One of the few original Googie-type diners left... Their food is pretty good. I've had a steak sandwich, a few club sandwiches, hamburgers, and different breakfasts throughout the years. The milkshakes are pretty awesome. Their prices are average. Not too expensive, not too cheap. It's Denny's prices, but this food tastes a little better... plus you get the cool architecture!! I'm always on the look-out for a cool coffee shop, and this place is pretty cool. The food is just OK though. I had my old stand by Club Sandwich, with fries. The sandwich was not very interesting with lunchmeat turkey and American cheese. The service was pretty mediocre as well. I sat at the counter since I was alone, and waited a long time for anybody to check in with me. No eye contact from the server was vaguely disconcerting and she was more interested in her coworkers than making sure my iced tea was topped up. Nothing But Smiles. This is a nice place to sit relax and people watch. The people who eat here are mostly locals. So they have that interesting look. The blue collar, the elderly, the young, the hipster, the casual, the construction guy. Things you see in a movie. OH WAIT. this place does remind me of a movie. LoL. Private little parking area. A plus. Hawthorne is a busy street. The food. I go OG and just grab the steak medium and eggs over hard with hash. No pancake. It's already to much food. I never am able to finish. So waste non I say. A little black brew and a glass of water. Good touch. This place has that vibe. That old 50s style diner vibe. If it wasn't for the no smoking laws I guarantee you people who eat here regularly would be smoking and enjoying their breakfast. It's not OMG out of this word food. This place really is just "o.k." A decent option on a stretch of a busy street with few comparable alternatives. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here, but would add a half of a star, should that feature ever become possible, for the exceptional service and water. *Excuse my erroneous reference to Pulp Fiction. I don't like writing this review but I think people should be informed of what I experienced. I have been a loyal patron at Chips for a little over a year going, in weekly, sometimes on multiple days. I have a very severe dietary allergy and like to find a place that I can frequent and the staff will become familiar with me. I'm polite and I overtip. I appreciate it when the staff of any restaurant recognizes/remembers me and seems to care. I would describe the staff at Chips in that way up to this point. Their food is delicious and their servers are very nice. Today, though, I've made my last visit. I ordered a side of pancakes with my my meal and always order everything without butter. I specifically referenced this when ordering my pancakes. When my food arrived, there was a large round dollop of butter on the pancakes. That is an easily rectifiable issue. New pancakes without butter on top and I'm fine. Not a big deal. I pointed it out to my server and she realized the mistake immediately. She said "Oh my god. Yes. Right. Your allergy. I'll have them make you new pancakes right away." For me, that validates my logic in frequenting an establishment: she noted that it wasn't that I simply don't like the taste, I'm allergic to a direct dairy product like that. When she returned with a "new" plate of pancakes, something struck me as odd. The top one had an indention on the edge and a tear, the way you would expect it to look if it was pinched and lifted by hand. It's not practice for chefs/cooks to turn pancakes by hand, they use spatulas on the griddle. We all know this. So I lifted it and noted that the one underneath had an indention in the middle and was oily. Exactly as you would expect if it had a large dollop of butter there. Instead of making new pancakes, the cook simply took the butter off and rearranged the order. I felt the rest of it to be sure: nowhere else could I feel that butter. It was what they previously tried to serve me and they attempted to make me think it was new. Either this cook doesn't care about what the servers tell him or he was intentionally attempting to give me the finger. Again, the waitstaff is friendly and the ownership seems very nice but cooks/chefs with such an open disregard for the dietary allergies of patrons should not be allowed to handle food. I would not return even if paid. I can't shake the nagging suspicion that the cook purposely attempted to make me sick. 2 new pancakes doesn't make a dent in the restaurants bottom line and I'm happy to wait. For all they know, my allergic reaction could have made me violently ill right there in the middle of the dining area and he would have to explain that. Again, he's seen me a couple of times a week for the past 52 weeks: he knows me and knows my allergies. Servers who I see once a month know my allergy. He either doesn't care or was intentionally spiteful. For that, I will not go back. Which is very unfortunate because I really liked their food. I don't like leaving this review but people need to read it. Cooks shouldn't do that to people. read more

Just moved to the neighborhood and after a day of running errands I was starving. Stopped by this place for a to go order. The woman who took my order was polite and the service was speedy even though I came a half hour before they closed. I ordered the carne asada with home fries and eggs over medium. The eggs were cooked to perfection which rarely occurs when you order them over medium. The steak and potatoes were extremely flavorful. Awesome dinner food. I will be back. read more

Delicious food, the only complaint I had was about the onion rings, ordered as a side and they were more soggy than I like. Cool 50s-style diner with plenty of counter space (that's what makes a diner a diner after all) and a patio. We had some time before a flight and bellies to fill, and this did the trick. It's only about a 15 minute drive from LAX (depending on traffic of course) and there is a free parking lot behind the building. The service is friendly. The menu has a decent variety, but it's not huge. I went with a bacon burger. At first they brought it out with cheese (rather American "cheese" yuck) which I didn't order, but they took it back and got me a fresh one quickly. The burgers here are thin, "fast food style"... maybe 50's style but I wasn't born then so I don't know; they don't ask how you want them cooked. The burger was certainly good for a burger of that style, though I tend to prefer thicker, juicier burgers. The fries were fine. My dining companion got chorizo & eggs, which he enjoyed. read more

This morning I walked out of 2 different places because of their bad service and lack of options w/o to much carbs on the menu. I walked into chips and had the best breakfast ever, fruit with dark coffee and 3 stripes of bacon at a very reasonable price. But this place has something very special and it's the people that work in here, everyone is smiling, service is just beyond expectations. Servers are super nice and seems like they genuinely care for you. I was shocked to find this type if service. Employes where so positive that made my entire day shift. Food is good and affordable, service is out of this world and the place is very clean. I usually don't tip over 15%, here I had to do 30%. read more

Finally got around to trying Chips last night. We live nearby but somehow never made it. 5 stars for service and food, but had to take away a star because the ladies room had a crazy leak that literally stopped water on me while I was washing my hands. The rest of the restaurant was clean, no ripped vinyl seats which you see so often on older diners, and the service was impeccable. I had the turkey melt with fries and a cup of the beef barley soup. You could tell the soup was homemade, chock filling veggies and beyond delicious. The turkey melt had real sliced turkey breast, the same turkey my husband got with his t-bird turkey dinner. He said the stuffing was also homemade. The fries could definitely use a boost, they were a little bland. That's literally the worst thing I can say about the food. Will definitely be back and of they fix the roof leak in the ladies room I will change my rating to 5 stars. read more

When I first started going to Chips about a year ago, the food disappointed. I'm not much for homestyle food in the first place honestly, since I enjoy cooking and don't like paying for something I can make better at home. I found the entrees to be rather bland at times. Then I went for breakfast. Chips shines at breakfast! Everything is perfectly seasoned and delicious. So I just had to try this place because of the Googie architecture and the 1950's style diner/coffee shops. It is not a bad place. Like people mentioned on here, there is a outdoor patio. There isn't a big big menu but enough for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I ordered a turkey burger originally but the cook informed the server that they were all out so my server suggested a veggie burger but I ordered just a regular hamburger instead. Not bad of a hamburger for the price. But I can always get a better burger but oh well it was for the experience. The server was attentive, so that is cool. This place has some nifty things inside such as an old cash register in there and a booth with one bench seat. One other qualm about this place was since we are experiencing a heat wave in the middle of winter it was quite stuffy in there. In conclusion this place is a good spot to go for some grub, of coarse it will never compete with other modern restaurants but it is what it is. read more

Chips Restaurant is one of the few remaining TRUE 50's-style diner/restaurants, right down to the Googie architecture. I appreciate that they've tried to keep it authentic by changing as little as possible of the beautiful building, while at the same time keeping it well maintained. But the real reason you come here is the FOOD, right? Well, you won't be disappointed! For breakfast foodies like myself, it's hard to beat Chips for REAL breakfast food anytime of the day. I love the Elvis Omelette (I get mine scrambled), and the Bogie-themed dish: the Eggs Benedict. Also good is the "Three Stooges" Combo, which is a great value. Friends I eat with say their dinners are good, too. I can definitely say the breakfast food is EXCELLENT, also including pancakes, waffles, and grits; the coffee is solid, and the shakes and malts are to die for! The servers here are old school (but not old!) in a good way and really top-notch, and I am pleasantly surprised that, with all this, their prices are a great value! Please don't go to this place. Pay close attention to the 1 star reviews. I ordered two French toast combos and two sides of the house potatoes over the phone. The woman that answered took awhile to get my order right. She told me it would take 15-20mins to be ready for pickup. It was literally 4mins. down the street. I left 10mins. after making the call. I Walked in and the waitress asked my name and to my surprise she told me that my food just finished and is ready. I thought that's cool.....No! Not only was it over priced, but my food was totally cold. Again it was a 4min ride back to my job and I'm telling you it tasted like out food was sitting out for like 10mins. Also came across an eggshell in my eggs, the French toast was soo brown and dry from all the cinnamon. Nothing about it was a golden brown like in the pictures they post. Just go to Norms . This was my first time at chips, although I've passed by the diner for years. I took my breakfast to go and was pleased with the time it took, as I had to get back to work, and the food tasted great. I ordered the three stooges combo with French toast, bacon, and eggs. I would rate my breakfast a 9 out of 10, because the bacon was very salty. There were three staff on the floor working, one of which was the manger who was assisting in waiting tables. Everyone was friendly and inviting. I have four stars because the prices are a little high but my overall experience was great. I will be going back again soon! read more

My kid and I have been wanting to check this place out after moving to Hawthorne a few months back and after finding out that they filmed Pulp Fiction here we decided we were going to give it a shot. We stopped by yesterday afternoon. It was not too busy which I loved. The decor is a sweet 50's diner motif, adorable. I ordered the 3 Stooges (3 pancakes, 3 eggs - any style and your choice of 3 pieces of either bacon sausage). I ordered it with eggs over easy and bacon. BACON!!! This truly hit the spot. It was a delicious, satisfying meal. My daughter and her friend ordered the Turkey burger and the Baja burger. They loved it! And of course, the element that can make or break any meal, the wait staff. The waitress was very personable and professional. A lovely woman, whose name I failed to get. I was leaving Santa Monica and decided to visit an old school diner as Denny's is always packed. We were seated immediately and the waiter kept the coffee filled. I appreciate diners and breakfast joints that get this part of the service right of keeping the coffee filled. I think they use Farmer Brother's coffee as most restaurants in CA use. My wife has the chilaquiles which was spicy, but my French toast breakfast with eggs and bacon was good. I would visit if back in town. The parking situation can get tight since it is next to a church and very narrow. Overall a good experience and I like the architecture of the building with the plentiful natural light beaming through the windows. read more

Went there for the first time for lunch last Friday. Great googie design, reminiscent of the '60s HoJos. You can eat at the counter, at booths, or outside. Had the chicken fajita special, tons of food and it was excellent. The staff was very friendly and extremely attentive. I will definitely be going back.
