience at Chilitos on South Valley FOUR AND A QUARTER STARS. If you go you will find a clean, comfortable and pleasant ambiance, better than average service, and very good New Mex food at a reasonable price. I would argue that this Chilitos now ranks in the top eight or ten among Mexican food restaurants in the Las Cruces area (and that is out of around 85 establishments!) read more

Portion Size is a Joke Ordered takeout, the Chile Con Carne Plate (no sides) for $15.99. The portion was shockingly small, a tiny scoop, maybe 1/4 cup total. For that price, it's a complete rip-off. I expected a meal, not a single bite. If you want enough food to feel satisfied, look elsewhere. Very disappointed. read more

Its good when the chefs want it to be good. Sometimes food doesn't have enough salt or the fajitas are too greasy. When done right the fajitas are great. So is the smothered meat patty w green chile. Waters are friendly and helpful. Shirts are cool but too expensive. read more

Visiting LC for my nephew's graduation, we ate here for breakfast. Unfortunately I was so hungry forgot to take pics but we had the Huevos Con Carne, red and green. They were delicious but the red was outstanding! Our waitress was working her butt off as she was the only one there. I overheard her say the other person didn't show up. Then later that day at my nephews party, we ate there red chile enchiladas! They were amazing also. Love the decorated Christmas tree in the restaurant. read more

Please listen to the people who pay your salary and eat your food. Communication is key, so lets start there, salsa should not be that hot without making your patrons aware of it. This has become our go to Mexican place in town. Why? Because of the green chile con carne. Lord! It's the best in town. Heaping serving and perfectly spiced. Your abuela would be proud to serve this. Get it. And ask for an extra tortilla. Salsa and chips ALWAYS spot on. Beer and adult beverages available. Servers are pleasant and quick. The fajitas are still high on my list of choices. Love how they are served with all the sides in a tower. Takes up so much less space on the table. Smart! I love this place. I've been coming here for years on my travels when I come through Las Cruses. You gotta try the Burrito Ranchero. It's filled with pork and green chili stew. This remains one of our favorite spots to eat when in Las Cruces. The service is always friendly and prompt, the restaurant is very clean, and the food has real flavor. Every dish we have ordered, from the Carne Asada tacos to the green chicken enchiladas to their wonderful breakfast plates have been well-prepared and full of flavor. Wow what a hidden gem ! Well I guess not exactly hidden...its right off the interstate. The salsa they give with the chips is amazing ! Its just hot enough, but also very tasty. I have mixed feelings about this place. The food was just ok. I feel it was lacking some flavor, it was kind of bland. . But with that being said, it was still good. You did get a good portion size. While visiting Las Cruces for an overnight stay we enjoyed a delicious meal! We were greeted by a very friendly young lady who also served as our waitress! Enjoyed the delicious fresh guacamole served with locally made chips! WONDERFUL!! Frozen house margaritas served in cool clay mugs kept the drinks frozen and yummy! This if our last night in town and I guess I just picked the wrong place for us. i can only say the beer was cold and the sopapilla was delicious! I mean extra delicious and the only restaurant that actually served real honey at the table from a syrup dispenser NOT a packet. That in and of itself earned an entire star! Very nice is that They offer an impressive selection of beers both on tap and in bottles and turned my husband on to a New Mexican beer fave! Chips were very rustic and thick and while the salsa was hot, I was not overly impressed with the flavor. I couldn't decide on Chile rellanos or gorditas so I ordered a la carte, one of each. My Gordita was good but was soggy due to being placed on the same plate as my rellano. I didn't care for their rendition of rellano. One (bite) and done. It just didn't do it for me and they are one of my favorite NM dishes. I didn't care for my husband's beef fajitas at all. I don't know what cut of meat they used but it was overcooked and the taste came off as overly "limey." My husband said it was good in the flour tortilla (which are palm sized). I'm wondering if my taste buds were just off today as nothing really appealed to me except the beer and the sopapilla . The young waitress was friendly and competent but not knowledgeable about the food. It was not terribly busy but appeared to attract locals. I guess I should insert here that we are undoubtedly food snobs but enjoy everything from James Beard awarded chefs to food trucks... We are equally picky across the board but we are just as critical of what we turn out of our own kitchen. Sometimes we fail but mostly we do not. If not for the fact that we lived in NM for almost 10 years and have an entire chest freezer of green chilies put up every season, make our own Chile powders and regularly turn out authentic NM dishes from our own kitchen, I may never eat NM food again. If I'd never had it before, i may never eat it again. I am so turned off at our samplings this trip. Just done. Another $65 down the hatch. read more
