However I always see so many people going there and the food smells so good, therefore this day I decided to park and stop by. The customer service is standard. Taste of China is some of the best Chinese takeout I've had in Baltimore! Located a short walk from Hopkins Med Campus, they have generous portion sizes and great prices. You can get the typical American Chinese such as General Tso's, Sesame Chicken, etc. My favorite dish though is the Yum nan spicy chicken. It's wok fried chicken with chiles and a spicy garlic sauce served with white rice. Super spicy but so flavorful and a great change from the super salty/sweet sauces that go on the typical dish. Their fried rice is also pretty good if that's your thing. All in all, a super good spot for american chinese food with a few more authentic choices that are really the hidden gems on the menu. For good, American style takeout Chinese food in the vicinity of Hopkins, Taste of China is your winner. Their lunch combos are around $7 for a generous portion of your main dish and either onion fried rice or white rice. They have an eggplant dish that's really popular with my friends, and all of the other dishes I have tried (your standard general Tso's, sweet and sour chicken, lo mein) are really good. Reviled (yet strangely beloved) by Chinese Hopkins students, Taste of China is the only passable option for Chinese food close to the Johns Hopkins Hospital/East Baltimore campus. Most of their offerings are pretty terrible, but there are a few things they do surprisingly well. Some highlights: Chinese menu (on the whiteboard by the register): -Sichuanese Water-Cooked Fish: Tilapia slices suspended in a spicy chili oil broth with Napa cabbage and bean sprouts. Very spicy, unless you're used to that sort of thing. -Beef brisket noodle soup Comes with slices of beef with crunchy connective tissue. English menu: -Ginger fish Fried battered tilapia in a clear ginger and scallion sauce, served on top of rice and stir-fried vegetables. -Mapo tofu IMPORTANT: ask them to make it spicy, add green onions, and for no peas. This is my current favorite dish here. With the two above requests, you should get something close-ish to what mapo tofu is supposed to taste like. The sauce should not be syrupy or sweet or sour at all. It is unfortunately inconsistent though -- sometimes it tastes pretty good, other times it's still terrible. Vegetarians and vegans should note that mapo tofu is NOT vegetarian--mapo tofu should be always be prepared with ground beef, or at the very least, ground pork. If you're still dead set on eating it, I guess you could ask them to take out the meat, but it's probably not going to taste as good. -Pork chop A fried pork chop (marinated in cooking wine and soy sauce?) atop rice. Comes with stir-fried onions. -House Special spare ribs These are actually "hongshao"/red cooked style. Slow-cooked so the cartilage is soft and edible. You could probably get a week's worth of calcium by eating it. Ask for steamed vegetables on the side (e.g. bok choy/bai cai). -Beef wide rice noodles (chow mei fun?) -Beef with tomato and egg -Singapore noodles Open late, portions are big, service is fast, and it's hard to complain when you have a late night at school and the food costs less than $7, including tax. read more

I had taste for egg foo young. So I decided to try Taste of China. When I started working at Hopkins about 16 years ago I use to frequently come here for lunch. They must have changed owners because I remember the food being a little better. I got the shrimp egg foo young lunch special. You get two patties and plenty of rice. But there was only like three very small shrimp in each patty. So the patties where full of onions and egg. Mostly onions. The taste was just ok. I swore I would stop eating Chinese food. This time I mean it. Just your typical Chinese carryout. No thanks. As I was sitting there they mixed up two customers orders. One customer had already opened the meal and put his fork in it. So they tried to give the other customer (young lady) the meal that had already been opened . But she refused. I watched them take the same meal and act as if they made her a new one and gave her that same meal. I won't be back. read more

Yeesh. I must say that it is SLIM PICKINS' eating around Johns Hopkins Hospital. No wonder I usually bring my own lunch. We had sesame chicken and the shrimp chow mein. Sesame chicken was basically very sweet chicken smothered in sauce with rice and a single piece of broccoli. The shrimp chow mein was oily with no veggies and basically noodles and a few pieces of shrimp (and all that oil). For 5 bucks each maybe the hospital cafeteria Subway might've been a better choice. Top it off with 1.50 for a biggg can of green tea because this stuff will leave you thirsty. The one benefit is that it was FAST and it does get you out of the air of the hospital for a nice walk in the sun outside. Buttttttttt I would keep on walking towards the Market a block down for something else to eat. read more

As one of the few places to eat around the Hospital, this was one of the only things open after 5pm. The first thing I noticed was the small portions. It's not an expensive meal, but they skimp on servings all around and meat on my boyfriend's dish (I'm vegetarian). I'd rate this as a very tiny half step above Panda Express, but more hole-in-the-wall. It has the same MSG/greasy but not in a good way/bland lazy "Chinese" food. I wouldn't go again unless I was really desperate. One plus: proximity to the medical campus and it's open later than most other things in that area. read more

I came to this place for the first time about five years ago. I had smoothie/milkshake here with banana, strawberry and mango flavors. Not sure if they still carry them. Over the years, I have tried their food options. This is a nice quiet place for lunch/dinner. The food is reasonable in price and quality. Service was professional and food was ready quickly. Recently I had tofu and vegetables with friend rice. I would definitely return to satisfy my Chinese food cravings. read more

Not gourmet by any stretch, but Taste of China delivers fast, cheap, plentiful, and tasty food at lunchtime. Overall this is my favorite lunch option in the Hopkins Hospital/JHMI area. I usually go with sesame tofu (sweet brown sauce w sesame seeds) or kung pao tofu (stir-fried with peanuts and vegetables). Their vegetable panang is also good, and my wife likes their basil chicken and sha cha chicken. I can place a call as I leave my desk two blocks away, and the food will usually be ready by the time I arrive. They're also a good, cheap option for catering. We sometimes order lunch for our lab group (around 20 people) for under $150. WARNING: do not confuse these folks with the other Taste of China near the Inner Harbor. Great spot for lunch. Can't beat the lunch special-- full meal for less than $6. The food is definitely good, too--- it doesn't have a chemically taste that I have found in some other Chinese joints. just a quick update... if you are thinking "noodles" and want to order "chow mein" off their menu, you are sadly deluding yourself. for some strange reason, chow mein is served on rice, not noodles. if you want noodles, stick with the lo mein (tasty but a bit salty) or the singapore noodles (quite good)! read more
