When we lived up north our favorite Chinese place was Twin Lion. When we moved south we couldn't find any restaurant with the same style of Chinese that we had liked so much. After cruising reviews online it sounded like China Hill might be the right fit. Since we live within walking distance we knew the delivery would be pretty fast and it was. I'm going to start by saying that if I was judging on food alone, I would be leaving a much higher rating. As far as Chinese delivery goes, the food is the best around. I've not had a bad dish, the chicken is well cooked and flavorful, and the portions are more than generous. In fact it was the food that led me to give China Hill another chance. The service is the worst, the girl working the phone today (1-3-14, around 330pm) didn't seem able to understand my order. I had to repeat several times, and she seemed confused. I ordered the same way that I typically do, but this time my food came as á la carte items instead of a combo, and I was missing the egg rolls and chicken wings. I called back and she said because I didn't "specifically say combo," I didn't get a combo. I was understanding, when the young lady replied in a snarky tone "sorry for the miscommunication." Working in food service myself, I didn't feel this was the proper tone to use to speak to customers. Up until that point, I was willing to place another order for the missing items. This is the third time I've received similar attitude from this restaurant in particular. Previously when I decided to take a hiatus from ordering, it was because of another rude phone interaction. My order came wrong, completely wrong entree for my aunt who was visiting town. I called back and the lady on the phone told me "I took your order and I known you didn't say that." When I had ordered off of a slip of paper containing everybody's orders. Telling a customer they are wrong is not good customer service. I really wanted to like this place. Mainly because they had delivery, and they were always here fast with very hot food. The first few times we ordered from them, the food was mediocre, but passable. It went down well, and didn't leave any "after issues" (aka farting hubby). I also knew that my expectations of eating Chinese down in Austin needed to be lowered slightly compared to what we had up in Ohio....but that's o.k. I was willing to accept that. However, after having good Chinese down in Austin as well as good Vietnamese....AND after the last two times we have gotten food, I have changed my mind about China Hill. The last two times were not good. I had Moo Shu Pork and Pork Egg Foo Young. I did not feel well about 2 hours after eating both meals...and normally it's the hubby's flatulence I am worried about. First of all, I found China Hill when looking for buffets, and it came up in that search. China Hill is NOT a buffet, but since I had driven from Lakeway thinking it was, I ate lunch there anyway. Tuesday before Thanksgiving, 12 noon, and I'm the only person there.. Not a good sign. It was a beautiful day, the front door was propped open, and there were flies all over everything.. Let me explain why I don't like flies around my food.. One second, a fly can be licking the rotting guts of a roadkill squirrel, and the next, be on the tip of your drink straw. One second, a fly can be licking a steamy fresh lump of dog poo, and the next, be sitting on the sesame chicken you're about to eat. Just sayin' So, yes I did have the sesame chicken. It was good, fried rice was good, egg drop soup was okay, diet coke brought to you in a can with a glass of ice, hey this isn't Pei Wei, I know that. The portion size was large, I couldn't eat all of it, but I just couldn't get past the unsanitary conditions of the place. If I had the food from here delivered, I wouldn't have even thought twice about it, but being there in person, will probably keep me from eating there again. read more

This place gets five stars for three reasons: 1) consistently good flavor 2) cheap 3) tofu options. 1) We've ordered from here a couple times, and the food is always amongst the best take out Chinese either of us have had. We've ordered a couple different things on the menu, and I think I was only underwhelmed by the garlic tofu option. 2) The entries are cheap, the soup is cheap (the hot and sour soup is BOMB), the crab rangoons are relatively cheap and super tasty. Soooo cheap and consistently good? Already a five star. 3) I don't eat meat, so seeing the number of tofu options makes me warm and fuzzy inside. If you like spicy, I recommend the kung pao tofu. And my boyfriend has always enjoyed whatever chicken or shrimp dish he's gotten, too. The lemon sauce for the lemon chicken is delish. This place I'd not a place to dine in. It's best for carry out and delivery. The food is nothing special but I will hot all the right spots . It does is good and sometimes mediocre. The General Tso is usually the go to and the lo mein is not bad. I have had the beef and broccoli once again not special but not bad. The staff has always been friendly and mess up's are very rare. The delivery time is usually off by 5-25 minutes so don't be dissapointed if they are not on time, it's a common occurrence. For the most part, it's convenient it's cheap and tasty. read more

Decent food, awful service. We dined in the restaurant. The atmosphere was terrible. Throughout my entire meal I heard the employees bitching and moaning (loudly) about the terrible customers they had and many other things that I didn't need to hear. One particular employee was cursing extremely loudly, luckily there weren't any children in the restaurant at the time. My orange chicken was WAYYY too spicy. They didn't offer soy sauce on the table. You had to request it. The crab rangoons contained a block of cream cheese and maybe two small pieces of imitation crab meat. Oh, did I mention we got our crab rangoons after our entrees came out? Also, my boyfriend ordered a Dr. Pepper and got a water. It seemed they got a lot of deliveries. China Hill has the BEST Chinese food that I have ever had, and probably ever will have, when it comes to delivery. My best friend and I order from them at least 1x a week, and I'm not exaggerating. We usually get the same thing (steamed veggies on the diet menu w/ teriyaki sauce, substitute fried rice for the white rice that usually comes with it, and an order of the crab rangoon.) BUT when we have ventured away from our norm, and tried something else - Ex. the veggie lo mien or the steamed dumplings - We have not been disappointed. The egg rolls are a treat as well. The only complaint that I would have is that it does not get to my door fast enough so that it can get into my belly. But, when you order, they tell you it is going to be at least 45 minutes to an hour, and it takes every bit of that to get to you. BUT SO DAMN WORTH IT. Try it. Let me start by saying that I don't like stairs. Going downstairs doesn't give me vertigo, just a fear that I'm going to fall down the stairs. Maybe because I have. So there I was, leaving work at 5:00 as usual. I took the elevator down to the level that holds the timeclock so I wouldn't have to face the staircase. A quick jaunt across the garage, then only about six steps down to the clock--which, of course, I slipped and fell down. The one witness in the garage (who didn't even respond when I said hello to her in the elevator) glanced at me to see if I was alive and kept walking. Scraped knee, torn panythose, bruised ego. I hope nobody saw me. Except, you know, the people monitoring the security cameras. Sigh. In a fit of self-pity, and not wanting to stand long enough to cook, I decided to order delivery for the first time since I moved into my apartment 7 months ago. Pizza? No, I have like, ten frozen pizzas in the fridge. Chinese? YES. Despite my apartment complex's "no-soliciting" policy, every once in a while, a delivery menu attaches itself to my doorknob. China Hill is one of those delivery places. I fumbled with its website, which refused to allow me to order online. Wait, what? I have to speak to a real person? After trying to find other places that would let me order online, I gave in and called. The person who took my order got my address and order down right away, promised a delivery in 45 minutes and thanked me for my business. Forty-five minutes later, food is at my door. I live on a third-floor walk-up in a poorly-marked building, so I don't know how this delivery driver somehow knew which side of the building I lived on, but I was glad he did. The portions I received were HUGE, particularly the veggie lo mein. Really? I got like, five meals for $18 before tip? Awesome. Super awesome. I won't have to pack my lunches all week as long as I can eat Chinese food leftovers every day. Maybe I'll wait less than 7 months to order again! :) read more

Clearly gone downhill in the years since I have been here. Rice is dry, chicken is dry, there is a pea and a carrot in my dish (both are not mushrooms, jalapeño or basil the only veggies supposed to be there). The staff has sat at the desk the entire time I've been here complaining about the kitchen staff, complaining about days off and now have moved onto discussing their school schedule. $12.39 wasted and this taste will take a while to get out of my mouth. This is the only place we order Chinese food for delivery now - and every time we do, the driver gets lost (but at least he'll call and will find us). We find that the time window they give for delivery is fairly accurate. We'll typically get the same entrees every time (Kung Pao Chicken, Gen Tso's or Sesame Chicken, Fried Crab Wontons). We've found that the soup isn't that great, so we never get a combo meal... and even then, you still get rice with your order. I like their packaging because it is easy to store leftovers (plastic containers ideal for taking to work for lunch the next day). One thing I'm not too fond about is the condition of the broccoli that comes with the Sesame & Gen. Tso's Chicken. Sometimes it is nice and green and steamed. Other times, it is pretty cold. Then there are times when they bring half-yellow broccoli and that's not a good thing when you love broccoli and actually eat it. So there's definitely a slight issue with freshness, but otherwise if you're in the mood for some classic Chinese food, this is a pretty good place to order from. read more

I have now ordered delivery from China Hill on two occasions and been thoroughly impressed! The portions are huge, and the dishes are fresh and authentic. They were accommodating to our special requests (table hot mustard and sauce on side for the kids). And the delivery was much faster than the time quoted on both occasions. This is a weird place. It's a small hole-in-the wall, family run with reasonable prices, pretty good service and standard Chinese-American fare, which already exceed 3 stars, in my book. I didn't notice any provocative menu items but the servings are HUGE and it was good enough (although I'm sure not healthy in the least so that's why I also ordered a Diet Coke). Food exactly as expected except for the Orange Beef. The beef came out in the largest chunks of meat I've ever seen. Seriously, like Grandma's Sunday roast was cut into large chunks and deep fried. We have come to the conclusion that they hire former F1 pit crews to prepare the delicious food at lightening speed and then have the F1 race car drivers deliver it to us. So here's my update: As far as to go orders or delivery, they are terrible. They mess up orders or miss things from your order and when you call to complain they give you some kind of run around or argue. Their food isn't that great anyhow, I just liked the delivery because I can't leave my job and pizza gets exhausting. There is also no Jimmy johns that delivers here so my options are limited. Sine 2009 I have been frequenting China Hill. Maybe longer as a "coming back home to visit family" out of towner. Starting in 2009 and on into 2010, I ordered here probably at least 4+ times a month when i stayed near WM Cannon and West Gate. When i moved to Riverside / E. Oltorf area in 2011, I continued driving across town to go here. In 2013 i moved to Austin Colony, north of Del Valle where I just recently moved to. Still going to China Hill for my General Tso fix. So here it is 6 years later, and I WILL drive all the way to Sunset Valley for their food. It NEVER leaks in the package. In that time I've only ever had 3, maybe 4, problems. Problems so minor that WILL happen at any restaurant you go to this much. The only trouble was ever t he soup was a touch off to MY PERSONAL taste buds one time. That could have been my tastes that day who knows. The other was just the fried chicken wings that came with the combo order were not the best a time or two. Across hundreds of orders i have placed with these guys, that is STELLAR! Infact anytime i called just to let them know, they wanted to offer me something for it, which i declined to accept as i wasn't perturbed in the slightest- i just wanted to let them know to check it out! I have to wonder if anyone else that frequented here during the same time frame noticed how 2 of their front workers stayed there for years, until they moved too far away to stay there. Go here, try out your favorite few dishes! I will be upfront and say that i don't ever order noodle dishes anywhere, so if that is your thing I've no idea about that side of the menu! top picks by me include: General Tso's Chicken (xtra spicy ^5th power, hurt me....please.) I've been trying to find good delivery Chinese food for a while now and this definitely my top choice now. The sesame chicken was really good. The lo-mein was good and the egg rolls were tasty. It just seems like the quality of meat is much better than any other Chinese delivery restaurant I've tried. Plus they hooked me up with an extra egg roll and a couple chicken wings which were also really tasty. All and all I would recommend this restaurant to any one looking for good delivery Chinese. I was staying in South Austin for work and stumbled across China Hill on the way to where I was staying. I looked at the menu and they had one of my absolute favorite things from a Chinese restaurant and that is sizzling rice soup. That sold me on giving them a try. The restaurant is plain, hodge podge kinda place. A little cluttered but clean and the staff was very friendly. I tried the Sizzling Rice Soup. It was different than other I have had. I was good. they serve a Miso style broth with Shrimp and vegetables with a side of toasted rice. It was not the chicken based soup with the wok toasted rice patties served on the sde like I am used to. It still was good, different but good. I then tried my test dish that I use to benchmark Chinese food and that is Moo goo Gai Pan. This was tasy. Lots of chicken, vegetables crunchy and a tasty sauce. I have been eating at China Hill since I moved here 14 years ago. I've never had bad food, I've never been treated rudely or had "EYES ROLLED AT ME". I believe that most negative reviews are either lies or brought on by the customers own rude and ignorant behavior. I do believe the hair and gnats being found as I eat there in the small dining room and the last two times I ate there I had a gnat land on my plate. I'm not going to hold that against them. FFS we have outdoor dining all over Texas! You're going to rate one star because of a little bug or complain about a fifty cent refund on a cup of fifty cent fried rice, since you're charged the same price no matter your choice. I suggest that if you don't like the food go eat Panda Express' frozen food or make it yourself. Out! read more

The final verdict on China Hill? Good enough that I'll probably order from them again, but not good enough to stop me from trying other places first. I ordered their lunch special of an egg roll, soup, rice and an entree with an appetizer of Vietnamese summer rolls. Weirdly for a chinese place, the summer rolls were the best thing. The peanut sauce that came with them was probably the best that I've had in Austin. The wonton soup was good, but the wontons were round and stuffed with something I have never tasted before. The egg roll was super tiny and more like a spring roll than anything else. My Buddha's Delight was decent, if not delightful. The veggies were tasty, but the tofu was definitely overcooked. The prices are fair for the amount of food that you get, but I'd like to explore other places in the area before I commit to them as my go-to chinese place. read more

Take out: Really? There are enough reviews stating this place is way better than it actually is! Either that or they have separate chefs for take out vs. dining in. Panda Express would have tasted better. Their sizzling rice soup was egg drop soup with no sizzle int he rice at all. Just puffs of rice you add in yourself. Totally disappointed. Chewy and rough meat in the kung pao beef. I ordered chicken with basil--assuming it would taste like thai chicken basil. I can see why there are so many unhappy customers as this is the kind of place that you have to know how to use - like the infamous Soup Nazi. First, delivery is only if you're desperate. They charge for it and it takes a long time. Unless you are ordering some huge quantity of food, the delivery fee can add between 25-50% to your order. Second, it's run by kids. There is a manager somewhere but usually just 2 or 3 20-somethings. They have yet to mellow with age. Third, this is no place to go for a sit-down. It has tables but you'll quickly see the vast number of takeouts they're doing and that is where their focus is. Last, there are not a lot of standouts here. Yet I was torn between giving it "meh" or "A-OK". That's because their wonton soup is excellent. The broth is sublime. I've never had anything quite like it. And it's under $2. Sometimes we order just 6 soups and maybe - maybe - a fried rice. The rest of the menu is rather unremarkable. read more
