Food at China Island has always been great and very affordable. We have been going there for 20+ years, mostly for takeout. On our last visit a week ago, we were informed that the restaurant would be shutting down permanently. As it turns out, their A/C broke down and their Shenandoah Plaza landlord refuses to repair it, or contribute to the cost of. The owner can't afford it, so after many years they'll be closing, which is a shame. read more

This is my go to for Chinese food. I love their eggrolls, sweet & sour chicken and Singapore noodles. Recently ordered General Tso's and chicken lo mein here and they were both delicious. I prefer this to all other Chinese restaurants in the area and will drive further to go here. I've only ever gotten take out but the inside looks very calm and pleasing. We had to ask for a tea twice and then we asked for noodles to dip in the duck sauce. Then the waitress told me we cannot give you the noodles now because they they'll go on the menu. I visited for the first & last time today! wow What a big mistake! I ordered shrimp fried rice and got chicken fried rice. No problem. they exchanged it, no problem. I thought. The fried rice had rice, onion and soy sauce. Okay. I guess that's their recipe! No other vegetables. Not my taste but I didn't complain. When the check came I noticed that an additional 20% fee was charged & labeled as S/C so when we went to the cashier desk I asked if the tip had already been charged and the waitress said yes. My husband and I got take out from this place last night. They accommodated our 8:50pm take out order and I was surprised the food was so good as I had little faith in Chinese food in Florida (New Yorker here). Fried rice tastes "healthy" and not oily, chicken and broccoli was good, though I did not get it with brown sauce :( (I didn't realize I had to specify). You can tell they use good ingredients. Good local Chinese food located in Shanendoh Square Davie. No frills here. If you order in, they give you crunchy noodles with duck sauce and spicy mustered sauce and hot tea. The combo deals are a great value. They come with soup, egg, fried rice and a full sized main dish. They also give you a choice of vanilla, chocolate or pistachio ice cream. The combos cost between $12 and $15. The staff is really sweet. Food is fresh and comes out quck. The decor is minimal. I used to visit China Island every Friday as a treat at the end of my week, but after my most recent experience, I will not be returning. From the moment I walked in, I wasn't greeted, which already set a negative tone. The lady who took my order had a bad attitude right from the start. She kept talking over me as I was placing my order and was generally rude throughout the entire interaction. It also felt like she assumed I couldn't afford the food, as she kept stating the prices as I was ordering, even though I was clearly looking at a takeout menu that had the prices listed. It was a condescending attitude that made me feel uncomfortable. The restaurant is always empty when I go, and after this encounter, I can understand why. With service like this, it's no surprise that they're not drawing in customers. I decided to take my business elsewhere that day, and sadly, I won't be coming back. The food was mediocre, it's what you would expect from an American Chinese restaurant, maybe a little less. I ordered the Mandarin style lo mein, and my mom got the Singapore noodles. The server, however, did not get my mom's Singapore noodles order. It was probably for the best, since some of the meat in my dish was cold. Not to mention everything tasted the same. We also got two egg rolls, which weren't bad, but they weren't anything to write home about either. We could also hear a woman in the back sneezing a lot while we were eating, which helped to kill my appetite. Inside, the restaurant looks kind of drab as well. After reading some of the reviews, I felt motivated to leave one. We have ordered from here several times during the pandemic, and have been VERY HAPPY every time. We lived in New York for over 30 years, and my wife is of Chinese descent and grew up just outside Chinatown in NYC. We have had a LOT of outstanding Chinese food over the years. And this is one of our all-time favorite local restaurants. Please don't take that to mean that this is super-authentic Chinese cuisine (which many people would not prefer anyway). But the food is very well prepared, fresh, and most important, not too sweet - something we can't stand. We've had their General Tso's (crispy, even when taken out! rare!), Kung pao chicken, chicken with cashew, special fried rice, and a few others. All very good. And their wonton soup is one of the best I've had in a long time. And even my wife commented on how much she liked their egg rolls. Another bonus - their portions are VERY generous. In particular, their dinner combinations are great. I'm going back tonight to supplement the leftovers from last night's dinner. HIghly recommended if you live in this area! read more

It's unfortunate, but having to downgrade my previous positive review. Have had a handful of good experiences here, however not once but TWICE we have had issues with foreign objects in our food. The last time we dined in the restaurant my husband found a piece of a broken plate in his food. We brought it to the attention of management, who comp'd the dish and apologized. I hadn't eaten here since (6+ months) but decided to give it another try, and order take out. I was chewing a bite of krab Rangoon when I realized there was something in it. It was too late, and it chipped my tooth. Had been giving this place a second chance but it's no longer worth the risk. And I can see from another reviewer that they found metal in their food!
