Well... there's a reason why we eat here 1-2xs a month, bi-passing any fancier Korean restaurants because of the reasonable prices, consistency of their food and the food come outs lickety split. This place ain't fancy and to be honest mid level divey but the food is just like a Korean mama cooked it. Prices have risen just a little bit but they have an early bird special menu ( 11:00 am to 9:00pm) that used to be $7.50 forever to now $9.50. I went last night with my friend to Cho Dang. I was afraid that it would be too expensive, because Korean food tends to be expensive, especially in downtown Honolulu. I was pleasantly surprised that Cho Dang has an all-day specials menu, and most of the simpler entrees are $9.50. For $9.50, there's quite a bit of meat jun and banchan (vegetable side dishes). The meat jun was tasty too, and there was a lot of sauce. Honestly, the portion size was perfect for me -- it wasn't too much, and it didn't leave me wanting more. And, after GE tax and tip, it came out to just over $12. Pretty good for dinner in downtown Honolulu. Cho Dang will likely be closing soon (they have a second location in Kakaako). I definitely recommend you try the all-day special for this great price while you still can. read more

Upon feeling a little under the weather, I sought out some nice hot food to clear my sinuses. Cho Dang has been my source of comfort food, especially through the pandemic, when I needed to study for school (especially when I had to be up at odd hours for zoom for my school in the Midwest). The service has always been excellent. I have found the interior to be quite spacious, and well ventilated so that one feels comfortable when enjoying the warm food. If you need more banchan, you can always ask for more. The staff also are so very attentive to refilling your water cup and check to see if you need anything. The soondubu combination is amazing for how it is priced, and I always find myself taking the rest home for lunch the next day. Having lived in Korea for a year, this restaurant brings back so many memories. I love how healthy everything tastes. There's a plethora of veggies so there's no excuse to not get enough fiber in the diet. For these reasons, I give full marks. :) read more

For some reason I've been on a Korean food craze, so we decided to go to Chodang last night after doing some Christmas shopping at Ala Moana. When we got there, there was only one table left that was really small and right by the door. So once another table left, the worker was so nice to move us to the bigger table. The have every day specials on the front of the menu that is so worth it for the price. I got the kimchee & pork chigae and my boyfriend got the meat jun. Both were only $9.50! And we also ordered a side of fried tofu that comes with the mandu sauce. And of course it comes with all the yummy banchans. Everything was so tasty and I was so happy that it was so reasonable! Nowadays Korean food is super expensive so I couldn't believe our bill was only $25 for everything. We'll definitely be back. I went with one of my cousins today as we were curious. There's another Korean place not too far from here that we'd been to before but their set-up is fancy. This place was very casual and quiet as there weren't too many people but it doesn't feel weird to talk to your friend. Don't get me wrong, it seemed popular! People were going in and out as my cousin and I ate so I assume they do takeout. I have never had bibimbap but it was just as delicious as it looked. I was excited to try it as I always see it in dramas. The portion wasn't too little or too much for me! I felt satisfied but not too full to where I'd feel tired quickly while walking around Ala Moana mall next door. It has lots of veggies and protein so I felt happy eating something nutritious. I do feel like you should try look at the menu before coming in because Aunty was quick to take orders. She did ask if we needed time though so it's not like she was rushing us. She did check up on us maybe once but that might be because my cousin and I looked like we were talking a lot. Total was $32 for two people (bibimbap, fish, tofu soup, banchan). Not bad at all and is what I would usually spend at little restaurants like this. 5 stars because it did meet my expectations and bc first experience went smoothly. Haven't been in a while, but gf came back home and she wanted meat jun after our hike. 9 of us hungry, head to Cho Dang. They gave us a long table by the bathroom. Perfect, out of the way and we fit with good space. Tables are narrow which wouldn't normally be a problem except we ordered so much food. Pupu mandoo, seafood pancake, duk-mochi-thing. I didn't get the mandoo, but it got whacked. Seafood pancake was my fave. Maybe could have used more seafood, but otherwise it was cooked perfectly for our preferences. Nice and crispy outside. Sauce ono. I just eat it with kim chee and happy. I'm not huge on mochi, but they said was really good. Mochi soft and sauce had slight kick. 3 had soondubu...all said still as good as before. 2 of us had kalbitang. Yummy. Not too salty. I could use more meat, but did have quite a bit. 1 meat jun. Pretty good size meat...maybe could be thicker. 1 stone pot bibimbap. Super hot stone pot. Great to make the crispy kaki mochi rice. I thought could use more meat...but obviously I like my meat. 1 fried rice for the kids to share. Looked okay. There weren't any complaints. Still gotta wear mask to go in and the workers were wearing masks even if the mandate ended. Made me feel more comfortable. A perfect end to a perfect day. In my opinion, the best kalbitang (short rib soup) in the state!! I've tried so many kalbitang around O'ahu and around the state, but this is hands down THE BEST!! So flavorful and so good. This place is small, maybe not the nicest in appearance but makes up for it in flavor town with most traditional Korean dishes!! My husband and I enjoyed their food besides the terrible service. The old Korean lady was extremely rude from the moment we entered Cho Dang. She gave us this unfriendly look. When my husband was ordering, he didn't finish his order yet and the lady just walked away. He didn't get a chance to add more orders. To be honest, I had hard time understanding her and she raised her voice because I said, "pardon me". Upon checking out, I signed the receipt and she grabbed it. She said, "add charge to the card" (She's talking about the tip). I ignored her because why would I pay for something I didn't receive then walked out. (I think tips are for great customer service.) I felt really bad for not giving her tip. This is the first time I didn't give tip to a restaurant. After checking on Yelp, I'm glad that she didn't get anything from me because I didn't get anything from her. Other than that, kudos to the kitchen staffs. They made delicious foods. I've been going to Cho dang for a while now and I have to the reviews on Yelp are accurate. the service isn't welcoming but they are sure to get you what you need and I consider that to be good service! For instance, They don't refill your water unless you ask and They have difficulty explaining to new comers what's in each plate. This is my advice: read the tips and comments on Yelp, take a gander at the recent pictures of the plates on Yelp and you should have no trouble! On a positive note, I haven't been to Chodang in over a year but when I walked in, the place looked a lot cleaner then I remember and the prices haven't changed! Love this spot for cheap Korean food. Always get the daily special because you get a decent amount of food for a great price. Meat Jun comes with two pieces which was more than enough for me. I also love getting their tofu soup which comes with soft tofu and pork belly, and seafood pancake. Great deal! Bibimbap is also a great choice! When they have specials I love trying them so this time we got the fried zucchini and spicy pork. The fried zucchini was alittle soggy but it could be because we did take out. The spicy pork was tasty, but alittle oily. Only reason I can't give them 5 stars is because their service isn't always the nicest. As we walked in I asked "are you folks still allowing dine-in?" The lady who was working the front counter kept saying "no we close" so I friendly asked "so we can't order anymore it's only 8:16pm (when i looked down at my phone again) ?" & she just turned us away. So we just walked out & went to another business near by. First & foremost I believe she didn't like the way we looked because she gave us a stink face. Like ok I'm thinking maybe you had a terrible day & I've been taught to "kill others with kindness" so of course I kept my composure. This is my boyfriend favorite spot. I've come here twice with him now and it never fails to hit the spot. I love that it's a small, cozy restaurant, but that can also mean there may be a wait during busier times like dinner. It's convenient to Ala Moana mall and beach with free parking in the plaza. We always get the meat jun off the all day menu (lots of inexpensive options) and the kimchi and pork stew. Careful with the stew since it comes bubbling/piping hot. My bf and I have been here a few times before, and our experiences have been pretty good! Our most recent visit we both ordered soondubu, and i also wanted to try their beef/kimchi fried rice. We've only ever had the soondubu before, so i was looking to try something else. I ended up loving the rice more than i thought i would, lol. Not too saucy or dry, and the kimchi was made the way i like-not sweet but more on the fermented side. The banchan were a bit too salty for me, and the egg on the fried rice was fried, not over easy like what im used to, but i still enjoyed it! Chodang was the first Korean restaurant that introduced me to and sparked my love for Soondubu (soft tofu soup). I mainly love coming here for the soup and banchan sides, or if I need a quick bite to eat. This place has been around for a long time. It's location is tucked away in a little corner of a small shopping court next to Eggs n Things, Taiyo Ramen, and ​what was formerly Payless Shoes. A plus about this restaurant​ is that they stay open until 1 am​! Parking in the lot can be busy depending on the time of day you go. Luckily, since they're conveniently located right next to Ala Moana you can easily just park there, and walk over after shopping. Chodang's dishes are always consistent, and I receive really quick service from the ajumma's who work here. Their menu is extensive, but for first timers who aren't familiar with Korean cuisine, it would be in your best interest to check out the pictures​ from Yelp to help you narrow down your​ choices. One of the few unfortunate but understandable things is that their prices have increased over the past few years but that hasn't stopped people from coming back (including myself). I don't consider this restaurant to be one of the top spots on my list as far as food quality goes, but if you're​ craving typical Korean food that isn't Yummy's, this place does the job. read more

Tonight I had kalbi tang for the 4th time and it may be the last time as it no longer tastes as good as the first time. I understand how batches differ, but it is an easy preparation and the key components need to be consistent in that the beef needs to be trimmed of excess fat and the seasonings need to be flavorful and the meat needs to be tender. The last 2 times that I have had this dish the broth has been much thinner in flavor than the first 2 times and the beef has not been tender. I have had to put the soup on to boil for another 90 minutes or so which does help, but it should already be tender. This restaurant is slated to be demolished and I am still on the search for a good Korean restaurant at just about any price point. They are all so expensive now and the food quality is so hit or miss. If they could resurrect Choi's Garden in another appealing venue and have consistently good and fairly priced dishes it would be a sure-fire success and gold mine. Hope that we can get a more upscale Korean venue with decent food soon! read more

We were craving Korean food one night and this was the closest one to where we were hanging out at the time. The servers were so kind and helpful without being overly so (you know, those servers that come every few minutes to stand and look at you to see if you need anything or ask how everything is mid bite so you can't fully answer but just nod with enthusiasm). The food was great. We got the seafood pancake, beef bone broth soup, kalbi soup, and dumpling noodle soup. The seafood pancake was flavorful and crispy on the edges. The beef bone broth soup was my favorite. Incredibly soothing and savory. I will definitely be back for that dish alone. The only reason I took off one star is because their side dishes weren't the best (not a huge problem since the actual food is yummy) and the restaurant itself felt a tad sterile. Been trying to keep positive with Chodangs all these years that I patronized this restaurant, despite the rude lady who I think is the owner. There were so many incidents with this lady being sassy and just plain rude. My teenage son and his friends once ate here a couple years ago and she literally approached them and told them to don't forget to leave a tip. Worse part is they did. I wouldn't have left crap if she asked like that. I deliberately stayed away from here for months and months, but we were in the area so I figured maybe she won't be there or maybe she changed. I was dead wrong! Still, her customer service sucked! I went to pay, and not a peep out of her. I guess she wanted me to read her mind. I know it wasn't laryngitis because she took my order on the phone. Since it was take out, I left no tip and rightfully so. When she handed my food, she just walked away. No "Thank you" or thank you for patronizing our restaurant even if the economy is bad and prices here are not cheap. No thank you so much for coming, please come again. Marl my word, I will never, ever come here again. I was such a loyal customer if after her rudeness and poor Yelp reviews, but I will not be a sucker and be treated this way ever again. When my husband craves for something korean, the first thing that comes to mind is ChoDang Restaurant This small, humble restaurant located at the back of Ala Moana Center has been our go-to Korean restaurant for years (me, 2 years now.. my husband 6 years). We're tried many korean food places here in town but we keep on coming back to Chodang. Our favorites from their Menu is the Beef Kalbi and Seafood Soondubu. Beef Kalbi - very tender and juicy. Well seasoned, well marinaded and nicely cooked.. grilled to perfection! Best paired with hot rice. It's just one of the best! *ooopps, did I say the word "Best" two times? lol Seafood Soondubu - Seafood Soondubu is a spicy silken tofu soup with clams and shrimp topped with green onions. It's always served boiling hot. This is our favorite soup for all seasons. Tteokbokki - or Korean spicy rice cake soup. I love how their Tteokbokki taste. The soup was not as sticky, I can taste the richness of the Korean Dashi and the subtle sweetness of the rice cake. They also serve 5 complimentary sides and it kind of changes every time we dine there. I think the default sides are kimchi radish and kimchi cabbage. Customer service was good too. They always check on us and refill our water glasses. They have a clean, humble place too. I think what saddens me about this restaurant is the frequent change of management which affects the prices - they mark up the prices like 2 times a year. It's just weird. Yay! I'm a fan. When my tiny little movie maven friend said "let's go to Chodang before the 1:55 movie" I thought "WTH, she knows her food" and that she does! So meeting at the restaurant and seating ourselves at a corner table, I started perusing the menu. So many pictures with tempting soups, meats, stews and appetizers. As I looked around nearly table had a bubbling little pot of red soup with white floaties in it. Asking my buddie, I was told it was Soondubu and a must have at Chodang...gee I hoped there was some left, I'm not kidding...every table had at least one bowl on it. So at her suggestion it was ordered with clams. Meat Jun and fried Mandoo were also ordered and I'm wondering what my friend would be eating as those piping hot, bubbling bowl looked smallish. Shortly, the smiling, overworked waitress started delivering glasses of ice cold water and small plates of banchan. A minute later, a plate of Meat Jun and a plate with six beautiful Fried Mandoo set on top of a paper napkin we're delivered. Then one bubbly soup, then the other.....did I mention the one waitress was working her tail off? Okay, what can one say about banchan, it was okay to good. The Meat Jun was okay, I like mine thicker but this was very inexpensive so that adds points. The Fried Mandoo was great! Crispy on one side, steamed on the other. Loved the sauce served with it and found myself dredging the Jun in it. I've had Fried Mandoo a number of times previously and usually only once at any restaurant, never to be ordered again as the wrapper will be too doughy and tough. I hate when it sticks to the roof of your mouth....makes it hard to talk! The Mandoo here is outstanding. Okay, drum roll please...the soup is no longer boiling in the bowl so I take a sip. OMG please give me a straw! The soup is still scorching hot and I want to spoon it in my mouth but can't. Talk about frustration. Oh look, rice. Sooo I put rice on my spoon and dip it in the soup scooping up a flotilla of silky tofu and in one swoop it lands in my mouth. Oh oh oh it's too hot but oh oh oh so fabulous. Apparently this soup can be ordered with any number of meats, fish or poultry, I really liked the clams and will order it again. I will be back soon to try other items but will order the soup too. Getting some friends together will mean more sides or entrees. Parking is easy and free. Easy to access and neat and clean plus it not Keeamoku. The restaurant is bigger than it appears from outside as it's an "L" shape. Remember, there is only one waitress who apparently does it all so be patient and she'll be pleasant. read more
