I find it interesting that a lot of reviewers complain about the "chop't" part of going to Chop't. That's their hook - that they will combine your ingredients and chop your salad into itty bitty pieces. I think, though, if you didn't want them to do that, you could just say so. I personally like the chop't-ness of the salads, though I also think some ingredients should be mixed into the salad post-chop instead of pre-chop, as making them into tiny bits isn't always desierable (like with avocado for instance. My complaint isn't the price - which I find to be generally comparable to Cosi. My complaint is that the quality of your salad really depends on who is making it - they don't seem to have a standard. I feel like, for the $ that I am paying, I should get a decent portion of the various ingredients I choose for my salad (I always do make-my-own). Some of the servers give you generous portions, some don't. But I'm also not shy about asking for more of something if I didn't like the amount they put in. Also, some of the people on the salad mixing line do a better job than others, though the woman who chopped my salad today didn't understand English, so when I asked her if I could sample a certain dressing I hadn't tried (you can, by the way) she got really confused, and had to ask someone for help. Overall, I love the concept of this place, and I'm willing to pay a premium for premium ingredients and a custom mixed salad. As someone mentioned, the salads are huge enough for sharing - I ordered one delivery once, and put the salad part in my own bowl, mixing in the dressing as I ate. I filled the standard-sized bowl 3 times and there were still greens left! Lots of salad. But the number of calories in the salad depend on what you throw in it. Very straightforward value proposition: health conscious fast food focusing on salads and soup. Expect to spend at minimum $10 for one salad. Due to the dressings the calorie count can swing pretty big but you can stay on the healthy side. Really enjoy getting the salad to go and sitting on the steps of the national portrait gallery while eating on nice days. Well, when a new place pops up in your work 'hood offering the possbility of a somewhat healthy lunch, you gotta check it out. And, in this case, make sure you have enough available credit on your AmEx. Chop't makes average salads for above average prices. Layer on top of that the crowds who were also checking the place out after it opened, and it's not the best experience. Don't get me wrong, the salads are ok (except for the one that had a little piece of wire mesh in it), but for the price, you can do much better. If you want a drink, good luck getting out of there for less than $11. Oh, and one more thing, I'm pretty sure the salads are not all that healthy - because I'm not hungry again at 3PM. read more

I give this place a solid two stars. I am surprised to see that is more popular than that among Yelpers. I am an avid salad eater so I really did have high hopes for this place. I found the choices limited, the salad dry, the dressing fattening and/or tasteless and the atmosphere bland. Just not a fan of this place at all. I threw my mostly-lettuce salad away after just a few bites. My friend also got a salad and he doesn't use dressing so he was pretty much munching on some lettuce crisps. I can get a better salad at Wendy's, seriously. And I do agree that service is slow. We were third in line and it took forever. I was in DC for a conference for 4 days and ate lunch every day at this place. The service was super fast even though there were very long lines and the salads are delicious. Unlike other salad joints this place gives you tons of lettuce/greens and just the right amount of mix-ins. I had the Southern Harvest salad with goat cheese instead of blue cheese. I tried two different dressings and both were really great. The fact that all of the ingredients are natural and the dressings are homeade helps too. I also loved the fact that they had Boylan's brand soda on tap instead of Coke or Pepsi. I love Boylan's diet black cherry. Even though a salad and a drink cost me a little over $11 I think it was well worth it. One salad is enough for almost the whole day. Wish we had these in Philly. read more

I cannot for the life of me understand why people eat at this chain. Maybe if I were an infant and needed my food to be pureed, or if I didn't want to be able to recognize what I was eating, then Chop't might interest me. Also, it's expensive, the ingredients aren't even that good (Sweet Green is much better), the lettuce to other ingredients ratio is all messed up, and the "cane sugar" soda sucks, when the machine is even functioning. read more

My second experience at this Chop't and I have to say I really love this place. Service was outstanding. Eric, who I believe is the Manager of this location, was overseeing the smooth flow of the line of customers. Very nice guy. All the employees truly seem to enjoy their work as well. So many 'Fast-Casual' restaurants I go to today have employees that look miserable and are so inattentive. The employees here that I have encountered on my two lunch trips were fantastic. The food is so good and fresh. This time I ordered the Po'Boy Wrap. Very good and I still felt healthy afterwards. Chop't is slowly becoming my go-to lunch spot! read more

i think this was one of the most confusing restaurants i've ever been to. it was like being in a foreign country and trying to order food without looking idiotic. methinks they need to cut the menu down by half. options are not always a good thing. seriously, there were like 20 dressings and 5000 different salad options. it made me dizzy. but at $6 for my custom salad (mesclun mix with crumbled egg, fried onions, bellpeppers, and corn w/the asian dressing on the side), i thought it was reasonably priced and tasty. the salad mix itself couldve been a bit fresher though. and remember to tell them to stop chopping before your salad turns into a smoothie (i think there needs to be a better system of telling your salad-chopper to stop chopping...i basically said, PLEASE STOP and felt too aggressive. perhaps there can be yet ANOTHER option added to the menu - the light chop, the medium chop, and the super chop). read more

Fresh fast food. The salads are too big to eat in one sitting, but they also cost more than I like to spend on one meal, so that sort of evens out. The best thing about Chop't isn't the food though; it serves fountain cane-sugar soda!! Mixing the diet black cherry and fully-loaded cream soda is the perfect pick me up around 3 in the afternoon. I am rating JUST this location. I work in Penn Quarter and whenever I have gone here I always try and avoid the 12-1 rush. Despite that the place is always packed beyond belief. But that isn't why I am giving this place 2 stars. I have been to two other Chop'ts, the one in Union Station and the one in Dupont, and neither of them lack the ability to listen to what I order... EVERYTIME I go into this place, the staffseem so overwhelmed, which while there is almost always a line, I have seen it just as bad in Union Station. And everytime I order, they ask if I want this or that and before I can answer they throw it in. This past time, I asked for a wrap twice, and it ended up a salad.. with salt and pepper and jalapenos that I didn't ask for. I suppose this is the one time getting more than you asked for is not a good thing? I get it you are all wanting to get everyone's order but when it comes at the expense of not even listening to what we are ordering, what good does it do? Beyond the messed up orders, the salads here are pretty good (VERY fattening so watch what you order). I have to say, Freshii on E St just opened up in February and I much prefer it to Chop't. Salads at Chop't can come out bland or just have the wrong texture. But when they get it just right, it is like heaven in a recyclable plastic bowl. There was a Chop't right in the bottom of my office building when I lived in New York and I went at least once a week. Great selection, fresh ingredients, fast service. Too bad the Chop't in Chinatown has none of that! The line is out the door and moves at a crawling pace (I know this is not NYC, but come on people, move!). I've tried ordering online and then picking up but the problem with that is that they don't appear to put any thought into pre-orders. My salad had bits of ingredients that I did not order, it had barely any dressing, and it certainly was not "chop't" -- I had a half an avocado that I attempted to cut with my fork and mix in the rest of the salad. The shrimp smelled a little funky and the lettuce was wilted. For $10, there are better lunch offerings in Chinatown. read more

Recommend the Southwest salad or Caesar salad. Chop't also sells a high end salad for people in a hurry who still want to eat in a health conscious manner. Although I make my own salads, I recognize it is hard to keep ingredients nearly as fresh without the throughput that Chop't has. One would need to eat a week's worth of salad to have a fraction of the ingredients that Chop't has. I absolutely love Chop't, so I am pretty disappointed that I had a terrible experience with their delivery service this weekend. A friend and I were going to a Caps game which began at 7. We ordered two salads online at 6 pm, to be delivered to her place at 3rd and H....literally four blocks from Chop't. We knew we were cutting it close and would be a little late for the game, but I would assume when ordering food from so close by, I would at least get it in an hour. NOT THE CASE. We waited...and waited...and waited until 7:45 to call the restaurant. I wish we had called sooner, but we were trying to be understanding. After being put on hold multiple times, we were told that the delivery person was entering our apartment building at that time (hmm what a coincidence...). We told him that at that point, we wouldn't even have time to eat and needed to go to the game, so we canceled our order. The man on the phone was very apologetic and offered us free salads, however no explanation as to how we would obtain them...just walk into Chop't and say "Hi I'm Katie want that free salad a random employee promised me last week?" Without question the best salad business in the Washington, DC area. Friendly staff that are engaged with customers and that clearly want to make your Chop't experience memorable. Absolutely love the Cobb with Crispy Chicken and their Steakhouse and their Pucks Black Cherry Soda. The chopping of the salad and all its ingredients, the unique ingredients (Crispy Chicken, Grilled Shrimp, Crispy Tofu, Steak) and even their large assortment of drink choices is what sets Chop't far apart from that other (Sweetgreen) salad place. I go to Chop't at least 4 times a week and will not buy a salad from any other salad place ever again. Once they chop your salad and you dig in your life will never be the same. Experiment with their dressings, there are so many to choose from and I haven't had a bad one yet and look forward to trying a new one every time. If you're afraid to choose one just ask them what they recommend or, they offer 2 recommended dressing choices for each Classic Salad right on the menu. read more

I'm very happy that chop't has a location in Chinatown. I'm even happier that they started offering a soup and salad combo. You really can't go wrong with a salad from chop't. I do wish their warm salads had chicken that was white meat instead of dark meat, but that is really the only drawback. Of course I wish the price was lower so that I could eat here more often as well. I've been getting the Mexican Chicken soup and it is wonderful. Has a lot of lime and good amount of spice in it. Combo is a bit on the pricier side. I do realize that I could get a similar combo at Panera or Corner Bakery for cheaper, but Chop't salads are so much better and overall the combo is way more satisfying. read more

I LOVE this place. It's awesome. You create your own salad from really fresh ingredients and have it made just for you. There is usually a bit of a line for lunch, but they have lots of employees and seem very organized, so it moves very quickly. It can get pricey depending on what you order, but the starting prices aren't bad at all: $5.99 for the salad and $5.49 for the wrap, which includes 4 toppings. Salads are HUGE and no skimping on the toppings either. (If anything, they go a little overboard with the toppings.) My coworker and I often share a salad, and we both leave full. The only thing negative I could say about the place would be that it needs more seating. But I just can't get enough of this place. read more

App ordering at this place is terrible. I have done it several times for the convenience, but have not once been happy with what I've received. Among the various problems: asked for dressing on the side and none was included (try eating a dry salad some time), salad container not full, ignoring of special requests like extra chopping (in that case it seemed like they hadn't chopped it at all). It's a bit better if you wait in line and watch them make it. I think the manager does the app stuff mostly so he is either hurried or misguidedly trying to save his employer on cost. I liked how they gave out samples of dressing with a little piece of lettuce. I thought they were almost too generous with the toppings, i.e. too much cheese. They didn't charge me for the upsell items and they were inept at making the wrap. The soda fountain was a highlight. Overall, I was overwhelmed with too many choices. I heard good things about chopped but I was disappointed. My favorite salad in the land would be a Greek. Chop't doesn't have a Greek salad but they have one that is similar. To try and make it my dream Greek salad, I had them add the extra ingredients for extra money with chicken. At the end, it did not come together. The dressing the toppings the taste disappointed me. Although I did customize my order, the ingredients I put together are usually collaborated to make a great salad. My friend had the Ceasar which was much better, so I know you could possible get a good salad if you choose correctly. So, I will come here again. read more

AMAZING! This is the best salad experience I've ever had, such a great concept. I got the wrap and I am very happy that I did. I think the wrap is a bit more filling. However, I have gotten the bowl too and it is not bad, but I do get hungry not long after. The veggies are super fresh, I love that they chopped it up very finely and mixed everything together very well. I added shrimp, honey mustard, some egg, corn, avocado, fresh mozarella cheese, and crunchy noodle. I love eating here because it makes me feel like I can eat fast food and be healthy. Not bad! I ventured in here while in DC for a quick dinner and was totally impressed with the concept. It's sort of like a salad twist on Coldstone. You can either order one of their menu items or create your own salad choosing everything from the type of lettuce you want to ingredients and dressing. Once you chose they dump everything onto a cutting board, chop it up, toss it with dressing and put it in a huge bowl to go. While not necessarily the best salad I've ever eaten, it's a great healthy fast food option. There are a ton of yummy, fresh ingredients. So I was disappointed to have an extremely bland salad. I don't typically put salt and pepper on salads, but after being asked if I wanted to and declining, I found that doing that after a few bites back at my table made it edible and provided some amount of taste. I was thinking maybe it was just my salad (lettuce, red onions, corn, avocado, panko fried chicken, white cheddar, and Ranch), but the Monterey salad with sweet and spicey dressing was bland as well. The dressing seemed a little thin, so maybe that was part of the issue. The pita bread was good. Also, when you see people working here who have bits of food all over their face (I'm sure this is a typical job hazard though) do you tell them? Not tell them? Try not to be repulsed thinking those bits are going to fall into your salad?
