Maybe they were having a bad day bec other people seem to like this place. But this was the first time I ordered from them and I was not pleased. I ordered Sweet and Sour Shrimp and some of the shrimp had clearly been left over, prob from the day before. I also ordered Mongolian Beef. I've had Mongolian Beef from other Chinese fast food places locally which were good. This was the worst I ever tasted. Not much beef and what was there were very small pieces. The dish was mostly cabbage or something cabbage-like, and onions, and it was sickeningly sweet. Inedible. I spent $15 on it and had to throw it out. Stopped in for a quick lunch and had the chicken and broccoli with garlic sauce and it was a very tasty garlic sauce and not greasy like some are. The portion was huge so I got several meals out of it for under $6. I even asked for extra garlic sauce and they gave me a nice size separate container and did not charge me. Classic New York Chinese food. Egg rolls are delicious. The Sweet and Sour chicken "bits" are always cooked just right. I hate when you get your sweet and sour home and the chicken "bits" are all over cooked. They make them all crunchy. And it doesn't matter how much I drown those crunchy little devils in the sweet sticky ultra red nuclear sauce, they still jar your teeth. China Star has never disappointed. I give this 5 star because their rice is actually flavorful. The Chinese places here in Tampa are not good...at all so when I found this gem, I just had to leave a review. I'm a lover of all Asian food and I must admit, some of my favorite things to eat is fried rice and their rice is really good. Just the taste I'm looking for when ordering Chinese food. Their rice does have veggies in it and I'll def order again without the veggies because they didn't seem to be cooked all the way through so I'll take a star off for that. I'll be the first to admit- it may sound just a tad crazy to be a mega fan of a China Star. I live about a block away from this China Star so when I'm feeling like having chinese food (read: often), I just drive down the street. Therefore, not only am I a fan because it's close for me personally, but they are also fast, efficient, and the food is so good! I've ordered just about everything on their menu over the past 5 years and have never had a complaint. The employees are super friendly too, which isn't too common elsewhere. read more

The the past few times I've gone I didn't enjoy the food. I took a piece of "chicken" and removed the breading, and the size of the chicken under the breading was the size of my pinky finger nail. Rip off. And the sauce is just flavored and colored simple syrup and is way too sugary. read more

I take back everything I said in my previous review, aside from the terrible customer service; that I still stand by. To start, the food itself was poor. When we arrived twenty minutes after we placed our order (more than enough time to get food together in an empty chinese food place), we had to wait another ten. The food was eventually handed to us by a kid no older than seventeen, who wasn't wearing gloves, wiped his nose with his hands, and did nothing to sanitize afterwards. We definitely didn't leave a tip. When we got it home, it was cold in spots, the chicken I received was pink, and the ham in the fried rice was black. This was definitely concerning to us, but after a sniff check, and about a minute each in the microwave, we thought the food would do. We ended up with food poisoning. My fiancé and I didn't realize it was the chinese food until after we'd had it for dinner that night, and lunch the next day. We were out to dinner the day after and we had to leave early because my partner felt terrible. Almost as soon as we got home, he was violently ill -something that never happens- and was stuck in the bathroom for the majority of the night. I myself was not handling the food well either, but I didn't eat the entirety of my leftovers like my fiancé, so I didn't have it nearly as bad. Moral? Don't eat here if you want to keep lunch in your stomach. I don't expect the world of chinese food as it is, but this place shouldn't even be open. read more

Not the best Chinese takeout. Their Hunan chicken is really good. I ordered their Orange beef and asked for the sauce on the side. The breading on the beef tasted ridiculously stale. When I cut the beef in half, I noticed that they put the thinnest piece of beef so all I tasted was the breading. I guess I can say that the food is either a hit or miss. Customer service is not really that good. The only reason I order from here is because I work right across the street but other than that I probably would not even waste my money. read more

I have had a lot of Chinese take out in the Tampa,FL area, & I can say China Star is consistently one of the best for quality of food, service, & cleanliness. All of the Chinese take out restaurants basically have the same menus, so you know to put you over the top from the rest of competitors in this group, you better put out good quality food, which China Star does. They do killer business from the U.S.F. crowd & surrounding Temple Terrace living community. This Chinese take out restaurant is much better than some of those more highly touted "stuck up" south Tampa Chinese take out places. Keep up the good work, China Star. For Americanized-Chinese this place is consistent and good. Late hours and cheap lunch specials that go til 330pm. Lunch specials are huge and come with pork fried rice and a can of soda. It's usually enough for two meals for me. They do a vegetarian, mei fun, chow fun, curry, and all the regulars. Family owned. Worst Chinese food I have ever had. Extremely expensive for a poor quality meal. My wife and I ordered chicken fried rice and chicken lo mein. Neither of us could even attempt to eat these items as the chicken was of such a low quality. I personally bit into four bones while trying to eat this meal. I grew up in Flushing, NY, which is 70% Asian, so I know good Chinese food. China Star has great New York style Chinese food! They're really consistent when it comes to food quality. The meat is always cooked perfectly (and it's never mystery meat). I recommend ordering chicken lo mein and orange chicken. Portion sizes are huge, they're quick, and it's pretty inexpensive for what you get. I'm never going to another Chinese food place in Tampa again. read more
