This tiny Wonka-esq shop is adorned with amazing tins with covered with pictures of virtually every street sign within city limits which can be filled with the things dreams are made of... or something like that. This store is definitely worth driving across town for. It's small but filled with an impressively diverse selection of chocolate from all over the world. The owner is quite knowledgeable about all the products and can give good recommendations if you are looking for something specific. My favorite is the chocolate covered orange slices from the Spanish company Mittica. It's like $9 and I can eat them all in one setting. I also like the bars with added flavors such as Rose or Jasmine. The chocolate here is definitely pricer but it depends what you like to spend your money on. Some people buy a new iPhone every year but I prefer to buy high quality chocolate. read more

Holy choco-moley! Tucked onto the streets in Noe Valley, you'll find this cute little chocolate shop with enough of a selection you'll have a hard time not walking out with more than $20 worth. The shop owner, a Manhattan native, is well knowledgeable and kind to answer any questions you have. He also makes and sells the tins that line the walls, and will make custom ones if you bring in the image. read more

Chocolate Covered is good reminder to myself to not judge a book by its cover. After a disappointing dinner at the sushi down the street, we decided to take a walk along the nearby shops. From the street, Chocolate Covered's window is filled with funky, antique-looking, blue tin/boxes. I wasn't into it. I've been to a lot of "old timey" candy stores and they're usually not that great. My husband persuaded me to give the store a try. My mind was blown. It's small inside, but the shelves are packed with so many chocolate bars and other chocolate products. I like trying small batch bean to bar chocolate, and I was impressed with Chocolate Covered's selection of high-end companies. They have local, U.S., and international brands. We wandered up and down the aisles multiple times, each time grabbing an additional chocolate bar to buy. We saw the owner guy, but he kinda ignored us and at other times he was busy with other customers. I got overwhelmed with all the choices (especially since there were no samples out.) Eventually, I walked up to the counter and asked Fontaine if she had any recommendations. She asked what our preferences were and made some suggestions. Then she asked if we wanted to try samples. Samples? Yeahhh! The samples were fun to try and helped narrow down what we were looking for. It was great talking to her. She knew her stuff and was very friendly. I saw the sign and made a beeline from across the street because I have a serious weakness for anything chocolate. And I'm so glad we stopped in because the owner, Jack, was such a pleasure to talk to. The man obviously knows his chocolate and was a walking encyclopedia of really anything - you tell him what you like (such as cinnamon or peanut butter) and he'll pull things off the shelves and run through all the details. Jack was also wonderfully generous with the samples. On our first visit there, we mentioned we liked spiciness, so he immediately pulled out a few pieces of chile-flecked for us to try, plus these praline truffles. And, as we were walking out on our second visit, the customer behind us mentioned one particular brand and Jack handed him his last few pieces for free. The walls are covered floor to ceiling with chocolate from all over the world, as well as these cool tin boxes made from scratch. Would definitely love to come back and try to even make a dent in that crazy chocolate selection. I was a very bad Catholic last year and guilt eventually caught up with me so I made it a point to observe lent this year. I told the bf, "I'm giving up desserts/sweets for lent." This is definitely a splurge on my part since we haven't seen each other in 4 years. I wanted to grab every single thing of the shelf! But I mixed and match a variety of bars including: Mo's bacon bar in both milk and dark chocolate, Mo's mushroom and walnut chocolate bar, Chocolove's chilies and cherries and crystallized ginger flavor. I also threw in a couple of fancy wrapped chocolates from Paris and Spain. The last thing I grabbed was Chocopologie's Rosewater bar -- it's a rich dark chocolate with delicate rose buds. The first time I tried this was on a New Mexico trip awhile back and have not found it since. I'm so glad this shop carries it! The owner was kind enough to put my chocolates in a clear plastic bag for me complete with a red ribbon so it would look presentable. He also gave me more information on his products and was proud to share his knowledge on chocolates. Reasonable prices for quality chocolates and supporting a local business makes me feel good about my purchases. It took me forever to get on with my review. I work down the street and always wonder why have I not known this place any sooner?! I won't go into too much details as most reviewers did such a good job. It is like a wonderland. An offbeat store that adds character to an otherwise unadventurous street. The proprietor is a friendly chap who gives off that "caring local business owner vibe" and his son and daughter were hanging out with him watching the Giants game... a very sweet picture if you pardon the pun. I was so excited. I was in constant communication with Jack through email. Letting me know when the product would arrive and when it arrived as he would say "the bird has landed". I wasn't sure what type of truffles he ordered but when he told me it was Missionary Chocolates from Portland, OR. I would have given him a hug over the phone. When my honey and I went to Portland, this was one of the places we were not able to go, due to the location. Once the "bird landed", he emailed me right away and told me he would keep some on hold. I quickly text my honey to see if he can pick some up. Sure enough, he went within the hour. Thanks Babe!! When he arrived home, I was so surprise. He bought an entire box (5 truffles) @ $18 and 3 additional truffles that were sold individually. The truffles were not your average size. They put See's or Godiva to shame, twice the size. When I bit into the chocolate hearts and the peppermint, it was a total ORGASMIC experience. AWWW!!! I didn't even want to share. (best believe my honey got some that night and I ain't talkin about chocolate) So, with that last thought!! This place is a hidden chocolate wonderland! While it doesn't have the most pronounced entrance along the street, just look out for the store with all the blue tin boxes hanging in the window to find this amazing place. I was about to walk past this until I saw that the window display also had a sign reading to the extent of "what's with all these boxes? Come in and find out!" which intrigued me enough to do so! I really didn't know what to expect and once I entered through the small rickety door, I was pleasantly surprised and immediately transported to a candy store of Willy Wonka proportions. I felt as if I was in some whimsical movie, because the dimly lit, tight skinny store had all kinds of chocolate filling the wall shelves, all leading to the end where the quirky old store owner presided behind the desk, offering free samples. I was blown away with the amount of selection and diversity of chocolates this narrow store had! There is all kinds of chocolate, from all over the world here, definitely pleasing everyone. Plus, check out all the blue tin boxes on the higher part of the walls! I ended buying what the friendly store owner said was their most popular: dark chocolate with pistachios and cayenne! After telling him that I was a dark chocolate fan, he helped me select a gradient of different dark chocolates so I could get a range of tastes 60% to 85% dark. They even had ginger covered chocolates which was a perfect gift my friend Josh's b-day. They also have little/medium tins with street signs printed on them. The last brand of Chocolate I would give a friend seeking to try American chocolate Hersheys. Why? Because Hersheys and snickers and twix are all mass produced, watered down versions of true American chocolate. Chocolate Covered has a warm exterior, a bit unassuming, but the inside is unprecedented in my experience with chocolate shops. Jack, the owner, has put in a great deal of work collecting chocolates from all over the world. He is very knowledgeable and will even recommend something based on your personality alone! Jack has got everything but Hersheys, from French chocolates to German to Spanish. If you're a cocoa head, ask about the 100% cocoa. They actually have more 100%s than 99s! Dark chocolate fans: If you want something local, try out tchos line. They also have some other SF made darks, plenty to choose from. If you REALLY love dark chocolate, ask for Blankart's 95%. It's from Spain and it's by far the best dark chocolate I've had (it's comparable to Green and Blacks 85% if you've had that, BUT BETTER).
