    Slumgolian Chowder
    Kristina C.

Pretty cute spot, wish we could've seen the outdoor patio but maybe next time. The fish and chips were awesome, I literally devoured it so fast! It wasn't beer batter so I felt a bit skeptical but it was so delicious and light! My husband's clam chowder was pretty good! We enjoyed it but we've had better chowder, and better bread bowls for sure. Should've skipped the marionberry cobbler, wasn't anything special and was pretty mushy. Service was...fine? It was a busy Sunday night so I understand but she wasn't personable at all, and didn't check in on us for anything else... we'd still come back!

When we visit Newport, we always try and stop here. It's a classic Newport experience. Usually we both order the clam chowder. But today, their special was a smoked salmon Cobb salad. I love Cobb salad as well as smoked salmon so the combination sounded excellent. When we got our food, the chowder was piping hot and as you can see from the picture, the Cobb was huge. The chowder is still very good and the salad was wonderful. Our server was cheerful and attentive, and we recommend stopping here whenever you are in Newport.

Tried the chowder in a bread bowl, with bay shrimp. SO GOOD! I've had the same style chowder elsewhere (slumgullion) and this is some of the best! The sourdough bread bowl was also sturdy enough to hold up to the chowder, but soft enough to be able to enjoy easily. We went on a Tuesday during the summer at lunchtime. We didn't have to wait long for a table at all, but it seemed every table was filled and they were quite busy. Service was slower than I've had at other restaurants, but that wasn't a deal breaker for us, as it's to be expected, especially in the summertime. Despite being a packed house, it didn't feel like you were dining right on other guests, as the tables have a comfortable space between them. Decor is very beachy and provides lovely artwork to enjoy while you dine.

Great chowder and Steamer clams. On the fish n chips menu, cod is your option. No halibut although, there are other options with chips; clams and oysters. It was very good. Great server and a great atmosphere. They were very busy inside but the outside patio wasn't too bad. Wear a coat because there are no heaters out there if you get cold easily.

I had a great experience today! I was seated right away. I ordered Clam Chowder, Calamari, and Fish and Chips. I got the smaller portion of the Clam Chowder but it was the perfect amount because it was a lot of food! It came out right away after placing the order, came out hot. It was really good! Next, we got the calamari which was pretty good too. I would probably try another appetizer next time but I would recommend the calamari if you've never tried it. Lastly, we got the fan favorite, Fish and Chips. They came out super fresh. I liked the tartar sauce that was served with it and paired really well with the fish. Great experience. Fast service. Definitely recommend!

It was pretty good, your typical fried fish and chip type place. On the expensive side, but it seemed to be the only thing open in this area when we were there! Very long wait to get seated and it was freezing outside...I ordered their biggest seafood platter with a little bit of everything in it. It was quite delicious and I'm pretty sure I ate all of it and walked away stuffed as a tick! I'd come back and try more things next time I'm in the area.

We were in town for the weekend and it was later than the usual dinner time hour. This place served our needs. We had 4 hungry appetites from a long drive on the road. The wind sure was blowing when we got to town so we were a bit chilled to the bone, to say the least. We walked in and were greeted by some friendly staff. We were seated immediately and provided menus. We placed our orders and food was delivered in a timely manner. There were other customers, it certainly wasn't dead on a Saturday night, one day after Christmas. Good sign. We tried the clam chowder. Wished I would have gotten a bowl of it. One of the best clam chowder soups that I've had in awhile. So flavorful and chunky! Will order a bowl next time! Chicken stips were hot, serving size was reasonable. They were decent. Nothing special just your typical chicken strips. The fries were crispy delicious! Fish tacos were good and tasty. Hamburger for the granddaughter with just ketchup. She ate most of it so it must have been good. She is not a food. I'm not sure how that's possible...I love to eat and try new stuff! Would I return to the Chowder House? Yes, but, I would try something else on the menu.

This place is phenomenal what a treasure. I wish I knew about it sooner. The food and service are both good. The taste is outstanding and good portion size. The restaurant is nice and clean. The patio is dog friendly which is a nice touch. I would highly recommend this place. It is one of the best clam chowders I have tasted.

Super clean restaurant. Staff was pleasant and attentive. We had a cup of chowder, fish and chips, fried clams and steamer clams. The fried clams were fresh and not chewy at all. The chowder was rich and very tasty. Highly recommend!!!

    Salad with bay shrimp

I told my husband I wanted a simple, fresh bay shrimp salad and this is the place he chose for me. I feel like this is where the locals go (regularly!) and the lucky tourist. Very reasonable prices, variety of options and filling portions. Super casual and comfy atmosphere with two areas of indoor seating and a protected, dog friendly outdoor patio area. There is limited street parking, but a public lot just down the street towards the beach. Super friendly and sincere staff.

Service is adequate. Our server wasn't super friendly and seemed very impatient when we were deciding what to order. Food is okay. Lots of hits and misses. Calamari and chips were the best thing. Super fresh & perfectly cooked calamari. Chips were a cool shape that added to the mouth feel/texture. Shrimp tacos were also pretty good. Chowder was okay. I prefer Mo's over this chowder. It was overly creamy & lacked texture. Fish and chips were meh. No variety in the type of fish and the breading was subpar. Had nice dog friendly patio seating with a sheet overtop to block the direct sun. Seating inside looked nice as well. There's a public parking lot down the road where the restaurant is. Overall, it was a decent place to get dinner but I wouldn't go back.

This has always been my go-to spot for chowder whenever I'm in the area -- and it's easy to see why. Their clam chowder is outstanding: rich, creamy, and packed with generous, tender clams instead of just potatoes. I also have to RAVE about their golden fries. They recently changed the cut, and it's brilliant -- a perfect hybrid between thick, hearty fries and the delicate bite of a potato chip. They're crisp, well-seasoned, and genuinely addicting. The service here is another standout. Our waiter was attentive & friendly, making sure we had everything we needed without ever being intrusive. The ambiance is always pleasant -- clean, welcoming, and just the right kind of relaxed for a casual meal or a quick bite. I can't recommend this place highly enough -- it's worth a stop just for that phenomenal clam chowder!

    Chowder Bowl, Nye Beach
    James M.

The Newport Chowder Bowl at Nye Beach AGAIN wins our votes for the BEST Clam Chowder on the Oregon Coast! Our go-to order is two bowls of their wonderful thick and creamy clam chowder ($8.50 each), and shared an order of Garlic Onion Cheese Bread ($8.00). I also ordered two-pieces of fried Cod on the side, and the fish and the Tartar Sauce are Excellent. (The Fish and Chips always look so good, but we're here for the Chowder). Lunch was Beyond Delicious! We always wait until mid-afternoon to go, usually a weekday, just to miss the lineup at 11am, when they open, and the lunch crush. The restaurant is neat and organized, comfortably cozy, very family friendly, the restrooms clean, and ... really hasn't changed since the awful fire, and thankfully reopening in 2004. Plenty of street and/or parking lot parking, except on weekends and holidays and during summer :) Service was friendly, courteous, quick and accurate (Thank You, Sara, Great Job!), which is hard to do in a restaurant as busy as the Newport Chowder Bowl. A Coastal Classic! Highly recommended, Five-Well-Deserved-Stars.

First, it was noticed that you are no longer able to make reservations unless it is a party of 7 or more. That was unusual and thought the cause sure to peak summer travel. Secondly, there was no bread service, initially mistaken as an oversight then realized it was no longer offered. Third, the appetizer always ordered the seafood fondue was cool. In the past, it was piping hot served in a chafing style manner. While the chafing was there, in no way was that to get it to a piping hot temperature as served previously. Lastly, the dessert, again a staple when at Georgie's the Marionberry cobbler changed from previous offerings. Overall, Georgie's has a special place, however, the changes concern the level of quality menu items. I hope this feedback helps as Georgie's has been a gem for years and one of a kind on the coast. it would be very disappointing to see a downward level of food quality and service. The views are amazing; however, it did not pair with quality food and great service it would be no different than any other locale with ocean views.

Besides the view the food is exceptionally fresh and delicious, I ordered the New Seafood platter so I could try a lot of different items on the menu. The chilled Dungeness crab was very good and tasty. No need to add anything! The fresh shucked oysters were tasty and fresh and clean. The crab dip was exceptionally good with chucks of crab meat to eat with the fried won ton chips & crackers. The ceviche was okay and also the spicy shrimp salad. The clam chowder was very good and flavorful and it was okay on the thicker side, came out nice and hot not warm. We were here for our grand-daughter's wedding and were watching her dog. We called to make sure that they could accommodate a party of 4 with a dog, and we were told "Yes." We arrived for an early dinner around 4:00 PM. The restaurant was practically empty. When I said that we were a party of 4 with a dog and that I had called and was told it would be okay, I got a look of surprise form the hostess and she walked away. After a few minutes, she came back and told us to walk around the outside of the restaurant and come to the side, which we did. This was a semi-enclosed area. She at first wanted to seat us close to the trash bins that smelled like fish garbage, so we asked to be moved up closer to the front windows, which they did. She placed 4 menus on the table with 4 napkins, 4 knives, and 2 forks. We had to ask for 2 more forks and they brought 4 - duh! The server came over and brought 3 waters with ice and one with no ice - go figure! She asked if we were ready to order. We said "No," as we had just sat down. She took our drink orders which she managed to get wrong. We only ordered two drinks. A beer for my son-in- law and a Canadian Club Whiskey on the rocks - single serving, for my husband. She brought him the drink straight up - he had to ask for the ice to put in his drink. We then placed our dinner orders. They were out of oysters so that we could not order any of the dishes on the menu with oysters. We started with two cups and a bowl of Gino's Homemade Clam Chowder. We all enjoyed the soup very much. My husband and I decided to share the Pan Seared Rockfish and told the server that we would be sharing and requested another plate. The menu described it as pan seared rockfish topped with fresh fennel and honey mustard vinaigrette served with spinach creamy risotto and sauteed seasonal vegetables. They forgot to bring the extra plate, so we had to ask for it again. The other entrees were the Rockfish Fish 'n Chips and the Crew Share which was two pieces of halibut, two prawns, two scallops, and two small oysters with chips and Cole slaw. We had to ask for more water, which never came. They paid no attention to details. The food was enjoyable. The service was terrible. All in all, it was pricey in our book and just okay! There are far too many restaurants in Newport to choose from - go elsewhere!
