One bad apple can ruin the pie. It is with great sadness that I write this review. I really hate giving anything less than a three. I normally wait a few days before writing, it give me some time to think a little more clearly especially after a bad experience! First I would like to say the job market is very competitive these days, when you deal with the public know that your attitude can make or brake the whole experience. If you are having a bad day that can be reflective in the way you deliver service. In today's economy we all need to help each other. I am hungry I pick your place to eat, therefore you get to keep your job that is called economy stimulation, it is called not standing in unemployment line. If you don't like customer service leave the service line, work in the shadows. Ok let's get to the point of my frustration, I loved this place.The experience was good until I tried to pay using a credit card and money. Monique said,"You can only use one type of payment. Not that it should matters, but I had two payment methods because I was paying for two different orders. I work near Union station, so we come to Chop't a lot (we use to). Some times I pick up six salads and pay with more than one method (cash and credit). So when Monique said, "we only except one payment method per transaction (with roll of the eyes)", I was surprised and a little confused. I said,"really I never knew that? We've never been told that." I think the dialogue was a little too much for Mo'Nique to handle because at that point she proceeded to say it again and very loudly. I was about to tell her to keep the salads, but I gave her the card she rang up the transaction and slammed the receipt down. I said have a good day she rolled her eyes again!, and yelled next. I know they move at a very fast pace which I love that's why I go there so much that's why my co-workers go there so much, we can get in and out in a reasonable amount of time. I consider myself a pretty reasonable person and I am extra polite to people ,because I like good serviced. I feel if you treat people nicely then they return it. When Monique slammed the receipt down and yelled next when I was saying have a good day to her, at that point I had had enough! Now mind you Monique I'm sure is a young woman that has not been in the business world that long, and maybe she does not know the importance of politeness when it comes to customer service. I don't think she realizes how competitive the job market is and how companies Pride their selves on customer service. Now mind you ,if a customer is nasty to you I don't think you should take it. If someone has question I think they have the right to ask a question and you as an employee has the right to respond with an answer in a civilized manner. I think if you don't have an answer or if you don't have the training that you should for the task at hand you should always call the manager. Now I don't know if Monique just didn't know how to do the transaction? I don't know if the pace on the serving line is too much for her? Maybe she's new and needs more training. I've never had that type of service at chop't! with so many other places in Union Station to get a salad matter of fact right next door right around the corner from chop't no matter where I go I get good service. If Monique is reading this, I didn't deserve to be treated like you treated me my coworker wanted to get our money back and leave the salads, but I didn't think that was necessary. When I asked her to speak to the manager she pointed to the back so I headed to the back to wait. Mr. Juan. was very nice and seem to be very understanding, and he said that he would talk to her. I asked him was it okay to pay with money and a credit card and he said sure. He said he would talk to her. Normally my salad comes to about $10 this time my salad alone was $14 my co-workers salad was over 10 the total bill came to about $27. Believe me I'm not complaining about the cost but when you pay $14 for a salad you should not be faced with attitude when paying. Now I must say even if I paid $2 for a salad I wouldn't expect attitude especially when I'm just asking a question. If chop't said you can't pay with two different forms of payment that would be fine however that's not what chop't said that is what Monique said. Anyway the salad was wonderful as usual. The woman that took the order the man that tossed the salad and chopped it were nice as usual. The worst part of the experience was when I encountered Monique with the rolling of the eye and the inpatient attitude. It could have been five stars. At least this will not change the overall rating. I just don't like bad service so I figured when I see Monique on the serving line or at the cash register that is, I'll just go next door and get a salad. One Bad Apple can spoil the whole bunch. Today I go there as usual for dinner. Ordered the salad. There was one person seem to be handling the orders. Once I paid I went to the area where they have the napkins, knifes and forks and it was covered with trash bags and some of the trash were sitting on the counter. Pretty disgusting. OMG! yummy yummy yummy absolutely delicious salad at great prices!!! I really like Kale and discovered that I can simply order my own and not adhere to the recommended, pre-made selections on the menu! For a make your own - you can choose a greens of your choice and 4 ("general toppings" like tomatoes, peppers or beets. No meats, avocado or premium toppings) toppings free of charge for only $5.99! What a deal! Chop't changed my expectations for quick healthy salads. Definitely my go to spot for a great salad from now on! :) read more

I love Chop't. They have a great selection and are always really fast. I think that they do a good job handling the lunch crowd and their ingredients are always fresh. I tried online ordering once and I felt like it took longer to get my salad than if I were to wait in line -- probably won't do that again. Great lunch stop. $15 for a salad is a LOT, even in this neighborhood, but it totally worth it! I don't remember the name of the salad I had, but it had spinach, arugula, mixed greens, quinoa, black beans and avacado. I added shrimp and got the sweet and smoky chipotle dressing. That stuff had a kick, but WOW that was a good salad! Don't be intimidated by the ridiculously long line; it moves very quickly, as there is nothing short of an assembly line of people behind the counter tossing and chopping and prepping orders. Plus, there is a sort of concierge that points customers to the next person available to take their order, and points them to their next step in the custom salad process (some move on down the line, while others grab their order and head straight to checkout). I am a big fan of Chop't. This location is no different than my other outstanding experiences at other locations. They are always busy with the lunchtime crowd but they always seem to make great quality salads no matter how busy they are. Always a favorite of mine. I crave salad from here. Now the negative. ..my husband pointed out. It was his 1st time and he was confused and received no direction from the staff. We went around dinner time so it seemed like the eager, energetic, and intelligent staff goes home after the lunch rush which is when I usually go. The service is definitely slower in the evening which you think at Union Station it should always be a rush..ie catching trains and buses. Let me start by saying that I am not normally a salad person. Like, in fact, I detest most salads. But, this summer I interned near Union and my intern friends finally got me to try Chopt. I ordered a Chicken Tinga salad with arugula instead of kale and no cheese. This is now literally one of my favorite meals! It's so good -- mexican chicken, quinoa, black beans, avocado, shallots, and tortilla chips. Yes, it is a bit overpriced but I can always make my salads last for two meals (the portions are generous) so that helps me to justify the cost. This was my first time at Chopt and I enjoyed it overall! I created my own salad which had a variety of yummy options to choose from and it was fairly easy in ordering. My only complaints are that I wasn't aware of the fact that my salad would come up to $13! I wasn't aware that the chicken was $4 extra and I was a little sad that I wasn't offered bread, lol. My mom and I are traveling to DC this week and saw this as a good option for us on the run in between other attractions. Our salads were both great and we would go back with a few tweaks. The line was very long but menus were provided at the beginning of the line so you had time to decide and the line moved quickly. My salad had bleu cheese in that could have been chopped better because I got big chunks of it in my salad which was a bit much for me to handle. I did create my own salad with steak that was delicious and the bleu cheese dressing which was also great. They could use more seating all though there is some seating outside the shop. Overall, it was a great experience, I would go back and I wish they had one in our hometown! read more

Came for an evening visit for dinner and was hit by a strong chemical cleaner smell upon entry. Staff members looked tired and ready to go home. The refrigerated area that displays the different ingredients was messy, with a young lady picking at the bits and pieces that had fallen in the wrong spots. I watched as she grabbed tortilla chips and other bits, most making it out of the case, but some falling into the wide open containers of other condiments. This scene took my appetite down a couple notches. The team put my harvest bowl together quickly but without any passion or interest. After paying, i sat down, took the lid off my bowl, and watched in horror as a majority of topping and dressing stuck to the lid then slid onto the table before I could put the lid back over the bowl. Luckily the napkin I'd just used to clean old food off my chair was placed conveniently under my bowl, so most of my sweet potatoes and dressing were caught by it, rather than the table top. Using the famous 5 second rule, I shook the napkin, catapulting most of my food back into the bowl. Ignoring the napkin's recent history, I enjoyed a rather bland but nicely textured harvest salad. I'm giving a three star rating because, while the ingredients in my salad tasted fresh and were indeed chopped nicely, I just wasn't all that into the taste of the salad itself. Being a Chop't newb, I figured it would be best to go with one of the options from the favorites menu, the Santa Fe. The pepperjack cheese is what turned me off - it was really creamy, like an American cheese, and just didn't taste right for a salad. Also, the chipotle vinaigrette was a lot spicier than I anticipated. Looking over the rest of the menu, there really isn't another salad that jumps out at me as a delicious combination. I think I'd be better off creating my own or hitting up a Sweetgreen (which I love). That said, when beggars can't be choosers it's still nice that there's a salad option at all in Union Station. read more

Some might say $10 is a little pricey for a salad. I can't make one at home for lesser price, especially with all the different ingredients I like. I dont mind $10. I've yet to see a cheaper salad in a restaurant, and as for other small cafes or to-go places, the salads are either not very large or not very good. At chopt, they're both. I've actually seen more people throw some of their salad away because they couldn't finish it, than people who ate the entire thing and said they were still hungry. The combinations here are what really keep my attention. My favorites are the cobb salad, fall classic, steakhouse, and kebab cobb. The ingredients are fresh, and the chopping process really mixes all of them together so you get a bit of everything in each bite. I love the staff here, as well as the sodas they sell. read more

Basically you spend around $11 for a bunch of lettuce that will last you a week if it didn't wilt or have salad dressing on it. They do skimp on the protein and other ingredients as everything is measured in a little cup which I think measures approximately 1/8 of a cup. The good thing is that they have the most selection of toppings you will ever find at any salad shop anywhere and also the array of salad dressings available is mind-boggling. They move fast and have a very efficient assembly line going so even if you go to this Union Station location during the lunch time peak, you will get through the line in like 5 minutes. Bottom-line: I realized that I can make my own salads at home for a lot less and more protein and I actually prefer the Farmhouse salad at Pot Belly next door which is like $3 cheaper. read more

Had Chopt today. Ordered the Chopt Po Boy. Chopper ends up chopping salad, but also chops almost half of the chicken off the chopping board. Needless to say, I kind of wanted all the chicken, not half of it. Chopt needs to come up with a better method so this does not happen, or they need to better train the choppers. The location does get very busy at lunch time, however, if the salads are not done right, by having the choppers rush, they will risk losing return customers. I can assure you I'm in no rush to return. I suggest management encourage the choppers to slow down which will make sure the customer leaves happy with a product they are expecting....everyone can wait an extra few minutes for the salad. read more

Ok, I admit that this is my first time ever at a Chopt, but I'll probably never go back. I made my own salad with kale, rainbow carrots, garbanzo beans, cheddar cheese, and avocado with the basil dressing. The avocado was brown, beans were hard as rocks, kale very stiff (better if they put some oil in it to soften it up), and cheddar in thin rectangular pieces that ended up getting soggy. The small piece of bread I got was stale - basically felt like cardboard in my mouth. All of this, and the prices are still astronomical! Also, they say that 4 of the ingredients are free from this menu, but avocado is on this list and they add an extra $2 if you get that. The staff here really need to get it together. One mention of a build-your-own salad and I'm there. This is what led me to Chop't the first time. Well, that, and the fact that I only had a short window of time for a meal before I had to catch a train. Since we don't have Chop't in Richmond (or Sweet Green - hint, hint to all you salad companies!), I was all about checking this place out when my mom suggested it a few months back. I don't even remember what I ordered on that first visit, but I remember it being delicious, I remember the portion being huge, and I remember having just enough time to share a salad with my mom before hopping on the train. I recently snagged a vegan mexicali salad to-go on my way to catch a train (sense a theme here?), and while it was certainly filling, it didn't hit the spot like that first salad. This one was too spicy, which was my fault because on top of the jalapenos that came in the salad, I also opted for a slightly spicy dressing. On its own, the dressing would've been tame, but paired with the peppers, the bite was a bit too much for my palette. Thankfully, it also came with avocado, which helped temper out the spice! The flavor was great, but the hotness was just a little overpowering for my liking. Lesson learned for next time. I'm sure I will be visiting Chop't again, as I love the concept and the folks who create the salads have always been super friendly. Plus, it's one of the healthier options in Union Station. You pick your mix of greens, toppings, protein, and dressing. Everything is chopped up and mixed together by hand. Very quick and portable as well. Great for eating healthy during the work week. Flavors are also delicious. Staff were decently friendly. My main criticism is that they charge quite a bit for "premium" sides like roasted red peppers, so definitely watch out or your salad could be a bit pricey. read more

I knew my food karma was off when I saw that Chipotle was closed and I had to settle for this place instead. I walked in and didn't know where to order which is embarrassing and disorienting. I ordered one of their signature Asian salads with chicken, mandarin oranges and other toppings. For around $9 the salad was absolutely humongous. I didn't even make a dent in the bucket. The taste wasn't flavorful even though it should have been given all of the toppings and dressing mixed in. Even for the portion size and the price, I wouldn't come back here again. I visit this location 2-3 times a week after work to create my own veggie salad (dry) to take home. I've found that one of their salads is equivalent size-wise to 2 of the bag salads that sell for $3.50 each at my local grocer. Here, I get a fresher, cheaper custom-made product with a better variety of veggies. The choppers are always speedy and professional. Because I always go early evening, there generally isn't a line; but even when there is, I'm in and out quick, fast, and in a hurry. The cashier is friendly and always greets me with a warm smile. They really seem to take pride in offering outstanding customer service. My one complaint would be the lack of consistency. I always get a salad with four veggie toppings. Sometimes the guy making my salad is generous with the toppings, but at other times he's stingy and I end up with what is essentially a huge bowl of romaine lettuce. I'm never quite sure what I'm going to get. Despite this single challenge, I will continue getting my salads here and would encourage other salad lovers to do the same. read more

Uh oh. Looks like trouble in paradise. Used to adore this Chp't location. First, the names and offerings changed. Fine- I'll find new favorites. Then, the menu moved from the wall where I could see it to some minuscule black dots of lettering behind the bar. Unhelpful, but I'll live. And now, the employees- customer communication is going downhill. I have to explain "gluten free" repeatedly, insist on glove changes, watch the content of the salad since what is listed as the ingredients isn't always what goes in the bowl. Today, my salad was made with chicken when I didn't ask for it. I also subbed mesclun for romaine, bc romaine doesn't agree w me. When I pointed out that there was chicken in my salad that I didn't ask for, it was rudely thrown into the rubbish with a big huff! When I got to my table, I found my salad had been prepared with romaine, not mesclun; the beets were old and soggy, the cheese was missing, and the apples were green not red. Not only did my salad taste horrendous and I could only eat half, but it also made me feel ill! The beauty part? I specifically waited until after lunchtime to get my lunch so I wouldn't have to deal with the rushing, the wrong ingredients, possible gluten cross-contamination (the celiacs out there will feel me on that last one). AND it was made by an older fellow in a collared shirt- something smelled managerial about him. Look, I get it: it's minimum wage. It's a salad. But it's a motherhugging $10 salad, and I'd like to not feel terrible while ordering it, while eating it, or after I've eaten it. I can do that with a $3.99 salad. The line at the Union Station Chop't on a Tuesday at 12:30 looks more like the line for the post Katrina foodbank - very long and populated by very desperate looking people. Luckily, the line moves faster than you would think, thanks to the salad-makers ninja like accuracy and speed with which they "create" your salad. Pluses: You're never lacking for options. There are like 25 toppings, 18 dressings and at least 7 different kinds of lettuce. Can you even name 7 different kinds of lettuce? I didn't think so. Minuses: The line is always long, the salads are expensive (never less than $9) and something about the light ("spa") dressings makes me nauseous everytime I eat it. Not a good sign. I have to give one whole star though just for diet rootbeer and black cherry soda. I can't even get that at Wegman's. Brilliant. Staff is also really friendly considering they get pummeled from 11:30 to 2:00 every day. Bottom line, unless you are uber particular about exactly what you ned in your salad, you can get something equally as good at Corner Bakery or Au Bon Pain and in a fraction of the time. read more

We do not have this place where I live. I about died!! Fresh made to order chopped salad. They had so many selections I couldn't pick. So many choices!!! You could pick one they created or create your own. I Asked the guy in front of me what he suggested and went with it! They even had the calories listed for everything. I had so much fun. It was so fast in preparing. I loved watching them chop my salad up and they even asked if it was cut to the perfect size! Why yes it was. Ordered Chop't for an office event, over 24 hours in advance. We requested the food to be delivered by 11.30am, but by 12pm, it still hadn't arrived. We called the store only to be told that the 'driver' was just around the corner and would arrive in minutes. 20 minutes later, still no delivery. Growing frustrated, we called again several times, but were hung up on by managers and other staff members who showed little interest and seemingly didn't care. The 'driver' - who hadn't driven but instead walked the 15-20 minute journey from Chop't to my office' - turned up at 12.45pm, a full hour and 15 minutes later than we requested. When he arrived, he offered no apologies, but instead insisted that his "manager had told him to be late" (???). He made several other excuses before dropping off the bags and handing over our food, walking out without a 'Thank you' or even a 'sorry'. When it arrived, the food was very good. Sadly the delivery completely ruined the experience and we will not be using Chop't again. read more

I love chopt but this location disappoints me every time I go in because the smell of dirty mop water hits you in the face. Sometimes my mouth waters as if I'm about to vomit. I mean to smell dirty mop water while trying to order your food is not pleasant. Also the people in the line are so focused on getting the line down that there not listening to orders. read more

This was my first visiting this restaurant I order the Mediterranean salad. I wasn't sure about the cauliflower rice because I have never tasted before, let me tell you it was delicious the salad was so good and tasty. I hate that I like this place I try to argue with myself while waiting on line to pay "you could have just made this at home" -- but really? Could I really have made this at home? After buying all the darn ingredients (not too early otherwise it will go bad in my fridge!), I've spent at least $30 and let's not even talk about the TIME it takes to clean and chop everything. Assuming one makes $8 an hour, add another $8-12 dollars. that's a whopping $42. So now a $10 dollar salad sounds pretty darn reasonable. Another way that I leave guilt-free is that if I had gotten this same salad in a restaurant, I'd be paying $15 before tax and tip. So again, $10 is reasonable. My fave? The Santa Fe with Tex Mex dressing, skip the crazy cheese. Yum. Big azz salad for my big ol' belly. Who knows how many crazy calories...don't come here thinking you are being "healthy" because you are getting a salad. Wake up! But to their defense, they do have low calorie options, which is great if you're into that... There's a lot of seating in this place despite being in Union Station. I am impressed by the square footage. The employees are a bit dead-pan at times, but they are busy chopping away, so I don't blame them. The line moves REALLY fast. Really fast. Best place to get lunch in Union Station hands down (and its healthy)! I've read other reviews complaining about the high price, but its not necessary for a yummy salad. Get yourself a rewards card. Stick with the Santa Fe, Mexican Caesar or the modern Asian salad and you spend less than $7 and they're delicious. The 10th salad is free, so that's when you treat yourself to the expensive salad. Love the concept, plenty of salad places get my business, but this was my first trip to a chop't and I can say I won't try it again. I think blah sums this place up. It's not great, it's not awful, it's blah. The place itself doesn't have a fresh clean look, but I gave it a shot. It's chipotle style, build your own salad bowl, or order off the favorites menu. I went with the Kebab Cobb. First thing I notice as they are building my bowl is that the ingredients just look sad in their home, just hanging out, been there a while, and the station is not the cleanest. It's like almost 6pm on a Thursday; people are getting in or leaving and are hungry, it should be refilled and fresh and ready to go but it's just not. So my ingredients get mixed and then chipped by the chopping guy with the half circle thing, awesome. I get the idea is chopped, but I like if it's ready to go and you put it in a large bowl and mix everything nicey nice; no that's not it. They chop and mix on the reusable cutting board thing, and the. They dump it in a mixing bowl just to put back in a plastic bowl it came in. The process is just stupid so the guy can chop it with the thing your find in your grandpas garage. I pay, I'm hungry, I sit, I eat. I notice how the salad his looks sad, and so many pieces of lettuce are worn, and have bad spots on them, u know bad lettuce. You don't see it when they're making it but you see it when your ready to eat. It just wasn't fresh, definitely not creative. The chicken is missing, you only get a little, and the red onions are sautéed and tiny; I mean why would you put that in a salad? I mostly get the flavor of the red peppers. There aren't a lot of great options at Union Station, thought that seems to be changing with the Chipotle next to Chop't and a roti place as well as a few others. Either way, this is one of the weaker chop't locations I've been to. They are skimpy on the toppings. It wasn't busy on my visit, but the way the line is set up, it's not really ideal for a station where many people will have luggage with them. I really enjoy Chopt salads and I have been anticipating its new location at Union Station. The first day was pretty busy, but there was a man that kept pushing people around. I dont know if he was the owner but he was very rude. He sorta grabbed me and set me in line because I wasn't sure who to go to since it was crowded around the bar area. Anyhow, It was their first day in business so I will let it slide, but I have never wanted to tell someone to chill out so badly. My co workers felt the same way so its not like I was the only one. I felt rushed to place my order, I ended up ordering something I didnt want to get and I was misunderstood when I said I did not want chicken in my salad.
