I am a fan of their extremely potent, $5, plastic-cup with a straw margaritas, once a semester or so. I am not going to order a margarita at a Mexican restaurant, though in general because I am usually disappointed. These are totally killer, small, cheap, and does the job. First, the food & drinks here were very good. I had the chimychanga, which was delicious. Best of all, everything was pretty cheap. Drinks are strong but good. However, be ready to be crowded into a space with lots of students, especially if you are coming on a weekend and especially even more during a Tech game weekend. The thing to get at Chimy's: a Margarita (or 2 (anymore will put you over the top)) and the Combo Fajita Nachos, which are big enough for two people and like, $7.95. Add your toppings at the salsa bar. Don't forget the sour cream, it perfects the dish. Margaritas are a bit pricey, but they're strong and delicious, not too sweet - well worth it. And when I say pricey, I mean Lubbock pricey where the cost of living is low. These babies could go for $10-12 in a big city. I've hear they have everclear in them, but this could be urban legend. Even if they do, it's not an offensively alcoholic tasting drink. Just pure margarita perfection. Easy now. Easy. Other favorites include any of the quesadillas, even just a bean and cheese is good. Cons: I'd stay away from the fish tacos. I like fish tacos, but these aren't great - at all. Sometimes hard to find parking. Nevermind the Greek patronage. If you know the bouncer you will have the best time here and you will get in with no problem. My two friends and I were in line while our other friends were already inside with a table. And the guy letting people in with longer curly hair let in the two girls behind us and when we asked why he said it was because he knew them and they already had friends at a table waiting (so did we). This is very rude and unprofessional. We had to wait 40 minutes for them to do a shift change and that took way to long considering the place was clearly under capacity. I really hope the manager talks to the staff informing them that it's not okay to let people skip the line just because they are friends with the employees. read more

Maybe it's best to avoid this place in the summer. They clearly didn't have their A team working today. We came in for lunch and I ordered two grilled fish tacos on corn tortillas, and my companion ordered two fried fish tacos on flour. I asked for guacamole instead of tartar sauce (was told there would be an extra charge--fine); he asked for sour cream to go with his. We also got a basket of chips and salsa. After we paid, I waited for the chips. And waited. Finally had to ask the counter help, who was busy doing something else, and she got them, saying "oops, I forgot." Okay. The chips turned out to be very stale....probably left over from yesterday. I took them back and said, "these chips aren't very good." "Are they stale?" the girl asked, not surprised. Ugh. She replaced our chips with fresh ones. (WHY WOULD YOU PUT OUT OLD CHIPS IN THE FIRST PLACE??) When our food arrived, my tacos were half the size of my companions, yet I paid more for grilled fish. Fine if you are dieting, not so much if you are hungry and want value for your money. Oh, well, at least I had edible chips now. The guacamole and sour cream we ordered were missing, so I had to wait around and ask for those. The food, once we got the chips replaced, was OK. The service was not. I love this place! I usually go from 2-7 PM during the weekdays when it's not so packed and the drinks are even cheaper. It's the perfect place to meet up with some friends and have drinks. The margaritas are cheap and way strong! So be CAREFUL :) I love everything on the menu except the nachos, they're just super chinchy with the meet and use shredded cheese. My favorite are the tacos and queso. It's the best queso in Lubbock! Delicious! It does start getting packed around 7/8 so if you plan on eating there, good luck finding somewhere to sit! read more

I loved the nachos (beef and chicken fajitas). They are big enough to share. The guacamole could have been fresh, but the nachos were so good I didn't miss it. My strawberry margarita, frozen, was delicious. I would have liked more, but I felt great on the first. You have to order in the front. Then they call your name for the food I the microphone. This seems to be the hot spot for students nearby, which made the whole place a turn-off for me. They have a decent happy hour menu and their margaritas are super strong (at least for me). The line may be overwhelming but it goes by quickly and everything on the menu is literally made once you order so the wait isn't long as well. They have mostly drinks on their happy hour and I thought their food was mediocre. I got the crispy beef taco, which you can get at a Jack-in-the-Box easily. I also got the chicken soft taco and it was big but it was alright too. Of course the whole point of going here is hanging out with a group of friends. It does get packed so you have to scout out for a spot and if you get enough of your friends to come you can take over a spot. The restrooms are dirty and I think the whole place is a little run down. The cleaning staff are constantly on the move to pick up any trash you have, which is nice. read more

Chimys is by far my favorite college bar in Lubbock. The food is delicious, the service is quick, the drinks are strong and relatively cheap, it has a great atmosphere. The only knock I have on it is the building itself. I believe it is an old house, but it is very cramped and especially out on the patio, there's almost no room to walk. It's also so popular there's usual a line out to the parking lot and is one-in-one-out from about 8 until close. I've had several things to eat here. The green chile cheese burger is incredible. Get the jalapeño bun. Chimychanga is good, tacos are fine, and the nachos are unreal. Big as your face and a huge portion for a reasonable price. Also, very greasy but what do you expect from nachos? As far as drinks go, you won't find a stronger margarita in Lubbock. They're cheap and 2 will be plenty enough to get you feelin like you could fight Floyd Mayweather. Mix drinks are solid, and they have like 5 beers (Domestics, Shiner, and Dos XX) on tap. Happy hour drink specials here are what dreams are made of. Bar tenders are cute, fast, friendly, and generous. Tip them and tip them well. There's always busboys going around to pick up cups and trays so it doesn't get cluttered. Door guys are relatively friendly compared to other places. Chimys is a Lubbock staple. If you end up on broadway before midnight, and you're not at Chimys, you're doing it wrong. read more

Ok, listen. If you are 20 and snuck into this place to drink, they are probably the best margaritas ever. In reality, they are good but not great. They mix them strong and they offer lots of different types of Margaritas, however, they aren't "the best". With that said, this place kicks ass! The food is good, the atmosphere is cool, and the drinks will kick you squarely in the balls. I went with some buddies to watch a Tech game and ended up with a hangover at 8'oclock ..in the evening! Just take a bulldozer to this heap of trash. The building is run down, smells, and just flat out looks like hell. With the amount of people who continue to pack themselves into this sweat shack and wait in line only to perspire everything you drink I'm surprised it hasn't collapsed in on itself and killed everybody. I made the mistake of going to this place twice once for lunch (the fish tacos made me heave like a bear), and once for drinks-waited at their "line" which is very strategically placed right in front of the main entrance and patio(smh) so not only is it hard to get in line, you had no idea who is in line because so many people just putz around the main entrance and the patio the cheap margaritas are so awful how everyone raves about them is beyond me they must like to drink stale piss mixed with tequila. Oh, Chimys. These margaritas will get you wasted but they taste terrible. I spent many weekends here during my time in college, as it is the quintessential college "margarita hut". It is completely filled with the greek scene, but after a few margaritas you won't even care as you shuffle along the Broadway shuffle. When my husband got back we noticed they actually forgot the nachos from our order. I called them and they said they wouldn't refund us for the nachos but we could come back and they would make the nachos for us.
