This place has become our go-to spot for the Kabuli Pulao dish. I've tried a few restaurants in the area, but this one stands out. Their Kabuli Pulao is not overly oily, and the rice is always perfectly moist, which I really appreciate. My only suggestion would be to offer an extra rice option, as the portion can sometimes feel a bit small--you might need to order two servings to have enough. I haven't dined in person yet and have only ordered takeout, but everything I've tried has been delicious. Aside from the Kabuli Pulao, I've ordered their bolani as well as their kebabs. As of this week, Chopan Kabob's website says they open at 11AM on a Sunday, and we planned on ordering food around then to bring back around Noon / 12:30PM. Their online ordering did not work, so we called them shortly after 11AM. Automatically to VM. Tried again, and someone answered and said they opened at Noon. They say if we order on the phone, it'll take 30 mins, but if we order in person, it'll take 15. We drive there, and there was a big sign in the lot saying their hours started at 11AM. Please update that you open at Noon! Anyways, we order and then they tell us it'll take around 30 mins. We go get some boba and come back, and our food was closer to a 40 minute wait. Frustrating, but it was what it was. Anyways, we got the following - Mantu - steamed dumplings filled with ground beef, onion and herbs, with meat sauce and garlic yogurt sauce. YUM!! A must get at Afghan places. I absolutely love mantu. There were 8 in there and I ate all of them. There was a nice minty flavor to them as well. So good. Fish Filet - fried fish fillet seasoned with our special blend of herbs and spices. served with rice, naan, and a garden salad. One of our guests had this and she thought it was pretty good! The bread/naan was a bit rough though. Beef Tikka Kabob - a skewer of freshly grilled chunks of beef tenderloin seasoned in out blend of special spices. served with rice, naan, and a garden salad. The husband got this one and he finished the whole thing. He usually doesn't with dishes like this so he thought the portion was on the smaller side. The rice was also rather bland in his opinion. The beef was good though. Chicken Kabob - a skewer of freshly grilled chicken seasoned in our house blend of spices. served with rice, naan, and garden salad. For the kids, of course! They split this plate and they enjoyed it all other than some of the rice. Kado Borani - fried butternut pumpkin cooked in our special house made masala sauce. topped with yogurt and served with rice, naan, and garden salad. I got ripped off here; this did not come with the rice and garden salad. It came with the bread, so they probably gave me the side (Borani Kadoo in their menu), but I got charged the $2 more. The butternut pumpkin was very tender and delicious with the yogurt on top. I wished there was more since there didn't seem much in there. Yum. This plus all the mantu (plus my boba drink elsewhere) filled me up during lunch. Lamb Karahi - chunks of lamb cooked in a spicy karahi sauce. served with rice, naan, and a garden salad. Background What a feast this was. I haven't had Afghan food since 2019 so I've been craving. I went here when it was closing a few days prior. I was disappointed that we couldn't eat there because they only serve buffet at night. We were coming near the top of the hour (8:50p) even though on the phone the person said he'll stay open 10 minutes passed. They close at 9p these days. He wasn't as nice when we were there, but can't blame him as I came so late. It wasn't meant to be then, but glad we came back. The family feast hit the spot on all levels. Plenty of meat, rice and bread. The salad was a little too light portion wise, but I won't be going to Afghanistan for vegetables. I'm sure we could've asked for more. The man working seems a lot more welcoming. We were the only ones dining inside on a Saturday lunch. A few people chose to dine outdoor in the back. We actually didn't know they had this option as I thought we had the whole restaurant to ourselves. The Food Highlights of the family meal include the nicely seasoned beef chaplee, beef teka, and lamb sausage looking meat. Lowlight is the lamb karahi as I find it not gamey enough for my liking. I guess that means their lamb chunks are very fresh (less gaminess when food is fresh), but I seek for the gamey flavor of the lamb. I wasn't a fan of the tandoori chicken, but it was well prepared. It's just not my preference. My friend loved the eggplant appetizer dish a lot. So does my wife so it's certainly a winner although I'm just ok with it. We added 2 skewers of beef kebab to basically try their entire menu. They were good as well. We will be coming back to try their dinner buffet. It's $17 and they rotate the meat dishes with 2 kinds of meat. We will be coming there when they serve chaplee or any of the beef dishes. Absolutely the most unprofessional restaurant establishment I have experienced in my life. Let me tell you why.. My family and I love flavorful Afghan cuisine. We decided to order dinner here via their website. When I arrived to pick up and pay for my food order I was greeted by a woman who was annoyed with a male cook/worker who also greeted me. The woman worker told the other worker to go back in the back and let her take her of customer's. She rang up our order and informed me that the kabob plates we ordered was only meat plates. I had to show her the menu that the kabob plates we ordered came with salad, rice and naan she continued to disagree with me. After going back and forth with her regarding the menu and what's stated on their own website she finally agreed to the full meal. The male cook/worker came out again to offer assistance with our conversation and she lost it again on him. I was so uncomfortable I wanted to walk out. No one deserves to get spoken down to the way the woman talked. No one should have to explain the menu to the worker as well. We will never be back. We had dinner here last night and let me tell you, it was amazing. We reserved a table for 8 ppl and it was nicely set up and ready when I arrived 10 mins early. The restaurant is clean, the staff is super friendly and the food is 10 out of 10. We ordered everything from the menu and not a single dish did disappoint. The Bolani are mouth watering, the kabobs, every single one is super tasty, the tandoori fish was to die for. The qabuli is yummy, the Baklava for dessert was juicy and delicious. I really enjoy Afghan food and had this place bookmarked for awhile so when buddy George F suggested we meet up at this location I was happy to indulge. The place notes outdoor seating but I imagined a couple of tables placed at the entrance of this strip mall restaurant...Pleasantly surprised they had a spacious patio with heat lamps, and plenty of spaced out tables in the back. Nice! Plenty of appetizer options like mantu and aushak (Afghan dumplings), bolani (stuffed flatbread), and kebabs. Ordered the bonjan borani which is eggplant, tomato and yogurt served with flatbread which was flavorful with a nice texture...then it was onto the 2 meat combo of shami (ground beef) kebab and chicken...the chicken was juicy and nicely seasoned...the shami kebab was good but probably try other meat options next time. I usually love an Afghan cilantro and jalapeño chutney but unfortunately, their version was a little too vinegary and tangy for me. Overall, 3.5 - 4 stars and good first visit and would definitely return to try other items. The comfortable outdoor seating and friendly staff made this 4 stars. read more

I saw the recent ROTD from fellow elite Frances L. on Chopan Kabob. Khyber Pass is probably our all-time favorite, although Chopan is closer to us and is available via Doordash. Their menu has several build-your own combos and seemed to have a reasonable price point. I ordered the Tandoori Fish, which turned out to be four pieces of fish steak prepared Tandoori style. The meat was still soft and well-seasoned. Big fan of this dish and I only wished the pieces were bigger! Similar in quality to Oakland's excellent Biryani Kabob. For the wife, I got the three-meat combo. Beef tenderloin was good, as was the koobideh. The chicken unfortunately was on the dry side. Given delivery times and the tendency for white meat to dry out, its really hard to keep the chicken kabobs moist. Still, decent place for lunch. 4 stars. read more

I'm little disappointed with Chopan Kabob. Our order was placed at 3pm for a 7:30 pickup and the food wasn't given to us until 45 minutes later at 8:15pm. It's strange just how behind they were since it was very empty all day!! The food was okay! I really liked the chaplee, but the other items (chicken kabob, mantoo, bolani) were just okay compared to other Afghan restaurants. Maybe the quality went down in the shuffle of things! Oh well. This mantu was the best version yet. Tried mantu at other restaurants where the lentils weren't sufficiently rinsed which made the sauce gritty. No grit in this dish. I've also had mantu where the dumplings were overcooked and soggy. No problems with Chopan Kabob's mantu. The dumplings were cooked perfectly, just past al dente: tender but still firm with some chew. Other items on the menu are hit or miss. The baklava was yummy and the bolani was OK. The lamb kabob was over marinated. Lamb is naturally tender. Marinating lamb meat is for flavor, not to tenderize. Too long in the marinade breaks down the fibers making for an oddly mushy texture. I'll continue exploring the menu. Hopefully I'll discover more gems. read more

Came here on a Friday night for my birthday dinner with family. The mantu was absolutely delicious! The only thing is that it arrived at the same time as our entrees. That's the reason for 4 stars. However we didn't have any left over to take home as we enjoyed it that much. Hubs had the beef chaplee and I found it very tasty. Great spice level and crispness. The rest of us had the lamb palow. We have had it before and found it to be just as good this time too. When they found out it was a birthday dinner they put a happy birthday on the music loop. This place is consistently great food at a reasonable price. Covid gave everyone a reason to hike up prices and then reduce the quantity and quality of food they serve but this place stayed reasonably priced with ample serving. You can still actually get full eating here for the money you pay. There is another place that charges $2.49 for rice and gives you like 5 tablespoons (exaggeration)but it is literally disappointing and they used to give you whole well grilled tomato now they give you half or sometimes whole of half-a**ed prepared lunch plate. Do not eat there (not naming place-but they charge for rice not even enough for 1person!!!)but eat at Chopan Kebob instead. We ordered the the following: Beef Shami ground beef kabob $11 two skewers good flavor, a bit on the dry side. Lamb Kabobs side order 1 skewer $8 great flavor, some pieces had grissle. Chicken Kabobs $10 best dish tender juicy chicken kabobs the meals comes with generous portions of rice. I was lead here by my love of Afghan food and the five star Yelp reviews. Chopan Kabob took over the space that used to be occupied by Shiraz. They've remodeled and the restaurant is bright, welcoming and nicely decorated. We were welcomed and promptly seated by Faro. She was very friendly and recommended some favorites. We decided on the Family Special after seeing a family enjoying it. We also ordered the Mantu and Bolani. The Family Special is a great deal and the perfect way to try a selection of different meats. Four different meats-lamb seekh kebob, beef teka kebob, tandoori chicken legs and chapli kebobs were served on a cast iron skillet with onions and jalapeños. It came with basmati rice, salad, dall, and homemade naan. DELICIOUS!! My favorites were the tender, juicy chicken and the spicy, well seasoned lamb. I think the dall was a lentil stew. It was really good with the bread and rice. The Mantu was a delicious appetizer. The steamed, savory meat filled dumplings were topped with both a meat sauce and a yogurt sauce. We saw another table order the bolani and it looked so good that we had to try it too. We ordered half potato and half leek. The bolani was served with a fragrant yogurt sauce. We ordered the kabli paluo and chapli kabab and bolani. Kabli paluo is excellent with the tender- fall off the bone lamb leg and the rasins and carrots on top of fluffy flavourful rice. Bolani with potatoe is my favorite! The potatoe filling is spiced just right. The only thing I was disappointed with was the Chapli kabab. Previously it was extremely thin- I understand Chapli kebab is suppose to be thin but not to the point that it's crispy and broken with patches because it can't hold its shape when cooking. This time, though they were the right thickness they were way too small! Like hamburger patties. For the price- this is ridiculous. I was like is this a joke or they were running out of meat so they purposely are making them smaller? There has to be a standard that's kept at all times. Beef so tender and flavorful I was amazed. I needed a quick lunch I could take with me. I was working a job just .7 miles away and didn't want to get fast food, but I didn't have a lot of time to wait. I ordered steak kabobs and ground beef kabobs. Hidden little gem in San Ramon. Across the street from Lucky's next to Chevron gas station. Parking was not too bad in the little strip mall. Outdoor dining in the back. The restaurant is right off of 680 freeway exit for Alcosta Blvd. Looks like a family run restaurant. The younger son was our waiter and he was a very gracious host. Food was good. Worst customer service I may have EVER encountered. Is it a thing for restaurants to scoff at customers who walk in at 8:18pm on a Monday when the restaurant closes at 9pm? The older bald gentleman working on 21JUN21 at 8:18pm had HORRIBLE service. He greeted me and my family with a scoff and clearly had an issue with us. I asked him if there was an issue and he said yeah, we close at 9. I looked at my watch and said yes, it's 8:18pm, is that a problem? And then he was very frustrated and said "just have a seat." We then watched him continually shake his head in disapproval near the kitchen and then I figured our food would turn out horrible. Keep in mind this was after going to the Concord location and being told they don't serve Qabuli pallow because their kitchen size, which I don't understand. The service in Concord was great though and they phoned San Ramon and confirmed they had pallow. I will never visit this location again and may never return to the Concord location. Aren't restaurants wanting customers these days because of COVID? Terrible! Save your time and money and go somewhere else. read more

We were very excited to be there first customers. We started out wanting to try someplace different for lunch and just walked in. The owner was very gracious. He greeted us warmly. We decided to try a couple of different things which we split. We were presented with two bottles of water. Then came the bread with a yogurt sauce. The sauce was wonderful. We decided on BANJAN BORANI and the chicken chaplee. Both were very tasty. The borani was eggplant which we both like. The chicken chaplee was ground chicken mixed with onions and spices made into a patty. It was served with rice and salad. The owner told us that they have not been approved to sell tandoori yet by the health department. Since we weren't looking at the tandoori items, I didn't disappoint us.
