Stopped in Depoe Bay wanting lunch and were just walking along looking for a place. They had their menu in the window and had us at crab melt sandwich. So we came inside to eat. Pretty casual with some cute nautical decorations around. The guy working was friendly, so no complaints about service. Usually we get two menu items and split them, but I had a feeling I would want my own entire sandwich and I wasn't wrong. There was plenty of crab and melted cheese in the sandwich. They had lemon, pickles, and lettuce in the side so I figured they did that for a reason. Went ahead and added that to my sandwich and man was it delicious. I was actually surprised how much more delicious it made it. So I would recommend trying it. Even though it's grilled you can still do it easy enough. Stopped in to see if their chowder was any good. It was! In an area where most people think Mo's is really good chowder, you'll find the Chowder Bowl to be waaaaaay better than that! I'm from Boston so my standards for really good chowder are pretty high. The chowder here is decent. A step above decent. For the price they charge ($5.50/bowl) they could add more clams. The chowder itself is tasty although they could improve it by making it creamier. Minus one star because of the high price compared to what you get. Only one waitress there and she was running her tail off yet remained cheerful which impressed us. If it wasn't for her this would be only a three star review. The Sea Hag next door also has good chowder so to me it would be a toss-up as to which one was better. My 3 stars is ranking a bowl of chowder only. It's average. If you want better chowder, browse every tourist restaurant on the Oregon Coast...and before entering, a sign on the door will proclaim they are the winner of the Annual National Chowder Cook-Off for the past 20 years...or something like that. Or you can cross the street from the Chowder Bowl, be careful not to get dowsed by a spouting horn, walk 1/2 mile north along hwy 101 and go to Tidal Raves...assuming they are open and not filming another total flop 1-star movie like The Burning Plain, when they were closed for 3 months. The chowder there is much better. But the thing is, chowder at Tidal Raves will cost 3x as much. You pay for what you get. So average chowder means average chowder. Not great, not bad. And believe it or not, the Chowder Bowl doesn't have any sign proclaiming the annual champion of any chowder cook-offs, so I appreciate their honesty. The service was good, and someone who resembles and acts like Flo from Progressive Insurance...except maybe 20 years older and somewhat heavier was our waitress. In this Covid era, she was even able to provide salt and pepper without any sailor cussing under her breath. Water glasses were re-filled. Finally, Chowder Bowl in Depoe Bay has nothing to do with the Chowder Bowl in Newport Nye Beach. I was rebuked for assuming they were related. I think they hate each other since one of them copied the other. Personally, I rank the Depoe Bay Chowder Bowl better than Nye Beach. read more

Terrible service, guy at the bar/train conductor looks like a pedo. The waitress has an iq of a 10 year old so it was only right to leave a $10 tip. Should have been less. Went to the bathroom after paying, she thought I left & proceeds to tell the table next to us how we are "shi**y tippers". Looked like she saw a ghost when she realized how dumb she looked after being confronted. One would think that you would find a superb clam chowder when on the Oregon coast and dining at a place called the Chowder Bowl. You'd think? Right? Well, not this time. The chowder was hot but that's maybe the best thing I can say. This was much thinner than what I think of as chowder. Now, I don't require a super thick, pudding-like, gelatinous bowl but I do want a creamy, thick and clam-rich bowl of deliciousness. Disappointing for sure. There wasn't much flavor other than milk and salt, just mainly salt. It wasn't horrible but we didn't take more than a couple bites each to make an assessment and that was enough. This could improve greatly with a few more vegetables, herbs, white wine, tender clams and perhaps a quick squeeze of lemon. We can hope that this review will be read by the Chowder Bowl and they just might make a few changes to improve their namesake. One can always hope. read more

This place is extremely overpriced and the waitress that helped us was extremely polite and young but did her best, the food was basic, nothing to write home about. My wife had the burger basket and it was definitely not a $15.95 burger and the shrimp cocktail was extremely disappointing, it's a bunch of small tiny salad shrimp that you get at grocery store and they are in a pool of cocktail sauce. I had the Sea Wich sandwich which was basically deep fried cod with tarter sauce on an oversized bun, it was mostly bread and took away from the fish. Our boys had a burger and corn dog, service was slow and we never got asked if we needed refills or how the food was until we got our bill. Like I said our waitress did her best, you can tell she was inexperienced. Prices were a little high, but the food was amazing and the service was great! This was the first time in a while that we ate everything we ordered! I split a hamburger and fries with a cup of clam chowder with my aunt, while my cousin had an amazing crab melt! I think my favorite was the clam chowder though, it was just the perfect amount of creamy and not too salty! I walked into the Chowder Bowl with my darling Husband for a late lunch. I ordered the oyster sandwich. I didn't eat all the bread. It was deeelicious. The oysters are pan-fried... and the breading or coating is exceptional. I am impressed. I was asked by the male server what did I want to drink. I was told that there isn't any pineapple juice. I ordered orange juice. My glass mug of orange juice had a handle on it. I was impressed. I asked for no ice. I was told that my husband liked his bowl of clam chowder. It comes in a sourdough bread bowl... which is edible (you can eat it... so go ahead). There was a television with the World of Warcraft movie on. My husband ordered a diet Pepsi. I asked for the cocktail sauce to be "on the side" of my oyster sandwich. And, yes... the server checked in on us while my husband and I were eating. There were a few people who were also dining inside the Chowder Bowl when I was there. Those people also got to go boxes. There is Malt Vinegar on the table at the Chowder Bowl. This place is borderline criminally overpriced. We just got one beer each, and a small cup of chowder with salad and spent almost $30. I'd be hard pressed to believe the chowder didn't come out of a can, and the service was almost non existent. Meh. This place isn't just a meh experience because the décor is old, run down, and feels like a holdover from 1981.. or earlier. It's a meh experience because the staff is also meh, and the food. Our server was plainly more interested in when he got off than in helping us. It was apparent that we were an irritation to him which he made clear by eye rolling and sighing each time we needed something and he had to stop chatting with his fellow employee about what he was doing after work. I got the chowder, which I thought was pretty awful. The kids got fish and chips which were over priced (not a complaint I make very often) and subpar. The fries were stale and the fish was miniscule. There were 6 of us and no one was happy with their meal. So often in tourist towns lazy restaurateurs throw quality and service out the window because they know that their clientele is here today, gone tomorrow. But now with Yelp, at least visitors can be warned. We've continued to stop here two or three times a year but were very disappointed this week that they decided to gouge tourists in town for the eclipse. They published a "special" eclipse menu which also jacked their prices up anticipating that the crowds coming to the Coast for the eclipse would have no place else to go and wouldn't mind paying $18 for a clam strip basket. Maybe they made some quick bucks, but they turned my family off. And we're the kind of regular in-state visitors I'd think they would not want to lose.
