We been going to CHOP 10 years and just had a nice dinner with our Friends on 4/29/2023 and got an unexpected charge added to our bill for 3.99% the waiter said it's a new fee for all checks and it doesn't matter if you pay cash or use a credit card. They have a sign out front saying it's due to supply chain costs. Clearly if your costs are higher you raise the menu prices which CHOP has also done. CHOP has always been a solid choice for a nice dinner in Sister Bay, however this fee is disconcerting and making us rethink our next visit. read more

Beautiful and lovely location with the outdoor seating truly the highlight. My husband and I both had the filet - my husband did the add in of shrimp which he did not get until we were done eating. We brought it to our waitresses attention 2 times once when the food was brought and again when she checked on us. She never came back to see if we received. We then stopped the water pouring person who must have told her. The waitress then came over and said she had checked with the manager and apologized. We finally received it when we were both done eating our entrees. Never checking on how our food was. Had they noticed both my husband and I had large portions of our filets that were all grizzle. Not certain if the cut of meat was truly a filet. If it was it was a poor cut. The cook was good with what they were dealing with for the cut. They had a few opportunities to make things right and did not. Perhaps they are working through their newness but with that brings opportunity and how they work through their growing pains. Hopeful they will get better as their foundation of the location is wonderful. read more

Honestly, it was the terrible service and vengeful staff that ruined our dinner which is what earns this 1-star review. My husband called ahead to grab a table on the rooftop deck and when we arrived, we were told by the hostess that the staff never received our call. It's one thing to run out of seats, but it's another thing entirely to accuse guests of lying. Terrible start to the evening, but we did wind up being seated at a large outdoor table. Unfortunately, because we were a couple, the staff kept trying to rush us out from dinner service because we were not the size of group typically seated at a table for five. Instead, they asked us to take our dessert in a doggie bag. The dinner was equally disappointing; the food was fine (sides were very small but steak was generally tender though overcooked), though the topping was not the sauce we expected (it was compounded butter). When we asked the waitstaff about this, we were scolded for misunderstanding the dish (being scolded by waitstaff was a first for us). When the waitress who scolded us requested we simply take our dessert (ice cream) to go so we could release our seats to other diners (we had dined for a total of 45 minutes, which was when we were told we'd overstayed our welcome), my husband asked for the check from exasperation and decided not to tip the staff. Note, we ALWAYS tip - and indeed, I felt a little bad despite having experienced the worst service we'd ever had. However, this wound up being well-deserved - at the end of our meal (we never got the dessert we paid for by this point) I rose to use the restroom, stopping only to ask a waitress where the restroom was located and to inquire about the dessert (we had booked a boat cruise and needed to leave, had already waited 30 mins by this point, which was roughly 40% of our total time spent in the restaurant), the waitress asked me where we were seated so that she could send it. I told her, to which she replied that since I had not tipped (note, my husband was paying for our meal and made this decision), I was not welcome back at the restaurant and was subsequently publicly berated for not tipping staff. There was, of course, no interest at all in the reasons we were so disappointed that we felt we could not tip in the first place. At this point there was nothing to do but turn around and leave, meal unfinished. If nothing else, the waitress I spoke with had completely justified my husband's rationale for not tipping, ironically. There was indoor seating but they would not let us use it. They promised a seat on the upper deck with an adjustable umbrella to block the sun. No umbrella. I ordered the 12 oz NY Strip and my partner ordered the Pork Chop - both were fantastic. The steak was cooked to my liking and had great texture, the mashed potatoes and pickled red onions were a fantastic pairing! The pork chop had apple and pecans with it and greatly complimented the pork chop. I generally don't like pork but I enjoyed having some of the pork chop. We just finished eating at Chop in Sister Bay, Wisconsin (Door County). It was one of the worst experiences that I've had eating. We started with shrimp cocktail and steak tartare. The shrimp were large but tasted like they were undercooked before chilling and had little flavor. The presentation was also simplistic. The steak tartare was far worse. I've had steak tartare at over 100 restaurants. This was, by far, the worst steak tartare I've ever had. It looked like they took a hamburger patty and simply placed it on a plate. It had no flavor, it was difficult to cut, and it came with only capers and brown onions. The salads and my lobster bisque soup were better by comparison, but not good. Basic and boring. The worst course, however, was the steak. This is a steak restaurant but they have the worst NY strip I've ever had. Mr. Steak in the 1970's or Ponderosa in the 70's and 80's was far better. I ordered my steak Medium Rare. When I cut into the steak, all 3 slices I cut were over done - medium to medium-well in spots. I sent it back. After sending it back, the waiter returned and said the chef looked at it, and it was cooked to temperature and some places were rare. True. It was inconsistently cooked. They actually brought the steak back to me. I've never had that happen in my life. Never. I ate it because I didn't want to wait, at that point, for a new steak or have the chef do something to the steak if I sent it back again. The only things worse about the steak than the temperature were the lack of tenderness and lack of flavor. I ordered a 16 ounce steak but didn't eat more than half of it because it was that bad. When the waiter came to check at the end, I told him I was done, and he asked if I wanted to take it home. I declined. The worst part of the experience was that the manager never came to my table to apologize or do anything to make it right. Not once. Our waiter was a nice guy and offered to buy us a dessert. We declined. We didn't want to sample any more of their food. The waiter also brought us some extra popovers at the end, which were the only enjoyable food items we had at Chop. In the end, the waiter took off $13.00 (on a $55.00) steak. Just horrible management! We learned that the same owner also owns Lure in Sister Bay, where we ate 2 days ago. The food at Lure was significantly better, though at both restaurants they charge a 3% fee for using credit cards. Who doesn't use a credit card for a $200-$300 meal? Either build it into the price of the food or eat the fee yourself with those prices and margins. That's called being cheap or greedy. The bottom line is that Chop is a below-average restaurant with even worse management, and inflated prices! read more

A high end steak house on the main drag in sister bay. I was really impressed by this place given the small town-it could easily fit into the dining scene in a bigger city like Chicago or Minneapolis. We sat upstairs which was fantastic because it was clear they were really taking COVID precautions with very well spaced tables. As a result it had a quieter, more elegant vibe than the bustling downstairs. Our table for two by a window felt special and private. As for the food--this is a steakhouse so you are going to want to go all in on the beef (although there are some other things on the menu too). We both had filets and they offered 3 sizes 6, 8 or 10 oz. which was unexpected but great. The meal comes with soup or salad (Cesar or house) and a potato. Popovers were also served shortly after we sat down but unfortunately they were a bit disappointing-not hot, fresh and crispy, but that was the only thing even slightly off. Our server Dorian did an excellent job taking care of us despite having a lot of tables. Anyway, back to the food. It's always a good sign when the free salad is made with care and not just phoned in. Both the Cesar and the superb house salad were clearly crafted with care and plenty of thought by the chefs. As for the steaks-they were very high quality pieces of meat and cooked to perfection. I often ask for "medium+" as so many fine steak houses seem to under cook-not here -both my wife's medium and my plus (slight pink interior) were cooked to the precise temperature that they should be cooked to. Excellent work in the kitchen. Even though we were full I had to have the house made carrot cake which was among the best iterations of the iconic dessert I've had anywhere. It had a great amount of spicy cinnamon and a super light cream cheese fronting that melted in your mouth-fantastic. They've also got a decent (for a small town spot) wine list with even a Barolo and a Brunello on the menu. The prices weren't bad for wine and even the steaks at $32-48 were priced quite favorably compared to big-city steak houses of similar quality. A lot of opinions coming up, but overall this place was meh.. good. It's priced to be a superior steakhouse, but the execution falls flat on many places. I had the mule for my drink, very good, the cherry vodka and whole drink was great. The bread is also quite good, you'll have to pay if you want any extra (a bit eye roll worthy, considering you're about to drop $100+, but fine) For an appetizer, we got the scallops. These were cooked well! The bacon jam is a bit overwhelming, you could trick anyone into eating these and they wouldn't know it's scallops. Still good. The house salad was yummy and my fiancé enjoyed his potato soup. I ordered the Surf n Turf, with the steak being medium rare. It came out very medium well. Which is not acceptable for a steakhouse charging $35-50 for a steak. Yikes. The lobster was a bit chewy, but decent. The twice baked potato was lovely. My fiancé got the 12 oz ribeye, it wasn't cooked correctly either and there were about 6 oz of fat on it. Once again, yikes. Our waitress was very nice, no complaints there. Because it was early, the hostess said she would give me a table, but it had an hour time limit to accommodate the customer who actually booked the table. I was delighted and accepted. But I am giving it four stars mainly for a taste preference. We came here nine years ago, and I had a horrible meal. I got the crab legs (that are no longer on the menu) but they were horrible because they covered them in paprika and seasoned salt. There is no reason to put anything on top of seafood! Seafood is so good, it does not need a spice added to the top of it. Therefore, every time we have come back to Door County, we have decided to skip Chop and go elsewhere. Fast forward, my mom and my stepdad came here a couple weeks ago and said the food was excellent and to give it another try, so we did. They weren't wrong! Like I said above the steaks were excellent! But we got the shrimp cocktail for the appetizer, and yet again! (Although not covered) they had seasoned salt on top of them. Nooooo!!! They were beautiful jumbo shrimp paired with a delicious cocktail sauce, no need for spice! Seafood can stand alone, it doesn't need a garnish for color! We came here for our anniversary dinner and it was a really pleasant experience. The ambience is very upscale and we would love to come back and enjoy their outdoor patio. We ordered from their early dining menu (5-5:30pm) and the price point is an amazing deal. For drinks, we enjoyed two cocktails - a Chop old fashioned and the grey quarter. Both were delicious and very well made drink. I ordered a Caesar salad, New York strip, and key lime pie. My fiancé ordered the potstickers, crab cakes, and carrot cake. My steak was cooked perfectly and I loved the compound butter on top. They provide complimentary popovers with butter to start and this might've been our favorite part. They were so puffy and flavorful! We asked for seconds, but our server said no. Overall, service was average but not at the level I was expecting for a high-end restaurant. He was hard to communicate with and wasn't very friendly. For example, we questioned him if the wild rice with the crab cakes was supposed to be very crunchy (to the point of being unpleasantly hard/undercooked) and he didn't have any understanding or consideration for our concerns. I had high expectations given the price and reputation, but was ultimately disappointed by my experience. On the plus side, service was quick, wine was great and the carrot cake was delicious. However, the rest of the food was only mediocre. I don't eat red meat very often, only on special occasions, so when I do get red meat I want to make sure I will thoroughly enjoy. We ordered the Ribeye with Truffle Butter and the soup of the day: Asparagus Soup. The soup was a little watery, not creamy enough for my taste. It didn't have much flavor other than the asparagus. The Ribeye was the most disappointing part of the meal. It was chewy. Although the truffle butter on top was very delicious, the meat itself wasn't as tender and juicy as I would have hoped. We also ordered the Fresh Catch which was a local white fish with a lemon sauce, nuts on top and the Seasonal Salad as a side. The Seasonal Salad was spectacular. The dressing was amazing and it had cherries in it that were superb. The fish on the other hand was just okay. It was a white fish, which doesn't have much flavor as is, the sauce helped, but it was still just okay. Finally, we got the Carrot Cake for dessert. It was incredible. It had great texture and the frosting was devine. In addition to our food we got a glass of Chop's house red wine. It was smooth and creamy and it paired well with our meal. We selected meals from their early dinner menu and were given a choice of three courses: soup or salad, your main entrée, and a dessert. We had their chopped house salad, beef tenderloin and Keylime pie and carrot cake for dessert. Our entire meal was delicious from beginning to end. Service was excellent. They were well staffed and we were well attended to for anything we needed. The price is very reasonable for the dinner that they serve.
