For those of us who are native to LA, Pioneer Chicken is a childhood staple that's attached to good…read morememories (at least for me). I had a Flashback Friday moment when I drove by this location. My brain quickly got nostalgic with fond images and feel-good vibes and I knew I had to stop by. My mom brought me to Pioneer Chicken when I was a child and I remember how crispy the chicken used to be. Sometimes, leftovers made it into my lunchbox. She knew how to win my heart through my belly even back then. I haven't had Pioneer Chicken since the early 90s, and I was pleasantly surprised when I dug my teeth into the drumstick. It was super crisp -- exactly how I remembered it. And the iconic orange batter was the same yummy recipe, possibly crispier than KFC's. The biscuit was my next favorite and I don't remember it being THIS good with its hint of honey flavor. The mashed potatoes and gravy have not changed, but the coleslaw was a tad different. It used to be chopped into mini squares. Now it's shredded cabbage, but it has the same light mayo flavor. Also, I love that they use less plastic Their side item containers are made of paper, both top and bottom, which also adds to the retro vibe. Loved looking at the old school photos on the wall that date back to the 1960s with Pioneer Pete, The Flintstones, and Muhammad Ali, aka the OG "G.O.A.T". It was cool to learn that Jessica, who took my order at the register, was part of a bigger franchise history. Her dad owned this location, and passed it on to his son. Family-owned for the last 38 years, this location is one of the originals. And one of the last two still standing. The nostalgia of this place will always have a special place in my heart. I'll have to come back for their fish & chips and maybe even try the gizzards on my next trip down here.

I finally got to visit this place after dropping friends off in Union Station. My original idea was…read moreto go to Amboy, but unfortunately for them they didn't open up in time. I decided Howlin Rays deserved my attention. There was already a line in place and they were playing some good music from the restaurant. When it came time for me to order, Ryan at the counter was very friendly to me. Everyone in the restaurant was. I really enjoyed that. I stuck with getting the mild sando, and didn't expect the chicken breast so gigantic! It was a delicious sandwich and the spice was pretty good. I'm glad I didn't go any spicier than that. I ordered the fries which were actually pretty good. They were definitely seasoned, but they weren't heavily in taste sense. They had something for me to drink and it went really well with a meal actually. I'm glad that I could say that I enjoyed this place from beginning to end. It is a little hidden, but luckily for me I found it. Definitely will come back to have my wife try it one day.

No overpowering singular seasoning (cayenne) but a nice, FLAVORSOME balance of all seasonings. Fries are quite expensive for being fries BUT THEY ARE SO GOOD. Service here is above and beyond, the nicest people and most extroverted you will meet. Have a chit chat with them and find out! Cutest little plaza with all you can ask for... DELICIOUS FOOD!

Stumbled across this place cause I was in the area for a job. Upon walking in, the vibes are very cozy and intimate, not a lot of seating though. My waiter, Gabriel, was extremely friendly, welcoming, and had very good knowledge of the menu which I appreciate a lot. Now back to the omelette-- oh my god. Best omelette in my life I think. The eggs were soft, pillowy and cooked to PERFECTION. Not overdone and not super runny either. The chicken was extremely tender and flavorful. The sauce they used was sweet and savory, the pickled onions balanced it all out with the perfect acidity. I wish I was around this area a lot more, I'll definitely be coming back!

The green sauce has a significant tang to it so the two really balanced each other out. Next time I'll definitely add a protein as well, but this bowl of chilaquiles was delicious! I also had a Jamaica lemonade which was great, it had a nice kick/tang to it. They make everything in house - the chips, their meats, everything. They have a solid, limited menu, and I can't wait to try other items. It's a small restaurant but they make you feel like you're home. The gentlemen at Tenampal are so welcoming, they give so much attention to each customer, they really take care of you. They constantly check in on you to make sure you're happy without being overbearing. As far as service goes, this experience was within the top 3 experiences I've had at a restaurant in my entire life just in terms of how welcoming they were. I was very lucky to grab a seat here on Sunday - I've heard usually it's pretty busy to get in here but since I went during a World Cup game, I was able to be seated right away. The only thing - parking was pretty difficult, ngl. You gotta luck out finding street parking or go into the residential areas to park. But it's worth it!
