I've been coming to China Hill for the past 15+ years. The staff knew our family and the food was exemplary. So good that after we moved about 30 miles away we would often drive in for take out and have been for the past 8 years. It appears that there are new owners that have changed the recipes and not for the better. I can't wrap my head around the idea of buying a highly successful , established restaurant and changing what made it successful. Seems like the opposite of what you should do. I would give this place zero starts if only I could. 1st off, I ordered this for delivery when it got here i noticed they didn't bring my rice. No big deal give them a call the cashier (rudest person I've ever spoken to, and needs to work on customer service skills for sure!!) Told me that she could only refund me .50 because it's only .50 mind you I got fried rice as an UPGRADE so in reality I only got half of my meal being the meal included that and that's what i paid for. I told her that's not going to work, she answered with she would eat the chicken by it self with no rice. WOW... not only did she lie she was extremely disrespectful. After hanging up on me I will never ever order from this place again, the food was horrible and the service was just as bad. My chicken lo mein was soggy and mushy tasteless and was RED!!!!!!! China Hill is about as three star as you can get: there's a little David Lynch-like business going on around here, from the odd familial murals painted on the windows outside the place (are they getting take out? Hard to say), to the crazy stirring about inside the place, the television that always seems to be on, the lo-fi shotgun arrangement. It's not big, but the portions are. More often than not I'll pop by and pick something up if I'm in the area, and I will say that they do an excellent job with the soups I've had. The egg drop, won ton and hot & sour have in times past been perfectly amenable. And it's not at all unlikely that I end up with leftovers, even if I'm starving when I order. There's a joke in here somewhere about how regardless I'll still be hungry an hour later, but you knew that already. At any rate, China Hill does a number of things just fine, a few things particularly well and other things not as well as I'd like. And, as with most restaurants like this one, a tasty experience seems to mostly be about picking your battles with the menu. They do deliver, but when asked will always tell you that pick-up is faster. And that when it's cold outside, you never know when you'll need the warming that only some quick Chinese food can bring. read more

Reallly really good did not disappoint. I've worked in Chinese restaurants before and this place puts them all to shame. Crab Rangoon were delicious and fresh, nothing about ut was soggy or stale. Chicken was fresh and juicy not some of that beat up crap that bamboo bistro offers. Everything was fresh and flavorful and the two girls working the counter were friendly. Gave this place another chance after dropping them about 3 years ago because we found long strands of hair in our food. We placed an order for delivery. It was rather large for 10:30 in the morning (awww Thirsty Thursday nights!). We ordered China hill spicy combo lo mein, orange chicken with fried rice, 2 egg rolls and an order of crab rangoons. They said it would take an hour. They meant it. 59 minutes and $35 later the food was on the counter. The lo mein was steaming when I opened the styrofoam container. It all looked great so we loaded our plates. First bite was lo mein (my fave) and the heat was intense. It was so spicy there wasn't flavor only lip numbing hot! Disappointing and kinda confusing that it lacked flavor considering it has so many components. I mean...beef,scallops,shrimp, chicken and crab (albeit imitation) plus veggies! I was so excited for this and majorly let down. Moved on to the rice to quell the spice burn. Have to admit I'm not a fried rice fan soo...yeah. It seemed dry but flavor was pretty good. Think it tasted faintly like chicken stock. Not bad. Orange chicken (my friend's request) was actually the highlight! Surprised me. I was imagining bright orange chunks but it wasn't at all. It was redish brown white meat (I think) chicken pieces that had been fried then tossed in the sauce. Slightly spicy and sweet at the same time. So good it made the juices flow in my jaw! Think that's a good thing. Anywho, egg rolls. Even though I wanted the greasy goodness these were light. Crispy, flaky shell. Light and rather bland filling. Just meh. The rangoons looked a bit dark. Might have been fried a little too long but the shell was still edible and heavy enough to aid our recovery from last night's libations. But sadly, it was all cream cheese. Not even little flecks of red to indicate an attempt to trick us into thinking there was crab! I was offended at the absence of the beautiful lie. My friend took some of the imi crab from the lo mein and tried it with the rangoon. Thought he was a genius but it was an epic fail. In all, we wasted a lot of food. Annihilated the orange chicken though! Capped it with some coffee while trying to figure out where we can get some REAL Chinese food cuz this didn't cut it. Save your money. Don't waste your time. I did. I wondered about the quality of their food since their prices were good. Wonder no more. The food is of poor quality (which is how they must keep the prices down), the dishes use lots of fillers (if you like green peppers you're in luck) and the customer service is horrible. Oh, if you're wondering how else they save money, they efficiently cram everything into as few bags as possible - and then there's the impossible-to-open Chinese Takeout Food knot. (My bag broke and I lost 1/2 of my food - but at least I had the other half to see what their dishes were like.) I ordered 5 dishes to get an idea of their range - from flat broad noodles, to mu shu pork, egg fu young, etc. Oddly, they all tasted the same, just different textures. Who knew. What a mistake. On hold for 10 minutes. They finally find my order and it hadn't been sent to the kitchen yet because they were so disorganized. 90 minutes after I ordered my food and the order hadn't been sent to the kitchen. Ridiculous. Best "Chinese" take out in South Austin! We have ordered out to a few other places and wasn't impressed by any of them...but then again was chinese take out ever meant to be impressive?? The lady said 45 minutes and the guy showed up in 45 minutes. I was expecting at least an hour since it was a Friday night..PLUS! The containers are deceiving. They looked small but the entrees were more than enough for dinner and breakfast the next morning. The rice portions were a wee bit less than what was needed to sop up all the sauce but maybe that's just me. Love me some rice! Sesame chicken- good size chunks, not fatty, very tasty Coconut chicken- flavorful, tender chicken, too spicy for the kids to eat, it was more like Thai red curry which isn't a bad thing if you like spicy Mongolian chicken- flavorful, tender, they added in bamboo shoots which most places wont even consider, and again, too spicy for the kids. I was expecting sweet not sinus clearing spicy but it was still good. Egg drop soup- freaking awesome! not bland at all! regular fried rice- somewhat on the dry side, definitely not made to order crab rangoon- basically a cream cheese wonton. i was grateful they didn't add in artificial crab to give the appearance of taste and texture of the real thing and it was crunchy but seriously, that was a HUGE piece of cream cheese. they were my first take out I ordered in Austin, they served the best spring rolls in town. Correction, they used to serve. Made an order and phoned it in. But the estimated time was almpst 2 hours . I called the restaurant and they siad that Grubhub doesn't use data to guess ,arrivals, should be there any minute. YAY ! knock on the door 2 minutes later. I open the bag to a weird smell. Spring rolls are server chilled, room temp at most. There 2 spring rolls were some sci fi experiment gone horribly wrong. They were fused together not the normal sticky, 2 small rolls have become one large mass too hot to touch. I get back on the phone. First girl had to run it past mamasan manager. Mamasan thinks just because you make them in the morning, you have to store them somewhere like the freezer. (first mistake) so when you need 2 later, you jjust microwave them and be off. OK, one thing about a microwave, if you cook to right temp, fine. When you crank the dial for 10 minutes. yuk happens to food. Not bad enough,?? She wasn;t going to refund me for inedible food, nor send 2 replacements. The oly people who get hired for jobs now are brain dead. Vietnamese Style Spring Rolls with Shrimp - 4/5 stars These certainly weren't jumbo shrimp by any stretch and there were no special herbs like lemongrass or basil for added flavor, but I was still VERY happy with these. They were HUGE (tons of vermicelli and lettuce) which I so appreciate because I ALWAYS crave something light, fresh, and vegetarian (or nearly so) after a hearty helping of salty, fried, American-Chinese food. ...with Peanut Sauce - 2/5 Just too sweet for me, which I think is not uncommon in Americanized Chinese. I can easily make my own peanut sauce at home with Laura Scudder's smooth peanut butter, coconut milk, soy sauce, and a couple other ingredients... which I think is closer to authentic peanut sauce than this super sweet stuff. I skipped it. Basil Shrimp - 5/5 stars Interesting and DELICIOUS! My husband commented about jalapeno + basil being a "bizarre yet delicious culture-clash." He thought jalapenos were strictly Mexican and basil was strictly Italian. I corrected him. Sweet & Sour Pork - 5/5 stars Big chunks of pork, lightly battered, as promised. No disappointments here. Teriyaki Chicken - 4/5 stars First thing I noticed was it was not sprinkled with sesame seeds like one might expect. But that garnish I'm sure is optional, so no points off for that. And who cares, right? However, I'm fairly certain the chicken was "boiled" in this sauce instead of sautéed, explaining the very pale color of the chicken breast. Yet, it was all white meat, the flavor itself was spot on, and the texture was not entirely of dry, boiled chicken. General Tso's Chicken - 5/5 stars Whoever complained about the hell peppers "as garnish" in the General Tso... First of all, for that yelper to say "they should have picked the peppers out of my General Tso's Chicken before plating" is simply ridiculous. Search "General Tso's Chicken" in Google Images and tell me if you don't see any dried chili peppers on the plates. I dare you. They are PART of the dish! And the peppers ARE edible if you're man enough. I enjoyed two of them (not lying!), albeit nibble by nibble. When I was 12, I made the mistake of inadvertently eating one of these peppers whole at Fire Bowl Café here in Austin. And I learned my lesson--instant mouth-faucet. Fried rice - 5/5 stars. Not dry or overly seasoned. In fact, I added salt. Better to under-salt than over-salt, am I right? Moist and flavorful. Nom nom nom nom nom nom. White rice - 5/5 stars. Very good. Not dry or overcooked. Unsalted (to be expected, I think). I'm not a huge fan of white rice, but my boyfriend requested it. We were skeptical of this place because we were so disappointed in the last Chinese restaurant we ordered from in this area (78749) and we couldn't remember if this was the same place or not--we order Chinese very infrequently. From the "other restaurant," the servings came in HUGE, styrofoam boxes FILLED to the brim (almost comically) with food, but everything we ordered was really just piles of thick, hard batter encasing tiny, dry, kibble-sized pieces of shrimp, chicken, or beef. And so, ordering from China Hill, I prepared myself for the absolute worst, but was PLEASANTLY surprised. One more note about the price vs portion. Again, the last Chinese restaurant we ordered from offered HUGE $7 portions and the food was terrible. China Hill offers smaller $8 portions of MUCH better food. I got a menu attached to my door and decided to give this place a try in spite of all the negative reviews I've read. I've looked at their menu before and for such reasonable prices I didn't expect the food to be top-quality five-star premium- deluxe -gourmet cuisine. This is American-Style Chinese food in S. Austin, FFS! Anyway I NEVER post reviews on yelp- this is actually my first one. I ordered my three go-to meals when trying a new Chinese place- Hot and Sour Soup, Happy Family, and Orange Chicken. The order arrived within 10-15 minutes. Uh-oh! too good to be true? Soup was nice and light, not too starchy and a good start! Orange chicken was tender, not over-breaded, not over-sauced, and perfect on the flavors. Happy Family also tender, great portions, nice fresh shrimp, and had great flavors. The rice was fluffy and fresh as well. I have enough left over for like three meals! I am only writing this review because they are closed today, and I had to order (for the first time living in austin) from another Chinese restaurant. This gave me perspective on how spoiled I've been ordering from China Hill for the past 8 years. China Hill has got to be the best Chinese delivery in south Austin. The food has so much flavor and the pieces of chicken are always large in size in comparison to other Chinese deliver places. I start by saying this was our first time to try China Hill Restaurant and was hoping that we finally found a great restaurant to get Chinese food at in South Austin. Unfortunately, this was not the case. We ordered egg rolls & pork fried rice. Both were acceptable, but really nothing special. I ordered won ton soup. The broth was good & won tons were done; however pieces of shrimp were in the won tons along w/ pork. Not good - allergy to shrimp. My husband was excited to find pork chop suey on their menu. Pork chop suey is hard to find at Chinese restaurants in Austin. My husband took one bite of the chop suey and placed the lid back on the container refusing to eat any more of it. The sauce wasn't the type of sauce usually served on chop suey. I ordered General Tso's chicken. Generally, General Tso's chicken is a staple dish at any Chinese restaurant, and most restaurants provide a wonderful plate of it; however, that was not the case with China Hill. The chicken meat was extremely dry and there was very little of the sauce on the chicken itself. To me, it tasted like the chicken meat was old and had been "nuked" which could explain why it was so dry. Needless to say, I don't think we will be going back. To pay almost $53.00, for food only to throw away 90% of it, is unacceptable. read more

33 years of enjoying the House Fried Rice. 33 years ago, we conveniently lived at the Deaton Hill Apts beside CH (China Hill) with our first child. Now, we live 60 miles east. Almost every time we come to town we still get the Fried Rice plus a Sesame Chicken Combo Meal & a Large Egg Drop Soup for a picky FIL to enjoy for several days. He loves it. Not a flashy looking location - that is the worst thing I can say about this place so far. Inside it is very clean and cafe-like. I have not dined in yet, only ordered delivery and carry-out so far. But, I am supremely impressed with the food. The portions are very cost-appropriate, the taste is excellent. The staff are engaging and very friendly. Hint: I am about 300 pounds. A bottle of Crown Royal Black, vodka tonics at Key Bar, shots and cocktails at The Dogwood, booze and a rapprochement with a friend at Oil Can Harry's, and general Thursday carousing all eventually led to the moment I woke up on N's couch, fully dressed, screaming at the sun for being too bright and frantically checking that my text message outbox had been left untouched. It was. Water. I needed water. N was still asleep. I stumbled up to get some and realized I had decorated his Christmas tree. That was the main task to be done all along before we decided to "have a drink" out in the city. The tree looked great. Cute ornaments. Good for me. Once N was up, he yelled something about Chinese. Chinese would be perfection. I heard him mumble "China Hill", so I assumed that at William Cannon, they were our delivery touchstone for a location off 35 and Slaughter. I called at 10:50 AM, but no answer. They don't start taking orders until 11. Promptly at 11, I ordered (1) Crispy Egg Roll, (2) orders of Fried Crab Rangoon with Cream Cheese, (1) Egg Drop Soup, (1) Hot & Sour Soup, (1) Beef Lo Mein, and (1) Spicy Beef with steamed rice. Minimum order is $10; this came to $30 w/ delivery charge for appetizers, soup, and entrees for two hungover gay guys. About a half hour later, a delivery dude arrived at the door. It takes work to look put together; I was simply too tired to dress up for the delivery guy. I was shocked to see he didn't immediately turn to stone upon viewing my frightening, ragged Medusa-like visage. As I opened the various cartons and bowls in the kitchen, I realized with increasing horror that we were given only ONE order of crab rangoons when I clearly ordered TWO. Panic set in, and I called them back. The guy at the restaurant read my order again, and apparently he only heard me say "one". So not true. It was an honest mix-up, I guess. He offered to send the guy back over with another order, but I wasn't about to make someone drive out of their way just to bring me an appetizer. Yes, I felt something close to human compassion at that point. It might have been the hunger. The food was OK. The noodles were a tad on the greasy side (in this instance, a plus); the egg drop soup was warm and had more vegetables than expected; and if I could subsist solely on these delicious crab rangoons, I would. They all fought a valiant battle against the hangover, but the hangover eventually won. I don't think it helped that my entire life was utterly RUINED by the brazen crab rangoon omission. It's about time I wrote this review for my friends over at China Hill. They have yet to let me down. I probably eat China Hill 2-3 times a month. The best part is, they are consistent and it's just as good every time. I tend to order the Chicken Delight most often, but honestly, I have yet to try a bad dish. I keep trying other Chinese restaurants around town and I have yet to find one that even compares to China Hill. For a hole-in-the-wall Chinese place, the ingredients are legit: super fresh and quality! They are not frozen, tiny, shriveled up little veggies that have been heated up. They serve nice big portions of broccoli, carrots, bell peppers, onions, water chestnuts, green beans and more. Their fried rice is the best in town and their egg rolls are so yummy! For what you pay for, you really do get a good amount. I recommend the combo meal, you get an egg roll, your choice of soup, 2 fried chicken wings and an entree (with rice of course). I am not a fat person who just sits around and eats Chinese food all the time. In fact, I eat rather healthy and I'm from New Orleans and truly appreciate good, quality food. I have yet to dine in as they often tie a menu to my door nob to remind me to order for delivery. A Chinese blessing for anyone counting calories this place offers a "Diet Menu" no sauce just seasoning and mostly steamed. The Prawns w/ mixed Vegetables was a bit bland; but nothing a little soy and chili sauce could not fix. Also, their spring rolls are very tasty vegetarian or shrimp. Even their regular Chinese items seem a bit lighter than some with all the flavor. Let's just say the interior isn't much to look at, and parking is a hassle. However China Hill seems to be best for delivery and take out anyway. The Hot and sour soup was spicy and superb. Not just hot on a spicy scale but temperature-wise as well. I was also impressed with the General Tso's Shrimp since they (or more likely the shrimp just came that way frozen) had removed the tail shell and fin. I was expecting to do all of that work myself while I ate! The thick sauce had a different taste than I have become accustomed to with Americanized Chinese and any dish with a General Tso in front of it. It was a bit spicy, but I could have gone even higher. Service was prompt and pleasant. Don't forget to tip your delivery driver! Have been craving Chinese for days so when they placed a menu on my door today I thought it was Devine intervention! I guess I've been bad, because the food was just terrible. The Shrimp Lo Mein had very little taste, except the shrimp, which tasted dirty. The Sesame Beef was a lump of cloyingly sweet congealed sauce with chewy beef. Steamed dumplings (a generous quantity of 10) ended up being the only edible item. After eating at an amazing Chinese restaurant in San Francisco, I haven't found anything in Austin that remotely competes, which explains my mediocre review. The food here is fine. I have had sweet & sour chicken, sesame chicken and lemongrass beef vermicelli; all of which were perfectly fine. The prices are fair and delivery is top notch, which is why I keep ordering from here over and over again. When I am not feeling well or too lazy to go pick anything up for myself, China Hill is the first place I consider. This is my second favorite Chinese delivery in town, second to Beijing Wok. Yes, it's Americanized, so get over it. I enjoy their Vietnamese menu more than their Chinese menu, though if memory serves, their Sesame, Orange, and General Tso's Chicken were all quite tasty. I order the Lemongrass Vermicelli with Tofu almost religiously. It's served with fish sauce, which I use in abundance, as well as crushed peanuts, which I also use in abundance. My only complaint is that occasionally the tofu isn't thoroughly cooked, and is a little mushy on the inside, and it's cut a little too large. Other than that, I love this stuff! Their hot and sour soup is the best in town. Thick, with large, crunchy bamboo shoots and nice strips of tofu, and nice and softly spicy with that gradual heat that makes the soup so good. I've never eaten inside the restaurant, but I've been very happy with the delivery service, which I have used many times. It's prompt, the food is still hot, and the food is tasty. read more

China Hill is BY FAR the best Chinese delivery in the south Austin area. They are reasonably priced, have awesome food, and their phone service is literally the best I have ever used. You call and are greeted very professionally by a person who can pull up your account through phone number. They even have your "last order" saved in case you want extra fast ordering time over the phone. The girl I just spoke with was great and courteous, helped us customize one of our meals, and even told us an estimated time of delivery, all in the most perfect English you'll ever hear. I've never actually been inside China Hill so I can't comment on that experience, but they give great delivery! Your food is almost always to your door faster than promised and the deliverers are polite. Their menu is large and everything I've had is yummy, though the sesame chicken, hot and sour soup, and steamed dumplings are my favorites. They don't tend to include a lot of vegetables, but if you ask, they'll bring you more. read more

This is my local Chinese food delivery place, and luckily they are not bad. I actually do not know much about this place except for that I have had delivery from them 3 times and each time it was pretty good. They are pretty average for delivery time at about 45 minutes but we have never had an issue with any order. I will warn those with weak taste buds everything I have had on the menu has a bit more spice than your usual Chinese place, not that its too hot just more than usual. That being said, the Jalapeno Beef is surprisingly simple and delicious. It consists of Beef, Mushrooms, and Jalapenos. No filler veggies, no BS. This makes me very happy. The General Tso's Chicken isn't quite as good as 1st Wok on S. 1st and Stassney but its a close 2nd. The Sesame Chicken is good because the sauce has a little spice to it which I was not really used to but a nice touch. Also both of these had nothing but the bare essentials of deliciousness, no filler veggies, just chicken and sauce. All in all, China Hill is really consistent. When I went back to have my entree leftovers the next day (you'll see in my initial review I filled up on the Hot & Sour Soup and Eggrolls) I realized that the dish had about 6 pieces of shrimp and an OVERWHELMING number of water chestnuts - specifically designed, I believe, to make it look like there are more shrimp by amplifying the medallions in the dish.
