This restaurant is by Chinatown, not far from Capital One Arena. Jose Andres has several restaurants in the District. We wanted to see how "round one" would taste before ordering other items. After serving our dish & pouring water, we didn't see the server until we were finished. He didn't ask how we were doing or if we needed anything. The atmosphere is pleasant and upbeat. There is a weekday and weekend menu. Brunch is popular on the weekend. The menu is a bit pricey. We had a nice table near the window. If you want more privacy, sit at either end of the restaurant. It gets busy and crowded in the middle. Hubby ordered an amazing pasta dish. It was flavorful and nicely plated. My quinoa was wonderful. I enjoy using lettuce to wrap items. If our server had stopped by, I would have asked for more lettuce. The desert was wonderful. The texture, flavors and plating were great. It is obvious that each dish is carefully checked before leaving the kitchen. The manager eventually stopped by. When he learned we had been ignored, he offered desert. We thought he was offering coffee as part of the apology. He was not. Our server started taking interest in us after desert, when the manager had spoken to him and we didn't need him anymore. If you don't mind spending money on a creative meal, you will find yummy dishes here. We stopped by a fast food restaurant on the way home since we didn't have that much at the restaurant.
Fun little concept of Chinese and Peruvian fusion food as the name suggests. I was eating by myself so I tried passionate fruit juice and the lomo saltado, unfortunately not the Chinese fusion food. The drink and food I'd say is pretty standard. The Lomo Saltado dish, however, I'd say that it's just a bit too salty, and the beef steak is slightly overdone, but only slightly. So I'd still give it a 4/5. Overall, I thought it's a beautiful space and nice dining experience and I'd still recommend it to others, just not on the top of my list.
Service was excellent as she made great recommendations as well as altered some items. The sashimi and dumplings were excellent. Very cool vibe.
I came on Tuesday which I realized is Dim Sum Tuesday where they have discounted items from their dim sum menu! I'll have to try that next time, but this time I got the Ceviche Nikkei, Lucky 12 (4pcs of 3 different types of siu mai), and the Aji de Gallina. My favorite was the ceviche nikkei; it was so refreshing and the tuna was the perfect texture! Out of the three types of siu mai, the siu mai tradicional was my favorite. The pollo siu mai has like a salsa in it that was very unique but not my favorite. The Aji de Gallina was very hearty and comforting. The chicken pieces themselves were fine but the stew was so delicious. The real star of the show was the dessert: ponderaciones de kiwicha! The banana ice cream it comes with was phenomenal, it pairs so well with the cocoa powder! I would come back just for dessert! The ambiance is really nice! Decor is super cute, the light fixtures are really cool! Service was great!
Honestly, it's average food at above average prices. The ambiance is what you're paying for here, because the space is pretty cool. I was surprised at how busy it was, despite the average tasting food. It is loud and difficult to have conversations, so that is worth considering. I got to sample quite a few dishes, and aside from Siu Mai, I don't think there's a single dish I would order again. I love Peruvian food and Chinese food, but this didn't work for me. The prices are not absurd by any means, but for the same money there's better places. Service was also really slow. Food came out decently fast, but it took forever to pay.
I had no idea there was another José Andres spot in a two block radius - and it was worth the visit! Our server was attentive and made a great recommendation on the cauliflower when we decided to get another dish. We especially loved the ceviche Nikkei - great flavor and texture. The Hong Kong rich noodle dish was so so compared to the rest. And the dessert - yum! Tasted like caramel with passion fruit ice on top. The decor / ambiance is both modern and also low key - they have metal chairs, and funky lights. It doesn't have the higher end feel -- if that's what you want, try Zaytinya.
Overall experience was great! I recommend getting a reservation if you're eating here between 6-8pm. Although you can make it the day of! It's family style here and my two favorite dishes were the dancing yucca and hamachi ceviche! It really brought out the two Hispanic and Asian cultures to me. I wasn't the biggest fan of the tallarin zhen fe (my husband really enjoyed it) because I thought the noodles were undercooked. The Brussels sprouts and dumplings were pretty good! Definitely coming back here to try more dishes :)
We enjoyed our weekend brunch. We order 2 ceviches to share, a tuna and octopus. All of us loved the tuna. One didnt care for the octopus. For entrees, we ordered the cheeseburger from the brunch menu which was fantastic. We didnt care for the plantain sides though. We also shared the Concolon fried rice and added shrimp, which had really interesting spices. I would come here again. Cocktails were kind of a miss though. Waitress wasnt very familiar with the cocktail menu.
We're fans of Chef José Andrés whole make the world a better place vibe and have made it our mission to try all of his DC restaurants whenever we're in town. This time up it was China Chilcano...Pervian/Asian/Spanish fusion food with lots of vegetarian options and unique things to try. We (my wife, son and I) all got variations of the tasting menu and each made different choices from the options available...and we each had different experiences. I had a bit of a "the grass is greener" experience as I tried bits of what my son had ordered and generally preferred what he got in terms of taste and texture. Universally, the food was gorgeous and presented in a photo-ready manner one would expect from this kind of establishment. The desserts were also unique and worth trying. (Often desserts at a nicer place can be standard variations of the same thing you can get anywhere...what's on the menu here is worth sticking around for as you can't get it anywhere else. I also had a Pisco Sour Cocktail...I'm a fan of trying the things that are unique to where I am...in this case, the cocktail looked and tasted great, but it had more of a standard sour vibe than anything else. If the Peruvian pisco liquor had any unique taste, I wasn't able to perceive it in this cocktail. Service was perfect.
Not one of Jose Andre's best restaurants i just admit. It's probably at the same level as Jaleo. The ceviche and Hamachi was ok nothing special. My clients enjoyed their lomo saltado and tallarines saltado. My shrimp saltado was ok but a little bland. Servers were friendly and the ambiance is nice inside with fun decor throughout the restaurant which is pretty big. I'll try other places next time I'm in the nation's capital. Would recommend you do the same.
The food at China Chilcano was absolutely delicious and full of unique, bold flavors. Every dish we tried was well-prepared, fresh, and beautifully presented. Unfortunately, the customer service did not match the quality of the food. The service was slow, inattentive, and lacked the level of hospitality you'd expect. It was difficult to get our server's attention, and we often felt overlooked throughout the meal. While the kitchen clearly delivers an excellent dining experience, the front-of-house service needs significant improvement. I would return for the food, but I hope the customer service improves because it took away from what could have been a fantastic experience.
Food was excellent, especially for dim sum Tuesday! Service was dismal. At least the host acknowledged my existence... he even had to ask if I had been served and of course no, no water yet in 90 degree heat wave. Server never came by so he even took my order. I had to flag someone down for a check and more water. I'd go here for the food, but the service was terrible.
Came here before a show at Warner Theater - a little far from the venue but not a bad walk! We started with the brussel sprouts and yucca fries - both were incredible. A bonus was their ability to accommodate for gluten allergies! For my main I got the Tam Tam with a fried egg - it was so flavorful and a perfect portion! Highly recommend for a date night or dinner with friends!

I came here with some friends on a Thursday night to celebrate a birthday. We made a reservation, and are glad we did because it was packed! Our waiter was extremely nice and explained everything on the menu. Everyone's favorite dish was the salmon we ordered off the specials menu. It was really flavorful! I thought the Aeropuerto was good, but not great. It was less filling than I expected it to be. The dessert was outstanding and a must try! I've never had banana ice cream before and loved it! It was pretty crowded and loud inside, but not too bad so we could hear each other over the table. I would definitely come back to try the happy hour and lunch menus. read more
Found this place by searching for a Michelin star restaurant. The food is definitely a 5 star. However, it didn't make me have orgasim like other Michelin star restaurants. Everything is cooked perfectly. It just didn't have a little extra kick that makes your heart jumping with joy. Definitely, it is the cheapest Michelin visit that I have had. The price is very reasonable. The dessert is probably what makes my heart sing except that they had the sour thing in the middle that ruined my taste bud. I had to eat around it. Overall, I'm glad I visited the place. read more

I was super excited to finally get a table here. And the food did not disappoint. It has a delicate mixture and is respectful of both culinary worlds. Absolutely loved it. I had the Pollo Siu Mai (dumplings), Aji de Gallina (almost like a porridge), and the Suspiro Limena for dessert. The dumplings were a great starter dish. They were just the right size and full of flavor. The Aji de Gallina was my favorite. It was so rich and creamy. The chicken was so well seasoned and they added an egg. The dessert was a delicious custard with passion fruit. The passion fruit added a soury kick which was amazing. The venue was nicely decorated, well organized, and there was interesting seating options throughout. There was a table almost built into the ground and our table had a rotating center. 10/10 would recommend for anyone looking for something new and interesting. read more

We accidentally came on a super packed night when there was a Caps game! Despite that we were seated right away with our reservation and the service was good! I'm a huge fan of shishito peppers and knew we had to order them. They came out perfectly cooked and in abundance! They were perfectly seasoned with a hint of spice from the ají panca and citrus from the limes. I highly recommend if you want a lighter appetizer with great flavor! We ordered the Siu Mai Dim Sum - Traditional, which was so good! They were small, but dense and filling. They were perfectly flavored and the dipping sauce made them perfect. I highly recommend if you want dim sum! The Szechuan Chili Wontons were out of this world! The flavor profile was INCREDIBLE and had me thinking about it long after the meal. The Szechuan chili oil with tarragon was such an interesting and unexpected combination! If you're a foodie and like to try interesting bites, this is a must-try. I really enjoyed the Donburi Ji Song! The iced tea was actually super impressive, I really enjoyed the flavors they used in the tea and would recommend if you enjoy a cold tea! Dessert was also adventurous and we went with Ponderaciones de Kiwicha. The flavor profile was really good and had us talking about it for a while! The banana ice cream was not strong and overwhelming, but subtle and silky. The cookie was light and airy, which made a perfect dessert after a heavy meal. As always, Jose Andreas did it again! This is my second favorite Jose restaurant in the District (second to minibar) and have tried them all! Made a reservation for two on a Saturday evening at 6pm, and I'm glad we did because the party that came in before us was turned away for not having a reservation on such a busy night. We came for the tasting menu and was not disappointed. We lost count of how many plates we ended up receiving (not all are pictured), and were definitely full by the end of it. Stand-out dishes were the Dancing Yucca and Tradicional Siu Mai. The desserts included in the tasting menu were the Suspiro Limeña and Marcianos. The pacing of each dish was manageable and gave room in between to digest. I didn't really study the menu beforehand, so each dish was a nice surprise. I also got the Chilcano cocktail with the passionfruit Macerados, which was nice and sweet. The restaurant's atmosphere feels stylish and high-end but in a fun, approachable way. It got busy as our meal went on, but died down by the time we left, with the tables around us being left empty when their respective parties left. The service was friendly and attentive, and they did their best to answer our questions about the dishes. I was a little bit skeptical going in, because I had no idea what Asian/Peruvian fusion would entail, but each dish felt very intentional and respectful of the represented cultures. Yum! Expensive but yummy and a great experience. It was a good mix of casual but high end with a trendy interior and outdoor seating. We loved the traditional dim sum, my husband loved the char siu with bao. I liked the lomo saltado but would try something different next time. read more

The decor is interesting, I love the wall art so much! was recommended this spot by a good friend in the area. We ordered the yucca fries without mayo (boyfriend HATES it), Szechuan chili wontons, Lomo saltado and for the dessert the crispy spiral cookie (no, I don't remember the actual name without consulting the menu). Yucca fries: 4/5! Nice and crispy, a few of them were soft though. Szechuan chili wontons: 6/5. My partner and I agreed that this was the BEST and most memorable part of the night. Lomo saltado: 5/5, everything about this was delicious. Even the stewed tomatoes and onions!!! Kiwicha dessert: 4.5/5 the dessert was amazing, the banana ice tasted more like vanilla? My boyfriend's entree did not make the list because it was NOT memorable at all. It was delicious but it lacked depth compared to everything else we were served. read more
Absolutely love the theme and amazing creations this restaurant has to offer. We enjoyed every single dish and so did our kids. The Lomo Saltado was delicious with super tender steak and the fusion sauce was delightful. However, I thought the rice to sauce ratio was off. MORE RICE!!!! Good was spectacular! We got Shishito Peppers and dancing yucca to start, it was my first time trying the Shishito Peppers and they were so good! I tried the tallarin de verduras and I did not know what to expect and was pleasantly surprised at how delicious and filling it was! Def want to return! Gave this a 3 star as my hopes were high, having dined at several other of Jose's concepts. Don't get me wrong, the ingredients were fresh and decently composed. We did the tatami testing menu to try a sampling of everything. Ceviche was one of the highlights and excellent executed. Other than the yuca fries, the rest of the dishes fell a little bit short. While I can embrass the concept and influence, the fusion sometimes seems to not work perfectly. The Inca Kola though was something worth trying if not ordering a cocktail or wine. The service and our waitress were amazing. Nothing I would change there or the ambiance of the place. Not a place I wouldn't go back to, but also not a place that left me wanting to plan my next return trip. read more
BLUF: Skip their tasting menu, order a la carte. Our party of three decided to get the Tatami tasting menu for $98 each. We were hungry and got caught up in the moment of being in a José Andres restaurant and decided to go for it. Why not? I'll tell you why not. Seven savory dishes plus two desserts. Let's round each dish up to $20. That's $180, but let's round that to an even $200 because some dishes like the Lomo Saltado may be more expensive. The Tatami tasting cost the three of us $300. For $100 less we could have ordered those same dishes off the menu and it would probably have been more! Food was delicious. Order all you want a la carte. The tasting menu was NOT worth it. read more
China Chilcano is Chef Jose Andres's Peruvian restaurant, which explores Peru's diverse heritage (including Japanese and Chinese heritage in Peru). I had lunch there a few weeks ago during Restaurant Week, and it was great. For $25/person, I selected a starter, an entree, and a dessert. (Would definitely return for Restaurant Week next year). I started with the Siu Mai Pollo (chicken, scallion, cloud ear mushroom, and aji amarillo siu mai/dumplings with black vinegar chicha de jora dipping sauce), which was a really good (very flavorful and great portion size for a three course tasting). Then, I had to have their Aji de Gallina, which is something I almost always order at Peruvian restaurants (aji amarillo chicken stew, fresh cheese, pecans, botija olives, egg, and rice). It was definitely one of the prettiest versions of the dish I've had, and it had great flavor. Versions of the dish vary but I thought this was a very good version that I'd be happy to eat again anytime. And for dessert, I had to have the Suspiro (a traditional Peruvian dessert - sweetened condensed milk custard topped with soft and crunchy meringue and passion fruit). It was stunning and delicious. This dessert can run too sweet for me, but the passionfruit lent a tartness that made the whole thing work exceptionally well. I had one cocktail, which was great (the meal was so quick, I didn't need more than one), and the service was also great. The restaurant is cool and modern - great vibes but on the louder side since it was so packed when I ate there. I definitely recommend reservations; at least during Restaurant Week, they were packed! I really enjoy Peruvian cuisine, and China Chilcano did not disappoint. Would happily return. read more

Walking in, you know you will be having a fun time. The decor is outstanding, a construction-y concept combined with fun lights. I would love to have a whole photoshoot here. Food is also amazing. Jose' Andre's is truly an innovative genius in the culinary circle! With his many exquisite restaurants in the DC AREA, each has a specialty all its own and this one in particular made a huge impression on me with his choices of food preparation and styles! What can you say but go and experience this spot in particular! From my choices of appetizer to dinner and dessert, you will have tasted the most delicious dishes! I can't believe that the kitchen chefs prepared my meal truly perfect in every way and the staff of service employees were very professional! If Señor Andre's reads this and I hope he does! I have followed his restaurants and his huge humanitarian benefits and support for years so it only proves that whatever he does will be a success as this restaurant is to me! Due to the food, service, and ambiance I think I'm going to become a regular. The food is always good. The desserts aren't as appetizing to me but the food is great. It was packed Memorial Day weekend, so me and some friends from out of town sat at the bar. The bartender was kind and greatly informative of the menu. I had the shrimp Aeropuerto and it was good. The shrimp was fresh and seasoned. The vegetables were fresh. I enjoyed the mix of rice and noodles. I think I will return and try the tasting menu. read more
Had a lovely Saturday brunch here. Unfortunately the outdoor seating wasn't open so we sat indoors, but I was very impressed with the decor! The inside is charming and quirky. I had the Papa Relleno for my entree and a pisco sour to go with it. The entree was good, but the pisco sour was phenomenal! I'll definitely be returning to try more items on the menu. read more

This is probably up there as my favorite happy hour menu in DC. There are so many delicious food options at a great deal, and I love a pisco sour--especially at $7. This was my second time at China Chilcano (first time was in summer '21 with a group of 4 for dinner). This time, I went with my partner and we ordered one of every food item on the happy hour menu to share (+1 fish bun so we each had one) and one ceviche. We were so full after the happy hour food, we probably could have done without the ceviche. All the food items were standouts. I didn't know what to expect with the siu mai since it's not traditionally made with chicken, but it was delicious, no sauce even needed. My favorites would have to be either the chicken lettuce cups or the fried fish bun. The chicken portion is generous and just two full lettuce cups is extremely satisfying. The bun on the fried fish bun seemed to be pan fried itself, and had an incredible texture when you bit into it because the outside was toasted but the inside was still pillowy and chewy. The pisco sours have the option for a $1 fresh flavor mixin. I got one regular pisco sour but opted for one with mashed passionfruit added in as my second. When I go back, I'd definitely try another mixin off the bat! The added flavor really brightened an already amazing drink. Jose Andres is yet to disappoint! read more

Whatever Josè Andres is selling, I am buying. I am so thankful for his giving spirit with World Kitchen, and am happy to support him and his restaurants whenever I can. With that in mind, a while we were in DC, I figured why not try another one restaurants' tasting menus?! we ended up going to China Chilcano and it was no surprise that everything was amazing again. (When I added the photos, it switched the order so I apologize...) In the order of these photos, I will start with dessert - Suspiro Limeña which is apparently an iconic dessert of Peru. It's sweetened condensed milk custard topped with soft and crunchy meringue and passionfruit. Such a perfect blend of textures and sweet/creamy. Next was probably the most unexpected dish and that was the Causa Limeña. This is chicken salad that is surrounded by that yellow potato causa which didn't itself have a distinct flavor, but the chicken salad within was so flavorful and dressed beautifully. This final picture was of the When Pigs Fly, which is a BBQ pork steam bun with tamarind hoisin sauce. The bun was pillowy and the pork was tender, but the other dishes certainly outshined. Thank God, I was joined at this meal by my cousin and her husband, so we could strategize what dishes we were getting from the tasting menu and try as many of them as possible. I mean... Look at this next course! This is Young Coconut Ceviche- think of it as vegetarian sashimi. It's young coconut that has been marinated in coconut leche de tigre with cilantro, fresno peppers, sesame chili oil, and cancha. Now... I can't even explain what all is going on in this dish, but the texture, flavor, and complexity all work so well together to create this stunning and unique dish. Next is an overhead view of a couple additional dishes that were ordered. In the top right is a dish that if I was going to just order one item as a lunch entrée, it might be this Tallarín de Verundas- chow mein noodles, tomato, scallions, bean, sprouts, and pepper. It was as if stirfry had a much more sophisticated sibling. I loved the flavors and the balance. It filled you up, but had enough veggies, and the fresh noodles feel overly heavy. In the bottom, right was Ají de Gallina, "Peru's Most Precious Dish!" and with a name like that, you knew we had to try it. This is a Ají amarillo chicken stew with fresh cheese, pecans, botija olive, egg, and rice. It kind of tasted like a rich curry. Very tasty. The last photo showcases the Tacu Tacu a la Pobre. Again... Think of it like a very elevated fried rice. This is Canary beans and rice cake with sweet plantains, salsa criolla, aji limo, and a fried egg. I'm telling you... Do yourself a favor and check out any Jose Andres restaurant you can. Obviously I would recommend the tasting menu. This brunch included three courses for $34. Money well spent in my opinion. I'm not sure you will meet a more tentative and welcoming staff. Enjoy! read more

Very unique restaurant. The food is quite different than what I'm used, but all was delicious. Service was fast for the most part until dessert, then slowed down to a crawl. The bill came fast, and we were able to use apple Pay, which is nice and saves a lot of time. Their decorations were done well, and overall, I would come back. read more

Comically small portions at a comically high price. See $20 ceviche that had me second guessing if they missed half the order. Same goes for the $44 whole chicken with no sides. Add it to the list of overpriced, overvalued restaurants in DC read more
We were so excited to try China Chilcano and it was so delicious and more than lived up to the hype! The atmosphere and decor are modern and fun and we had a great server. We split the brunch sampler and the salmon ceviche and Hong Kong style noodles and they were all incredible. We finished by splitting the Suspiro a Limena for dessert which was divine and is an absolute must. read more
My visit here wasn't bad and it wasn't great. I had hoped for a better overall experience. I made a reservation and my dinner buddy and I checked in with hostess about 15 min before res time and informed we would be at the bar. After a few drinks at the bar our res time had passed by about 10 min and went back to hostess to hear "we've been waiting for you". Obvious an overside by them as we already checked in and were at the bar. The little things do matter and this is one of them. We closed our tab at the bar before being seated and there was a hiccup with closing the tab as well. Nothing significant to note but again another slip. Our server was nice and offered suggestions when asked as this was our first visit. The food was tasty and satisfied the curiosity. The ambiance was good in the area of the restaurant we were sat (behind bar area), the lighting was nice. read more

BLUF: Hair in food & crap service The ambience and interior decor is super cute and the space available for seating is expansive. We didn't enjoy our service too much though. The first few dishes were good but, of course price point is wild because of the location. The ceviche Nikkei was good and tasted very fresh. We tried the tradition Liu mai and were pleased, moist and flavorful tiny bites of dim sum. At this point we're both about 3 drinks deeps and decide to order our entree. So a different server comes out with the Concolon. When it's served it comes in a clay pot with all the ingredients in sections of the bowl on top of the rice. The server took two tools and starting mashing it all together and then placed the clay pot in between us. As I'm taking my second bite from the serving on my small plate, i find a small straight black hair. I inspect the clay pot and pull out a very long straight black hair. All we got was a sorry about that from our original server who wasn't really personable or nice from the beginning. Of course it was removed from the bill but an apology from the manager would have been nice. Disappointing as this location has been on my book marked list since finding it about a year or so ago. Not worth the hype and price point if the quality isn't going to match that. read more
I don't know how China Chilcano has anything but 5* stars. This is an affordable José Andrés restaurant in the heart of Washington DC, and it isn't difficult to get a reservation. Moreover, the food is outstanding. We had a party of four. We started the evening with cocktails. I had the pisco sour. Another person had the bullet train to Tokyo, and the other two had highballs. Everyone loved their cocktails. And the price is on point at under $15 each. The restaurant is tapas style. We got... - Shishito Peppers - Aeropuerto with chicken - Concolón - Ají de Gallina - Lomo Saltado - Suspiro Limeña (dessert) This was the perfect amount of food for 4 people. The star of the show was the shishito peppers, believe it or not. We all said it. I could honestly order 3 servings of them myself. So delicious. And not spicy, if that is a concern of yours. After the shishito peppers, I would say the best dishes were the Lomo Saltado and Ají de Gallina. Just good, brothy, hearty goodness that hits you in that spot right between your heart and your belly. Super satisfying. The Suspiro Limeña was surprising. It doesn't look appetizing when it comes out, and the initial bite is a little weird, but after a couple seconds, all of the flavors hit and it is an amazing bite of food. How is the parking situation? Especially for Friday's night. Thank you.
Our rez was for 9pm and we found street parking around the corner. There's also lots you can pull into around the corner. But cars were pulling in and out on the street so give it a shot first.
Is there pet friendly seating? We have a small dog
Yes they have outdoor seating that allows for space for a dog!
Is there normally a line for lunch?
No. We've walked right in and seated right away a few times....never a line at lunch time in my experience.
