Of course I had to come back to Engs for a quick lunch with my mom this time. We really love their salt and pepper pork chop because of how tender the meat and well seasoned the meat is! This restaurant has been "pick-up only" for a while during the pandemic so I'm glad we were finally allowed to dine in for food this time around! We also ordered the beef soup and I made the waitress aware that I'm only allowed to drink clear liquids for now since I recently had surgery so I would appreciate if she added more broth and lessened the noodles but instead of lessening the noodles she came back to our table to refill the broth! I bought the Shrimp Egg Foo Young lunch special and Crab Rangoon. The lunch special came with egg drop soup and it was horrible. The texture was slimy like raw egg yolks. There was no flavor or seasoning to it and it made me nauseous. I wanted to give them a fair shot, so I did continue with my lunch. Very underwhelming. The fried rice has no flavor. The Egg Foo Young also, had no flavor and was hard around the edges. The gravy tasted weird. I at least half of the Egg Foo Young hoping it would get a little better. It didn't. We ordered 4 kinds of Chinese fried rice, chicken, pineapple and shrimp, kimchi, and pork fried rice. We picked up our food and went back to set up and eat. The rice was very good, the kimchi had a really good kick, the pineapple and shrimp was really good. We were enjoying all of the rice, until we noticed a thick hair in the chicken fried rice. We didn't know what to do, since all of the group had taken a bite from the chicken fried rice. We looked at each other in disgust. I guess we won't be ordering from this place anymore :( we are not sure whether to call for a refund, since we paid in cash. read more

You're going to notice many newer reviews are not good, while the old ones are excellent, here's why. I have been coming to Eng's for several years and always thought of it as best in town. Recently the food has not been good and I noticed that all new people were working. The sweet lady was gone from counter. She spoke little English but hustled and worked and you never waited. And the food was to die for. Bunch of kids in there now and my Salt & Pepper Pork Chop was terrible. I called and was told last owner "retired." Well that makes sense, thought I. I am saddened to say this but it's just no good anymore. That's three visits since change, so maybe it'll get better. So sad. Being Chinese in RP, we usually aren't ordering Chinese take out - but it's the pandemic, and one can pickup sandwiches and other fast food only so many times. We've tried the area Chinese places at least once and that includes Eng's, but surveying our options today I chose Eng's. The criteria I used was chow fun and Eng's offered fish fillet chow fun (with vegetables) which is a traditional Cantonese offering. This and being able to get dry style beef chow fun is another clue. To be able to do this for $10.25 including tax is somewhat unheard of. Called the order in from Target on Howard and was told 10-15 minutes. I expected to wait, but by the time I took care of paying, my order was brought up to the front. Packaged in a rectangular recyclable plastic tub, the portions were a good balance of bok choy (plus some carrots), fish, and noodles. The noodles have some wok crisp that's softened by the sauce from the veggies/fish. (don't expect crispy noodles because no one wants to serve you dry fish/veggies - more crisp, maybe ask if they can crisp their dry style beef chow fun for you). Packed inside, napkins, plastic fork & spoon, soy sauce and fortune cookie. Could do without the extra plastic, but at least not styrofoam - (paper cartons?). From the menu, it would seem you could pull together a pretty good multi-course meal for home or dine-in when that returns. read more

If I could give this place zero stars, I would. I found the food gross, and actually inedible. I threw most of it away. The bbq pork was 95% blobs of fat (the picture I posted doesn't show the rest of the fat that I had already put in the garbage). The orange beef was 75% breading that had turned to mush due to the heavy gooey, overly sweetened sauce (I tried to take a good pic for you, but the heavy orange sauce made it hard to see anything but the sauce). The moo shu pork tasted like the generic brown sauce that bad Chinese food places try to call "garlic sauce," that tastes nothing like Chinese garlic sauce. And the flavorless egg rolls were super small, just slightly bigger than a roll of quarters. Eng's has been serving quality Chinese food for many years now. One of the best things about Eng's are there tremendous lunch specials. Their lunch specials are from 11am to 3pm and is $5.85 plus tax dining in. They have a variety of choices to choose from for lunch from satay, Mongolian, orange beef or chicken, lo mien, vegetables etc. There lunch special also includes shrimp fried rice, an egg roll, and a soup, either egg drop or sweet and sour. For the price, quality is really good. Service is fast and the owners are quite friendly as well. They also have fruit freeze drinks, but those are best for summer in my opinion. read more

I have a love hate relationship with Eng's. At present the only two items I would consider purchasing here (in the future) would be pot stickers and bubble tea. Many times I think they are just okay and other times I can't believe how good the food is and every single time I wonder why the service is not consistent. One of the daughters of the company, she's got to be in HS or college, this one gal does a great job. Her co-workers or siblings do not do as close a job in giving good customer service. If it's the younger male that is helping you, a tall and lanky fellow which looks aloof, this dude is lazy. Never packs food for you, instead will hand you a container and bags to do the work yourself. Also he is not specific to details, I've had to return dishes because it wasn't what I ordered. My last visit was for catering over the summer and since then have not returned. I spent about four Benji's on food for an anniversary party for family. Despite making plans and pricing with an owner weeks in advance, when the time came I was over charged and charged additional for appetizers I was told (earlier) I would receive complimentary. Also was told there would be no delivery charge and then was called back and told that the driver feels he needs to be compensated. Strange, the delivery is done in house, so why would I need to be consulted with that??? Whatever the F that means. Idiotic. All of these changes were placed on me on the date of the event, so it left me no time to call someone else for catering. With hours before the event and having specified a time for the food to be delivered, the driver drops it off a full three hours early. WTF! Thank goodness I had family nearby to help out, we had to pack the kitchen full of food and keep it like a sauna to keep the food from A) going bad in the sun B) being overcooked or over warmed C) being wilted, soggy and looking like buffet food which sits under heat lamps all afternoon. P.s. we were not given any accessories to aid in keeping the food warm nor did the delivery guy care to come back later at the specified time. Let's not forget that they gave a bag full of more than 100 packets of soy, sweet & sour sauce and hot mustard. What a waste, I have this bag of sauces at home and do not know what to do with them. In striving to be more conscious of waste, it'd be more prudent for them to give you a bottle of the different sauces. FYI Eng management; but since this is Chicago and not the West coast where people care more about such details. I figure they won't care. Disappointing. Inadequate. Rankled with their service. I'd rate Eng's at about 3.5 stars for a place for a cheap, casual Asian meal. We dropped in for a family meal, and found they have a massive menu - Cantonese, Mandarin, Thai, Vietnamese, and Korean style offerings, as well as an extensive bubble tea menu. The place is basically an unhyped version of Joy Yee Noodle. The servings are large, decent tasting (a couple dishes we had were slightly salty), and a great value. $80 fed a party of 6, including a couple of mango bubble teas. The dining room is plain, large, and very casual. It's also BYOB with no corkage. We tried between us: Salty pepper squid Chicken chow mein Beef with Chinese broccoli Chicken eggplant casserole Korean stonepot bowl Whole red snapper We wouldn't hesitate to try again some time for a cheap eats sort of outing. I have been A customer for years. Despite some of the employees that have bad attitudes I continues to dine at this restaurant because their food is good. Today was the final straw for me. She made some bad comments racial slurs and when I said to her you are a racist because of what you just said she said I know. Then she tried to change her story and said I lied but I have witnesses. I asked for her boss and the boss was hiding in the kitchen and then she lied and said the boss wasn't there when I just heard his voice then she said she doesn't know when her boss is coming back. Our family has enjoyed the flavors of Eng's for a few years, but our most recent visit was a bit disappointing, our chicken Lo mein had no flavor, it was really bland, it was just noodles with some grease and flavorless sauce. The lunch special comes with shrimp fried rice, which we always looked forward to, there are always visible little shrimps in there, but this time, there was minimal little shrimps. Maybe it was just a off day for the kitchen. Side note, when we were picking up our food most recently, 7/24/2022, their dinning room is finally opened once again!!! We might need to give them a try in a few weeks, dine in, since the food is always better when we had our dine in experience, not necessarily for the service, but the food is hot and fresh!!! read more

The food is priced reasonable, however, their food is low quality. We ate inside restaurant and it was dirty. You don't realize just how filthy it is till you are seated and start to touch things. Customer service was a bit on rough side meaning the waitress seemed impatient when asked questions. Ordered 2 Lunch Special Sesame Chicken. Huge portions and served in a boat style serving dish. Honestly is was hard to get thru and ended up having them take it away. The chicken pieces tasted dry and hard. Seemed like they were old and recooked. The sauce was meh. Rice had those little dirty shrimps in it. Egg roll Was ok. Soon after leaving we felt Ill with upset stomachs and sweats. I personally wouldn't dine or take out here ever again. Very good food!! Before heading over to the bar across the street, this is where we all meet up every week. My cousin has this thing for their "Crispy Beef"... does anyone know of another chinese place that serves that? We have yet to find that anywhere else. Anyway, their smoothies are good, but I've had better elsewhere. Their fried rice, pot stickers and string beans dish are all good! We're moving to West Ridge, so we have to find a good Chinese restaurant. This one seemed to have good reviews, so we started here. I really liked the food here. I'm living in the suburbs now, and the Chinese I have had here is (in my opinion) horrible. I had Kung Pao Chicken and Egg Flower Soup here at Eng's, and both were great. I was taken aback by the portions! The egg flower soup was $3 per bowl - they brought it out in a bowl, then there was a smaller soup bowl that you served yourself in. The large bowl held almost four bowls of soup - for $3. Likewise, the Kung Pao was cheap for such large portions. I just had a pop here; I see that everyone likes the smoothies, but I am *really * picky about smoothies (must have real fruit, yogurt, juice), so I avoid them at any place that isn't a smoothie bar. As much as I liked this place, I don't know if I would eat here again. I might order out, but this restaurant was too freaking loud. It became apparent that others found the smoothies a big draw, because the blender was on almost constantly. The interior of the restaurant is such that it doesn't quiet the sound of the blender at all - in fact, it was really, really loud. That was distracting and annoying, so it's not a place I would eat in. That's why I gave it 4 stars. I was sure I had written a written a review for Eng's a long time ago, yet I don't see it, so here goes... My family and I have been ordering from Eng's for well over 25 years now. They used to be a small hole in the wall that basically only did carry out, and then they expanded to the large facility that they are now with ample seating in a nicely decorated, bright dining room. (I still believe they mainly do mostly carry out, though, because while you'll see several tickets lined up on the counter, there's usually only one or two tables occupied when we stop in.) In 25 years, I believe I've only dined in once! In any event, their Chinese food is solid. I particularly like the Shrimp egg foo young, which is the best I've ever had, anywhere. You get two large patties with a small order, which is enough for two meals for me alone. I'm not even a fan of gravy, yet the brown sauce in this dish is so tasty! It is truly delicious. I last had this at another place and in comparing it to Eng's, I was very disappointed! All of their soups are good. Try the hot and sour when you're under the weather; it will clear your sinuses for sure! Our other favorite dishes are the chicken fried rice or combination fried rice, Mongolian beef, General Tso's chicken, my daughter loves their lo mein, and they have really good shrimp egg rolls and crab rangoon. (Again, some of the best I've had, and we've tried SEVERAL Chinese places in the area.) Oh and I can't forget to mention the Bubble tea! They have several flavors and they're made fresh, with fresh fruit. I also love their Thai iced coffee. So good! We always pick up, and service is always fast. They have nice lunch specials too and for all orders you receive something free after you spend a certain amount. (There are coupons on the carry out menus but when I call in our order I just ask what our free options are and they tell me.) This is our go to place for good Chinese. Try it! read more

My review is based on DELIVERY. Eng's has a very large menu that includes Chinese and Korean food choices. They also have a drink list which lists teas and freezes with tapioca. It is your typical Americanized Chinese restaurant. We ordered the Sweet and Sour Chicken, Chicken Fried Rice, Beef Lo Mein, Mango Tapioca Freezes and a few other things. They were all typical and fairly priced ($5 - $12 for an entree minus appetizers or drinks). The Mango Freeze was the standout for me. It tasted like it was made with real Mango and not some kind of mix. that'll run you $3. Here's the drawback - it was a Tuesday night and we waited for over an hour and 20 minutes for delivery. Seemed a little out of control considering the place was only a 5 - 10 minute drive away from where we were. We called about 2 times and each time we were told they were on the way nearby. I order from Eng's rather frequently. While it is certainly not the best Chinese food by any means, it's close to home & I stick to ordering the same dishes. Today, I decided to try their Beef Lo Mein. I picked up my order, brought it home & the dish smelled & tasted like seafood. The meat itself smelled as if it were stored or cooked with fish. Plus, this is not the first time I have experienced this from Eng's. Rather than toss a $9.00 container of food, I decided to call Eng's & alert them to the problem this time. The younger woman who answered the phone listened to me explain my situation & then insisted there was no seafood in the dish. I explained that while I believe she thinks that, the beef in my meal smells clearly of fish & that I would not be eating it. She consulted with an older woman regarding the matter, came back to me & again said there was no seafood, but maybe I was tasting garlic. Ummm, no. I again clearly stated that as a customer who orders from them regularly, I can assure them that I am tasting seafood. Her response was "OK, thank you". I'm willing to give any restaurant a pass on one bad meal. In fact, in the case of Eng's, I've turned a blind tastebud more than a few times! However, there is no excuse for blatant disregard for a customer! Eng's had a chance to make it right by offering me a refund or in-restaurant credit, but they offered nothing but excuses. I really enjoyed the 90s feel of the walls (it was PINK) and I truly enjoy supporting small, family owned businesses. Their lunch special is SO affordable and definitely worth it- for 5.25 you get a huge "boat" shaped plate with rice, an egg roll, and a main course- plus fortune cookies. They have a variety of choices and the food is filling- and enough for leftovers. Their bubbleshakes are really yummy!
