I pretty much always eat here. Their Vietnamese food is very good and reminds me of home. I get the Pork Rice Dish "Vietnamese Style," their pho (any of them), and their Banh Mi Dac Biet (which means special combination in Vietnamese). The butter and pate in the Banh Mi Dac Biet was so good. On top of that, the cost is okay for Florida. It's not as cheap as Vietnamese food in Southern California, but it feeds the craving. The service is hit or miss depending on which waiter/waitress you get, but overall they are good. The location of the restaurant is amazing and overlooks Bivens Arm. This is by far my favorite Asian cuisine restaurant in Gainesville. The food is fantastic, as is the view. It overlooks a beautiful lake and when the Florida weather is just right, I head straight to their outside patio. I only eat vegetarian sushi so I can't comment on the rolls with meat, but the vegetable roll was delicious. I've tried multiple hot noodle bowl dishes as well which were great tasting. The food is far from authentic, but it is OK. What I cannot stand is the service. With half of their tables empty, I still waited for more than 15min before I went to the cashier to grab my bill. The attitude of the person at the cashier was rude, and said he was busy, and it was my waiter's fault not to bring my bill to me. The manager was also unreasonable. A Long Inconsiderate Wait for Food, The wait at this restaurant is simply ridiculous. 15 mins before the waiter came and talked to us, 50 mins for appetizer and drinks, and another 1 hour of waiting for the main entrees. I've been agonizing going back and forth between 3 and 4 stars. I'm afraid I will have to settle on three. I have been eating at Chop Stix for years and I keep going back because the General Tao's Tofu is AMAZING! The owners and servers are AMAZING! The lake view is AMAZING! The gigantic fish in the fish tank are AMAZING! (Please imagine Oprah saying "aaamaaaaziiing!') What's not so amazing is the new re-model and addition of yet ANOTHER fro-yo stand in Gainesville. When I saw them starting the re-model a while back, I was excited thinking they were expanding their seating. Chop Stix is so popular that even though it's way down in the boonies of SW 13th street, you can wait over an hour for a table on a busy night. Surely expanded seating would alleviate this problem and really add to the overall pleasant ambiance of the restaurant. Alas, I was mistaken. The restaurant feels more tightly packed than ever before and the feel of casual dining is ruined by the harsh lighting and imposing "modern" decor of the new WhiteBerry. I completely understand the reasoning behind adding the WhiteBerry stand and am sure it was a huge investment for the owners. But when it first opened, I got the feeling the WhiteBerry wasn't going over as well as they had hoped. And the desperation showed when the genuinely lovely servers tried to guilt you into going in after your meal and giving it a try. I gave in. I tried their one vegan option and it was nice and refreshing. But I didn't want it. Somehow, I managed to weasel my way out of an awkward situation that felt a lot like someone trying to convince you to buy that timeshare in Boca Raton that they know you really, really need. A few friends of mine and I once ventured back in there, only because the wait for a table was very long and there was no where else to sit. We didn't want to be jerks just occupying space, so one of my friends purchased their plain yogurt. She couldn't eat it. It was literally plain yogurt - in all its sour, unsweetened glory, served iced. Aside from the frozen yogurt department at Chop Stix, the actual food department is quite good. Some of their dishes can be hit or miss, especially if they are very busy, but the General Tso's tofu and Sweetheart Roll have never done me wrong. The Thai House Salad is absolutely delicious but mine was served in a very small bowl and it was a battle between me and table to see who got the most salad. The food and service at Chop Stix is deserving of 4 stars but it's the imposing yogurt stand that drags it down to 3. Oh, old Chop Stix, I miss you. read more

I brought it to her attention and there was absolutely no argument, instead she said "I guess you get a free roll." That is exactly how that kind of situation should be handled. I came here for lunch on a beautiful day and sat outside overlooking a pretty lake. The food wasn't the greatest, with random pieces of squid making their way into my chicken and rice dish. My only complaint is the noise...it gets very loud when the dining room is full. My boyfriend and I spent our one year anniversary here and it was an amazing experience! I ordered the Spicy Duck Noodle Soup, which is basically ramen, and I received a gigantic portion. It's not too spicy and the duck is extremely tender and the skin was extra crispy (perfect). Our server said they marinate it for 24 hours and then roast it for a few hours. I also had some nigiri pieces. I tried conch for the first time and I was not a fan but the tuna and yellowtail were extremely satisfying! Chop Stix was my favorite place in Gainsville back when I was in college. 6 years later, i was in town and decided to come back. I was surprised by the renovation. Everything looked new. Once we sat, we ended up with the same waiter I always had years ago. I ordered the Pad Thai and my bro ordered the beef teriyaki bento box. As usual, the service was way too slow (15 mins for water and sake) and sadly the food was no where near as good as i remember. Excellent asian fusion, good selection, ideal setting on a lake. The pho is great. I usually have either the pad Thai, pho, or a variety of sushi. It's fun to sit outside as the sun sets and you can see alligators swimming in the lake. The prices are reasonable as well. They do take out. My one complaint is the service. I rarely have good or friendly service, which is why I sometimes choose other asian fusion places to go to with friends or family members who don't like bad service. Very disappointed. Hadn't been here in about 3 years. Service was atrocious. Food was OK, but my mood colored my lack of enjoyment. They got our appetizer order wrong; OK, things happen. But the egg rolls we ordered were cold, and the spring rolls didn't come out until 15 minutes later. We were 5 people, and two entrees were served about 10 minutes before the other three orders, which arrived cold! Probably had been sitting there waiting for someone to bring them out. When our first set of appetizers were brought, no small plates were delivered and those took another 5 minutes to arrive. One of us started using a napkin for a plate because we were hungry! All in all, I'm not sure I'll go back. Too many other choices in Gainesville. FYI: when I complained to the two people at the front desk on our way out, all I heard was "we're very sorry." MMM mmm good. I drove by this place the other day and decided to try it out for dinner. I'm glad I did. I have been craving a good Thai Masaman Curry and this place hit the spot. I have had the same dish at pricier places in Miami and the Chop Stix version was just as, if not more, delicious.
