My husband and I went to Door County for a weekend getaway on 11/16-11/18. We decided to try CHOP b/c I had seen a few good reviews for it. There were a couple of not so great reviews as well, but mostly they focused on that they felt "rushed" to eat and get out of there. Boy was I glad I didn't listen to those! CHOP was AMAZING! I would highly recommend reservations. We had some for 7:30 and we sat down immediately. The place is a bit smaller, so I could see if they were packed, how it might feel rushed, but we didn't feel that way at all. Our waiter was actually one of the owners, and he was very nice and friendly! He stopped to talk to us for a bit after our meal and ask how everything was and where we had heard about CHOP. I told him about the reviews, and he said that if you call for a reservation, and you know that you like to hang around longer and take your time eating, then just let them know that when you make the reservation and they will plan accordingly. He talked about how the people that eat at 5pm like to eat right away and get out, those that eat around 6:30, like to hang around, and sometimes when they have other reservations waiting it can feel a bit rushed. So if you want to hang around and enjoy your meal, they are very accommodating, just let them know! Down to the food: I had the mushroom ravioli with a cream sauce and fresh Alaskan crab meat on top. This was the best mushroom ravioli I've ever had. At first I wasn't sure how the crab meat would taste with it, but it was wonderful; very rich and smooth. It came with a side salad. My husband had the 12oz NY strip with mashed sour cream potatoes and a side salad. His steak was done perfectly (medium rare) and the potatoes were very creamy and flavorful. He got to choose a steak topping; he chose the house, butter with Worcestershire. The steak was so flavorful and juicy. I had a glass of wine and he had 2 beers and our total before tip was only $66! Definitely well worth it. I've had dinners that weren't half as good as that for much more in downtown Milwaukee. The service was excellent and you can really tell they care about the restaurant, as it's a family business. The grandma even makes the popovers they give you at the table! We didn't have any dessert b/c we were too full from eating our entire meals! The atmosphere is modern but quaint. It is a bit small, really no area to wait inside. They do have seating outside, so in the summer that would be nice. There really isn't a "bar" so to speak, it's right in the front when you walk in with 4 stools, but I wouldn't really come to a place like this to sit at a bar anyways. I hadn't considered Chop for breakfast thinking it was just a steakhouse, but when my first choice was closed, the 'Breakfast' banner out front caught the attention of my boyfriend. I so loved the rustic elegance of Chop. The room was comfortable and given that the room was open to the kitchen, surprisingly quiet and no odor. Great menu options with unique preparations. I opted for the Early Bird special (at 9am mind you, which in the sleepy town of Sister Bay, I guess that's suitable). Two eggs over easy, 3-4 strips of thickly sliced bacon, griddle smashed potato, thick toast & cherry jam. Everything was perfect as delicious! The smashed potato had some crisp edges but the "cake" was still moist and flavorful. The thick toast was two slices of ciabatta bread very lightly buttered. I added the cherry jam. Perfect tart/sweet! Coffee was rich in flavor. The hash that my boyfriend ate was tasty. Nice mild flavor. I think he would've preferred a larger portion. Service was good. I really loved this place. Must have sat around after grill. Another friend ordered the Ceasar salad. No fresh romano or parm. No anchovies, no olives, just lettuce, a couple croutons and dressing, nothing special at all. Got to CHOP at 7:15 on a busy Saturday night. The wait was an hour and a half to be seated which was understandable for a Saturday. So, we waited for two seats to open at the bar where we prefer to eat anyway. The bartender was working alone (not her fault) and was as unfriendly as she was busy. We have all been to crazy busy bars where the bartenders are overwhelmed, right? But you're in the people business, at least act cheerful! She was reluctant to answer us when we asked if we could eat at the bar. Understandable, but we were not in a hurry and waited patiently for her to take our drink order. After a short while the bar crowd shrunk and we ordered apps and then split a dinner. As usual, the food was good, although the portions were a bit on the small side. Would probably go back for the food but not in a rush to do so. There are many good places to dine in Door, and not quite as pricey. I hope on our return trip that this bartender will have the day off. read more

Pros: Early bird meal good value for proportions, beautiful view of downtown sister bay from second floor outdoor seating area! Cons: This place was built from scratch and they totally missed the mark on memorable rich in character decor - when I walked in I felt as though I had entered a commercial dining room at an office building - just bland earth tone colors and no modern youthful door county touches like rich beaming or ShipLap or memorable pendant lights, plates, napkins or glassware - just all average with little to no thought given to branding - the back stairway up to the second level outdoor seating area was like a drywall tunnel with fully carpeted stairs and just no character - it makes me sad - that this place is brand new and it doesn't create that intimate feeling in my soul that I want to go back because of the "experience" :( just wish - with the size of the place and the huge presence it has to downtown - that they would have hired a high caliber design firm to make the place bleed character and have a soul:( Plus - my one glass of my favorite Blantons bourbon, neat, was a whopping $18 Other places in town it runs $12:( read more

Originally had gone in to Sister Bay for breakfast at Al Johnson's, however there was an hour and 45 minute wait on a Monday morning. Saw that Chop did breakfast and they were able to take us within 15 minutes. So happy we decided to try them because the food was amazing! I had a beef ramen bowl with veggies, bone broth, and a poached egg. It was so good! My wife had the Chop breakfast, with eggs, bacon, and potatoes. My son, who at 9 fancies himself a biscuits and gravy connoisseur had theirs with a fried egg and raved how good it was. My father had the country fried steak with eggs and thought it was great. My mother had the bacon fried rice which was something I had not seen before. It had bacon, egg, and veggies with fried rice that she said was very good. My 4 year old daughter had the Dutch apple pancakes which was huge and she said loved that it had powdered sugar on it. Staff was great! We sat outside on the lower level. We will definitely be back and make this our main breakfast destination for Sister Bay. read more

A singularly disappointing service. Food is good, service was terrible, on the verge of discrimination -- i've been to cheapest restaurants and to Michelin starred, and this was the worst experience. The staff not only did not try to honor our reservation (which was for a special anniversary) or somehow accommodate us, they even lied when trying to argue why they could not do it. We chose CHOP from reviews online for our 21st anniversary dinner and were not disappointed! The restaurant is new, modern and very clean. We were seated on the second floor facing the lake, and it was an amazing view. Jorge was our server, and he was knowledgeable, attentive, and friendly. We had their potstickers for an appetizer, and they were very good. The bread at the table was amazing. My husband's soup (potato bisque) was out of this world, and my Caesar salad was very good. Entrees - for me, lobster and filet, decadent and perfectly made. My husband's scallops and filet were perfect too. I asked Jorge for a smoky cabernet to go along with my filet, and he brought one to die for. We mentioned it was our 21st anniversary, and they gave us a complimentary dessert - flourless chocolate cake. This was our best meal of our trip, and will be a must-go restaurant on any future trip! Simply the best steak I've ever had. I had the fillet with chimichurri butter and it was amazing! Not only was the cut of meat perfect, but the seasoning was great too. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone in the area. Make sure to get reservations, because it is a really small (but quaint!) dining room. We went there for my sister's 40th birthday celebration and they were kind enough to special order pistachio gelato for her, because that is her favorite dessert. Service was top notch, starting with the entertaining and energetic hostess and continuing with the exceptional attention offered by our cheery server. The food. Wow, the food! This place isn't easy to find, but it's worth the search! Entrees come with a salad, and the lightly dressed greens with strawberries and blue cheese were a fabulous start. We both had the pork chop with maple apples and pecans served over delicious mashed potatoes. The pork was done beautifully: cooked, but tender and juicy. The topping is sweet, but not too sweet and complements the pork. We didn't have room for dessert, but opted to take a slice of carrot cake to go and shared it back in our hotel room. The cake is luscious and rich without being overly sweet. For the quality of the food, prices seem reasonable. First time dining here, and we were extremely impressed. Small restaurant area (call for reservations or use OpenTable). We arrived at opening time (5pm) on a Friday night in late October, and the place quickly filled up. It would've been nice to have been seated by the windows for a little privacy, but the noise of the people next to you gets swallowed up quickly with all the sounds coming from everywhere. You get used to it. Food was outstanding. My wife took advantage of the early dining special, and got a salad, New York strip, and a sea salt caramel sundae for $19.95. I had the rack of lamb with red skin mashed potatoes, which was great. Good crime brûlée and their Chop house red wine is very nice. The whole dinner cost under $75, which was amazing for the quality of food we were served. Oh! Each table gets these nice popovers with sweetened butter at the start, which are just heavenly. While we love Chop (been there many times), it has not met our expectations the last few times. In the past we would have said that Chop is as good or better than any steakhouse in Milwaukee or Chicago. This last visit the steaks were over cooked --- we ordered medium and there was no pink to be found. We ordered the Surf and Turf and the New York strip. The visit before we had 6 people and most ordered medium and the steaks were raw ---bloody and totally red. Highly recommend the mussels and the ice cream dessert. We are from the twin cities and decided to vacay up here in Door Co. We found this restaurant just by walking downtown and when we first saw it, it was packed which drew us in! The food was exceptional. If you go there you have to try the French onion soup that they have because I guarantee it will be the best French onion soup you will ever taste. We are both allergic to gluten and although we didn't look up the restaurant to make sure it had gf food, they made sure to tell us that they can make nearly everything on the menu gf. If you go there and say your gluten free make sure to talk to the owner because she loves to hear that people with allergies are able to find something on the menu because they work hard at accommodating all allergies and obstructions people have. Overall, we have traveled across the world only to find that one of the best restaurants we have been to is right in the wonderful state of Wisconsin.
