The Peking Duck. It's obviously their specialty - walk into this restaurant and they basically expect you to order one. It's $35 for a whole duck (which I personally think is kind of expensive, but maybe it's okay?). The duck was roasted well, and carved well - the chef even took the liberty to cut off the really fatty parts. The skin was crispy which my mom really enjoyed, and the meat was tender. It was kind of oily, but I think I'd come back here for the duck. The duck sauce. Far too sweet. Took me a couple of tries but I ended up taking the tiniest drop of the sauce, spreading it thinly over the wrapping skin, and masking the sweetness even more with a hearty helping of the green onions. The wrapping skin. Kind of thick, but okay. The other stuff. The selection of dishes outside of the duck was actually kind of disappointing for a Chinese restaurant. They didn't even have pea shoots (dou miao)! What kind of Chinese restaurant doesn't have pea shoots? In fact, the only vegetable they had available was Chinese broccoli. We also tried the 8 treasure tofu hot pot (ba zhen dou fu bao) - it was okay, nothing spectacular - the tofu was good but the chicken in it was kind of dry and tasteless. Anyways. From the first visit, the service was prompt attentive and very accomodating. We were in a hurry to grab some food and dash to meet up with some family. Not only did they start the food before my other half could finish ordering, but they were quick to wrap the remaining food in a bag for us and deliver our bill quickly. The food was spectacular to say the least. My boyfriend ordered the crispy beef having judge previous attempts by others as less than amazing, he thought he would give it a shot at China Wok, low and behold a new favorite was the outcome. It was perfectly cooked and seasoned. I ordered the spicy beef noodle bowl, which they gladly said they could 'tone down' or remove the spice completely if I needed. Not only was it delcious and the meat so juicy, I couldn't stop noticing how delicious the broth and vegetables were! I have tried many of chinese places, but this one we have not been disappointed with. We made reservations for a family dinner on Christmas Eve. Upon arriving to a packed restaurant, we were told they were not going to honor our reservation because too many people had showed up that evening. What?! We then schleped our entire family - including two infants - through freezing weather to a very nice Thai restaurant (Thai's Corner) down the street. My family eats here whenever we want duck. Like other Yelpers have said, this is the best duck at least in the Tyson's area! Today four of us got a full duck and it was delicious as usual. The duck meat is tasty and tender and I love making the wraps out of them. We had some leftover to take home. Today, we also got Chinese watercress (or kong xing cai if you are looking for the Chinese pronunciation). I absolutely love this vegetable and I really only eat it at restaurants. They only put a couple pieces of garlic so they really left the taste up to the vegetable itself. The way they cooked it was not what I was expecting. This one was a bit more soggy/less crunchy, however, I still devoured it. We also got a bamboo tips with pork meat dish. It is not listed on the regular menu, but on the menu of specials that is written completely in Chinese. The bamboo tips were well-cooked and had a great flavor. They also have more of the typical carry-out kinds of Chinese foods that are usually good too! This is a typical Chinese restaurant, so there is definitely the possibility of a loud phone ringing and some yelling. Young Chow Fried Rice and Orange Chicken all the way. The young chow is so far one of the best in Virginia, second only to Full Key in Wheaton, MD. I normally order the young chow and General tsos, but the General tso tastes off. I'm not sure what it is, but it is missing something - a sweetness perhaps? Had it on separate occasions, one time they forgot to add salt. It was really bad. Other times it just isn't taste right. If you want general tsos, just go for the orange chicken and throw away the orange peels when you get it. It has similar spice levels since they add red chilies to cook, and the flavor profile is much more on point. This is a mixed review, forced to write it because I want people to be warned after yesterday's occurrence... My hubby and I have visited this place quite a few times, they're usually on point with their food. Though they're known for their duck, we have gotten the typical Chicken with Broccoli, Beef with Mixed Veggies, and Sweet and Sour Chicken. Their food is served in big enough portions but it always looks like there was no effort put into it. For example, the food doesn't look freshly made and we have been there in the late afternoon and late evening and either time, same results. The "fried rice" looks like steamed white rice with soy sauce and nothing else in it - so disappointing. Yesterday after a long day without food, we decided to pay another visit since we were in the area and craving Chinese food. We started with two soups and before they brought them out, my husband went to use the restroom. He took a while to return and though the soups had been served by the time he got back, I didn't start without him. He returned to tell me that one of the cooks had been in the restroom for a long time and he had to knock to see if anyone was in there. The man rushed out without washing his hands (my husband only heard the toilet flush) and he made groaning sounds while touching his stomach as he walked into the kitchen. My husband returned to our table to tell me we were leaving because one of the cooks in the kitchen hadn't washed his hands!! We told our waitress that we were leaving and she charged us for the untouched soups. If it had been elsewhere, they would've let us go but I guess you can charge us for using the restroom, why not!? It'll be a while before we return, if ever. A big pet peeve is seeing someone who may be sick from the stomach and not wash his hands, and go to the kitchen like nothing. GROSSSSSSS. read more

Went here over the weekend again. I'm just not feeling it here anymore. We were surprised to see a little bit of Korean writing on the other hand written menus. Nice that they are catering to Koreans, but I don't quite see the connection. We ordered the same singaporean noodles, and again it was pretty salty. The beef and vegetables we ordered came with a surprisingly strange funk, and narrowed it down to what I believe was bamboo shoots....but wasn't certain. I wanted to like this place, which is why I gave it the average rating before, but I just don't see ourselves coming here again. We ordered 2 whole ducks, Yu Shien eggplant (steamed eggplant), salty seafood fried rice, and spicy fried seafood. PEKING DUCK: Unfortunately, they did not cut the duck up in front of us like I wanted. Nevertheless, the skin was crispy and juicy and the duck meat itself was tender. 2 whole ducks came with quite a bit of food! And the price ($32 instead of $38/each) is much better than Peking Gourmet's. The bun or wrap is not as fresh, but the sauce and scallions are pretty much the same. YU SHIEN EGGPLANT ($10): great vegetarian dish- I liked the flavor of the sauce and the amount of eggplant that came with the dish. The eggplant is steamed and not fried, however, so it could have a slimy texture to it! You can add pork for an extra $2. SALTED FISH CHICKEN FRIED RICE ($12): My least favorite dish- they added shrimp paste which made certain bites of rice way too salty. SPICY FRIED SEAFOOD ($15): despite the name, it wasn't spicy. This dish came with fried shrimp, scallops, etc. This was a good dish to share amongst the table. The place reminds me of your typical Chinese restaurant, except with better food. For a Monday night, it was not busy at all. However, service was friendly, although it was difficult to understand our waiter at times. I must have passed this place at least a dozen times when going to TJ Max or DSW and I've never really given it more than a passing glance except to stereotype that a place named China Wok couldn't possibly have anything authentic. That's when the stereotype ends and the unexpected begins. My sister mentioned that she'd heard all these good things about China Wok's peking duck. Frankly, I was a bit incredulous but we enlisted our folks to come along to try it. The restaurant is somewhat small, with about a dozen tables, most of which can only seat 4 people and even then, there's not a ton of elbow room. The peking duck comes out browned with the meat tender and the skin perfectly crispy. Our waitress told us the ducks are 6 pounds prior to cooking. Wrap the meat and a piece of crispy duck skin in a Chinese pancake along with some scallions and plum sauce and you enter food heaven. The ducks all seem pretty fresh, likely because of the high turnover. At least 7 other groups also ordered duck while we were there. The famous Peking Duck chef and restaurant co-owner wheels out the duck on a little cart and expertly carves it in front of you. The four of us had no difficulty scarfing down most of a whole duck but if you're just a group of two, a half duck might make more sense. The other dishes weren't quite as impressive. The portion sizes are a tad small and our tofu and eggplant dish, while piping hot and flavorful, was mostly eggplant. We actually came back the next day with more family and that duck disappointed, it was pink and not fully cooked. At least the chef didn't deny that, he clearly noticed it right away when carving the duck. He had a waitress go re-roast the duck but she came back so quickly that I think it's more likely it was microwaved. It still tasted great but we were slightly chagrined by all that. The salted fish and chicken dish we ordered was really flavorful except - hey, where was the salted fish? The dish certainly tasted of salted fish but we had trouble actually finding it in the dish. The garlic pork chops were also really good, though my mom's piece was slightly on the dry side. We also got the pork with tofu wrapper, which was good but be aware that the pork is pork belly, so it's pretty fatty. I'll take one point off because the seating is a bit cramped and because of the undercooked duck the second time around but overall, our experience here was good and it was great to have Peking Duck again after not having it in years. Decent Sichuan style food, especially when compared to the other options in the area. Service is friendly and value is ok. It's located in the same strip mall as tjmaxx. Came here on a snow saturday night to pick up carryout. Placing my order over the phone was very easy and the person on the other line was very friendly. The place was jam packed and my food was ready on time when I arrived. We ordered the half peking duck, fish hot pot and kung pao shrimp. The duck was OK. It came with the usual pancakes, sauce and scallions. The pancakes were good. They has separated the skin from the meat of the duck which I don't believe to be usual. The fish hot pot was a little salty for my taste but the flavors were absolutely on point, brining with Mala peppercorns. The fish was well cooked and as a whole this was a very solid dish. The kung pao shrimp was definitely better than your average take-out. I'd definitely order from here again. read more

I live on the west coast but every time I'm in town visiting my family I have to eat here. Best Peking duck ever!

Have been here numerous times over the past 5-10 years and their Peking Duck is the draw but they also have several authentic Chinese dishes on their "Chinese menu". Supposedly the Peking Duck guru from the Oriental Regency came here after that restaurant shut down. The duck is good and less expensive than Peking Gourmet Inn. Most of the authentic dishes are also good and their lunch menu is a good deal too. So why 3 stars?? I just can't get over the condition of the restrooms in the back. You make the trek and see the kitchen with veggies and food laid out and then you get to the bathroom and whoa, what a disaster! Makes you think what the inside of the kitchen looks like. So, there you have it...if you can get over the bathroom condition, you can have a nice authentic Chinese meal. They would greatly benefit from an overhaul/remodel effort... read more

This place looks like any other Chinese restaurant you can find all over the US, but they are not a turn of the mill one that only has sweet and sour chicken and Kung Pao Chicken. Their specialty is the Peking Duck and it's always very good, even after the original chef retired. It might be be a hair behind the best you can find in the DC metro area, but is way more affordable and is down to earth. On my monthly trip to my office, which is across the street, I eat here at least once, getting half a duck for dinner. I've also had their lunch specials many times. These are very standard Americanized Chinese dishes with steamed rice and an egg roll, but the portions are generous and the prices reasonable. read more

If I could give this place a 0 I would. The location is pretty convenient especially since there are other restaurants in the strip mall- go to them not this one. Service was decent at best. We got our drinks on time. The server (who I would assume was the manager/ head server) was rude, obnoxious, and rushed us. It was good he rushed us since we did not want to be in that place any longer. He was very arrogant when we ordered and started shouting at us. When we were done with the dumplings he shoved them at my father to force him to take home. Also, he grabbed our plates aggressively and instead of getting new plates, he wiped them off with his dirty hand. The fried dumplings tasted like burnt oil and the filling was tough. The cashew chicken, chicken fried rice, and shrimp tempura were ok at best. We came mainly for the Peking duck. The price is cheap, and it is reflected in the ducks quality. It was extremely dry and was horrible tasting. Even the pancakes were awful; they were like thick tortillas the size of your plate, but not in a good way. The Peking duck was so bad we decided to wrap up after tasting it and get fried chicken next door. Not to mention that the meal was quite expensive. Lastly, the bathrooms were horrible. You have to walk through the dark, crumbling back hallway and navigate yourself by the kitchen. Once you reach them, they are in horrible condition. On a recent trip to Dulles for a pm flight, I came early to avoid hours on the beltway. Living in Annapolis we have no good Chinese so I sought out China Wok for dinner. Yes, it's hole in the wall. I would be too scared to use the bathroom. At 4 PM most servers were sleeping at clean and ready tables. I ordered the Dan Dan noodles and Orange Beef. The Dan Dan was great, hearty cheap and the noodles homemade! It's a vegetarian version and lacking chili oil and pork it seems more Thai than Schezuan. The orange beef was huge, crunchy very nice. Wish I could have taken the left overs on my overseas flight. If I had one complaint, it was the beef only that it was a bit gamey. My guess is that it spends a lot of time marinating. read more

Was in Tysons on business. I am not usually in the area, so I don't always eat in Northern Virginia, but once in a while I do. I happened upon China Wok while I was looking for something fast and easy for dinner. I decided to try them for carry out. I am glad I did. I got spring rolls with white rice, and Kung Pao chicken. Everything came out literally 10 minutes after I ordered it. Piping hot and delicious. Not too greasy, not too salty. This is definitely several steps above Other similar Chinese takeout. It is worth noting that the Kong Pao chicken was mostly chicken. Not a lot of filler and vegetables. Definitely good bang for the buck. I would definitely recommend them to anyone in the Tysons area. Can't believe I haven't written a review for China Wok yet, but here it is: if you want one of best and least pretentious Peking Duck experiences in the area, you have to come here. Yes, China Wok does their (relatively) smaller but very authentic menu well, with choices like bamboo and shredded pork, Chinese watercress, and various casseroles you'd find on many reputable menus. But the biggest hidden attraction is the Peking Duck that they do in-house. Be sure to call ahead to make sure they have availability that day (usually do). When sitting down to order, be sure to mention that first and specify how many ducks (1 per 2-3 people is generally a good portion), and they'll come out in 20-30 minutes. The duck will either come pre-sliced from the kitchen, or if the Chef is in, he may do tableside service in front of you. The order consists of the duck, sliced scallions, sauce, and the wrappers (bing). The flavor and experience has pretty much always been consistent for me on my many visits. Overall, China Wok is a small, unassuming, very consistent experience for authentic Chinese food. Be sure to go for the Peking Duck, you won't be disappointed. read more

The duck was very good when I went there with some friends and we ordered a whole duck. but the next time I went there with one friend and ordered half a duck. It was not so good and very little, a lot less than 1/2 of a whole. What really shocked me was I noticed the waiter poured the unfinished water left in the glasses right back into the water pitcher. Like Peruvian cuy with such little edible meat on the bone. I love that this lovely gentleman does a sweet slicing tableside but after that it goes downhill. Major yuck. China Wok was great! I went with my cousin and we shared the Peking duck as well as the Szechuan pepper shrimp and the eight jewel tofu. The Peking duck was the star, but the shrimp and tofu dishes were also good. The duck was amazing and the hoisin sauce and pancakes were great as well. The pepper shrimp is not the best I've had but it's really solid. We both liked the eight jewel tofu and liked how it wasn't drowning in sauce; you could really taste the ingredients. Of course, the duck was great - and I'd say just as good as leftovers the next day. The service was decent. We came here for the Peking duck based on our friend's recommendation. The duck was good, however, their sauce was very different from other restaurants we have eaten in the past. It was made with hoisin sauce but they must have added more honey and other stuff (maybe coconut soda) so it was very sweet! The Lo Mein doesn't give you enough shrimp, but is a HUGE portion The Beef and Broccoli was mediocre, as was the Hunan chicken. Somewhat more expensive then the chinese restaraunt I normally go to, Fu Shing Cafe. Being chinese myself, this is NOT the restaraunt to go to if you want 100% authentic chinese food. So my favorite Chinese in the area is Hong Kong Palace, which I frequent way too much but one day, my family and I strolled in here after visiting Performance Bikes in Tyson's Corner. I remember having a pretty good experience before here. We ordered pan fried dumplings (my daughter's favorite) ma po tofu and spicy fish hot pot. I was expecting something like what you get at Uncle Liu's but it was actually similar to the Fish in Peppery Broth at HKP. It had fish with pickled cabbage so it was a bit salty but it had TONS of fish in the dish. I'd say that it was good, not great compared to HKP. My wife is not a Chinese food connoisseur but the pork fried rice was to her liking. I agree that they make a very good fried rice. Generous portion and the family devoured it. It's not altogether authentic schezuan but pretty close. It's a very solid place with good food, great portions and very fast and friendly service. This place is my GOTO spot for Chinese food. It's clean and really delicious. There are dishes I like better than others but I've actually never had a bad meal here. Their peking duck is RIDICULOUSLY good, they know what they're doing. Their noodle dishes are amazing and their fried dishes really hit the spot. All of the classic Chinese dishes you think of are pretty solid here. It's great to have a reliable spot when you get the craving =) read more
