Drinks: - Had the Mirror Pond Pale Ale from Deschutes here. It was refreshing and wasn't very hoppy. I think it's rated at 40 IBU so it's very easy to drink Food: - The Braised Pork and Tofu was a little bland but the texture of the pork and tofu were on point. I took this home, seasoned it a little more and ate it with rice. It carries well and is good as leftovers - The dumplings are a must get. I got the combo dumpling plate that came with 15 dumplings (I think they're all pork dumplings with slight variations in vegetables). The sauce is addicting. The dumpling wrapper is quite thick, which I'm not used to but it works well for these dumplings - The Beef Noodle Soup is very good. The broth isn't too rich to the point where you get tired of it easily. The noodles are amazing, kind of reminds me of udon and I think they're handmade. This is also a must get. The meat with this dish is fibrous and a little chewy but I really like that about it. The bok choy with this dish is also the freshest bok choy I've had. Maybe I'm just imagining it but for some reason the bok choy just made a huge impression on me Ambience: - The neon sign in front is iconic - The establishment is clean and tidy - The décor is simple, nothing fancy. This place doesn't seem to subscribe to décor gimmicks, the food speaks for itself Overall: I saw this restaurant on Guy Fieri's Diner's Drive Ins & Dives, and I think it lived up to the hype especially the dumplings. I definitely will be returning to this place for more. The price is a little expensive but the quality of the food makes it worth it. The service here is very good, the servers were attentive and patient. I saw them repeatedly check up on customers to make sure they got their orders. Amazing LaPi and shrimp dumplings made this Chinese American children of immigrants very happy.

Very angry at myself on how come I never tried this place until recently. Truly authentic northern Chinese food in the area and this establishment has been opened for a very long time - one of the OG's. Their Chinese sauerkraut dumplings are to die for. I cannot find this anywhere else in town. Their La Pi is also very refreshing and the right amount of vinegar to start your meal - also the only place in town that has La pi. read more

Delicious!! Third time here, consistently Delicious. Brought my sister as I'd been telling her about this spot as we both love Chinese food. Had the seafood dumplings, melt in your mouth not over done perfect and hot coming out. Next the shrimp slash chill oil. Hand pulled noodles with just.the right chew. Not to spicy, so dont.be afraid mild people! Shredded pork, thinly slices pork loin I think. Again not over cooked so not tough. This dish was melt.in your mouth and a good medium spice. It's so hard to find authentic Northeastern Chinese food (东北菜) and I think I finally did! We ordered Five Spiced Shredded Tofu skin, Braised Pork Belly, Broccoli Beef, Stir Fried eggplant (地三鲜my absolute favorite), and Pork Dumplings. All the dishes were just excellent! Not good. I recommend Zien Hong instead. No mention of pork in your pickled noodles so that was a fun surprise when I don't eat pork.

My dumpling week 2020 crawl ended at Chin's Kitchen, which had the best to offer of the places we tried today (Afuri, Boke Bowl, Danwei Canting, Sherpa Kitchen, Chin's Kitchen). I'm happy we tried it, because if not for the Dumpling Week list, I don't think we ever would have realized that it's been hiding here all along in the Hollywood neighborhood. The outside looks like an old hole in the wall place but with some new signs - I read they've been around a long time and recently underwent some new ownership in the last couple years. The inside was nicer, with a few cozy booths and some tables against the walls My mom and I were greeted by a friendly gentleman who brought us water and menus, along with some plates of pickles and peanuts - a nice touch. While they weren't doing any particular specials for dumpling week, they have a whole page dedicated to jiao zi so we were not disappointed. We got the trio platter - for $16 or $17 you get to choose three different types, five pieces each. Definitely do this if you haven't been her before! We got the pork and chive, pork/shrimp/leek, and the shrimp/egg/leek dumplings. We also got an order of garlic green beans. Food came out piping hot and with the green beans smelling heavenly of garlic. We devoured our food, savoring every delicious bite of perfectly cooked dumpling skin and juicy pork/shrimp. Our favorite was the shrimp and egg jiao zi but the pork was pretty good too. I'd come back for sure to try more of the menu - they had some noodle soups that I was interested in. The service was friendly and attentive too, while the food was reasonably priced. What's not to like about this place? We will be back! read more

Loved all the dishes here. I'd recommend the Shredded Tofu Salad with Five Spices. It was flavorful but light at the same time. The B6 Stewed Beef Casserole was also a great choice! The beef was cooked until super tender, melt-in-the-mouth with at juicy fat and soft cartiledges. The owner was very nice and kind. She served the tables herself and made conversations with most of her customers. It was a very warm service, indeed. Go here for a filling, cheap, and delicious Northern Chinese Meal. I've only gotten frozen dumplings from Chin's so far, but 5 stars for those delicious things! I like to keep a few frozen dumplings on hand for quick meals, and Chin's pork & leek dumplings are some of the best! Not too doughy, filling is flavorful and there's plenty of it. Boil them up in about 8 minutes at home and bam! Lunch is ready. $23 for 2 dozen dumplings. So good. read more

I am actually disappointed. I read online saying this place has authentic Chinese food. We drove all the way from Beaverton area just to pick up from the since I'm really craving some good Chinese food. But the food was not that authentic. We ordered a Kong pao chicken, spicy noodle, Chinese sauerkraut and pork stewed in casserole, Chinese leek and pork dumpling, and purple rice. The king pao chicken is typical America Chinese food, the noodle is not spicy at all and it is basically just salty udon ( definitely do not worth the price and don't order it. I'm so disappointed in this noodle dish!!) The pork dumpling is just ok, since the dumpling wrap is so thick. I like the flavor of the sauerkraut dish, it taste just like home, however it has so much clear noodle in the soup. I am not sure whether I want to eat at this place again. Just be careful what you order since not everything in the store is that authentic. =( read more

First time at Chin's, having heard good things about the place. I was most excited to try their dumplings. We got a set of 12, and we had ordered the pork and leek option. However, we seemed to have gotten a mix of different kinds, which was totally fine. I liked the shrimp and egg dumpling that I wasn't expecting. With the dumplings, you can't wait to eat them or they will get hard, so they're best eaten right away. The La Pi Salad was the second thing that caught my eye. The wide noodles atop of a bed of perfectly situated sliced veggies was the appeal. It had an interesting flavor. It was good at first, but towards the end, it started to be too much. Would I recommend trying it , yes. Would I get it again , maybe not. Lastly, we ordered some orange chicken because we wanted something fried and a little greasy. The orange chicken definitely has a deeper orange flavor than for instance, the orange chicken at Panda Express. There were orange peels slathered within the sauce. Overall, solid place for dinner. Big party was there when we arrived, which is a good sign. Most of tables were filled. Next time I would try the handmade pulled noodles for sure. read more

Quite possibly the best dumplings you can find in Portland! But explore the rest of the menu at your own risk. Dead serious, if you are really hungry just order more dumplings -- they have plenty of variety there already (leek, sauerkraut, cabbage, etc.). The space is nice and usually plenty of room for small groups. If they are unusually busy for whatever reason (Chinese new year perhaps), you may have to be patient as they seem to be a relatively small kitchen. read more

We generally just have a bunch of their dumplings in the freezer for quick lunches but finally decided to actually eat here. Nice, casual, friendly. Parking sucks nuts it's Portland - shrug. Of course we all know about the killer dumplings so we decided to try other things- like noodles and a general Tao chicken. Got the noodles, never saw the chicken. You cannot go wrong with the dumplings, but if you want my personal favorites I'll have to suggest the textured tofu as an appetizer and the pork & sauerkraut casserole w noodles as a main course. First of all, this is the first time I've had Northern Chinese food since I left China! The new owners have worked to keep the 1949 vibe of the place, while not compromising on the traditional taste. Get the Dumplings they said.. I love dumplings, but I don't order them as much as I would like, due to they're just not very good at most places, so I tend to just stay clear from ordering them. Not today though, I ordered the dumplings from this local restaurant and I was pleasantly surprised. Totally different than soup dumplings that I also love, these were flavorful, tender and fresh. Leek and Pork dumplings - A+ Must Order Shrimp and egg dumplings - B Green Beans - B (bottled garlic not fresh chopped) Spring Rolls - C The fillings were a bit soggy I would return here for sure, love to try other dishes. I added the note to add tofu, AND THAT I WAS COOL WITH YOUR $4 UPCHARGE, and yet you insisted that I give you a credit card to pay for the charge that you forgot to add. Im doing a quick outing for a takeout pickup, should I come bearing extra money for your unexpected mess up? Did you really need to yell at the cooks for adding tofu, when it's their job to follow the instructions, and YOUR job to add or subtract things according to the bill? You "threatened" me with never adding tofu again to my order if I don't pay the $4 on my next order. I was dumbfounded and feeling guilty, so I reassured your dumb face that I'd happily pay extra next time, since I freaking order from you weekly and have always happily come back. That was before I tragically was met by your nasty attitude, and after I dropped my future bus fare into your tip jar. You, madam, are a rude person, and are better suited in a role where your personality cannot shine. Do us customers (and talented cooks) a favor. The three dishes we ordered were great. The dumpling skin is very chewy and the filling is yummy. The glass noodle dish is flavorful. The glass noodle cooked perfectly, not too soft not too hard. Probably would give it 4 stars but I've been rounding up during COVID :) Chinese Sauerkraut and Pork (Belly) Casserole - comes with lots of sweet potato noodles. The "sauerkraut" is Chinese pickled cabbage. One of my favorite Northern Chinese dishes and they do it really well!!! Great balanced flavors, very clean tasting. Pork and Cabbage dumplings - fresh and homey tasting. Thinking about picking up some frozen ones next time so I can always have them on hand. Sautéed A-Choy - loved this as well. Cooked well, not too oily, super garlicky and flavorful. Pickled Hot Chili Noodle - really loved the fresh handmade thick noodles that were cooked al dente / QQ. Probably wouldn't order this again though cause I personally didn't like the flavor. It was more like a Zha Zhang Mian with Sambal. Not what I was expecting. I would definitely try the other fresh noodle dishes though. Appreciate a Chinese restaurant specializing in one regions cuisine - Northeastern / Dong Bei. Still good and operating well during COVID-19! Very good food for take-out; hearty portions, all the dishes stay hot, and just generally simple and satisfying food. I read about the Dōngběi style Chinese food that they serve, and Chin's seems to service many of the classics; 地三鲜 Di sān xiān: "Three delights from the earth", which are Potato, Eggplant, and Sweet Peppers. This is probably their best vegetarian dish and a classic at that. Very savory gravy sauce that brings all the flavors together. Generous portions - order one of these and some rice, and you can have this meal for days. 拔丝地瓜 Básī dìguā: Candied potatoes. I think this is for dessert, it is sweet and thick in a caramelized sugar, nice with tea after the main meal. Jiao Zi: THe dumplings are excellent. I think the dough is handmade there because it tastes very fresh. Nice and chewy outer, not too soft or mushy. Not the same as soup dumplings, but the steam and stuff adds a little nice juiciness. If you want more Dōngběi classics, I think you want to try the options that are braised or stewed, or with cabbage or "Sauerkraut". read more

Meh. Good pork/leek dumplings, but the Yu Xiang Rou Si was NOT right at all, very much more like sweet & sour pork, and the garlic beans were OK, but nothing to rave about, a bit soft and overdone. I LOVE me some good Yu Xiang! I've gotten it at so many places and had what I think is the best and the worst of it, but there are some characteristics that are almost always there historically and in the best tasting versions: - Plenty of La DoBanJiang (spicy bean sauce) and sichuan peppers. LOTS of sichuan peppers! Or, in a pinch Tianjin (typical chinese red chili pepper sold in huge bags at the local market... sometimes known as Chile de árbol). It is intended to be a spicy dish, but with notes of sweetness, vinegar, salt and unrefined sugar or molasses, a sauce that originated as part of a fish dish and was later converted in a pinch to work with pork. Chin's Yu Xiang was electric red, super sweet and vinegary, the sauce tasting exactly like the typical sweet and sour pork you get out of a steam tray in the mall. It had a few shreds of jalapeño, but no Chinese peppers of any sort I could find and certainly none of the rich flavor or heat those add. Wood ears were also missing, a very important textural element that makes the bite much more interesting than just pork and bamboo shoots alone. The pork was good quality, far better than that mall, but still. I keep a bottle of my own homemade Chile Árbol pepper extract, so I mixed that in and some salt. Much better, but still not anywhere near competition class ;) If you ever get to Houston, TX (yes, I know, right...? But, Houston has an immense Chinese community and food scene and some of the best Chinese food in the country) then try the Yu Shiang at the humble and inexpensive Chinese Café on either Richmond by the Galleria or on Bellaire, right in the middle of Houston's massive AsianTown. Wow! Sooooooo good! The garlic beans were ... boring and limp, sad. Try the shocking and amazing green beans with chili flakes at Bottle Rocket sometime. THAT will do you right! Ordered Chef's noodle special with shrimp, chicken and beef for $18.95...extremely disappointed in this dish. There were 3 shrimp, two small pieces of chicken and 3 pieces of tough beef with a little bit of cabbage. We called the restaurant the next day to let them know and they laughed at us! Wow! If you're in to being treated this way...go and knock yourself out! Very rude people! We've ordered from this establishment many times before but never again. the foods not even that good including the dumplings that they are soooo well known for.
