I haven't been eating out much during the pandemic. But I was having a very specific craving for Choolaah, and decided to take a chance with their online ordering platform. Wow. I am kicking myself for not having done this sooner. I was nervous about going in as this location is typically always very busy. When I saw they accepted online orders, I placed one immediately and designated a pick-up time to try to minimize my experience with too much contact. No one was more shocked than me when I pulled into the parking lot and saw they had specific spots designated for curbside pickup. You text a number on the sign to let them know you are there and they keep you updated as your order is ready and on its way out. We arrived a little early and were so happy our order was already waiting for us inside. One of their employees brought it out quickly and gave it to us at our window. Overall, they have this down to a science and it was one of the easiest, safest, most reliable pick ups I've experienced during this deeply unusual time. We've been regulars at Choolah since the day it opened till we moved out of Cleveland. And even now, when I go back to the Cleve, a trip to Choolah is on the books. This is not authentic Indian food, but doesn't even pretend to be. Think of it like Chipotle for BBQed Indian food. But much better food, cleaner and overall nicer. The tandoori roti is fresh as can be! Tandoori chicken and paneer are both nicely done. Biryani is good (but not authentic Hyderabadi biryani of course) All items on the menu are worth trying! The mango lassi is quite good (but not any different from mango lassi elsewhere) The decor and ambience is casual but clearly a lot of attention has been paid to detail. The table actually has a row of books in the center that have been made a part of the table. There are three tandoors (clay ovens) - each named individually :) Since Indian food is eaten by hand, there is a hand washing station and that in itself is an experience! I also liked the pagers so everyone didn't congregate by the entrance and register. The service has gotten a whole lot slower. I had to wait 20 minutes for my food. Choolaah is a favorite of my vegan boss so we order take out at least once a month. The food is such a good value, it is so filling. No matter what I get I am always full and happy! I love their sauces, the mint one is my favorite if I get a protein, the mango is probably my other favorite. The most important of my review is their staff, they are stellar! I have NEVER had bad services here. They are so kind, helpful and friendly! I've never even seen an employee look cranky, tired or in a bad mood, which is a huge feat in this society! I understand I had a $3 up charge for lamb, but $32 is outrageous for fast casual lunch. You get 4 mini somosas and sauces for over $6 . They charge $6 versus $3, which was just the somosas without the sauce. If you order somosas anywhere else you get full size somosas with multiple sauces for free. Flavor of the food was good, but not better than any full service Indian restaurant. The pricing of the food is just ways too steep for fast casual. To put things in perspective, I am of Bengali decent, where the food is not the same, but very similar to Indian. The spices may be extravagant to most who are not Southeast Asian, but the core ingredients are very modest: rice, veggies, potatoes and beans with the occasional chicken or lamb. To overcharge so substantially for these ingredients is atrocious and damn near criminal. I am in no hurry to be back. read more

Looking for a place to eat today and I couldn't decide where I wanted to go. Then I remember the time my friends introduced me to Choolaah and I decided to come here for lunch again because it was so good. Think of this place like a Chipotle, but with Indian food. They have different protein options like chicken and tofu for example. And they have online ordering for those who want to place an order beforehand and grab it to go. You have the option to order in the place and take it to go as well. Anyways, I came around 12:30 so it was bustling because everyone was coming for lunch. It was packed but there was still open tables here and there. I ordered the chicken tikka masala with the naan and it came out to $9.99 and then I got the mango lassi which was $3.50 extra. The chicken tikka masala was very tasty and I enjoyed it. They give you a decent amount of food but I kinda wished it was a little more. The first time I came, I left a little hungry but this time I was satisfied.. maybe it was because I was super hungry the first time? The mango lassi is always good and refereeing. Why hasn't Choolaah come to NY yet?! The concept of Indian fast food is genius, and the food here is delicious for both the price and the speed it came out in (my meal came out in just two minutes!). My boyfriend and I shared a side of samosa chaat and customized our own BBQ bowl, which included large chunks of paneer cheese, brown basmati rice, rich tikka masala sauce and a side of naan. Although Americanized, everything was full of flavor. If you aren't interested in their signature BBQ bowls, you can also order biryani, salads, tandoori wraps, various sides, and desserts. The restaurant also has some classic Indian beverages - I had the "Choolaah Chai" tea, which was good but needed a stronger masala spice flavor in it. This experience consists of but not limited to friendliness of the service staff, the speed at which the food is made to order, the quality of ingredients used, the ease of ordering from a well designed menu, the authenticity of the cuisine, the effort made by the restaurant to include healthy yet delicious options and accessibility. 1. Staff: Sincere & phenomenal. Speed: Food made fresh and served fast but it's not fast food! You can see the whole prep to cooking process through the glass windows and know the food is made with the highest quality ingredients. Authenticity: I'm South Indian so Choolaah is not what I'm used to from back home since this cuisine is North Indian. While I can't say that the flavor profile is identical to what I've experienced back in India, I can say that Choolaah does a very good job in delivering their promise as a company, which is, to deliver yum for EVERYONE. I understand that the social norms of what is considered "yum" in India is completely different to the collective palettes of Americans. In that aspect, I can argue that, yes, Choolaah does offer authentic North Indian cuisine to Americans but it is tailored to the palettes of what Americans can tolerate as far as the level of heat in spiciness. In other words, hardcore foodies who recently visit Cleveland from India would probably not consider Choolaah "authentic" in the since it doesn't exactly remind them of what they're used to back home. However, for an American Indian like myself who can't exactly afford the time nor money to travel to India to get similar food experiences, Choolaah is a close second to back home. 4/5 6. Health: Another reason why Indian foodies from back home wouldn't consider this authentic is because we all know Indian food from restaurants is the farthest thing from being healthy! The restaurant culture for Indian food is notorious for lack of using leafy greens, the abundance of frozen veggies soaked in cream, butter or ghee, the unbalanced proportion of carbs, proteins & fat ratio, and the overall hygiene of the food is prepared in the kitchen. I used to work at an Indian restaurant here in America myself and it is not as clean as people are led to believe back there. Choolaah, however, is doing an amazing job in actively changing the negative stigma around Indian cuisine by offering truly healthier substitutions for some less healthy choices. Patrons can look into what goes down in the back end from the prep area, to the dishwasher, to the huge tandoori clay ovens and the packing station. This level of transparency really makes me trust that there's nothing shady going on back there. From the sweet potatoes, cauli, and peppers, all the way to the wholesome brown rice and even the local Amish made paneer, I truly get a sense of clean with every bite. It's definitely a challenge to make Indian food that tastes authentic yet healthy but Choolaah deserves an A for pioneering an effort in this sector. 4/5 7. The Location: I drive from Berea to Beachwood to grab Choolaah more than once a week and the drive is totally worth it for me. However, it's not so appealing to some of my friends that live in the far west side. I'm looking forward towards the Ohio city location openingwhich only means that I'll be eating at Choolaah more often. (Not rating this since it's subject to change soon.) Found this a Choolah by accident while traveling. I've been to the one in King of Prussia, PA many times and it has always been a favorite and unfortunately I live many hours away from it. I was very excited to find this here and have the opportunity to eat here. Needless to say it is outstanding as always and the food is great. I really can't recommend this place enough and wouldn't hesitate to come again. This location lives up to the high standards set by the other one I've been to. The not-so-good: Tikka Masala is bad. Thin, tomatoey, bland -- nothing about it resembles authentic Tikka Masala. Nan was limp, not at all crispy, and just sort of blah. I do appreciate greatly that when I chose non spicy options while ordering online e.g. no Serrano peppers, no hot sauce, this resulted in my food actually not being hot so I was afforded the uncommon opportunity to appreciate some Indian inspired food/spices without any painful heat! The paneer was a choking hazard at best- cubes of completely dried out, almost jerky like cubes which had almost zero paneer bite give and almost no flavor due to being so dry. Loved the concept of this restaurant! The design is modern and filled with interesting art. I love how you can see the food being made in the tandoor in front of you. The restaurant definitely makes Indian food more approachable, and I appreciate the different options you can create. We got the samosa chaat, chicken tikka masala Choolaah bowl. the lamb power bowl with black lentils. The chicken tikka masala was overall good but underwhelming - the flavors could have been more robust and the spices could have been increased. I also thought it was too much rice for the amount of curry. However we really liked the lamb which was seasoned and cooked wonderfully, and loved the black lentils! Our favorite dish was definitely the chaat which was presented beautifully and really yummy! Also really liked the mango lemonade we got. As always, I can always taste *slightly* more oil on veggies than ever needed, but not any more than Chipotle or similar chains and not enough to make you feel like the meal is overall unhealthy. Even naan had a lot of flavor. Asked if you needed utensils, very friendly and efficient. Has a loyalty program, which I need to make use of and I feel like every fast casual needs to stand out from the myriad of options out there. The location is great and horrible at the same time, because right on the main shopping strip in Beachwood, but right near where the highway off/on ramps are with a lot of incoming traffic. I've literally been coming to this spot since it opened during the Thanksgiving week of 2014. No flexing intended, just putting it out there so I can qualify my experiences with Choolah. I've seen this place evolve, for the better and for the worse. As of the time I finally decided to write a review of this place on Yelp, it's getting a 4 star from me for one major knock: the price. Choolah food is very tasty. It's not "traditional" Indian but it's more than what I'd expect from a BYO place. They've got a variety of proteins to serve atop beds of rice and veggies. Proteins are all flavorful in their own regards, meaning you can taste the variety if you switch options. I usually always get the chicken but I know people who love their paneer, salmon, and lamb meatballs. I personally think the veggies are underrated, I could eat their cauliflower everyday. The masalas to top off are all pretty good in my opinion. I personally think the black lentil dal is the best one they offer and I think the tikka masala is way too sweet and oily. I don't usually order Sandwiches from Choolah but they're all very tasty. They do a great job balancing flavors across the components and the use of a naan for the wrap is a noticeable improvement from any standard tortilla. Now where Choolah has disappointed me is in the price of their food. The last time I went I paid $12.63 for a chicken perfect balance bowl. Food is tasty don't get me wrong, but it's no where near worth paying 60% more for this bowl compared to other equally tasty BYO places. Independent of the economics of Choolah's food, I think something between 10 and 11 dollars is the most anyone should pay for their bowls. Masalas are more time intensive and I don't doubt they carefully prepare their proteins but nothing involved in the bowl really seems to scream that it's deserving of this crazy uncharge. Also, portion sizes are sometimes egregiously small even independent of the price you're paying. You can see in the photos they're giving nearly 4oz of chicken in a side order that costs $5.50! If you like Indian, honestly you're better ordering takeout from a restaurant and getting much more for what you're paying for compared to some of the portion sizes here. read more

We had a movie plan tonight and everyone agreed to stuff themselves with food before watching the movie. We were looking for some place near Atlas Cinemas and Choolaah Indian bbq showed up. It's been almost 2 years since I last went there. The place still looks the same, top notch cleanliness, super fast service and delicious food. In terms of authenticity, I'd say the food is pretty close to what we get in India. I love their big table which has a lot of books pasted underneath and the decor of the place. The staff is very courteous and the options are limited and very user friendly to choose. Even someone who doesn't know anything about Indian food can go and order a delicious combo just by going through the menu. You can see what is being cooked inside the kitchen through the glass walls and this is something that really appeals to me. Their hand wash device is one of a kind and is called a Jacuzzi for hands. Do try it. For dinner, I had a barbecue chicken combo with white rice, naan and chickpeas curry along with a samosa chaat. I was really hungry and looking for a good place to eat when visiting my parents. We found this place in Yelp and thought it seemed like a good place to try. It's a fast food style restaurant, so you order at the counter, take a pager, and go up and get your food when it's ready. Our food was ready just minutes after we sat down. They were super friendly and helpful. We asked for recommendations on the sauces, and they gave us samples of all of them. They also gave us samples of the drinks. We got a chicken choolah bowl with white rice and Tikka Masala. For our second dish, we got a lamb meatball perfect balance bowl with white rice and black lentil daal. We of course had to get naan with both. The mint ginger lemonade was our drink of choice. Everything was quite good. We both liked the Tikka Masala bowl more. The chicken was very flavorful and we loved the sauce. The other bowl was also good, but we're didn't like the sauce quite as much and as much as I liked the vegetables, I didn't like that they only gave you half of the sauce. It wasn't quite enough. The lamb meatballs were good though. The naan was a great addition and the drink was fantastic. I do feel like they nickel and dime you a bit. They charge you quite a bit more for the vegetable bowl and having to pay extra for naan at an Indian restaurant feels like a crime.
