Unexpectedly great place. See photos. Mid-week, around 2 pm, non-tourist time, few people in the restaurant. Great service, and they kept the refills of the coffee coming. How many places on the coast serve clam chowder? How many restaurants deliver? This gem does. Clam chowder was rich, thick, and had lots of clams. Not an overabundance of potatoes either, perfect balance. So good. For my taste, I don't like it to be too fishy tasting. The chowder bowl hit my taste preference, better than other well-known seafood establishments on the coast. See photos of the menu. I got the bread bowl option, and yes, I ate the whole thing, bread and all. I was so full. The coffee was good, and they had 3 options for the sugar selection: reg, pink, and yellow. The creamer was non-flavored. The prices seemed to be moderate, and proportions were reasonable. The side of fries were more abundant than in some places we visited. So, yes, this is well worth the visit to a local seafood place for the clam chowder, fries, and coffee. The establishment has a small-town beachside charm. Slumgolian Chowder Cannonball. When I saw this on the menu here, I had to just go for it. When I saw the term 'Slumgolian', I first thought of some sort of villain from Tolkein's Middle-Earth. Like maybe an Uruk-hai with a serpent head would be a Slumgolian warrior. But - that's not it. Slumgolian, as it turns out, is a spelling variant of the more widely known 'slumgullion', which I would argue is not well known at all, either. A slumgullion is apparently an Americanized version of the Hungarian Goulash. Yet - it's not really that, either. In the context of the Chowder Bowl, the Slumgolian is their classic chowder topped with some Oregon pink shrimp, which I have to say is just a great add to the mix, and nothing like a goulash (or an Uruk-hai, if that wasn't clear). And, the "Cannonball", if that wasn't obvious, is the round, breadbowl container for the chowder, fresh from the Yaquina Baking Company, and what I think is the best part of this overall dish. A restaurant's namesake dish had better be good, and if you're coming here for the Chowder, it's the Slumgolian Chowder Cannonball variant that I would recommend. The bread was a definite 10/10, with perfect texture and absorption level of the chowder. The shrimp addition was a great way to add some oomph to an otherwise very good (but not lifechangingly good) chowder. I personally prefer my chowders a little thicker, though the clam amounts were solid, and didn't have any sandiness to them (my big pet peeve in chowders). Service was, well...serviceable. I think it was a slow day, as the crew started cleaning the floors and putting up furniture about 30m before they were closed. They seemed to be doing a brisk takeout business (all chowder orders, from what I could hear), probably catering to locals, as we did visit in what seems to be offseason. The menu also has a variety of seafood basket options (fish & chips, shrimp & chips, clam strips & chips, oysters & chips, you get the drift). In summary, you'll be good if you're looking here for chowder, and if you do that, go Slumgolian. read more

I was eating alone and had to wait about 15 minutes to be seated. It was pretty busy, but it was Saturday. My waitress was so friendly and food was out quickly. I got the chowder cannonball (bread bowl), side of coleslaw, and some rose wine. I also had the bread pudding to go. The chowder does not skimp on clams and is so savory! The slaw is pretty average. The bread was flakey and fresh. The bread pudding is something I would highly recommend. I'd go there again just for that. read more

I am going to try to be generous here. However regardless of the good reviews I would never go here again. We were excited to try but were massively disappointed. My wife and I had the coconut shrimp, clam Chowder, & fish & chips. The shrimp looked and tasted like what you would buy in the freezer section at the grocery store. The chowder had no flavor tasted like potato glue. Thankfully no sand. The fish did not taste fresh. The coating was just weird, not crispy. The fish was rubbery and didnt taste any better than mortons from the grocery store. We cant even give the chips a good review. They were unique, kind of a cross between a fry and a chip. But they were not crisp and had no flavor. I am sorry, I dont understand the good reviews. It was so bad we didn't even finish it. Which was hard to do because it was pretty expensive. Im not trying to be cruel and we always try to support small local business. But this food did not deserve my money. I'm not a local but there has to be a better local option. I love the food here, and my husband and I agree that this was some of the BEST chowders we've had on our trip. My husband also really enjoyed Sea-which. The salads are fresh as well. The only issue you may experience is finding parking, but it's well worth it. There might be a little while, especially if you are in a big group, but once again, it's worth it. We sat outside each time and had a relaxing experience. The servers were all very kind and attentive, and the place was clean. If you have dogs, they can accompany their owners on the back deck, and they even get a bowl of water served. The prices were very reasonable. I will be back next time I visit! Enjoy read more

TL;DR: Just came across Chowder Bowl while walking around the area for a quick bite. Nothing special, but fine for just a simple meal after the coast. Seemed clean and not too busy for 7PM on a Wed. Semi-suitable for wheelchair users (bathroom requires going down a few steps). Arrived and immediately sat our party of two at 7PM on a Wed. We can just for a quick bite before a long drive home. Short ramp from the entrance to dining area. I believe the bathrooms are down a few steps, unless they have another bathroom that is wheelchair accessible. French doors lead to the covered patio covered which was being decommissioned for the evening - it was a chilly night. The garnishes got mixed in before I got a pic, sorry! Chowder Sourdough Bowl was bland. Couple good bites of clams in the soup though. The sourdough bread was okay. It's not as sour like typical sourdoughs. Came with oyster crackers. The top of the bread bowl was toasted and garlicky - really tasty. Dipping it into the soup helped add more flavor to the soup! I found I'm rarely disappointed when I see coconut shrimp on a menu. The coconut shrimp was decent. Nice coconut flavor and came out hot! It came with a citrusy dipping sauce that well with it. It wasn't a chili sauce like I've seen so often paired with coconut shrimp. The side of fries it came with were bland - needed salt and pepper. From the not to be missed standby white chowder ( bread bowl or slumgullian style topped with bay shrimp) to the chipotle shrimp tacos with mango salsa, the food is always a good value and try the specials like today's sockeye dill salmon. We stopped here today on our way down the coast. What a fantastic find! We were seated right away by a friendly greeter, at one of two open inside tables. It's was full, but not too loud or overcrowded. Maria provided attentive but not smothering service. We enjoyed four different meals: Grilled Salmon Cobb Salad, Fish and Chips, the Sourdough Bread bowl of chowder, and a Banquet Burger. My husband tasted my chowder and was reminded what CA chowder is missing....the Northwest chowder taste! We don't know what's different, but it is, and we really, really enjoyed it. I especially appreciated the dollop of real butter on the soup! Most places aren't as thoughtful about having real butter, which is important to me. My husband's fish and chips were piping hot, perfectly cooked and not oily or overbattered. EXCELLENT! Our son inhaled the burger and even said that it was better than he thought it would be. Our daughter really enjoyed her salad and appreciated how much salmon was on it. They aren't skimpy here! We all had water and it tasted fresh and clean, which is becoming more rare. We dropped by here after a beach walk. It was super crowded with the lunch rush. The service was quick and efficient. The food came up quickly probably less than 15 minutes. Chowder bowl is a very relaxed, family friendly environment. The staff is extremely cordial with enthusiastic personalities. Even during this, Spring Break, service is surprisingly prompt and no time is wasted in preparing your order. I found the clam chowder very creamy with plenty of potato and clams. The flavor was a bit neutral. The calamari appetizer was an outstanding huge portion of large and small calamari, steaming hot and came with two dipping sauces. One was a sweet ginger and the other was a nicely seasoned tartar. The Patty Melt came with two burger patties and sliced tomato with pickle. The tomato was an excellent addition as it most definitely added to the flavor profile. The Chowder Canon Ball was a pretty large sourdough bread boule that was filled with chowder, the cap came toasted. Chicken strips and fries had a strong pepper flavor with a nice crisp. The fries are not traditional, they are actually potato rounds like poker chips. I'll assume they are made on-site from fresh potatoes. Perfect amount of crisp and I loved it. On its own it could use a pinch more salt, but with sauces; delicious! 2. Chowder Bowl: for a place that is called Chowder Bowl; I had to see if it lived up to its name. I loved the flavor, however a knockdown because it was a LOT of potato. I don't know if I just got a bad scoop, but literally only three small pieces of seafood and all potato. 3. Fish n Chips: Standard. Nothing special, but still delicious. I liked being able to choose between 2 or 3 pieces. Decent price. It also came with a piece of Garlic Toast which was the best dipper for the Chowder. 4.
