See lots of cars here, thought maybe is missing something so mom and I finally made it in. Came for breakfast, immediately noticed there was nothing on the menu I wanted, she wanted biscuits and gravy. She asked the waitress the gravy is house made, waitress looked perplexed and said yes, my mom clarified "not from a package or can?" Waitress responded"no" was not confident seeming so my mom told her she is watching her salt intake curious if the sausage is brown and serve or cooked there on spot , the prices are high for Sysco pre made food so anyhow food comes out , sausage obviously brown and serve and gravy is white as paper and obviously not house made. Despite the number of positive reviews here on Yelp, I would definitely not recommend this restaurant. I ordered the soup, and was appalled at what was served to me: tinny-tasting chicken broth with vegetables that looked like they were poured out of a can and sliced spaghetti noodle chunks. No flavoring to speak of. My husband ordered a burger with a salad, which was salad from a bag. After that, we decided not to order the pie, which, when I looked at it on the way out, did not look homemade. This was not an inexpensive restaurant for what you get. This place always has a full parking lot. We finally found a day to stop in for lunch. We learned that Tuesday's special is a Reuben and very popular. We ordered that and a cold meatloaf sandwich. The Reuben was nicely grilled and with melty cheese. The fries were ok, plain. The green salad included with the special was huge. I really like the Chimacum Cafe. It's that classic greasy spoon American diner. So a quick note about my rating...on a global scale it I give it 3ish. It's good but there's certainly better (higher end) places out there. However, my expectations are different based on the type of place I'm going. So if this is being judged on the greasy spoon scale, I'd give it a solid 4+. It has everything you'd expect...gossiping waitresses (sit at the bar...yeah like an actual old school bar), just ok but always fresh and hot coffee (they never let you empty the cup), legitimate mid century decor (as in original...not just retro to be cool), mounds of soft butter, and most importantly really solid classic american food. I love stopping in after a cold morning fishing in the area, but we've also driven up from Bremerton just for breakfast. In short, if you like classic greasy spoon diners, this place is on point. read more

The menu has not changed much from 1980 when we first went there to eat. Their vegetarian menu is a frozen veggie patty from a box or a veggie sandwich consisting of lettuce, tomato, onion & maybe a few slices of cucumber. Stopped by the Chimacum Cafe on an Easter Sunday ride with six other bikes. We were cold: temps were in the low 50s and it was overcast and damp, and they gave us a cheery welcome and hot coffee all around. They had a ham special, but none of us ordered it. Most of the guys were virtuous and had salads, which came with a cup of their home-made cream of turkey soup, which by all accounts was very good. I had fish and chips which came with a large serving of coleslaw made with purple cabbage, both cocktail sauce and tartar sauce, and ice cream which I redirected to the next child who wanted it. There were so many fries that all the virtuous salad eaters had some and there were still leftovers. In fact, the portions were prodigious and nobody cleaned their plate. The fish was breaded, not battered: the only downside. Good down home American cafe food and no one went home hungry. read more

After a nice weekend of camping my wife and I had the hankering for some diner food. We have eaten at the Chimacum Cafe in the past and it has been decent. This time was an entirely different story. After sitting we proceeded to wait for someone to acknowledge our existence and the place wasn't even busy. Once we got some service we ordered our food, pancakes and two scrambled eggs. I will agree with another poster that the pancakes are indeed big but bigger doesn't mean better. They tasted really boring, kind of like cafeteria style food. The eggs were the same way, no seasoning, rubbery and with a slight green hue. One bite and I was done with them. I seriously doubt I'll be back anytime soon since this experience was pretty disheartening. Blargh. read more

Ok, so the decor is pretty shabby and outdated, but still charming nonetheless. Excellent breakfast, and usually very friendly service. Sometimes a little slow because of under-staffing, but the servers work their tails off and they don't forget that you're sitting there waiting. Gigantic HALF salad and most dressings are home made. Dinner is a little less satisfying (canned or frozen veggies mix is kind of mushy and flavorless,) but overall, it's a nice little home town diner. I've been wanting to eat here for almost 30 years! I finally got the chance and it was disappointing. My wife had the fruit plate for lunch, the waitress tried to talk us out of it, but due to diet restrictions, she ordered it. It was $10.95! For an apple, orange, kiwi and a banana. We were told melons were hard to come by and too expensive. There was a fruit stand across the street! My lunch "special" gave me food poisoning, so I was in agony for the next few hours. I'm afraid to say that I probably won't be back. The waitress was super friendly and helpful though... I wished it was better, I'm all for supporting local commerce, especially restaurants! We think the taco salad is the best we have ever had. It may not be "authentic" but the seasoning is superb. This is a destination comfort food cafe for some folks. It is very traditional, and they do serve canned vegetables. The soup is always good; I especially like their "taco soup" when it is offered. (soups change daily) The servings are ample. We're big fans of Chimacum, and stop by every time on our way out to the Olympic Peninsula! The pie is the best part of Chimacum Cafe (get it with ice cream) but it's also a great spot to grab a hearty breakfast at a great price. Stopped in for lunch the other day and we weren't as excited about that food as we are about the pie and breakfast. Nonetheless, it remains one of our favorite diners and deserves at least one visit from everyone headed out west! read more

When the Browning owned this restaurant it was a place to go. Now that Debbie or others are in charge it has gone to the dumps. If they forget to give you what you ordered and PAYED for they could care less how far away you live. They act like you are stealing from them if you complain. I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt and ordered over $60.00 of food. Did not get half of the food. Then when I confronted the cook he ran off saying "I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED AT WORK" What is that about? All I said was can I ask you a personal question and didn't have to say anymore. Good typical little American style cafe. Has excellent homemade Pies that are famous in the area and people come from far and wide to get them. Also on thursday nights they have a pot roast dinner that is pretty amazing. Burgers are also above-average . SO if your passing through I do recommend stoping here for some food that will hit the spot. Not the best but not the worst . I took some out of town guests up to Port Townsend yesterday. We left home with the though of eating a late breakfast before we got to Port Townsend. Stopped at the Chimacum Cafe....granted it was 11:15 AM but there was NO breakfast menu. They were only serving lunch and dinner items. We should have left at that point but decided to stay. Much to our dismay when you order a burger it does NOT come with fries...just a little bag of Lay's Chips! Fries are an additional $3.59! The food was 'ok'...but that was about it. So...for a fairly substandard meal I paid a bill of $74.00 for myself and four others. I swear we should've waited and ate at McDonald's in Port Townsend! Won't go there again! read more

Very disappointed with the food and the service. I was very upset to see that a table of 7 who came in after us got their food way before our order of two. I ordered the pork special which turned out not to be pork, it was turkey. It came with frozen vegetables and applesauce. We wait too long for the bland, frozen food and no one apologized for the wait or could explain why others were getting their food and we were not. We will never go there again. read more

It's a traditional diner and a fine one at that. Huge portions which are a tad bit pricey but nobody is eating all of a meal anyway. Many entrees come with ice cream. Service and ambiance are vintage Chimacum and good. The only real weirdness here is the reliance on frozen vegetables. The dinner salad is a bit Spartan. Ultimately, better than Denny"s but Denny's circa 1975. Denny's has changed. The Chimacum Cafe hasn't. read more

Stopped here on our way to PT for a meeting and had dinner. I had the Roast beef with mashed potatoes and my wife had the Chicken Fried Steak. We had lunch at the Chimacum Cafe on Saturday the 15th of February. We both ordered cheeseburgers and fries. It was the most tasteless food I have eaten in a very long time. The meat was dry, the fries were bland but the onion slice was huge (blech). The tartar sauce tasted like paste. Additional salt, pepper and ketchup could not rescue the meal. If you use your bank card here check your transactions I had breakfast at Chimacum Cafe last Saturday I used my debit card I check my transaction Monday and it was pending at $13.60 the cost of my breakfast the $3.00 tip had not processed yet I checked Tuesday morning and it went through at $26.60 not $16.60 $10.00 added to tip! I called the Cafe right away the gal that answered the phone said she heard that was a bank problem she told me to call my bank I did the bank said no it a problem with the Cafe I called the Cafe back for a couple hours and the line was busy got through that night left message for call back called and again Tuesday still no manager to help finally got a call from a manager Wednesday 5pm she said they were having problems with there chip reader double processing! But that's just doesn't added up! My $10.00 was refunded to my account Thursday morning but if I wasn't pro active I don't think I would have I had breakfast with two other people we all had an extra $10.00 added that's $30.00 just from our table. read more

One spring day I chose to visit the distinguished Chimicum Cafe. I deviated from my normal breakfast haunt (about 500 yards down the street) to explore options. Bold like Ferdinand Magellan or Christopher Columbus I would stumble in to bold new restaurant ecosystems. It was a difficult week of a difficult year and so health was not my priority. The most depression nullifying item on the menu on this given day was an open faced turkey sandwich. When I was young I was introduced to this concept by grandparents. The "Open Faced" turkey sandwich is not really a sandwich in the conventional sense....but consists of two or three pieces of cheaply manufactured white bread....drizzles with more turkey and both gravey (over a bed of mashed potato's) that no reasonable human could be expected to finish. On this particular day I was the human that could finish it. To my extreme chagrin all the potatoes it my fifteen dollar sandwich dish were instant. When I asked the owner why this was so she said...."well most restaurants serve instant potato's." Her husband and co-owner was also according to her paraphrase "not fond of change". After complaining and giving back two and a half of my three pounds of food......I was advised to try the pie. Everyone apparently likes pie. No matter how badly you were just f...ed.....the pie will make everything better. The Chimicum cafe is like the mother in an abusive family that tries to make everyone feel better by making cookies and pie. Daddy is DRINKING ladies and gentlemen. Down the street is a place called the Farmsreach Cafe. They serve only real potatoes and produce from the surrounding farms. read more

Meh! This place is a nostalgic hop for locals and visitors alike, but it's sub par. The food is bland and heavy. I couldn't believe the amount of butter and sour cream offered for a baked potato!
