I ordered the Sweet & Sour chicken dinner special with Noodles and egg roll sauce on the side along with six crab Rangoons. The Sweet and Sour chicken dinner lacked flavor and taste I was not able to eat due to taste of the chicken and the noodles even with the help of the sauce - very disappointing! Crab Rangoons were solid and that is the only reason why I am giving this place a 2 star rating. read more

I was walking to Tacochela and saw an empty restaurant with no one at the register; it had a sign that said Z J china. I walked inside tacochela and stood in the long line to get food. As I was deciding what to try, I could not help but think why is Z J China empty on a Friday during lunch rush. I decided to exit tacochela and give them a chance. When I walked in I got greeted by a lady and I asked her what she would recommend. She said orange chicken and I ordered it. As I was waiting for my food. I analyzed their menu, website and yelp. I realized patterns which has led to their failure. Ogden avenue is a very busy street and to have an empty restaurant at rush time means something is wrong. Once my food arrived the rice tasted old. The orange chicken was very underwhelming. I decided to hand my tray to the lady and ask if I could have a word with them. All I wanted to do was give them few advice which would allow them to be more profitable free of charge. I saw her and a gentleman sitting in the kitchen and enjoying lunch together. I have never seen a restaurant operate like this. The only two employee that work are taking lunch breaks at the same time. I suppose I should greet the guests and cook for them. We were very disappointed. My Mongolian Beef was tough to chew. My husband ordered Sesame Chicken which tasted like Sweet and Sour Chicken with Sesame seeds sprinkled on it. Remember the "No Soup For You" guy from Seinfeld? This is the Asian restaurant version of that. Decent food...but expect ZERO concessions, or exceptions, from the owner. If this is your first time, be prepared to order exactly what you think you will enjoy, or you may never come back. Walking into the establishment you will be greeted by an employee guarded by a saran-wrap forcefield covering the register counter. I'm all for PPE, but my goodness. I was thinking, "Am I ordering take-out, or walking into a seedy medical establishment?" Fortunately, the food was good. I had the General's Tofu & Pineapple fried rice. The food seemed fresh, & the portion sizes were good. But it's a little pricey for take-out, at nearly $15 a dish. (And pass on the pan-fried noodles). I have been ordering from here for the past 10 years. They are apparently under new management. I order the same thing every time. The general tsao chicken. It used to come with onions and peppers and all sorts of vegetables. I am currently looking at it and there is two pieces of broccoli and swimming and sauce which isn't even the same color it used to be. I called the location and I asked what the hell happened and they told me new management. When I was trying to explain my side, the girl wasn't hearing me. She kept saying new management. With the recent change of owner in July of 2018, I tried the new ZJ's today. It is not the same presentation, quality was a notch down (egg foo young was a mash of fried rice and 2 distorted patties), and the menu choices were reduced too. On the positive side, the young man order taker was very nice and the egg roll had a crisp, light brown color to it and it tasted great. The small waiting area has been spruced up too. It seems the prices stayed about the same. It was odd I was the only customer in there for lunch. I wish this new ownership team well so maybe they are still adjusting. I was in Downers Grove working and had a taste for chicken fried rice for lunch. Found Z J China on the web. Ordered over the phone. Was ready in 10 minutes for pick up. This was the best chicken fried rice I have ever had from any restaurant. Firstly, the portion size was huge and I ordered the small! It didn't come in the small paper box you normally get, this was a big plastic tray stuffed with deliciousness. There was a copious amount of perfectly cooked large pieces of chicken. No searching for chicken here. Nice egg also mixed in. Delicious greens too. I'm so happy I found this place. If you like chicken fried rice you need to go there. Awesome!! read more

It's not a fancy sit down restaurant but the place is very clean and you can tell that its run by a family. I really like the Singapore rice noodles from this restaurant and they are one of the only places that I order it from. The egg rolls are much bigger than what you can get from other Chinese restaurants and they are delicious. I also thought that the crab rangoon was fantastically made. My friend and I made a pit stop there today to pick up some food even though it was Christmas Eve. They were very friendly and offered to help me even if I did take a while. Overall, I thought they had great customer service and wanted to make my dining experience a great one. read more

It's a bright and clean little takeout place with a single booth for dining. I've had the sweet and sour shrimp lunch special, which had a nice batter. The fried rice which was included could have used more flavor. Then again, do I really need more sodium in my diet? I've also had the Singapore noodles which was loaded with chunks of chicken breast and succulent shrimp. Many places will give you those microscopic shrimp in your stir fry, which is why ZJ China's large shrimp (yes, I'm aware of the oxymoron) caught me by surprise. FYI, the Singapore noodles are best ordered extra spicy. It's still not that spicy, but I enjoy my food hot. I decided to make a random carryout drop-in on a place that I drive past every day. It is a great example of the stip-mall ethnic carryout genre and I will try it again in the future. My entree was Empress Chicken, which I use as a first-time benchmark in new Chinese places. The cause was a bit more brown and think that I am used, to, and the veggies were nice and fresh and crisp, with good spiciness. I ordered a small portion and it was way too much for me for dinner, I had leftovers. The pot stickers (which I did not have room for) were crispy on the bottom, which I like, and a bit mushy on top, which I don't care for so much. The (free) egg roll was good. General tso's-- flavor was good but chicken was really chewy, had to discard a few pieces because my jaw was tired. Fried rice -- good, what you'd expect Egg Roll -- again it was pretty standard... nothing wrong with it Hot and sour soup -- was really lacking in flavor. Going with our first impressions, its the first thing we said. In summary, we had an average experience with our visit. I just ordered out from here for the first time, I was hesitant to try someplace new but I really wanted some Chinese food so I gave it try. Egg rolls are really good, so that was already a win in my book. I got the kung pao fried rice as well and that was good and had a nice kick, although I would get beef or see if I can get it without meat, I didn't care for the chicken but it's a texture thing for me so I'm sure it's fine otherwise.
