Every time I came here with my mother, she would always tell me the same story. She would tell me how this place was the first Chinese restaurant she ever visited with her father when first arriving in the United States and how much she loved coming here because it reminded her of him. I've been eating here since the early 90s as a kid and still come back often from Long Beach. Their recipes don't seem to change and the options are few. In other words, perfect. A total gem. For me, the best Chinese food I've ever eaten. Used to live on the East Side of LB and would still come out here for their food. Now live on the Northside and still remain faithful. Everything is delicious but I always get the orange chicken and BBQ pork. The chow mein has chicken inside and the rice is cooked perfectly, not too dry or tasteless. I have been coming here to Chinese Deli since my parents use to bring us back in the 80's. The quality has gone down and I hate when they would be cheap and used to water down their sweet and sour sauce to save money. Orange chicken sometimes doesn't look like chicken. Chow mein is nasty and the best thing they have going for them is the BBQ Pork. But you have to get there at the right time otherwise it's been sitting for hours all dried and oily. Sometimes the lady's that prepare your plate are rude and give attitude and be talking crap in their language. And it's only when she is there she would charge me for the hot oil 25 cents. This is probably my favorite chinese fast food in the area. They always have a variety of dishes to choose from. Their BBQ pork is amazing and goes well with their fried rice. The orange chicken is well balanced, not too tangy and sweet. The spicy chicken has enough heat to satisfy. Beef brocolli is good. They actually give you more beef than brocolli than other places. What I love about this place is they fill your to-go plate to a point where it can overflow. (*Note: You get to-go plate wheather its dine in or to-go) This place is small and it can be busy for lunch time. The interior seats could use some TLC. But, food and service is still great. Okay, let's start with the name. Chinese Deli. When I saw the word "deli" on the sign, I expected the place to serve freshly sliced chinese sandwiches of some type. That was not the case. It's a chinese fast food joint. My guess (due to the interior) is that the place used to be a former deli, then the new owner put the word "chinese" in front of it. The name kind of throws people off (IMHO). Oh well, on to the food. I ordered a two item combo, orange chicken and bbq pork, with half fried rice and half chow mein. The orange chicken and fried rice were standard, the chow mein? Let's just say, "No more chowing chow mein for me, mayne." It was drier than a drought in the Sahara desert in the summer time. But that bbq pork though...OMG! When I came to visit, a fresh tray had just came out. As the lady furiously chopped up my order with the knife like a hibachi chef, I imagined a chunk of pork flying into the air and me catching it in my mouth with ease, like the grape-catching champion in the Guinness Book of World Records. The taste of the pork is very succulent. The "burnt ends" will send your taste buds to the moon and NOT back. You have to catch it when it's fresh though because I came back a second time when it wasn't fresh, and it didn't have the same effect. All in all, it's an alright place. Next time I'll try the wonton soup. Stick to the local favorites made fresh and you're golden! [note] the meal made my stomach feel "some type of way", but it was so worth it :] Peace read more
