It was my first time coming in. I was greeted with blank stares, but a nice lady took my order. I ordered 2 dinner specials, a sweet & sour chicken with fried rice and crab Rangoon, and shrimp broccoli with fried rice and egg roll. They were so kind they gave an extra crab Rangoon. The pictures looked amazing online. Couldn't wait to try it when I got home. When I opened my shrimp and brocolli, the shrimp was huge and it still that that seafood taste to it, I just wasn't fond of it. The fried rice was good and so was the ragoon. The eggroll, had ginger in it, and personally I don't like that, but that's preference. My husband got the sweet and sour chicken. That was good. We tried this for the first time as I was looking for somewhere that was open for delivery Friday evening and was craving Chinese. I got the four seasons which is different meat with the brown sauce and vegetables and it was very tasty. Lots of food. It came with a side of pork fried rice and I got egg flour soup and pork egg foo young. Oh yeah, I also got steamed dumplings and those are really good. I was pleasantly surprised and I will definitely order again!!!! It's a little pricey but worthhh. All I order is the Mei Fun noodles because they're my favorite and didn't see anyone else serving them. Maybe an appetizer here and there. Found this spot across from me and hasn't failed me yet. They've got seating inside but because of the size of the place, it seems better just to order takeout. We ordered delivery to a local hotel. They delivered our food quickly as we were only a mile away. It was delivered with no paper plates, plastic utensils, enough condiments or even napkins. Who takes utensils and plates to a hotel? We called the restaurant and after a very short conversation they hung up on my wife. I DO NOT recommend them at all. HORRIBLE!!!! Do not waste your money. It's disgusting and the owners don't have any manners. To start, the male owner was so condescending and rude. Let me set the scene, I am of Chinese descent so I look Chinese. I order my food and he later says to me, "You Chinese?," to which I reply , "Yes." Then he asks, "You don't speak Chinese," to which I reply , "No." Then he says, "I can tell!" Had I not already paid, I would have walked out. For starters, you don't know my history, so don't f-ing cop an attitude with me like I'm a disappointment to be spoken down to. My family comes from Central America, I'm Latina and I speak Spanish. I stayed to wait for my takeout and gave him the benefit of the doubt that the rest of my experience was going to be ok. Boy was I wrong. My Grandfather who immigrated from China to Central America knew how to cook, really well. So I may not speak Chinese, but I KNOW good Chinese food and this is not it! It's not even descent. For starters, the chicken lo mein was flavorless. And the chicken lacked any texture. It was so over tenderized, it was mushy. The orange chicken is gross. The chicken is par fried and they literally fry it again, make the sauce and just toss the chicken in it. So the batter is soggy and has no crispiness to it. And the chicken is overcooked, stringy and dried out. And theres something funky in the sauce that makes your tongue feel raw after eating a few pieces. The white rice that came with the chicken was the best thing to come out of that kitchen. But here's the kicker and final straw. On all the tables, there are big bottles of sirracha. And on the wall next to the register there's a sign that says Chili oil is 95c per oz. But no chili oil on the tables. Ok, noted. So when my food is ready, I ask if I can get a container to take some sirracha to go. This is where the female owner comes into the story. She says it's 50c to take some home. I reply, 'So if I eat here, it's free, but if I take some home, I have to pay for it?' She says, ' Yes,' and proceeds to shove little packets of hot sauce in my hand, saying it's the same hot sauce. And I emphasize to her, ' This is the same sirracha?' And she say, 'I no lie." Lady that generic, vinegary, red dye #5 crap is NOT the same sirracha and you ARE a liar, the picture proves it! And just so you know I couldn't dine in - even if I really wanted the free sirracha - because there's a funky smell in the restaurant! read more

First time ordering. I got the Mongolian beef and orange chicken with pork fried rice. Everything was perfect and the portions were big. The food was ready on time and really a little early. Ordering online is easy and their app is really user friendly. The restaurant is small but clean and the two people that were at the counter were extremely nice. With Chinese food being hard to find in this area, these guys have been consistently good in my opinion. Be aware that this is not much of a fancy dine-in restaurant, but a small hole-in-the-wall mom-n-pop place. An excellent option for "pickup". Here's what I like and don't like about China Wok: : Parking : They're located within a small block next to Domino's and Burger King, so there's only a few spaces to park. But I've always parked in front of the place. Most nights are safe for pickup, but I've been here with sketchy individuals roaming. Again, I'll emphasize to just do "pickup" or opt for delivery. :: Dining / Staff :: Before covid they really only a few tables to dine-in at. During covid, there were no tables. Post-covid, they brought the tables back out. For the most part it's clean and OK to dine-in if you choose. As for the staff working there, I have only dealt with the family running the place and they've always been nice to me. No heavy conversations, but they make sure my order is right. No issues. ::: What's on the Menu ::: The good stuff I've tried and enjoyed: ~ Veggie Spring Rolls (2pc - $3.49), sometimes part of the order. We have continued to enjoy this spot, but have noticed subtle changes over the years. The one plus that continues is their ability (and willingness to) to accommodate my wife's gluten free needs. Visiting from Texas and heard there is some really good Chinese food in Oregon so I had to make sure to give somewhere a try. I am glad I chose China Wok. The food was fresh, good, and seasoned to perfection. The rice was was flavorful and fluffy just right. The portions were large enough for multiple people to eat off of one plate multiple times. I loved that they offer different levels of spicyness for your entrees. I got the highest level and it did not disappoint. The service was beyond fast! I placed an order for pickup between 6:00-6:15PM and we walked in at 5:59PM and guess what was just being stapled? Our order. Being new to the area, I wanted to try new places. This place was recommended so I ordered Mongolian Beef, General Tso's chicken and kung pao shrimp. Very hard to tell the difference on taste for these dishes. They all kind of blend in and possible have the same base sauce. The beef was dark and on the tough side. The shrimp was big and had good spice, and the chicken was on the sweet side. I can easily tell they use a lot of soy sauce on their dishes that't why the food seems to be on the darker shade along with their fried rice. The wait was long so preorder your food. I'm a huge fan of the combo. I get to try different things. I don't like to commit to one thing anyway. I ordered the general tso lunch special. Came with fried rice and an egg roll. Not a fan of the fried rice. Not sure what was up with the grains of rice but they were too dry. Maybe that's the word. They also had unevenly cooked onions carrots and peas and that was it. The egg roll was a little greasy and filled with cabbage. Not as offensive as I've had before. Not good by any stretch but did no harm. The chicken was probably the best general Tso I've ever had. The perfect blend of spicy sweet and pungent. The breading was nice and even and stayed crispy but not heavy in the sticky sauce. This is my family's go-to for takeout, and I've learned why this week: It tastes like back home. I've seen a bunch of transplanted East Coasters in the comments, and I share their enthusiasm for China Wok with one caveat: It isn't Chinese food here that's the problem, it's us. In the New York metro and even back home in Boston, the prevalent Chinese cuisine comes from long-tenured Cantonese places. They're where my grandparents first tried char siu and crispy-skin chicken. har gao and chow fun. It's where my sister and I first went to hours-long dim sum meals in palatial banquet halls and sampled whatever rolled by. While Oregon is replete with Sichuan, Shandong, Beijing and Taiwanese cuisine, Cantonese places are far more rare and seemingly dying. So when China Wok opened in Hillsboro offering the illuminated menu and counter take-out that I get back in Boston and that my family's enjoyed as comfort food for generations (my uncle would get pu pu platters delivered for his New Year's birthday until the day he died), I'm thinking we weren't the only folks who felt we'd been thrown a lifeline. I love the Chinese cuisines that I've been introduced to since my early education in Cantonese dining, but there'll always be a familial tie to egg foo young, lo mein and Mei fun. There will always be that sensory memory that comes with unfolding the boxes for the first time and dishing everything out. To the guy complaining about "fresh"... buddy, that isn't the point. If I can get my orange chicken, fried dumplings, crab rangoon and lo main made hot and delivered in what seems like an impossibly short timeframe, I'm here for it. This is the food you order when you're getting ready to watch a Nora Ephron double feature on a cold winter night. This is what you order when the state survives a heat spell and you want one night without cooking. This is what you order when it's rained for the 25th-straight day and it's seeped into your bones. Within the Portland metro, China Wok deserves five stars. China Wok is our go to place for good American Chinese food, something that is actually pretty hard to find in the Portland metro. I love authentic Chinese food too (hello Tang Dynasty), but sometimes I just crave the saucey, fried stuff we used to get in our college days on the East Coast. I'm talking General Tso's Chicken, Singapore Chow Mei Fun, Shrimp with Lobster Sauce and spicy green beans... this is usually our go-to order. We always get delivery so I haven't been here in person, but the food is always hot and fresh, coming right around the estimated time. The food has been consistently good over the last three years we've been ordering from here. While the General Tso's doesn't quite match up to what we remember, it's pretty close and a heck of a lot closer than other renditions we've had in Portland. We just add a bit of sriracha since it's never that spicy. Singapore rice noodles are great and filled with all the meats - chicken, pork and shrimp. We've tried different variations of the shrimp dishes but our favorite is the shrimp with lobster sauce. I don't really like the non-fried chicken but that's normal for me with Chinese food - it's the tender marinated kind that a lot of Chinese places have. The meat is decent quality and they give a pretty generous portion even in the shrimp dishes. I can't really speak to the pork or beef options - we don't normally eat them. Another noteworthy point is their rice. I usually don't like the rice at Chinese places that much because it's a longer and drier variety than what I grew up with in Japan. China Wok seems to use a pretty moist medium grain. If I had to guess, it's closer to a Calrose or Nishiki type medium grain Japanese rice. I love that. It's actually good pretty good rice and we tend to order an extra side of rice just to have some handy. Overall, China Wok is your solid neighborhood American Chinese joint. The food is good, the price is not too expensive, and they do a lot of my favorite dishes well. Check this place out if you haven't yet - you're missing out! read more
