    Black pepper beef rice bowl
    Karson S.

So good!! Was looking for a late dinner place after touring around campus and found this gem! They have a very extensive menu, so I just took the recommendations from the VERY nice staff. So easy, ordering can be in person or on their kiosk (which has pictures). We went about 35 min before they were closing and they didn't mind at all! Food came out fast, tables were available and cleaned quickly, and it was such an enjoyable little simple spot on the drag. I personally got the black pepper beef rice bowl and YUM it hit the spot! Saucy, fresh ingredients - I couldn't ask for a better Chinese hole in the wall

decent chinese restaurant that is hidden along guad. very convenient for ut students craving chinese food. the price is on the higher side around $16 per dish but the portions are on the higher side. both meat dishes that we ordered, double cooked pork belly and mongolian beef, had more vegetables/onion/jalepenos than meat which was disappointing. i went with two other people and we split three dishes, we were very full afterwards and had leftovers to take home. service was very friendly, the guy at the counter didn't speak much english but brought over our rice, extra plates and chopsticks.

I am contemplating legal action. This is unacceptable. Management should be better at maintaining a sanitized kitchen. An entire screw?! That's not hard to miss and cook in with everything. I'm still shocked after finding that in there. Very dangerous and I'm feeling sick since eating as much of it as I did.

    F1. Chongqing Spicy Chicken

It's very reminiscent of classic Chinese restaurant that serves great tasting food that is rich in oil, spice, and garlic. However, I will posit it by saying that the prices are a smidge high for what I would entertain paying for Chinese food. The chongqing chicken was $18 and was more than adequately spiced. I would recommend making it extra spicy if you can handle the heat, but it surely packs a punch. My one critique is that I would enjoy more bits of chicken throughout the dish and a bit less fried pieces of nothing. The lo mein was good, a smidge bland, but serviceable. If you want a classic lo mein, I would recommend this one. Cheers!

Super close to the UT campus and the AT&T Conference Center. Ambience: This is a rustic and simple restaurant. That is almost tucked away in the very back of an alley? Service: Self-serve your drinks and order at the Counter if you want to pay cash. The lady at the counter English is limited. My Chinese was limited and I had no cash, so I used the ordering machine. You order dine-in or take out. I dine-in. So you order and then sit. When your food is ready it is brought to you in plastic container and you are given plastic silverware. My plasticware was very thin and the fork started to bend trying to grab my chicken. I really needed chopsticks but it was starting to get busy and I did not want to bother her, so I made do with my fork and spoon. Food: I watched as other people's food came out, all the portion sizes are huge. I ordered traditional Sichuan Chongqing spicy chicken extra spicy. The last time I had this dish was in Beijing and I was having a craving. In Beijing they stuff the peppers with corn meal and fry them. Here they do not stuff the red peppers, but the chicken was cooked just like in Beijing. The chicken was crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside. Since I got it extra spicy, there were jalapeno bits mixed in with the dried peppers. I could taste the Sichuan peppercorns and then I got a small hint of numbing. I recommend that you shake the dish up prior to eating. I noticed that as I got to the middle of the dish, the numbing was more noticeable compared to the top pieces. By the bottom I could feel the heat and numbing at the same time. If I am ever in the area again, will eat here again and learn the Chinese word for more Sichuan peppercorn please. They also serve American Chinese food. I looked around and those dishes did not really look good, but the place was packed with people ordering American Chinese. I will say the Chongqing chicken is worth the higher price and as close to Beijing as you can get in downtown Austin. Cleanliness: below average

Went to this restaurant for a weekday dinner. It is on campus, so street parking skills are required if you are coming from off campus. Truthfully, this restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside or the inside. It is all about the food here, which I do think is good. I ordered the garlic eggplant, spicy chicken, and combination fried rice. The eggplant is really good! This was definitely my favorite out of the items I got. The eggplant is fried and coated in this garlic soy sauce. I didn't really love the spicy chicken because the chicken pieces were SO small (pea sized?). The flavor was good but disappointed by how small and little chicken there was. The food also all came in to go containers and we were given paper plates to eat on, which I assume started as part of the pandemic. I've been to the other locations for the restaurant, and aesthetically it is much better but food is similar. A solid 3.5/5 stars for this restaurant but rounding up!

The reviews were good, but then I needed to remember that these reviews come from college students. I ordered the egg drop soup. The flavor was decent, but the viscosity was a little thicker than I like plus they don't have crispy wontons to go with it. I got spring rolls that were lukewarm and greasy. My main, chicken lomein was actually hot, but tasteless.

Really awesome place! The General Tso's Chicken was great. I'm picky about getting meat from random Chinese places, but decided to take the swing here and didn't regret it. The meat itself was fine -- could have been a little higher quality -- but it was nicely crunchy on the outside, and more importantly, the sauce was awesome. The fried rice was ok. I liked the shorter grains of rice, and how they were a little chewy. The texture was great. However, it was basically just rice and egg. Ie. there weren't any green onions or anything else fun. And I thought it coulda used a little more flavor, ie soy sauce or something. Then again it was a side to the General Tso's, and it's nice to contrast the super saucy and flavorful with something more bland. Maybe that's what they were going for. The Dan Dan Noodles were also great! They had those Sichuan peppercorns ground up in there that give you that "mala" flavor. Before going here I had read about mala but never actually experienced it. I'm so happy I finally got to experience it. It's tingly, chilly, somewhat aromatic, somewhat spicy. Very fun and interesting. And then the other flavors and spices in the noodles were good. I thought the noodles themselves were a little on the soft side though. I like them a little firmer and chewier.

F3. Fish Fillet in Chili Oil and A3. Fried Dumplings, with extra J1. Steam Rice
    Moo Sun K.

Okay, so let's start with what was good about the place. The fish in chili oil was fantastic. Not the real deal, but pretty darn close to it. What I didn't like was how the food, especially the 11 dollar dumplings, were overpriced. 33 dollars for Chinese food is a little expensive, I think.

F7. Mapo Tofu, C2. Sesame Chicken, V2. Eggplant with Garlic Sauce, R2. Chicken Fried Rice
    Reynu S.

The mapo tofu and chicken fried rice are MaPo is not spicy though. I'm not sure why since it arrived with a generous sprinkling of Sichuan pepper. There's also no pork. The C2. Sesame Chicken and V2. Eggplant with Garlic Sauce are okay but I prefer the other two much more. The quality of chicken used for C2 was a little sus and V2 was very sweet and oily (this is how it's supposed to taste but it's worth noting in case it's not your thing). This restaurant definitely has milder flavors and caters either to foreign taste or those who can't handle a lot of heat.

Super happy that my Door Dash recommended this to me!! I was craving the fish in spicy chili oil dish for a long time after trying it in Houston and was extremely surprised and delighted to find it in Austin (and available for delivery!). The dish itself is very spicy, salty (or umami? it's hard for me to explain!), oily, and maybe even a little one-note, but I just eat it with a lot of rice and I become a happy camper!! The eggplant dish was a smoother, milder counterpoint to the flavors in the fish dish. I later had these two dishes again along with the Mongolian beef to enjoy alongside my sisters on another day since I was raving about it so much, and I was impressed by that beef dish! It was flavorful. I think my sisters enjoyed the beef dish more since it was less intense than the fish, but I still love the fish in chili oil dish so much lol. I'm not Chinese, but I am impressed with the quality of these dishes. It is up to par with a similar, legitimately Chinese restaurant I go to in Houston. My coworkers who saw my initial order, including a native Chinese speaker, all seemed to be pretty impressed and envious lol. Sounds legit to me!

This is about as authentic as it gets here. The dish to beat is the Szechuan chicken. That spicy, tingly thing with the peanuts mixed in. Best version in Austin, hands down. The spice, the crunch, all of it. I eat it fresh, I eat it cold out of the fridge the next day, and it's perfect beer food. The sweet and sour chicken is the other one to get. Smart packaging too, they keep the sauce separate so the chicken shows up still crispy and you add it yourself. Little detail, big difference. Not every dish is a home run, but work through the menu and you'll land on ten or fifteen that are excellent. The steamed dumplings, the wonton noodle soup, the beef and broccoli, the fried rice, all great. We've spent a small fortune on their takeout and have zero regrets.

This might be the best dim sum in Austin now…read more I actually had never eaten at Shanghai having grown up in Austin. I didn't have their food until around COVID when we got dim sum to go a few times. I remember at that time thinking it was pretty unremarkable, and also quite expensive for dim sum. Fast forward to this year. I'm not sure if they have new ownership or new cooks, but the difference is night and day. I've been a couple of times now for dine-in in dim sum and each time was awesome. You can order off the menu or by QR code. They definitely focus on the classics but they're all executed really well. Standouts for me were the pan fried turnip cake, full of turnip and super sweet, the shrimp and leek pan fried dumplings, shrimp stuffed eggplant, and chili wonton. What makes them unique to me is that the food is all cooked to order and comes out hot and fresh. The fried items are crispy and hot and everything else you can tell just came straight from the kitchen. This avoids the one issue with carts which is that the food has been cooked who knows when and has just been sitting in a steam cart for an unknown amount of time. Also since you order off the menu, you can get exactly what you want instead of having to wait for a cart to come by. The service is always friendly and I've never had to wait to be seated, even on a weekend. If you haven't come here in awhile or written it off in the past, I'd encourage you to come and try it again. Right now it's a hidden gem but if more people realize how much better it is now, it might not be for long.
