The fries were different but very good. The salmon sandwich was excellent, beautiful piece of sockeye salmon on a ciabatta bun. Chowder bowl is a very relaxed, family friendly environment. The staff is extremely cordial with enthusiastic personalities. Even during this, Spring Break, service is surprisingly prompt and no time is wasted in preparing your order. I found the clam chowder very creamy with plenty of potato and clams. The flavor was a bit neutral. The calamari appetizer was an outstanding huge portion of large and small calamari, steaming hot and came with two dipping sauces. One was a sweet ginger and the other was a nicely seasoned tartar. The Patty Melt came with two burger patties and sliced tomato with pickle. The tomato was an excellent addition as it most definitely added to the flavor profile. The Chowder Canon Ball was a pretty large sourdough bread boule that was filled with chowder, the cap came toasted. Chicken strips and fries had a strong pepper flavor with a nice crisp. The fries are not traditional, they are actually potato rounds like poker chips. I'll assume they are made on-site from fresh potatoes. Just a tip for anyone looking to go to Newport Beach, there is a great parking lot right next to Chowder Bowl! The ease and location of this place was and will be one of the reasons I would come back! My girls and I ordered the following: 1. Calamari: chewy and delicious. Perfect amount of crisp and I loved it. On its own it could use a pinch more salt, but with sauces; delicious! 2. Chowder Bowl: for a place that is called Chowder Bowl; I had to see if it lived up to its name. I loved the flavor, however a knockdown because it was a LOT of potato. I don't know if I just got a bad scoop, but literally only three small pieces of seafood and all potato. 3. Fish n Chips: Standard. Nothing special, but still delicious. I liked being able to choose between 2 or 3 pieces. Decent price. It also came with a piece of Garlic Toast which was the best dipper for the Chowder. 4. I had walked past here a few times before it opened and it always smelled delicious. I could smell the chowder as I passed and would make a mental note that I would need to go back and eat there. The restaurant also received good reviews on Yelp, so that convinced me. I ordered takeout, which turned out to be a good decision since there were people waiting to be seated. I ordered the shrimp and chips as well as the chowder. The shrimp was fried well and was well-seasoned, but the chips were soggy. I'm not sure if it's because they were in a to go container, but they just seemed like they should be crispier. The chowder was delicious--super creamy with the right amount of filling. It's been a really long time since I was here with family and my memories of the clam chowder had me coming back. Well, either they had a bad day, or my memories are faulty. It just wasn't as good as I remembered. Definitely creamy and looking like it should. Flavor was actually bland which was a big disappointment. It does come with a pat of butter on top. I also went with the fish taco's this time. Ordered with the flour tortilla and mango salsa. The tortillas are a bit big for the quantity of filling. Maybe the corn tortillas would be better. Salsa was great compliment to the dish. The fish itself was very nice, but I think it was just their normal fish and chips style. It was an overall decent meal, just not exceptional. We decided to get the chowder bread bowl, and outside of feeling wasteful not eating the whole bowl, it was a great choice! I've had this dish before served in a bread bowl, but these guys serve it in a huge, fresh and delish bread bowl and butter and grill the "lid" to give it more "umph". Genius idea! The chowder itself had lots of flavor, wasn't overly salty and wasn't overly rich, which I love. This is a charming little spot not far from the beach. Despite the restaurant being crowded, our appetizer, meals, and dessert got to us in a timely fashion. The servers were friendly and attentive. The deep fried green beans were great - definitely my favorite part of the meal. My Cannon Ball Chowder (chowder in a bread bowl) could have been more flavorful. A little too potato-heavy for me, but still good. The bread was covered in garlic powder, which gave the bread an "off" taste since it was dusted onto the bread without adding salt, oil, or anything else. Could've been done better. Dessert (bread pudding) was great! I'd come here again for the fried green beans, in particular! I focused a lot of this review on the chowder because the restaurant is called the "Chowder Bowl" after all, and I'd imagine many people are interested in trying it out. Very good. Food was fresh and seasoned well. The oysters were ginormous! My husband ordered the option of three extra oysters and couldn't finish! Fish taco was nice white cod fish, delicious. Oh, we each had a cup of clam chowder that was loaded with clams! Outstanding! Service was good took them a little time to get to us but once they did they were very attentive. Perfect, gave us time to go walk down to the beach and back. The service is friendly and efficient. The food was great, the best clam chowder we've had in a long time. My husband said the fish & chips were on par with the best. I kept stealing his food because it was so good. My clam chowder was really fantastic, and I am finicky about my chowder! Stopped for lunch on Sunday January 12, 2025. It was busy, yet our server, Mckenzie seated us right away. We started with a fragrant organic locally roasted coffee. The Clam Chowder was EXCELLENT with a little bit of butter on top that gave it an added little salt and creaminess. For appetizers we got the garlic bread and calamari. The bread was nice and soft and was very good, and the calamari was yummy with the tartar sauce. I had the Nye club sandwich, it is big with chips that were amazing. I love the cut of the chips. We had a party of 5 and no one needed a single thing and said their dishes were perfect. Everything was fresh and made to order. The serving size is such a good portion, that 3 of us had boxes to go.
