I've always wanted to come here as there aren't a lot of Korean food options in Athens. Always though it was a sit down place but it's more of a diner / takeout place. The health code violations and lack of any respect by the employee, Greg, were atrocious, touching money then my food directly without gloves or washing his hands. Refused to get me a new plate from the cook in the back. Was rude and condescending. When I asked his manager's name, he said there were a lot of them and he couldn't remember, despite claiming to have worked there for 7 years. When I called and asked to speak to a manager the next day I spoke to Claudia who said she would talk to him about the health code violation but that she didn't know what I wanted her to do about it otherwise. Choo Choo's is college central for cheap late night food! In a college town, you can always find college students drawn to Choo Choo's. As it might even be an "iconic" fast food place at UGA, don't have high expectations. They serve a variety of hibachi entrees. The entrees come with vegetables, fried rice or steamed rice, and 3 sauces. The most popular entree would have to be the teriyaki chicken or steak entree. They also serve salad, rice bowls, and traditional appetizers. They're infamously known for their signature "yellow sauce" (their version of yum yum sauce). I'm personally not a fan of it, but others have been known to drench their whole meal in it. The sauce has a liquid consistency and taste like a diluted yum yum sauce. They're open until 3:30am almost every single day. And the prices are quite cheap. I've had multiple friends complain of food poisoning issues. For broke UGA students looking to get filled up at a cheap price, Choo Choo is the place to go. As a UGA alumni myself. Choo Choo had satisfied the seemingly endless hunger I experienced during college time and time again. The food itself is nothing amazing, but it gets the job done for the price you pay. Whatever entrée you order, Choo Choo always comes with friend rice, mixed vegetables, the meat of your choice, and two containers of yellow sauce. I have no idea what the yellow sauce is made of to this day, but that stuff is addicting. Every time I have been here, I have always gotten the ribeye steak ($6.95) or Teriyaki chicken ($5.50). The best way to eat to have it to go whether you eat in or out. I cannot prove if it its true, but I strongly believe they give you more food when you have it to go. Once you get the food, mix the yellow sauce onto your entrée and go crazy. You'll have a quality meal or even two meal's worth (if you're not that hungry). This place gives you a lot of food like A LOT of food. If you have experience with the place, you will know to collect on their coupons and get amazing deals with a friend and split the cost. These coupons give you amazing deals like get one entrée and another for free, get one entrée and half off other, etc. I see a lot of reviews saying that people were disappointed and the food were salty. Thankfully, that changed this past weekend, as food from Choo Choo was in the game plan after the 2010 G-Day Game. It was a great place for our group of six to eat, not only for the cheap prices, self-serve coke fountain, and yummy food, but because it's a pay at the counter type of place that doesn't care if you take up a big table while your group straggles in over the better part of 30 minutes. I had the teriyaki steak student special, which was a huge plate of food and a fountain drink for just $6.50. The steak was tender, the veggies were cooked perfectly, and they gave us extra yellow sauce, which I promptly used to drown my fried rice. I posted a review 12/17 about how 'you had to be drunk to consume this rice' , well now i've found out that i have food poisoning after a doctors visit. They probably use old rice stored in a rice cooker not even sealed properly. Be careful eating here or you will get sick like me. I stopped coming a few years ago when I noticed a decline in quality, but went back for the first time last week. Not only have they hiked up the prices, but the meat in my rice bowl was inedible. Always hits the spot. I could eat hibachi every day of the week, and having an affordable, tasty place like this within ten minutes of my dorm makes it a little difficult not to. Not quality by any measure. This is basically one step BELOW mall food court hibachi. The hibachi is eatable but not very tasty. I guess that's why you get 3 sauces to help jazz it up. I also tried 3 different versions of the fusion tacos. These are even worse. It's hard to mess up a taco, but Choo Choo has done that by using poor quality meat, some iceberg lettuce then dumping some sauce all over it that taste like Mc Donald's special sauce. The hibachi is tolerable if your in need of food, it's late and your on the eastside of Athens. I would advise you to stir clear of the tacos though. This is one of my favorite places in town because of how quick it is to get yummy hibachi style food. The steamed pork dumplings are the best! Eat them with sriracha. They taste great fried too, but I try to limit the fried dumplings to once in a blue moon. :) Usually if I'm extra hungry I'll also order the teriyaki chicken entree, which comes with fried rice, teriyaki chicken, steamed vegetables, two yellow sauces, and 1 ginger sauce. The portions are HUGE! Unless you have a huge appetite, you'll probably make two meals out of one entree. I've eaten the whole thing only a few times before. For the price the food is great. One of the things I love most about Choo Choo is that it's opened late, and if you want a hot tasty meal in the middle of the night, it's one of the only places in town that can satisfy that craving at that hour. I used to love this place and it always had a crowd. We hadn't eaten here in a year. What a difference a year makes. I noticed the crowd seemed to be gone and wondered why. We ordered. I had the shrimp Udon noodle bowl and a Bulgogi taco, my wife ordered the steak, vegetables and rice. We waited and waited. There was hardly another person there but it took over twenty minutes to get our food. While waiting we looked around because we began to notice things. The floor was filthy. The trash receptacle had dirt and smudges all over it as did the booths and some of the chairs. When I went to the bathroom the door had greasy smudges all over it. I opened it with my shoulder, but wanted to wash my shirt after. The Udon was a flavorless broth with slimy noodles in it. The shrimp was a soggy mess. Oh, and by the way when they say shrimp they mean two. The other unidentifiable substances in there were either flavorless or disgusting. I didn't come close to finishing it. The Bulgogi taco actually was good. My wife's was average, but not outstanding. My advice is they pressure was the entire inside and redo their recipes. It is a shame to see a place go down so quickly. This used to be a staple place to go, but we have crossed it off our list. Take your antibiotics before you go. But I come back again and again for their bibimbap, which is quite good especially considering that you can even find bibimbap in Athens. Good value on the bibimbap, and okay value on the calamari as you don't get all that much calamari but its pretty tasty. It was a good deal through Grub Hub to order from a local restaurant - most were closed, it was after 9:00 (Athens curfew time??!!) I had heard by word of mouth that Choo Choo is very very good and not that expensive. I thought it was Korean food we were ordering. A simple dish or two perhaps, I've never eaten Korean and didn't know if we would like it or not. Chicken and fried rice and cabbage. Not much chicken and it was cubed and cooked like another Japanese Express restaurant I've been to and was not impressed. The steak - was cooked tender and well done but was bland and there was so much fried rice and cabbage. No wonder it is "reasonably" priced. I should have come to Yelp to read a review before ordering, looks like some of us had the same things to say. $7 and some change for chopped up steak with Asian barbecue sauce and tons of fried rice (that was also bland). We had no problems with the 3rd party delivery service and the food was made and delivered well ahead of schedule. However I will not be ordering from there again.
